Race was delayed by one week due to rain.

Other US events of 1924“SPEED, speed, speed!Driving horses, autos and airplanes, men race at top speed, for the edification of onlookers, or for their own pleasure.Within the space of 24 hours, last week, three "speed kings," foremost of their fellows on the turf, on the auto race track, and in the air, engaged in their last race against time, and lost—to Death.Lieut. Alex Pearson, United States air service, was driving his plane 260 miles an hour at Wilbur Wright field, Dayton, when awing crumpled and he plunged to death. At Brooklands, England, in an attempt to set a new speed record, Dario Resta, famous automobile racer, lost control of his machine which crashed through a guard rail, killing him instantly. At Wheeling, W.Va., Edward "Pop" Geers, famous driver of the fastest race horses, was catapulted to the track when his horse stumbled and be died three hours later of his injuries.Of the three, "Pop" Geers was the best known. For fifty years he had been a lover of fine horses, and during the most of these years he had trained and driven them. He was not only the "dean" of race-horse drivers, but he was the best loved. His field was not limited to a few race tracks in the large cities, but he visited smaller places. Only this spring he was in Fremont. Two years ago he was in Sandusky. It can be said of these three men that they had succeeded in attaining the utmost in speed. They had few, if any, superiors. But what did it avail them—what did it avail the world? The public, of course, applauded, for the public is carried away by the speed mania, but this means nothing now to those whose lives were snuffed out.Sacrifices to speed are useless.”

Tri-State Auto Racing Association races.

Local church ministers urged non-participation in the horse racing at the Charleston Fairgrounds held on Saturday 14th in protest at the auto races being held on the 15th, publishing an open letter as follows:-“We, the undersigned pastors of Charleston churches, desire to register our protest against the automobileraces to be held at the Fair Grounds next Sunday. We are trying to face honestly our obligations as spiritual and moral leaders of this community. We believe this automobile race is an unwholesome commercialization of the Sabbath day; we believe it is an irreligious desecration of the day; we believe it is an immoral degradation of the spirit and intent of the day.We believe the churches which we serve are trying earnestly to make this community a wholesome place to live, and we feel very certain this spectacle next Sunday violates every principle for which we stand. We regret exceedingly that the Fair Grounds Association has let its grounds for this purpose. We speak with no malice or purpose to defame anyone, but we sincerely and earnestly exhort our people to wholly refrain from any sort of participation in this violation of the Sabbath Day.”

Following the race, Frank Lockhart’s win was protested by Baker. J.E.Jones, Mark Campbell and Nick Nickleson on tha basis that he had failed to compete in the qualifying trials preceding the race, and thatthe race officials had disregarded the rules of the contest in permitting him to enter.

On the 29th November, Jack Bullock, who participated in the race, raced around the same course in a stagedrace for a motion picture. He hit a loose wire left lying across the track, which jerked him partly out ofthe car, dragging him 200 yards before the car hit a bank. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

The original course length was to be 5 miles, but the course was shortened to 3.2 miles, reducing the length of the race from the scheduled 250 miles to 160. 33 cars qualified in the morning for the race, 38 by the afternoon, but 49 cars took the start.

Other Matters of the Year

Eddie Hearne was arrested on the US border on the 1st January for intoxication while driving when returning from races in Tijuana, Mexico. He was acquitted on the 25th January.

On 5th April it was announced by the Indianapolis Speedway that Ralph DePalma would not be competing in the annual 500 mile race as he had been disqualified by the AAA for participating in unrecognised race meetings during the winter on dirt tracks in California. The issue rumbled on through the year – on the 12th April, Secretary A.R.Corey of the International Motor Contest Association said “It is time that every one realized that automobile drivers can no longer afford to limit themselves to the paltry number of board tracks still remaining in this country. To expect professional racing drivers to limit themselves to five events a year is ridiculous.” On the 12th July DePalma applied to the New York Automobile Association for reinstatement, and on the 5th August he announced his success, having paid a heavy but undisclosed fine and signing a guarantee not to race on any other tracks except AAA supervised ones within the following year.

On the 19th July in Lafayette, IN, damage suits amounting to $45,000 were filed today in the Superior court against the Tippecanoe County Agricultural Association by John F.Rebman of Dayton, and Edward G.Boyer of Lafayette, through their attorney, Clyde Jones. The suits were placed as a result of an accident which occurred at the automobile races at the fairgrounds May 18. A car driven by Stewart Keith of Peru crashed through the fence and turned over on Boyer and Rebman. Theresult of the suit isn’t known.

At the end of October, Barney Oldfield, under his true name of Berna Eli Oldfield, filed for divorce, alleging that Mrs Rebecca Oldfield spent his money faster than he could make it. He said that they were married on the 7th January 1907, and separated on the 20th July 1923. On the 19th December in LA it was announced that Mrs Oldfield had been granted an “interlocutory degree of divorce”, she having alleged desertion and infidelity – Barney Oldfield did not contest this latter case.

On the 5th October, Barney Oldfield was arrested on the 5th October for driving at 87 miles per hour on the highway between Calexico and El Centro, CA. On arrest he was examined by the Calexico health officer and pronounced intoxicated.
