19 March 2020 From the Japanese Room - White Day Last month the ladies at Coolum honoured the men teachers on Valentine’s Day. They received lots of chocolates. Last Friday was the time for the men to honour the ladies. This is the custom in Japan. Normally this happens on March 14 but we do this on parade so everyone can see what happens. It is said that the return gift from the men should be two or three times in value what was given by the ladies. I am not sure if it worked out like that! White chocolates are offered to the teachers, thanks to the men for the white feast. Chopstick relays on both parades provided a lot of fun. (Wendy Jonas) Thank you to Sensei Wendy Jonas for organising this annual activity. (Ross Naumann) The ladies receiving their white chocolates on both parades. Chopsticks relay

Parades Parades have been cancelled until further notice. (Pat Cavanagh) Ride to School Day Thank you to parents and students for supporting Ride2School Day. 73 students attended the bike bus from Coles carpark to the school last Friday morning. This was a great number considering the showery conditions earlier in the morning. Two students each won a movie ticket in the draw on parade. Thank you to Clare from our P&C and Coles (who provided bananas and water for the children) for their support. (Ross Naumann)

Happy and enthusiastic cyclists on National Ride2School Day

Year 5 camp 2020 Year 5 camp this year was so much fun. We went down to Currimundi Rec Centre, where we did lots of activities. The most popular activity was the giant swing but we also did alpine rescue, catapults, high ropes, stand-up paddle boarding, beach activities, circus skills and team challenges. So many people were really brave and went all the way to the top of the giant swing. We would like to say thank you to all the teachers and parents that came and helped to make this camp happen. (By Mystie and Lucy)

Curriculum Support - Learning at Home The following links may be of assistance to families at this time to support learning at home. https://coolumss.eq.edu.au/curriculum/class-activities Curriculum materials are also available from the Department of Education website https://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/learning-at-home (Karen Hatchman) Bullying No Way The National day of Action against Bullying and Violence is on Friday, 20 March. At Coolum State School, we will acknowledge this with participation in classroom activities. Next week Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classes will engage in activities with their classroom teacher, to promote awareness. Year 3 students will participate in discussions led by Mr Dwyer or Mrs Sharry. Year 4-6 students will also be involved in classroom focused sessions during week 9/10, when they have returned from camp. (Beth Sharry) Save the Date: NAPLAN – 2020 On 12-14 May our Years 3 and 5 students will be participating in the annual paper based NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. At Coolum School we encourage all of our students to participate. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about your child’s participation or if your child will be unable to participate for any reason e.g. family holiday. (Karen Hatchman) Bike Education Coolum State School will again offer a Bike Education program to Year 4 students next week. The program consists of a practical cycle skills session with the aim of raising awareness of basic road safety whilst improving each student’s cycle skills. Delivering formal cycling training provides students at a young age with the road sense and skills to travel confidently on the road. The end result will be students more motivated to ride their bikes more frequently with improved traffic awareness to keep them safer. A cycle skills course will be set up on the school grounds for the day and it will include a number of traffic signs (Stop, Give Way etc). Each session will have a games led approach (appropriate for the age of the students) to engage the students while teaching them how to become aware of the traffic around them. Where possible students are encouraged to bring along their own bikes and helmets. To ensure no one misses Bike On provide bikes & helmets for anyone unable to bring their own. (Ross Naumann) The timetable is: Tuesday 24 March 2020

If however they are using our bikes & helmets please be reassured we are disinfecting the key contact points between sessions.
