By Order of the City Council /s/ Todd Gerhardt, City Manager (Published in the Chanhassen Villager on Thursday, March 3, 10 and 17, 2011; No. 4483) PUBLIC SAFETY Cologne woman dies during deadly week According to preliminary Minnesota Department of Pub- lic Safety (DPS) traffic crash re- ports, nine people died during a seven-day period (Feb. 17–23), making it the deadliest period on Minnesota roads in 2011. Ashley Meuwissen, 2 3 , of Cologne, died after her vehicle was broadsided at about 9 : 30 a.m. Feb. 17 while attempting to cross Highway 212 at Highway 2 8 4 in Cologne, according to the DPS. DPS officials say the traffic death rate accelerated in Feb- ruary following a relatively safer January when 12 people were killed compared to 27 deaths during the rst month in 2010. To-date this year, there has been 32 deaths compared to 35 at this time in 2010. “Improving Minnesota road safety is the responsibility of every driver,” says Lt. Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol. “These fatal crashes demonstrate that it takes just one poor decision or one small lapse in judgment to lead to a tragic event on the road.” Roeske stresses that motorists buckle up, drive at safe speeds, pay attention and never drive impaired. Red Cross has ‘Hero’ fundraiser In celebration of Red Cross Month, six local stores are joining forces with the Carver County Red Cross to raise funds and awareness for the organization. Red Cross “Hero” squares will be available at each loca- tion for purchase at $1 apiece. The squares, along with donors’ names, will be posted to a “Red Cross Wall of Heroes” in each store. Red Cross volunteers will be on hand at each location to sell the squares and answer questions about the organiza- tion, according to a Red Cross press release. Participating locations in- clude Econo Foods in Norwood Young America, Market Place Foods in Watertown, Mack- enthun’s in Waconia, Cooper’s County Market in Chaska, the Chaska Dunn Bros, and Fresh Seasons Market in Victoria. Volunteers from the Red Cross will be at these locations dur- ing the dates and times listed below: Econo Foods, Norwood Young America, Saturday March 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Market Place Foods, Wa- tertown, Thursday March 10 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Chaska Dunn Bros, Chas- ka, Saturday March 12 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Cooper’s County Mkt., Chaska, Saturday March 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fresh Season, Victoria, Saturday March 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mackenthun’s, Waconia, Saturday March 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.carvercountyredcross. org, or call (952) 467-4449. Watch out for troopers The Minnesota State Patrol’s message to motorists pay attention. Troopers are under- scoring the importance of their message after eight troopers have been hit on the road since Sunday, Feb. 20. The latest crash happened Feb. 22, in which the squad car of a state trooper was struck while the trooper was arresting a drunk driver on 694 and Silver Lake Road in New Brighton. Trooper Tim Peter- son sustained facial injuries. “It doesn’t matter the road conditions; drivers need to pay attention,” stated Lt. Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol, in a press release. “A majority of troopers have been hit because people were not paying attention or driving too fast. Drivers need to be alert for ashing lights and move over to ensure we can do our jobs safely and the people we are helping are out of danger.” During winter (Nov. 1, 2010–present), 31 troopers have been hit (compared to 13 at this time last winter). Minnesota’s “Move Over” law: When traveling on a road with two or more lanes, you must keep over one full lane away from stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights activated, including ambu- lance, fire, law enforcement, maintenance and construction vehicles. Reduce speed if you are un- able to safely move over a lane. PHOTO BY FORREST ADAMS Wm. Blair Anderson, the new chief deputy for the Carver County Sheriff ’s Office, greets the Chanhassen City Council on Monday night. Anderson was joined at the meeting by Sgt. Peter Anderley, who gave his monthly law enforcement update, and Sheriff Jim Olson, at left, who appeared before the council for the rst time since he was elected sheriff in November. MEET THE DEPUTY PUBLIC HEALTH Area is part of historic cancer study Research will span decades BY SHANNON FIECKE sfi[email protected]. Area residents, who have rallied for years to raise mon- ey for cancer research, now have a unique chance to ght the disease. The Scott County Relay for Life is one of only four such Minnesota events se- lected as enrollment sites this year for the American Cancer Society’s third-ever cancer prevention study. The society is seeking 500,000 people nationwide to give blood and then document their health habits periodical- ly over the next 20 to 30 years to help researchers better understand cancer. Enrollment began at pilot sites across the country in 2007, with 140,000 signed up so far. Enrollment came to Min- nesota in 2009, but the public can only sign up at specific relays. On July 8 , people from around Twin Cities can enroll at the Relay for Life in Shako- pee. Enrollment will also be taken at relays in Mankato and two northern Minnesota counties. Cancer Society volunteers are recruiting local businesses to spread the word to employ- ees, and they plan to blanket the community with presen- tations to various groups and organizations. The American Cancer Soci- ety’s rst two research studies were groundbreaking, and Ruby Winings, who is head- ing the Scott County effort, believes Cancer Prevention Study- 3 will be as well. “Research is the answer to ghting this disease,” said Winings, who enrolled the first chance she could at a training session. “This is a historic opportunity. Someday they could be talking about an advancement they made from this study and I will know that by my participation, that hap- pened. It will be awesome to say to my kids and grandkids I helped with that.” The rst cancer study began in the 1950s and linked tobacco and lung cancer. It led to the U.S. surgeon general’s warn- ing labels on cigarettes and numerous smoke-free legisla- tive measures. Smoking rates dropped from half of all men to about 23 percent today. The last study started in 1982 and is just nishing up, Winings said. It showed the impact of obesity on cancer, and linked hormonal therapy to breast cancer. For some people, this will be their only opportunity to participate in something like this, said Winings. “This is not going to be back in Scott County next year.” The Scott County Relay did not apply to be a host site, but was selected for its past per- formance. “This is grass-roots re- search. It’s very exciting that we were chosen to do this,” said Gail Jolitz of Shakopee, who will be making presenta- tions and contacting past relay participants. “I’m excited to get the word out.” The promotions committee hopes to hit a lot of non-relay participants, as well as local ethnic communities. Any help or suggestions are appreci- ated. Cancer study Want to help? Cancer study enrollment is July 8 at the Scott County Relay for Life. More info: Visit cancer. org/cps3; email cps3@ cancer.org, or call (888) 604-5888. Presentations: Receive e-mail alerts or request a presentation to a business or organization by contacting Ruby Winings at (952) 445-6354 or cps3scottcounty@gmail. com. Eligible participants: Willing to make a long- term commitment to the study, which involves completing periodic follow- up surveys at home over the next 20 to 30 years. Between 30 and 65 years old. Never been diagnosed with cancer (excluding basal and squamous cell skin cancer). It’s an honor to be chosen, and organizers want to show Scott County was worthy by enrolling as many study par- ticipants as they can. The real mark of success, however, won’t be the number who initially enroll and give blood at the Relay, but how many follow through with the surveys sent to their home. “This study isn’t for every- body,” Winings said. “Maybe you are not the type of person who will follow-up, but you can still help by spreading the word.”

PUBLIC SAFETY

Cologne woman dies

during deadly weekAccording to preliminary

Minnesota Department of Pub-lic Safety (DPS) traffi c crash re-ports, nine people died during a seven-day period (Feb. 17–23), making it the deadliest period on Minnesota roads in 2011.

Ashley Meuwissen, 23, of Cologne, died after her vehicle was broadsided at about 9:30 a.m. Feb. 17 while attempting to cross Highway 212 at Highway 284 in Cologne, according to the DPS.

DPS offi cials say the traffi c death rate accelerated in Feb-ruary following a relatively safer January when 12 people were killed compared to 27 deaths during the fi rst month in 2010.

‘Hero’ fundraiserIn celebration of Red Cross

Month, six local stores are joining forces with the Carver

County Red Cross to raise funds and awareness for the organization.

Red Cross “Hero” squares will be available at each loca-tion for purchase at $1 apiece. The squares, along with donors’ names, will be posted to a “Red Cross Wall of Heroes” in each store. Red Cross volunteers will be on hand at each location to sell the squares and answer questions about the organiza-tion, according to a Red Cross press release.

Participating locations in-clude Econo Foods in Norwood Young America, Market Place Foods in Watertown, Mack-enthun’s in Waconia, Cooper’s County Market in Chaska, the Chaska Dunn Bros, and Fresh Seasons Market in Victoria. Watch out

for troopersThe Minnesota State Patrol’s

message to motorists — pay attention. Troopers are under-scoring the importance of their message after eight troopers have been hit on the road since Sunday, Feb. 20. The latest crash happened Feb. 22, in which the squad car of a state trooper was struck while the trooper was arresting a drunk driver on 694 and Silver Lake Road in New Brighton. Trooper Tim Peter-son sustained facial injuries.

“It doesn’t matter the road conditions; drivers need to pay attention,” stated Lt. Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol, in a press release. “A majority of troopers have been hit because people were not paying attention or driving too fast. Drivers need to be alert for fl ashing lights and move over to ensure we can do our jobs safely and the people we are helping are out of danger.”

During winter ( Nov. 1, 2010–present), 31 troopers have been hit (compared to 13 at this time last winter).

Minnesota’s “Move Over” law:

When traveling on a road with two or more lanes, you must keep over one full lane away from stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights activated, including ambu-lance, fire, law enforcement, maintenance and construction vehicles.

Reduce speed if you are un-able to safely move over a lane.

PUBLIC HEALTH

Area is part of historic cancer studyResearch will span decadesBY SHANNON FIECKE

sfi [email protected].

Area residents, who have rallied for years to raise mon-ey for cancer research, now have a unique chance to fi ght the disease. The Scott County Relay for Life is one of only four such Minnesota events se-lected as enrollment sites this year for the American Cancer Society’s third-ever cancer prevention study.

T he societ y is seeki ng 500,000 people nationwide to give blood and then document their health habits periodical-ly over the next 20 to 30 years to help researchers better understand cancer.

Enrollment began at pilot sites across the country in 2007, with 140,000 signed up so far. Enrollment came to Min-nesota in 2009, but the public can only sign up at specific relays.

On Ju ly 8 , people from around Twin Cities can enroll at the Relay for Life in Shako-pee. Enrollment will also be taken at relays in Mankato and two northern Minnesota counties.

Cancer Society volunteers are recruiting local businesses to spread the word to employ-ees, and they plan to blanket the community with presen-tations to various groups and organizations.

The American Cancer Soci-ety’s fi rst two research studies were groundbreaking, and Ruby Winings, who is head-ing the Scott County effort, believes Cancer Prevention

Study-3 will be as well. “Research is the answer

to fi ghting this disease,” said Winings, who enrolled the first chance she could at a training session. “This is a historic opportunity. Someday they could be talking about an advancement they made from this study and I will know that by my participation, that hap-pened. It will be awesome to say to my kids and grandkids I helped with that.”

The fi rst cancer study began in the 1950s and linked tobacco and lung cancer. It led to the U.S. surgeon general’s warn-ing labels on cigarettes and numerous smoke-free legisla-tive measures. Smoking rates dropped from half of all men to about 23 percent today.

The last study started in 1982 and is just fi nishing up, Winings said. It showed the impact of obesity on cancer, and linked hormonal therapy to breast cancer.

For some people, this will be their only opportunity to participate in something like this, said Winings. “This is not going to be back in Scott County next year.”

The Scott County Relay did not apply to be a host site, but was selected for its past per-formance.

“This is grass-roots re -search. It’s very exciting that we were chosen to do this,” said Gail Jolitz of Shakopee, who will be making presenta-tions and contacting past relay participants. “I’m excited to get the word out.”

The promotions committee hopes to hit a lot of non-relay participants, as well as local ethnic communities. Any help or suggestions are appreci-ated.

Cancer studyWant to help? Cancer study enrollment is July 8 at the Scott County Relay for Life.

Presentations: Receive e-mail alerts or request a presentation to a business or organization by contacting Ruby Winings at (952) 445-6354 or [email protected].

Eligible participants:

Willing to make a long-term commitment to the study, which involves completing periodic follow-up surveys at home over the next 20 to 30 years. Between 30 and 65 years old. Never been diagnosed with cancer (excluding basal and squamous cell skin cancer).

It’s an honor to be chosen, and organizers want to show Scott County was worthy by enrolling as many study par-ticipants as they can.

The real mark of success, however, won’t be the number who initially enroll and give blood at the Relay, but how many follow through with the surveys sent to their home.

“This study isn’t for every-body,” Winings said. “Maybe you are not the type of person who will follow-up, but you can still help by spreading the word.”
