THE HONORABLE JOHN JOSEPH HEARNE
The momentous events of every age, even in the wake of disillusionment and
war, produce men of a stature worthy to meet the human entanglements of their generation. The turbulent advent of the Irish Republic has been no exception.
Animated by the legendary heroes of Ireland's relentless struggle for freedom,: The Honorable John Joseph Hearne, the present Ambassador from Ireland to the'
United States, has successfully and courageously performed the challenging duties
of state which his country has entrusted to his care. As an apostle for world peace, Mr. Hearne spent thirteen years of his official life as Ireland's representative at the League of Nations, attending every assembly until 1939.
When World War II severed the forces of humanity and jeopardized the safety of neutral Ireland, Mr. Hearne was summoned to Ottawa to protect his
country's interests. For eleven years the resourceful Mr. Hearne hurdled the baa.. ardous obstacles of diplomacy and cemented the bonds of international co-operation.
In 1937, when the Irish Free State was resolved to draft a constitution com-
mensurate with its maturity, Mr. Hearne again responded to the call of duty.
Through his profound experience and wisdom in the law, he helped frame this
constitution for Ireland, a nation for which so many of us here cherish a spiritual
and cultural bond of kinship. Alluding to the liberality of this document Mr. .
Hearne has pronounced it "the most comprehensive code of Christian democratic
social doctrines and principles ever enacted in a national constitution."
Therefore, as a £mng recognition of all these atr2inmtntl and achievements,
Seattle University is proud to bestow upon The Honorable John Joseph Hearne
- the seal of its sincerest approval - the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honcris Causa.
