MASSES
Dear Friends,
We are in a challenging me as the coronavirus has set foot on our soil and there is an air of uncertainty and fear. As Catholics, we are a people who trust in God and his ability to contain disease and calm our fears. First, I invite you to pray every day for our country and our world in this
me of crisis. The Italian newspaper Il Messagerro has reported that the 83-year-old Holy Father has tested nega ve for the illness that is sweeping through Italy right now. He has been ill for a few days now.
As a priest for nearly 30 years, I have never encountered something like this, and so it is new for me as well. These are some of the measures that we announced at all the masses last Sunday: 1. Already some weeks ago we stopped offering the Cup at Com-munion me. We will offer the Cup again when it is seems wise to do so. 2. We encour-age you not to hold hands during the “Our Father” and at the Sign of Peace, not to shake hands, but simply turn to your neighbor and say: Shalom, peace. 3. There will be no Holy Water in the ves bule for the foreseeable future as so many hands go into that water. 4. Most importantly, if you are sick- cold, cough, flu- PLEASE stay home and take care of yourself. Come back to Church when you are well.
I am more than happy to work with any of you who have recommenda ons for our community at this me. The coronavirus is not an equal-opportunity killer: Being elderly and having other illnesses, for instance, greatly increases the risk of dying from the dis-ease the virus causes, Covid-19. The World Health Organiza on mission to China found that 78% of the cases reported as of Feb. 20 were in people ages 30 to 69. The death toll skews the old even more strongly. Overall, China CDC found, 2.3% of confirmed cases died. But the fatality rate was 14.8% in people 80 or older, likely reflec ng the presence of other diseases, a weaker immune system, or simply worse overall health. By contrast, the fatality rate was 1.3% in 50-somethings, 0.4% in 40-somethings, and 0.2% in people 10 to 39. I would like to share a prayer taken from America Magazine:
Fr. Paulson
Second Sunday of Lent March 8, 2020 First Reading: Genesis 12:1-4
The first 11 chapters of Genesis are referred to as pre-history be-cause they teach truths in parable form. Today we begin the 12th chapter which contains stories with identifiable historical roots. The first of these is the call of Abraham, whose original name was Abram.
Second Reading: 2 Timothy 1:8-10
The second letter to Timothy, alt-hough probably written some 30 years after Paul’s death, was writ-ten in his name. This was an ac-ceptable practice at that time. The author, writing as Paul would write if he were alive, encourages the readers in the face of trials.

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your heal-ing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents na ons from working together and neighbors from helping one another.
Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.
Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this me of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace.
Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protec on and peace.
Be with the leaders of all na ons. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solu ons that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth. Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace.
Jesus Christ, heal us.
