COVER STORY The KMA GUIDEThe pretty young miss adorning our Febru-ary Valentine cover is Sharon Roulstone,daughter of your KMA morning announcer,Merle Douglas. Sharon is the eldest ofMerle's two girls. She is a Junior in highschool and still "sweet sixteen", howevershe has a birthday coming March 23rd. Wewanted to gather together materials for apretty "live Valentine" for you this month.We thought Sharon is just about as prettyan example as you could find for such apicture, and it's been some time since wehave had a picture of her in the Guide. Bill'sFloral Shop had just the right props forthe picture and most graciously offeredtheir facilities and a helping hand to bringyou the finished product. So, let this be ourspecial pretty Valentine to all our KMAGuide readers.

Meet the newest addition to our KMAfamily. Jim Ross, wife Barbara, and Terri,21/2 year old daughter are pictured in theirlovely new apartment. Jim is your musicalhost every weekday afternoon from 1:00till 4:00. Jim and Barbara are natives ofKMA-land. Jim's folks still reside nearFarragut, Iowa. Barbara is from NebraskaCity. As a young couple they share manyinterests. Together they assembled a high-fidelity stereophonic music system which isone of the finest we've heard. Usually thelady of the house doesn't share the hus-band's appreciation for booming woofersand ear -piercing tweeters. Also you wouldthink that after a shift over "hot turn-tables" all afternoon at the studios Jim

would seek other diversion than listeningto music at home. Jim says, "Barbara andI enjoy music so much we seldom turn onT.V. except for children's programs forTerri". Jim and Barbara are both goodshots with hand guns. When Jim served onthe police force in Tulsa he collected abeautiful Smith .357 Magnum, an H & R.22 and a Colt .25. Jim likes photography,owns a good camera and hopes to set upa darkroom. Among his newest interests isham radio operating. Here again Barbarashares an equal, if not greater interest.Both plan to get licenses. This sharing ofmutual interests will give you some insightinto this fine young family, a fine newcomplement to our KMA staff.
The KMA Guide
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, "Mu-sic is the universal language of mankind."I believe this is true, for all of us likemusic. We may not all prefer exactly thesame kind, which is probably a good thing.However, we all like either popular, clas-sical, country and western, polkas, religiousor one or more of the hundreds of kinds ofmusic heard throughout the world.
If you like music, which I am sure youdo, then you surely enjoy listening to KMAfor we have wonderful music on KMA.Much of it would fall into the category ofpopular music, but we do have manyspecialized programs featuring certaintypes of music. For example, we have somefine classical programs on Sunday, countryand western music on Saturday nights, folksongs, Broadway musicals and jazz atspecified times on Saturday afternoons.These are just a few of the fine musicalprograms heard either daily or weekly onthe station. All of these are to be found inthe daily program schedule to be found ineach and every issue of the KMA GUIDE.
One of the groups that has a good timehas been referred to as the "Music Muti-lators." Part of the group is shown in thepicture on this page. Those in the pic-ture are Bob Morrison, manager of thelocal Hy-Vee store, playing the "fiddle"(Bob also does a fine job of playing theelectric guitar ), DennisBoldra, a barber, on themandolin (Dennis also playsa tenor banjo), Chuck Bunn,sales manager of KMA, onthe guitar, and yours trulyon the plectrum banjo. Wehave met about four dif-ferent times, and the numberof "musicians" present hasvaried from about four to asmany as eight. We don'tmake any claims for thequality of music, but we surehave a good time. If wepractice enough maybe wecan do a number or twosometime on KMA. As manyof ycu know, we used to havelots of live talent on KMA,but we have had very littlesince the advent of televi-sion. However, we do have

some wonderful music on KMA and, likeLongfellow said, "Music is the universallanguage of mankind."
At our house, Eddie is most anxious forwarmer weather to arrive. He wants allthe ice and snow to melt from the streetsso he can once again ride his bicycle toschool.
Annette has been busy at school di-recting a one -act play. By the time thisissue of the Guide goes to press, the playwill have been performed. She says work-ing it up, selecting the sound effects andthe many things that go into directing agroup of fellow students has been fun, edu-cational and a lot of hard work.
Karen seems to be taking school as itcomes. She is real good about doing herstudying. She seems to be happy the firstsemester is behind her and now she is head-ing down the home stretch of the eighthgrade.
I believe school is more difficult todaythan when I was a student. It seems tome the assignments are longer and hardertoday. From all indications, this is a signof the times and schools will probably con-tinue to be harder.
Personally, I am glad I don't have to goto school anymore, but we all continue tolearn through experience. We also learnthings by listening to the radio, so keepyour dial set on 960-KMA.
Morrison, Dennis Boldra, and Chuck Bunnget together just for "kicks" . . . sound real good.

The picture this month was taken onthe afternoon of January 25, right afterthree successive days with temperaturesup into the 40's. You are looking eastacross the south side of our yard and thesnow drift running across the center ofthe picture was still about 5 ft. high theday this picture was taken . . . even afterthree days of warm weather, so you caneasily imagine the size of this drift rightafter the big blizzard three days beforeChristmas. It was actually about 10 feetdeep with the top of it about even withthe lower edge of the window you see onthe left side of the picture. At the otherend, the drift was just up into the lowerlimbs of that Pin Oak tree.
Our vegetable garden is just down overthe hill at the right of the Pin Oak andit still has a blanket of snow over a footdeep with a big drift across the center,now down to about 3 feet deep from anestimated six or eight feet before theJanuary thaw set in.
The surprising thing is that the groundis not frozen under this snow and in spotswhere the snow has melted away enoughto expose the lawn, the grass is about asgreen now as it was in mid -summer. All ofwhich means there isn't very much danger
of a serious drouth this summer since allthis moisture will soak in as it melts andwill not run off and be lost as would be thecase if the ground were frozen solidlyunderneath. In other words, we will haveenough sub -soil moisture to make a goodcrop of just about everything this comingsummer, even if rainfall is much belownormal.
After taking a long, hard look at ourdwindling supplies of canned and frozenvegetables in the basement, Jennie and Ihave decided that this coming year, wewill have to about double our tomatoacreage and at least double the sourceof supply for the pickled beets Which aredown now to less than a dozen pint jars.Everything else is going to come out abouteven. The peas will be strictly DwarfEarly Giant (the old Giant Progress). Thebeets will be Ruby Queen and Baby Can-ning; the beans mostly Contender with afew Top Crop; the potatoes all Kennebecand the tomatoes mostly Surprise and TomBoy with a few plants of Roma. The TomBoy Tomato has not yet been introducedas we didn't have enough seed for thisyear-we'll tell you more about it thissummer and fall. The tomatoes will beplanted three feet apart in rows three feetapart and each one will be trained up toa stake six feet high. I staked part pfthem last year and the results were somuch better that this year they will all bestaked-even the Romas.

The Trinity Lutheran Churchin Shenandoah now boasts ajunior choir. The director isnone other than our oldmaestro of "Mike's Matinee"(4:00 PM daily), Mike Heuer.This picture was snapped attheir first Saturday after-noon practice session in thechurch unde r cr o f t. Mikeplans to induce more young-sters to join his fine groupof young singers and build afull children's choir. Mrs.Charles Tompkins is accomp-anying at the piano. Mikeaccepted this new task en-thusiastically. Let's hope thechildren and their new choirdirector fulfill all the plansMike has for them.
Here is Bruce Falk with one of a numberof raccoons he's trapped on the creek whichruns by the Falk Farm. In fact Florenceoverlooks this same creek out her windowas she does her daily broadcast 10:30-11:00each morning. Bruce has trapped fiftysome muskrats, two minks, two skunks inaddition to the coons. He has netted about$50.00 so far which goes right to the bankfor college.
Barbara Andersen, six year old daughterof KMA account executive and sporiscasterAndy Andersen, displays a talent which issomewhat amazing. Barbara can "walk"up a doorway and hang from the top frameso easily you have to blink twice to makesure your eyes aren't playing tricks. Bar-bara is a kindergartner and the youngestof Andy's three children. We suggest otheryoungsters not try this particular trick . . .

HOUSEHOLD HINTSTO REMOVE MILDEW
Moisten the spot with clean water, rubon it a thick coating of castile soap, mixedwith chalk scrapings. Rub with end offinger, then wash off.TO REMOVE BAKED FISH FROM PANA strip of cheese cloth, greased and putacross the bottom of the pan in which fishis to be baked, makes it easy to removefish without breaking. The ends of the stripmust extend beyond the fish.
TO PREVENT MEAT BALLS FROMBECOMING HARD
A pinch of baking powder added to themeat ball mixture will prevent the outsidefrom becoming hard.
TO REMOVE VEGETABLE STAINSRub fingers with a slice of raw potato.
TO SLICE FRESH BREADPlace bread in refrigerator until thoroughlychilled, then it will slice easily.
TO CLEAN SILVERImmerse in one gallon of hot water, towhich add 1 tablespoon of table salt and 1teaspoon of soda. Rinse in clear water anddry.
TO CLEAN BRASSMix lemon juice and salt to a paste, userind of lemon to rub the brass with. Forvery bad stain, cover with the paste and letstand for several hours.
KMA To Follow Tournaments To FinalsFebruary 13 is the opening date for thebeginning of basketball tournament sea-son broadcasts on KMA. Here your KMAveteran sportscasters Andy Andersen andDean Naven who, by the way, have atotal of seventeen years following Iowatournament play, are shown with the re-mote equipment they will carry some 1,500

or more miles to tournament sites by thetime they reach the state finals in Water-loo. Andy and Dean will bring you the toptournament play in both Boys' and Girls'games starting with girls' sectional tourna-ments in southwest Iowa. At this time ofyear the weather plays an important rolein tournament play; however, unless travel
is impossible games will goon as scheduled. Your veteransportscasters have foughtblizzards, drifted highways,and even become stranded tobring tournament action tosports fans who are unableto attend the games. Basket-ball enthusiasm, which isamong the keenest of com-petitive sports in the area,reaches an almost feverishpitch when tournaments getunder way. Many times theconference giants fall bythe wayside in early action.Favorites topple, unheraldeddarkhorse teams fight theirway to the top. The gamesare full of thrills. Fans al-most burst with joy as thefinal buzzer signals a win,or in contrast, shed tearsfreely when their team losesby a scant few points aftera hard-fought game. Here isthrilling rivalry in whichevery s c h o of participates.Andy will bring you the play-by-play action; Dean willbring you all the color of thecrowd, making a perfectsportscasting team for thecoming '62 season.

Julie JosephsonWins V.O.D. ContestThe lovely young lady at right is JulieJosephson, daughter of KMA engineer, JackJosephson. Julie was the winner of theShenandoah High School 15th Annual Voiceof Democracy speech contest. Julie is aJunior, and one of four finalists enteredfrom Shenandoah. Her taped speech wasforwarded to Des Moines for entry in thestate finals, where unfortunately she didnot win, however, still a great honor. Julie'swin was a surprise to the KMA staff be-cause the four entrant's tapes were judgedright at the KMA studios and her identityand that of the other three contestants wasunknown until after she was picked as thewinner. Each taped speech was identifiedby number only. Our sincere congratula-tions to Julie and particular thanks to eachstudent who entered the contest. All ofthe contestants had excellent scripts, thebest to date, requiring several reruns forthe judges to finally select one on hairlinemerits. The subject this year was "WhatFreedom Means To Me." The Veterans ofForeign Wars sponsors this annual "Voiceof Democracy" speech contest on a nation-wide basis. State winners are taken on anall -expense tour of the nation's capitol.
Scholarships up to $1,500 for first place goto the naticnal winners.
"Checker Of The Year" Visits The Farmer's WifePictured below is Mrs. Donna Welcher(left) of Osceola, Iowa who has the greathonor of being chosen from grocery check-ers across the nation as "InternationalChecker Queen for 1961". Mrs. Welcher isshown chatting with Florence Falk "TheFarmer's Wife" at the KMA office. Flor-ence had a very interesting interview withMrs. Welcher for one of her daily programs.In addition to continuing her work as achecker at the Osceola Hy-Vee Food Store,Mrs. Welcher has had a busy year makingappearances and speeches allover the country. Supermar-ket chain stores throughoutthe states select their out-standing checker from letterswritten by customers. Win-ners are selected at districtretail grocers' meetings; thenthe final winner is picked atthe national convention inChicago. So you see, it is in-deed a great honor for Mrs.Welcher, and we might add,also an honor to have thewinner chosen from a com-munity in the KMA listeningarea. Hy-Vee Food Storesshould be proud also to havethe queen chosen from one

of their stores. Mrs. Welcher was on atour of Hy-Vee Stores while visiting KMA.In fact, after leaving the KMA offices shevisited with all the employees at the Shen-andoah Hy-Vee store and even spent sometime at one of the check stands waiting oncustomers. Mrs. Welcher has three children.The grand prize was an enjoyable twoweeks' vacation in Hawaii for she and herhusband.

Newscaster Ralph Childs was fortunatein two ways on January 16th, the day hisRecord Shop and adjoining Page Theaterin Shenandoah, were practically destroyedby fire. He was fortunate in that elevenyoung men, realizing the seriousness ofthe fire, quickly carried out the stock, tak-ing it to nearby stores for safety. He wasalso fortunate in that he had just invoicedthat day, which aided in the settlement ofthe insurance. Around three thousand al-bums and one thousand 45's were in thestore, at the time the fire broke out inthe projection room of the theater. Theflames quickly spread throughout the entirebuilding. After gathering up his recordsfrom many different places, Ralph and hiswife, Muriel, reopened their shop next tothe Safeway store in Shenandoah, within afew days. Ralph was deeply grateful to theyoung men who came to his aid that night.Jim Ross, one of KMA's newest announcers,happened to be among those who bravedthe extreme cold weather, and helped Ralphsave his stock.

Although newscaster Ralph Childs andwife, Muriel, were able to reopen theirrecord shop within a few days after theirfire, they still have many things to do.New fixtures have been ordered and theyplan to expand their shop. Here they arestanding behind a record rack they hadjust filled with the latest records, includingthe teenager favorite: "Doin' The Twist"recorded by the stars from the PeppermintLounge in New York where the twistdance originated.
Red spots on the hand and arm of Mrs.Farrell Turnbull, KMA's Traffic manager,are reminders of the burns she received re-cently when hot grease popped out of theskillet while she was frying steak. Theaccident was caused when she accidentallydropped her fork in the hot fat.
Eddie May, Jr. was quite impressed whenhe saw his daddy and his uncle J. D.Rankin, Jr. on KMTV the night of theAwards Dinner honoring the outstandingcitizen of Omaha during the past year.Upon arrival home little Eddie said: "Isaw you on television last night, Dad. Areyou President of the May Seed Company?""Yes", replied his dad. To this, Eddiereplied: "I thought that was what theysaid. And is Uncle J. D. Vice President?"Upon receiving another affirmative answerlittle Eddie said: "Well, we had a Presidentand Vice President of our club one time,until somebody came along and took theclub away."
Visions of a nice warm home awaitingher, went thru the mind of Joyce Dober-necker of the KMA Continuity department,as she drove home from the office throughthe terrible snow storm at dusk on theFriday preceding Christmas. The wind wasblowing 50 miles an hour and the air wasfilled with frozen pellets of ice and snow.Opening the front door, Joyce and hermother who had been downtown shoppingall afternoon, realized something waswrong. Quickly they investigated, to findthe wind had blown the back door open andsnow had blown all over the kitchen floor.The temperature in the house was downto 43 degrees. What a cold reception! Theysoon had the door shut and the thermostaton the furnace turned up, but it took quitea long time to get the house cozy andwarm, because of the blizzard outside. Betnext time the back door will be lockedwhen it's stormy!

I wouldn't be too amazed to see Carole,daughter of Chief Engineer Don Burrichter,sprouting wings any day now. She canmake sounds like birds that sound betterthan many birds I've heard. Carole is aJunior in High School, and her Freshmansister Connie is now a Cheer Leader forthe reserve basketball team. Their brotherEd who is studying pharmacy at the Uni-versity of Kansas was home for a few daysvacation at the end of the first semester.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Rankin, Jr., enjoyeda winter vacation in Mexico City and Acu-pulco, Mexico the early part of this month.
Visiting with the KMA engineers hadgiven GUIDE EDITOR DUANE MODROWthe fever to get into ham radio. NormKling had been helping Duane a lot, untilhe had become exceedingly interested. Sud-denly, he got a chance to buy a completeham rig from a local operator. NOW . . .
DUANE sits with a big beautiful ham rig,and he can't operate it, because he doesn'thave his license. But you can bet Duanewill be going to Kansas City as soon aspossible to take his test. Even after hepasses his test, it will be several weeksbefore he can get his license, so he isgoing to have some anxious moments ahead,waiting to get on the air. But what funDuane is going to have eventually visitingwith ham operators all over the world!
Playing a guitar is a lot of fun forKMA'e Sales Manager Charles Bunn, butit isn't so much fun later when big blistersappear on his fingers. That's what happenedrecently when he got out his guitar andjoined a group that played at the OldTimers dance given by the PAIRS &SQUARES CLUB. Edward May played theplectrum banjo, Dennis Boldra played atenor banjo, Robert Morrison the fiddle,and Chuck the guitar, with Mrs. PatsyZuck on piano. They were an instant hitand played for several dances. Everyonehad fun . . . but oh, my, those sore fingersafterwards!
The HAND HOSPITAL thought they hadlost a patient one day when the nursewalked into the room of Elmer Lightfoot,father of KMA ANNOUNCER JIM ROSS,and found he was not there. But a quicksearch located him in the room next door,visiting with his uncle Mac Lightfoot whowas also a patient in the hospital. As longas they had to be in the hospital, it wasgood they could be next door to eachother, so they could have an occasionalchat together. Besides visiting his rel-atives in the hospital, Jim's spare timehas been spent refinishing furniture re-cently. An old radio and stereo system Jimbuilt, was given a fresh stain job.
A Japanese motif will be carried out inthe birthday party of Holly, daughter ofMr. and Mrs. Warren Nielson, who willbe eight years old February 20th. Eightlittle girls will enjoy a Japanese tea party

honoring the event. Next month we willshow you a picture of Holly in her Japa-nese robe and sandals, entertaining herguests.
Life is never monotonous on the farm.There's always something happening, likewhen a fine baby heifer was born at noonon January 17th at the Byron Falk farmright when the temperature in the barnregistered zero. Had the Falks been awayfrom home at the time of the calf's arrival,in all probability, it would have frozen todeath. However, Byron checked to see ifeverything was all right with "Princess"before he left for town. He never made thetrip, because very shortly "Princess" gavebirth to a fine big 861/2 pound baby heifer.Immediately, the new calf took up herabode in the glassed back porch "of theFalk farm home where it was around 40degrees. To take the calf back and forthto her mother in the barn, Byron put thelawn cart into use, and the family wentalong to hold the ears and tail of the calf,so they would not freeze. About a weeklater the new arrival was strong enough tojoin her mother in the barn, and starteating from a bucket by herself. The 4-HClub member of the family, Bruce, was de-lighted with the new heifer, as the calf'smother "Princess" is Bruce's 4-'H project.

A Letter From Bernice CurrierDear Homemakers and Friends:
I am sitting in my kitchen by the eastwindow where I can look out over MerleDouglas' back yard and see nothing buta wide expanse of snow, snow, and moresnow. There are drifts out here that are3 and 4 ft. high. And it is snowing so hardright now that visibility is Zero. It's a goodday to write letters and I moved out hereso I could also take care of the FruityBuns I am making. The recipe is on theopposite page. Hope you will try them.When they come out of the oven all goldenbrown, I will have a cup of coffee and agenerous sample of the buns while theyare hot and the butter melts right downinto them. (There will probably be a spotof butter on this copy when I send it downto Duane Modrow, our GUIDE editor).
Since I wrote to you last there has beenThanksgiving, cleaning house, having win-dows washed, draperies at the cleaners,polishing silver, cleaning the china cabinet,rush to get the Christmas recipes and di-rections for making nylon trees andwreaths, etc., and the bells made of cantops and bottoms, all mimeographed andsent out to you friends.
Then the real rush began of shoppingfor gifts for the 25 family and friends onmy list. Everyone was in a real dither doingthe same thing and wasn't it fun?
One store here got the cards mixed onthe packages I sent to Pat in Houston,Texas and to Karen in Cairo, Illinois. Theyare about the same age and I had gottenhalf-slips for each. Pat is a brunette sohers was a medley of autumn coloring.Karen is blond and hers was a rainbow ofpastel shades. The girls didn't say a wordabout it when they wrote thanking me forthem, but when Red was here a week orso ago he told me but he said they werefine and the girls were very happy aboutthe whole thing.
Red came unexpectedly one morningshortly after I was off the air at 9:00. Heand Blaine Baker, Production Manager atKFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, Missouri,were in Omaha on business and Blaine hadto go on to Des Moines so he dropped Redoff here and went on. Then picked him upagain on his return. So we had a couple ofhours visit, coffee and turkey sandwiches.
A blizzard and high wind hit us comingfrom Missouri and Kansas, shortly afterRed and Blaine left here but they gotback to Cape Girardeau safely by 2:30 or3:00, leaving here around noon.
I enjoyed having Elizabeth, my sister,here for Christmas. She is a perfect guest.but she isn't a guest when she comes here.
She is as much at home in this house as Iam. She washes the dishes, does all thedusting, and visits with my Homemakersvia radio. She has such a variety of inter-ests that it keeps me hopping to learnabout all of her activities. While she wasin Boston in November visiting her daugh-ter Ruth, and family, at Needham, Mas-sachusetts, she had my Christmas presentsent from there. It is a perfectly beautifulItalian Coffee Pot. Made in Italy, it is anoff-white pottery with a gorgeous floraldesign and a very ornate handle. We wereonly outside the house once while she washere. Just one blizzard after another keptus from even having any company.
I had such a good letter from my son,Ed, San Rafael, California. With his senseof humor, his down-to-earthness, and hisgift of saying the right thing at the righttime, he really should have been a writer.They have three girls and the two olderones each broke an arm within a week ofeach other and the youngest one had a cor-rective operation on one eye and now hasglasses. So their mother, Patti has hadquite a hospital to run. Besides beingmother, wife, homemaker, housekeeper,cook and dish washer, nurse, doctor, chauf-fer, and entertainer. Poor Patti!! But sheis equal to it. She is very capable andunderstanding.
A letter from Helen, Houston, Texas,tells of the activities of her family of fivechildren. Pat, the oldest girl was homefrom Vanderbilt University for Christmas.It was the first time she had been homesince she left in September and I canimagine how thrilled everyone was to seeher. A note from David told about the newJunior High School being built near themand now he can ride his bicycle instead oftaking a bus. He will like that. Alan isgrowing so fast. He bought an art set withthe money I sent him for Christmas.
Johnny is a young man of 16 years now,and Kathie a sweet little girl of 6 years.Margaret and Al, my New York family,sent me a lovely scarf or stole from Bloom-ingdale's in London. It is made of finemohair thread woven in a lacy design withscalloped edge. The color is a luscious roseand I love it. I wore it over my head andaround my neck when I went to the BeautyParlor the other day and the women in theshop were ecstatic about it so I was veryproud. My time and space are both runningshort so maybe I better save the rest totalk about tomorrow morning at 8:30 onthe air.

Hard cook the eggs, shell them, cut inhalf lengthwise, then mix (the yolks) withdash of salt and mayonnaise. Mash themwell with a fork and put back into thewhites. Dissolve gelatin in the hot water;add cold water, salt and vinegar. Pour a1/4 inch layer into a square pan and chill toquivery. Press olive slices into the egghalves and place the eggs, deviled sidedown in bottom of pan. Mix remaining in-gredients with remaining gelatin and pourit over the egg halves. Chill till firm. Un-mold on serving platter.

POTATO REFRIGERATOR ROLLSA-11/2 c. warm water
1 or 2 pkgs. dry yeastB- % c. sugar
11/2 t. salt% c. soft shortening
2 eggs1 c. lukewarm mashed potatoesC- 7 to 71/2 c. sifted flour
Dissolve "A" in mixing bowl, stir in "B"and beat well; mix in "C" to make dougheasy to knead. Put out on floured board andknead until smooth and elastic. Place ingreased bowl, cover (do not use waxedpaper) with damp cloth; place in refriger-ator. Punch down as necessary. When readyto use, let warm to room temperature aboutan hour then make into any rolls desired,put in greased pan, cover, let rise to doublethen bake about 15 min. at 375°. Makesabout 4 dozen.

CHOCOLATE SANDWICH DESSERT11 oz. Oreo Cookies crushed fine, filling
and all.Put 1 c. of this in an 8 by 12 buttered
pan. Soak 1 envelope plain gelatin in % c.cold water. Beat 3 egg yolks in top of
Odouble boiler. Beat in % c. sugar and 1 c.milk. Cook over boiling water until itcoats a clean spoon. Add the gelatin. Re-move from fire and cool. When beginningto thicken, fold in:
1 c. cream whipped

Dissolve "A" in large mixing bowl, stirin "B" and beat well. Mix in "C". Knead onfloured board till smooth. Put in greasedbowl, cover with warm damp cloth andlet rise to double. Punch down, cover, letrest 15 minutes. Put out on board and cutoff with scissors or knife or pinch off intoabout 28 to 30 balls. Make a deep dentin top of each and fill with 1 t. of candiedfruit. Pinch dough together over the topto seal. Roll in melted butter, then in sugarand pecans or use cinnamon instead ofpecans. Place sealed side down in 2 greased8 inch square pans, close together. Cover,let rise to double, bake about 25 minutes at375°.

and reserve the juice11/2 c. cooked rice
1 c. diced celery1/2 c. diced green onions or minced
onion1/2 c. chopped sweet pickle1/2 c. chili sauce2 t. horseradish
salt to tasteDrain the beans and save the liquid. Com-
bine all ingredients and mix well. Add justenough of the bean liquid to make desiredconsistency. Makes 6 servings.

ONION PIE1 quart onions, thinly sliced
% t. salt1/2 lb. American Cheese1/2 t. pepper4 T. milk
Pastry for a 2 -crust pieLine the deep pie dish with rich pastry.
Fill with alternate layers of sliced onionsand thinly sliced cheese, seasoning eachlayer of onions with salt and pepper. Pourthe milk over all. Place the pastry coverover the top and crimp the edge. Slash ina few places for the escape of steam. Bakethis in a hot oven 400° for 40 to 45 min.
Serve hot with hamburger, meat loaf orwith cold cuts; or with mixed green saladand hot fish loaf. 6 servings.

FISH IN SOUR CREAM3 lbs. fish fillets2 T. flour4 T. butter1 c. sour cream2 T. bread crumbs
saltRub fish fillets with salt, roll in flour
and fry in the butter. Turn to brown thefish on all sides. Lay pieces or fillets ingreased casserole; pour the sour cream overthe fillets, sprinkle with the crumbs andseason with a very little salt. Set in a hotoven 400° for 10 to 15 minutes or until thetop is browned. This makes 10 to 12 serv-ings. An easy recipe to double for a largegroup. Try it!

MOLASSES APPLE SCALLOP3 large tart cooking apples1 T. ground cinnamon4 T. granulated sugar4 T. table molasses
1/2 c. toasted cake or cooky crumbs1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour74 t. salt6 T. butter
Peel and slice the apples. Arrange themin a buttered casserole. Pour the molassesover them, and dot with one tablespoon ofthe butter. Cream the remaining five table-
spoons of butter with the sugar. Stir intothis the flour, salt, cinnamon, and crumbsand mix well. Spread this over the apples.
Bake this covered in a moderate oven350° for thirty minutes. Remove the coverand bake 15 minutes longer. Serve hot withcream. This makes 4 to 6 servings.

NOODLES WITH CHICKEN LIVERS6 chicken livers4 T. chicken fat4 medium onions, chopped
Salt and pepper2 five -oz. pkgs. wide noodles
Cook the noodles in boiling salted wateruntil they are tender. Cook the onionsslowly in the hot chicken fat for 5 minutes.Add the chopped liver and continue cookingtill the onions are tender and livers arecooked. Season. Drain noodles, combinewith onion and livers. 8 servings.

11/2 t. saltDash pepper
6 T. sweet pickle liquid or liquid fromcrab apples, any sweet pickles
11/2 c. bread crumbs or cereal flakesOnion to taste, if desired
1 egg, well beatenCombine all ingredients and shape into
eight small patties or loaves. Pan-fry slowlyin hot fat. Makes four generous servings,two patties to a serving.

RICH CHOCOLATE JUMBLES
1 egg, beaten3 T. thick cream, either sweet or sour1 c. shortening1 c. sugar2 squares (oz.) chocolate, melted
21/4 c. flour1/2 to % t. grated nutmeg
Beat the egg and cream together. Creamthe shortening and sugar, and stir in themelted chocolate. Add the egg mixture andflour to this alternately, then the nutmeg.The dough should be very soft. Chill dough.Then roll it, small part at a time, one-fourth inch thick. Cut with a doughnutcutter. Bake on a cooky sheet in a moderateoven 375° for about eight minutes. Makesabout 24 jumbles. Frost if you like to gildthe lily.

1 can (1 lb. 14 oz.) Fruit CocktailAbout 24 small vanilla wafers
4 T. cold water1 envelope (or T.) unflavored gelatin1 c. heavy cream2 t. sugar
1/2 t. vanillaDrain fruit cocktail thoroughly, setting
aside 1 c. for garnish. Fix wafers uprightaround the inside of an ungreased round8" layer cake pan, 11/2" deep. (If wafersstick up above the rim, trim them back)Soften the gelatin in the cold water, dis-solve over hot water. Whip the cream add-ing sugar and vanilla. Carefully fold inthe well -drained fruit, and softened gelatin.Spread quickly in cake pan; lay additionalwafers on top to cover, pressing downslightly. Chill. In freezing compartment itcould be left about 45 minutes. In coldestpart of refrigerator chill for at least anhour. Unmold. Garnish with fruit cocktail.Cut in 6 to 8 wedges.

1 t. vanillaMelt butter; add sugar and blend. Pack
on bottom of greased loaf pan. Removestems from figs, cut in half and arrangewith cherries on top of sugar mixture.Beat egg yolks until thick; add sugar andcontinue beating. Add fig juice. Sift flour,baking powder, and salt together. Foldinto egg -yolk mixture. Beat egg whites andvanilla stiff but not dry. Fold into cakemixture. Pour over figs and bake. Placein a cold oven. Turn oven to 350° andbake for 75 minutes.
12 frankfurters2 eighteen -inch pieces of string
c. French dressing4 c. stale bread crumbs
% t. saltdash pepper
t. poultry stuffing1 T. chopped parsley
1/2 c. orange juice1 egg, beaten
1/4 lb. sausage meat1/2 c. celery cut fine
String franks together on 2 eighteen inchpieces of string, so that curved sides are inone direction. Use one string 2 inches fromthe top of each frank and then the othertwo inches from the bottom of each frank.Lay flat in baking pan. Cover with Frenchdressing; turn once while preparing rest ofdressing. Toss together bread crumbs, salt,pepper, poultry seasonings and parsley.Combine orange juice and egg. Add tobread mixture and blend. Fry sausage meatuntil browned and crumbly. Drain off allbut 2 T. of sausage fat. Add with celery todressing. Remove frankfurters from Frenchdressing. Tie ends of string to form acrown. Pack dressing into hollow of crown.Place standing in 8 -inch baking pan. Bakein 350° oven for 45 minutes. Serve withyour favorite gelatin salad and cracked -wheat bread and a good cottage puddingfor a delightful meal.

Mix the sugar and nutmeg. Add vanillaand cream. Stir until sugar is dissolved.

Jack Gowing, KMA Farm Service Di-rector, was one of a group of U.S. radiofarm directors who attended a two-dayconference at the Cyanamid AgriculturalCenter in Princeton, New Jersey the week-end of January 20th. The broadcasterstoured the new Cyanamid AgriculturalCenter facilities where research on live-stock is being conducted. After the tour,there were conference sessions on the useof antibiotics in livestock feed, and in usingveterinary biologicals and pharmaceuticalsin maintaining healthy animals.
Winning 10,000 5 & H Green Stamps wasquite a thrill for Florence, wife of Pro-duction Mgr. Warren Nielson of KMA, ina contest she entered recently. Florence'scontest letter on "My Favorite Checker"sponsored by HY VEE, won first place.She also was second place winner in aslogan contest sponsored recently by theCity of Shenandoah.
During winter months a number of oc-casions arise when school children reflecteither happiness or gloom, and school su-perintendents are a little frustrated becauseschools must be closed because of theweather. Early morning finds school super-intendents with an ear to the weather fore-casters and one hand on the phone awaitingthe last crucial moment they may make adecision and still get it announced overKMA in time to reach their students. Oncethe decision is made they call KMA witha code identification for their particularschool. KMA has ninety such coded schools.If the code doesn't check, the superintend-ent or principal is called back immediatelyto confirm the announcement. Occasional-ly a wag attempts to close a school un-necessarily by phoning in an unauthorizedclosing announcement. The new code sys-tem is completely discouraging to suchpranksters. KMA has come to be the con-trol center of closing announcements (andreopenings too) over a wide area. The codesystem helps speed up the phone answer-ing and announcing system while alsoeliminating any need for duplication ofcalls.
At this writing the world is still awaitingthe day when Col. John H. Glenn, Jr. willbe launched into space as our first astro-naut to orbit the earth. There is the pos-sibility that he may make his historicalflight before your Guide reaches you. Inany event let us hope it is successful.Meanwhile K M A tentatively plans tocancel all regularly scheduled program-ming to bring you every detail of and aboutthis "Man In Orbit" until Col. Glenn's safereturn is assured. KMA will hook up withthe tremendous ABC Network news teamat Cape Canaveral. In addition to full cover -

My past experiencehas been that every dollar spent for ferti-lizer in the garden, brings about ten dollarsin extra yield, to say nothing of betterquality.
We plan on putting the tomatoes intothe garden about May 1 and covering eachone with a Hot Kap to protect them fromany possiblility of a late frost such as wehad last year and which, incidentally, camewhile our fruit trees were in full bloom sowe had practically no fruit at all except forsome Dwarf Polly Peaches which weretrained up against the side of the housewhere they escaped the frost.
Now take another look at that pictureand figure out if you can, how we can pos-sibly be making gardens in another eightweeks and picking ripe tomatoes in anothersixteen. Do you want to bet?
Are the markings on your measuring ruledimmed by time and use? You can restoretheir readability if you just dip a piece ofcloth in light-colored paint and wipe thescale with it. The punched -in marks andnumbers pick up paint but the rest of therule does not.
