Large portions of Standerton and Meyerville were dumped in darkness for almost six hours on Monday evening, 15 February, when a current transformer switch in the industrial area burned out. Hello darkness, my old friend

‘n Vrou van Standerton was Saterdag, 13 Februarie, in ‘n ongeluk in Standerton SuperSpar se parkeerterrein betrokke.

Isaak Khumalo, a local resident who travelled on the R23 between Standerton and Volksrust on Monday, 15 February, at about 02:00, said that when he approached the last stop-and-go before Standerton, he noticed that the road was open but the light was red. He waited patiently for 35 minutes for the light to turn green, but later decided to check on the operator as there was no oncoming traffic and the light remained red. When he opened the door to the shelter he found the operator manning the stop-and-go on the Perdekop side, fast asleep. The operator did not wake up, even after this photo was taken with a flash. Isaak is concerned about such safety violations as it is dangerous for vehicles to travel unsupervised during the night at this particular section of road works.

STANDERTON - Disgruntled Lekwa Local Municipality workers affiliated to the South African Municipal Worker’s Union, SAMWU, took to the streets to express their anger and disgust against the Municipal Manager, Mr Linda Tshabalala, on Wednesday, 10 February. They had a memorandum of concerns and dissatisfactions intended to hand over to the Executive Mayor, Councillor LR Dhlamini. The march started at Standerton Taxi Rank around 8:00 and hundreds of angry workers who had abandoned their offices and field work marched along Mbonani Mayisela Street to the Municipal building in the CBD. They were waving signs and chanting slogans, calling for the Municipal Manager to leave their pension and medical aids alone.

As they arrived at the Municipal building, they were expecting the Executive Mayor, Chief Whip and the Speaker to come out to receive the memorandum, but the situation turned sour when none of the expected political leaders were in the building.

Workers opted to hand in the memorandum to the ANC councillors, but they were not in the building either. Angry workers made a resolution that they would not be going back

to work until the memorandum was attended to. They called the ANC regional office in Ermelo to send a

high ranking regional officer to come to Standerton to receive their memorandum, threatening to occupy the Municipal offices if their demand was not met. For the better part of the day there were no services to the public at the offices until the ANC regional Deputy Chairman, Doctor Mtshali, arrived at 13:30.

The memorandum was read in public before being handed over to Mr Mtshali. Workers demanded to know why the Municipality fails to pay their contributions to their medical aid and pension funds respectively since November 2015. Workers demanded from the Municipality to pay a housing allowance to all deserving employees dating back to August 2015 when an agreement was signed by both parties.

Workers also demanded from the Municipality to remove all contractors working under Lekwa Municipality by the end of February 28 and demanded that the Municipality maintain its fleet of vehicles and stop renting vehicles from a private company, which costs the Municipality a lot of money that amounts to about R15 000 per vehicle, per month. Workers

demanded the Auditor General’s report to be made public for all the tax payers in Lekwa.

Protesters wanted to know why the Municipality is seen to be in a financial crisis and on the verge of collapse. They demanded the Municipality to halt the process of privatisation of other parts of local government like the Licensing Department.

Workers then demand that the Municipality pay employees according to the current grading of the Municipality as much as the councillors who are already paid accordingly. Finally the protesters called for the ANC to recall the Municipal Manager with immediate effect - failure to do so will cause these workers to not return to work.

They vowed to make the Municipality ungovernable until their demands were met within seven days. Mr Mtshali confirmed that the ANC regional office will look into the memorandum. Responding to the concerns of workers in the memorandum, the Municipal Manager, Linda Tshabalala, said he submitted responses and answers to the Executive Mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip. If the need arises his office will release a media statement soon. DM

MORGENZON - The DA will lay criminal charges against Lekwa Municipal Manager, Linda Tshabalala, for wilfully polluting the environment by failing to effectively manage waste at the Morgenzon dumpsite. The dumpsite has reached its capacity and as a result, waste material is now flowing onto the road, into a nearby dam and is also littering neighbouring farms.

The DA wrote a letter to Mr Tshabalala in October last year, raising concerns about the increased environmental hazard stemming from the poorly managed dumpsite. Mr Tshabalala responded by promising that the dumpsite would be closed by last November. To this day it has remained open.

According to Section 16(1)(d-e) of the National Environment Management: Waste Act, 59 of 2008 (NEMA); the holder of the waste, (in this case, the municipality, under the leadership of Linda Tshabalala) must take all reasonable measures to manage the waste in such a way that it does not endanger people’s health or the environment or cause nuisance through noise, odour or visual impact.

The section goes on to clearly instruct Mr Tshabalala to prevent any employee or person under his supervision

from contravening this Act.Mr Tshabalala is no stranger to controversy resulting

from his failure to uphold NEMA. Just last year, residents of Standerton were infuriated

over the fact that waste material was being burnt at the local dumpsite. No one should be forced to live with the constant smell of decomposing waste simply because the municipality is not committed to creating a better life for its residents. No one should be subjected to the possible contamination and disease that could spread from negligent and unlawful waste mismanagement.

To this end, the DA will lay criminal charges under sections 16 (1)(d-e), 21 and 26 (1)(a-b) of NEMA, for disposing of waste in a manner that is likely to harm the environment, and contaminate the water and cause a public health hazard to the nearby residents.

The state, and by extension, municipalities, are responsible for the good health and protection of citizens who they represent and the DA will use every means possible to ensure that those responsibilities are enforced so that the citizens have the opportunity for a healthy existence. (Councillor Muso Kubheka, DA Councillor for Lekwa Municipality) JD

And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was listening to His teaching. - Luke 10:39.

You will not enjoy the present moment and the gifts it contains if you don’t have a balanced attitude towards work. Luke 10:38-42 tells the story of Jesus’ visit to the home of two sisters, Mary and Martha. Martha was overly occupied and too busy (see Luke 10:40). Mary sat down at Jesus’ feet and listened to what He had to say.

Jesus said Mary made the better choice. Jesus did not tell Martha not to work, but He did tell her not to be frustrated or have a bad attitude while she worked.

Jesus wants you to work hard, but He also wants you to be wise enough to realise when you should stop all activity and not miss the miracle of the moment.

Focus on having balance in your life, enjoying work and knowing when to stop and enjoy other things.

Don’t miss the miracleIt’s not the whites oppressing you, it’s the privileged and rich blacks driving this “white oppressors” slogan, causing hatred and inflaming racial conflict between races in both the middle class and the poor.

These rich black guys use this to pocket more from the creamy top, whilst the “fights” are carried out on ground level. The rich are getting richer and get the support of the masses, because they are being fooled by stating it is the whites oppressing them. This is just a front and a dream being fed, that you can also be rich if you take what was yours to be from the start. Bias!

When black and white people do realise this, SA will calm down and the real issues will be looked at.

Issues like the rich blacks and their friends are corrupt. Companies need to be BBEEE validated and enforced to tip the ratio – yet another fear tactic of the rich to deviate away from the rich controlling and enriching themselves even more.

Companies and businesses should not be dictated to by the “mafia.” A free economical system should give them and the consumer the choice of a free market place. I say: “Stop the BBEEE. Stop spreading the idea that whites are privileged. Stop the corruption.”

I am a South African, part of the minority. I have the same right as my fellow patriots in this country I was born in. I do not own land. I do not have a company. I do not own a

house. I do not have a steady income. I am also seeking employment. I also go to bed hungry. I also have kids that need to be educated in their home language. I also have dreams and hopes and I also want the above, just like you – may you be white, black, coloured, or indian.

I want to be treated equally and have equal rights. I do not want to be controlled by the minority of rich dictators in this country.

I was born free, yet I am forced to be led like a sheep to the slaughter, by the minority of corrupt people in our country.

I say this must be stopped. I will not accept any man other than myself, rule over my fate.~ Bill Harington (sic)

It’s not the fault of the whites

Permit me to express my thoughts around the heading above, coined by Mr Luwaca in his letter, dated 5 February. The writer punctuated his comments by stating subtly that if as a former Municipal Manager he was dismissed for poor work performance, then by implication why not the current Municipal Manager Mr Linda who has plunged the Municipality to the bottomless abyss. The writer cited that the ANC Councilors led by JQ Radebe and Mayet then were adamant that MM (Mr Luwaca) must be dismissed and indeed he was ultimately dismissed.

Question must then be asked what makes the current animal more equal than the previous one and my analysis is simple for every man in the street to understand.

Mr Luwaca, truth is the councillors during the era of Juliet Radebe were accountable directly to the public, unlike the current crop of 27 ANC councillors who are accountable and reporting in Nelspruit to DD Mabuza and if any dares defy his orders he is recalled. It’s the same system even nationally; wide men and women chose to be fools to protect Nkandla than defy the orders from Luthuli house in order to keep bread on the table for their families and Thuli Madonsela was publicly attacked by the stooges in the youth league and called by names.

The ANC goal is clear and that is to siphon millions of tax payers money to the coffers of DD Mabuza and his cahoots in Luthuli house and Linda Tshabalala is a deployed agent of corruption who from the onset they knew very well that he is not suitably qualified and lack municipal experience but this did not concern them and his next day office is only guaranteed as long as he execute their mandate and thus far he has done superbly well.

He also appointed a clueless Manager in the community services who was a prison warder

with no municipal experience whatsoever. He appointed Infrarent when the Municipality could afford to buy its own vehicles as a result it has drained the Municipal cash flow to a point that employees’ Pension funds and Medical Aid are no longer paid, and defaulted on the agreement to service the Eskom account.

The rumour is doing rounds that this same infrarent was appointed illegally and it’s period is three years and that in itself is unlawful in that it should not exceed the term of this current council which ends when local government elections are held and the AG has made it clear that it is costly and has no material benefit to the municipality. Infrarent like many other lucrative deals in Lekwa are well designed as a best method to embezzle hard earned tax payers money and the winners of these deals they know what to do when they receive black plastic bags soon after millions have been deposited into their bank accounts.

Mr. Luwaca this animal will never be dismissed your friend is frank with you when he said ‘kuyatshiwa ngoku’ in the ANC corruption has the blessing from the highest office we need leaders who are elected and accountable directly to the community including the Mayors, Premiers and President but the ANC will not change this electoral system for their corruption thrives under this system.

Mr Luwaca you are spot on, keep on educating the public though good students are very few these days due to poverty of stomach that has grossly affected the brain functioning and enslaved us to those who holds public purse. Zeph Mthunzi

‘Waterskou’ laat veel te wense

STANDERTON - Two white males, aged between 21 and 39, were arrested on Friday morning, 12 February, at about 02:45 after they were found in possession of suspected stolen property.

Crime prevention members, while conducting a waylay near the field on the Volksrust road, noticed vehicle lights and approached it on foot. They found two very intoxicated white men and as they were searching the vehicle noticed a toolbox and bottles of beer.

The owner of the property was called to the scene and he positively identified the toolbox as his. The suspects were taken to Vrede Police Station for questioning which led to a successful recovery of a buggy that

was stolen earlier last week at the Amanzini resort.

Both suspects were charged with possession of stolen goods and the police were at that time still looking for a third suspect who fled the scene. A 29-year-old white man was subsequently arrested on Sunday, 14 February, at about 14:00 in Standerton.

All three suspects appeared in the Vrede Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 February, for the first time. They are still held in custody. JD

STANDERTON - On Friday, 12 February, Lekwa Local Municipality workers intensified their demonstration and stayed away from work. All services were brought to a standstill as workers gathered at the town hall to meet with the ANC regional office bearers, the ANC councillors and the Executive Mayor.

During the meeting it is reported that the Executive Mayor made a commitment that he will go through the demands and concerns of the workers to see if the Municipal Council will be able to resolve the issues that were tabled.

He asked workers not to panic about their pension fund and medical

aid, because the money has been paid to the respective institutions and he has the proof. He however acknowledged that there was a delay in scheduled payments due to cash flow challenges.

Regarding the demand from the protesters to recall the Municipal Manager, a SAMWU spokesperson only known as Sibusiso said that workers agreed to the proposal by the ANC regional Chairperson to refer the matter to the ANC Provincial Executive Committee.

In addition to this, workers will get feedback on Monday, 22 February. Workers have in principle agreed to suspend picketing for now. DM

STANDERTON – Employees who were picketing in front of the town hall on Friday, 12 February, complained about the exuberant costs of renting vehicles amongst other things.

The Municipal Manager received a new fleet of vehicles delivered at the offices of Lekwa Local Municipality’s Traffic Department. Six Isuzu vehicles consisting of three double cabs, three long base bakkies and three waste removal lorries were delivered by Afrirent Fleet Management Service on a three-year lease agreement with Lekwa Municipality. To this date a total of twenty vehicles are on the books of the Municipality in different departments.

Lekwa’s Municipal Manager, Mr L Tshabalala, said that due to financial constraints, the municipality could not afford the monthly rental of these vehicles. Subsequently the Municipality has opted to get into the three year lease agreement with the supplier at a lower cost. He said the new fleet of waste removal lorries has a bigger capacity to collect high volumes of waste at once, which will cut travelling costs to and from the dump site. He urged employees to take care of the vehicles and appealed to the public to blow the whistle if vehicles are abused in any way. DM

Lekwa Local Municipality workers picketed outside the town hall on Friday, before they were addressed by the Executive Mayor and ANC regional chairman.

A new fleet of vehicles to boost Municipal service delivery comes amidst talks of already exuberant costs pertaining to the renting of vehicles for these services.

JD

STANDERTON - #OperationHydrate is an initiative that has been undertaken by a few individuals to give back to com-munities in need as a result of the severe drought that has gripped our country with some provinces already declared disaster areas.

The project seeks to deliver drinkable water to thousands that are in need of this necessary resource. To achieve this noble cause, the organization is relying on dona-tions from individuals and the business sector. Over the past few weeks they have delivered 6.5 million litres of water to the desperate and destitute.

Livestock in the affected areas have also been affected by this difficulty. Farmers are desperate to save their animals. The success of the project depends on the sup-port of all parties. Financial assistance

from individuals and the business sector will be greatly appreciated. They appeal to everyone’s sense of humanity - to dig deep in their pockets and help them deliver water to South Africans who cannot afford to buy water. They ask donations in 5-litre sealed bottles, it must not be tap or bore-hole water. Standerton has established drop-off points at the following places: Quick Check, OBC Chicken, Just Glass, Oasis, 8 Cairncross Street and 136 Sydney de Lange Street in Stanwest.

For financial support: Operation Hy-drate - Absa Business Banking, Account no: 9314587739. The cost of 5-litre bot-tles are R10 each at most local water deal-ers. To avoid any disappointment, vehicle owners should go to the licensing authority armed with all of the required address verification docu-mentation to comply with the new regulations.

Rules regarding registering vehicles, renew-ing licence discs and driver’s licences have changed. Jeff, originally from Nelspruit, said he studied from 1981 to 1985 to become a baker in Johannesburg and Pretoria. He became a baker because that was the only job he could get when he was young.

JD

VOLKSRUST - The SAVF Louis Hildebrandt Chil-dren’s Home in Volksrust was established during Feb-ruary of 1998 at Perdekop, Mpumalanga. During 2003, twelve houses in Juba Park, Volksrust, were donated by Eskom and the Children’s Home then relocated to Volksrust.

Currently the SAVF Louis Hildebrandt Children’s Home accommodates 90 children that were found in need of care in terms of the Children’s Act, no 38 of 2005, as amended. These children come from differ-ent areas, such as Standerton, Secunda, Evander, Grey-lingstad, Balfour, Delmas, Leandra, Kriel, Emalahleni, Bethal, Middelburg, Piet Retief, Amersfoort, Lyden-burg and Ermelo.

The Children’s Home receives a subsidy from the De-partment of Social Development, but this money is not enough to cover all their financial expenditures. There-fore they are also dependent on the public for donations and contributions.During 2015 five of their children successfully completed Grade 12. At this stage, they

have five girls that must go on a netball outing. There are also six Grade3 pupils that must attend a weekend camp and three of their Grade 7 pupils that must go on an outing to the Lowveld.

In the light of the abovementioned, they kindly re-quest the public to open their hearts and wallets to ena-ble these children to attend these school events. Further needs are schoolbags, funding of school outings, spiked running shoes for a boy that competes in athletics and donations of food and clothing.

The Children’s Home is currently experiencing se-vere financial difficulties and therefore any donations or financial support will be highly appreciated. Your contribution can be deducted from your tax as they can provide you with a Section 18A certificate.

The Children’s Home would also make use of this opportunity to give word of sincere appreciation to the public for your continued support and involvement with the SAVF Louis Hildebrandt Children’s Home.‘For the sake of our children’. JD

neem.

JD
