FEATURED SPEAKERSJon E. Grant, JD, MD, MPH, is a professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at The University of Chicago where he has led the NCRG Center of Excellence in Gambling

Research since 2012. Dr. Grant has been honored twice with the NCRG Scientific Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of study of gambling disorder.

Heather Gray, PhD, is associate director of academic affairs at the Division on Addiction, Cambridge Health Alliance, a Harvard Medical School (HMS) Teaching Hospital, and an instructor in psychiatry at HMS. Her research interests include the

development of, and recovery from, addictive disorders and how people gamble and respond to interventions designed to promote responsible gambling.

Blaine Graboyes is co-founder and CEO of GameCo, inventor of the video game casino, and CEO of The Gamer Agency, the premiere independent esports production company. GameCo is uniting the experience of playing video games with the excitement of

gambling by creating the world’s first skill-based Video Game Gambling Machines (VGM™) approved by regulators. Graboyes is an award-winning executive producer and game designer with over twenty years’ experience developing digital entertainment.

Hedy Kober, PhD, is an assistant professor of psychiatry and psychology at the Yale School of Medicine, where she runs the Clinical & Affective Neuroscience Laboratory. The lab takes a cognitive-neuroscience

approach to clinical questions, uses state-of-the-art neuroimaging methods, and organizes around a few interrelated themes such as craving, substance use disorders, mindfulness and meditation.

J. Carlos Rivera is the executive director of White Bison, Inc. He is an enrolled member with the Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians. Rivera served as a substance abuse treatment provider for 10 years at the Sacramento

Native American Health Center.

David H. Rosmarin, PhD, ABPP, is director of the Spirituality and Mental Health Program at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor of psychology in the department of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He supervises the provision of spiritually-integrated services

in clinical units throughout the hospital’s divisional structure, and collaborates with laboratories to study the clinical relevance of spirituality to anxiety, mood, psychotic, substance use and other disorders.

Randy Stinchfield, PhD, is assistant professor emeritus in the department of psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He is a leading researcher on youth gambling and the developer of screening instruments and a treatment outcome measure for

gambling disorder. Dr. Stinchfield was the 2012 recipient of the NCRG Scientific Achievement Award.

Jerome Wakefield, DSW, PhD, has been University Professor and professor in the Silver School of Social Work at New York University since 2003. His scholarly specialty is the conceptual foundations of clinical theory. He is the author of over 200 publications

appearing in journals and books in psychology, philosophy, psychiatry, psychoanalysis and social work.

Jeremiah Weinstock, PhD, is associate professor of psychology at Saint Louis University. His research interests are gambling disorder, alcohol use disorders, cocaine and heroin dependence, motivational interviewing, contingency

management, cognitive behavioral therapy and treatment outcome.

Dr. Wakefield raises the question of how to distinguish between a medical/psychiatric disorder and normal behaviors that are eccentric, unconventional or a normal response to distress. He has critiqued the DSM criteria for failing to adequately draw this distinction. In this session, he will explain his critique and apply his perspective to the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for addictions, including alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder and gambling disorder.Learning Objectives:As a result of this session, attendees will be able to:• Explain Dr. Wakefield’s critique of DSM-5 based on his “harmful

dysfunction” analysis• Identify two changes in the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for alcohol

Will the ICD follow the DSM-5 on the reclassification of “Gambling Disorder” as an Addiction? Or, maintain the classification of “pathological gambling” as an impulse control disorder? Because of the high rate of co-occurring disorders among people with a gambling problem, addiction centers are increasingly interested in screening clients in treatment for gambling disorder. This session will feature case studies from two substance use treatment centers that began to screen for gambling disorder among DUI and methadone clients.Learning ObjectivesAs a result of this session, attendees will be able to:• Identify the percentage of disordered gamblers with substance

Research indicates that craving for drugs is similar neurobiologically and psychologically to gambling urges. This session will discuss these findings and also address the promise of mindfulness for substance use disorders treatment and implications for treatment of gambling disorder.

PLENARY SESSION (1 CE Hour)5 - 6 p.m.Integrating Gambling into Existing Health SurveysSpeaker: Randy Stinchfield, PhDImportant data about gambling disorder has been derived by adding gambling questions to large-scale studies such as NESARC, National Comorbidity Survey Replication, the Harvard College Alcohol Study and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). In addition to the considerable cost savings of this approach, integrating gambling into existing health surveys affords researchers the opportunity to explore relationships between gambling problems and other health problems. The session will discuss how public health professionals, researchers and members of the gaming industry should proceed if interested in pursuing this approach.Learning ObjectiveAs a result of this session, attendees will be able to:• Identify examples of gambling questions to add to surveys• Identify procedures for adding questions to statewide BRFSS surveys

The NCRG recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of research on gambling disorder with the annual NCRG Scientific Achievement Award. We invite nominations in the following categories:• Research investigators at any stage in their career — early stage,

mid-career or senior — whose research has made a significant contribution to the knowledge base about gambling disorder

• Educators who have successfully mentored young investigators in the field or have excelled at promoting public awareness and education about gambling disorder and responsible gaming

• A recent publication in a scientific, peer-reviewed journal that represents seminal work in the field

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING A NOMINATIONThe nomination package must include the following:• Letter of recommendation: A detailed letter describing the worthiness

of the nominee or nominated work, specifying the contribution to the field of gambling studies and significance

• Curriculum vitae (CV):• For individual nominees, include an up-to-date CV• For research investigators, include a comprehensive bibliography

of the nominee’s publications• Publications: For research investigators, submit no more than five

scientific publications representative of the nominee’s work. When nominating a publication, include a copy of the published version of the article. The publication must have been published in the same year or the year prior to the nomination

CALL FOR POSTERS POSTER SESSION: OCT. 1, 2017 Deadline for abstracts: Aug. 1, 2017

The NCRG showcases new research on gambling disorder during a poster session and reception held at the NCRG Conference. This event is an opportunity for investigators to report on their empirical research and discuss their findings with conference attendees. Each year, a committee selects the recipients of the Outstanding Poster Award and honorable mention.

SUBJECT MATTERPosters can focus on any aspects of gambling problems and gambling disorder and must report on empirical research. Abstracts will be reviewed for scientific merit.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINESAbstracts should be submitted electronically in MS Word or another word processing software using a font size no smaller than 12 pt. PDFs will not be accepted. Please include the following information:• Title of Presentation• Name(s) and affiliation(s) of the author(s)• Mailing address, telephone and email address of the first author• Poster abstract (no more than 500 words). Please follow APA format for text and references.

The abstract should address the following:

• Sample and methods

• Preliminary findings

• Implications for the field

• Digital signature of first author certifying that any work with human or animal subjects in the abstract complies with the guiding policies and principles for experimental procedures of the World Medical Association of Helsinki.

By submitting a poster, at least one author must agree to attend the conference and to participate in the poster session. No individual can be first author on more than one submission.
