Pax,

Rev. Michal Lewon Pastor

The Desert... The first time I saw a desert was during the winter of 2005. I went to Tucson, Arizona for Christmas. This was an unbelievable experience for someone from the Northern Hemisphere to experience sun and such warm weather during the winter. Shortly after, I spent the winter of 2006/2007 in Israel and was there for almost three months. In the fall of 2013, I went back to Israel again. For the last few years I have visited Arizona for a week or two but have not had the opportunity to go this year. I find the desert to be a spiritual place. Each time I am in the desert I think about the description of Jesus spending 40 days in the desert. I also think about the 40 years when the Jewish people wandered through the desert be-tween Egypt and the Promised Land. The desert in not dead. There might not be too much water but there is plenty of life. The life in the desert is more visible at night. But also, after the rainy season, the desert of the Holy Land and Arizona blooms with various flowers and colors. It can be a great piece of natural art. Not the last time but the time before, I was blessed to experience the blooming desert of Arizona. For the next 40 days, I am being called to allow God to take me to the desert of my own life. God calls me to slow down, to look at my heart, to look at my temptations, to look at my trust in Him. I will challenge myself to spend time in front of the Divine Mercy image and meditate: "Jesus, I trust in you."

Tuesday, February 20th - Saints Jacinta (d. 1920) and Francisco (d. 1919) Marto

"Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, three Portuguese shepherd chil-dren from Aljustrel, received apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria, near Fátima, a city 110 miles north of Lisbon. At that time, Europe was involved in an extremely bloody war. Portugal itself was in political tur-moil, having overthrown its monarchy in 1910; the government disbanded religious organizations soon after... Less than two years later, Francisco died of influenza in his family home. He was buried in the parish ceme-tery and then re-buried in the Fátima basilica in 1952. Jacinta died of in-fluenza in Lisbon in 1920, offering her suffering for the conversion of sin-ners, peace in the world, and the Holy Father. She was re-buried in the Fátima basilica in 1951." Wednesday, February 21st - St. Peter Damian - d. 1072 "Peter escaped poverty and neglect of his own brother when his other brother, who was archpriest of Ravenna, took him under his wing. His brother sent him to good schools and Peter became a professor... Soon, he decided to leave his teaching and give himself completely to prayer with the Benedictines of the reform of Saint Romuald at Fonte Avellana... The abbot commanded that when he died Peter should succeed him. Abbot Peter founded five other hermitages... Finally, Pope Stephen IX made Pe-ter the cardinal-bishop of Ostia. He worked hard to wipe out simony–the buying of church offices–and encouraged his priests to observe celibacy and urged even the diocesan clergy to live together and maintain sched-uled prayer and religious observance. He wished to restore primitive dis-cipline among religious and priests, warning against needless travel, vio-lations of poverty, and too comfortable living... In 1828, he was declared a Doctor of the Church."

Thursday, February 22nd - Chair of St. Peter "Like the committee chair, this chair refers to the occupant, not the furni-ture. Its first occupant stumbled a bit, denying Jesus three times and hesi-tating to welcome gentiles into the new Church. Some of its later occu-pants have also stumbled a bit, sometimes even failed scandalously. As individuals, we may sometimes think a particular pope has let us down. Still, the office endures as a sign of the long tradition we cherish and as a focus for the universal Church."

Friday, February 23rd - St. Polycarp - d. 155 “Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, disciple of Saint John the Apostle and friend of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, was a revered Christian leader during the first half of the second century... The Asia Minor Churches recognized Polycarp’s leadership by choosing him as a representative to discuss with Pope Anicetus the date of the Easter celebration in Rome—a major con-troversy in the early Church... At 86, Polycarp was led into the crowded Smyrna stadium to be burned alive. The flames did not harm him and he was finally killed by a dagger. The centurion ordered the saint’s body burned. The “Acts” of Polycarp’s martyrdom are the earliest preserved, fully reliable account of a Christian martyr’s death.”

Update St. Colette’s Grouping Feedback and Discernment Team (GFDT) members met again with our fellow parishes on Monday, February 12th. In preparation for that meeting, we were asked to consider our parish’s strengths and opportunities for improvement. Each parish shared their considerations first with their own team and then with each other. We then moved on to consider what strengths and opportunities best reflect the grouping as a whole. In addition, we reviewed the goals and process for our upcoming parish conversation scheduled for Monday, February 19th at 7pm. Our next group meeting is scheduled for March 12th. We invite you to join us for this scheduled informational/feedback meeting Monday February 19 at 7pm in Halpin Hall for English speakers. Your presence will help strengthen us throughout the upcoming aspects of the Renew My Church project.

Welcome to Online Giving!

Introducing...GiveCentral!

St. Colette Parish has begun accepting online donations through GiveCentral, our new online

donation service. GiveCentral is a safe, secure, and paperless way to make your Sunday offertory and

other contributions.

It was designed specifically for Catholic churches and schools in the Chicago area, and many other par-ishes in our Diocese have already found success with

it. The site allows you to make a one time or auto-matically repeating payments on a schedule that

works best for you, using any credit card, debit card or electronic bank account.

We believe that having a flexible online giving option will make it easier for many of you

to support St. Colette. Visit our website at www.stcolette.org and click on

the “GiveCentral” link or go to www.GiveCentral.org

and take a couple minutes to set up your donations. Questions? Please call the Parish Office
