50 YEARS OR ROTARY CELEBRATION
ForewordThe 50th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Lilydale’s service to the community is a momentous achievement and a significant milestone in any organisation, particularly a voluntary one. This historic milestone marks a half century of fellowship and service to our community, locally, nationally and internationally.
Our past and current members can be justifiably proud of their achievements, contributing to improving our community and society. It is through their dedication and commitment that the future of our Club and its direction has been set, and it is now up to our current and future members to maintain a healthy, active, vibrant and successful Club.
The Rotary Club of Lilydale shows leadership as it has demonstrated the capacity to adapt to a changing environment throughout its 50 years. Today’s Club has many challenges ahead, similar in magnitude and no more complicated than the challenges of our past members.
This book is a tribute to the many extraordinary, men and women who have given their time, talents and money to changing lives and building our community. It portrays the many outstanding projects, events and provides a fascinating insight into the nature of the Club over the years and how it has changed and adapted since its Charter in 1965.
So, why is this book important?
• It’s a wonderful and nostalgic trip down memory lane• It’s a source of ideas, interest and inspiration, and an appreciation of the achievements over the
last 50 years• It’s a unique insight into the activities of a significant contributor to service within the community• It’s an uplifting story of human interest, a story of dreams, of making a difference that turned to reality
with the help of like-minded people
A word of acknowledgement. This celebratory book could not have come into existence without the countless hours of voluntary effort collecting, collating, compiling, writing and editing. Our heartfelt thanks go to Ian Darvell, Michael Gavin, Lynn Whelan and Neville Lester, and many other members whose dedication to preserving the Club’s history would not have made this book possible.
We hope that you enjoy reading the history of the past 50 years of our great Club – The Rotary Club of Lilydale.

Paul Harris, Rotary Founder
6 Rotary Club of Lilydale 50 Years Anniversary
OVERVIEW OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
Rotary was founded by Paul Harris in 1905. A lawyer in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Harris was raised in a rural village in Vermont. He envisaged a new kind of club for professionals that would rekindle the fellowship he had known in his youth. Meetings were rotated among their places of business and so the name “Rotary” emerged and, so too, did the commitment to improve the lives of the less fortunate.
When this first Rotary Club of Chicago was formed, the Rotary commitment to service was born and Rotary became the world’s first Service Club organisation. By 1910, the International Association of Rotary Clubs was established (later renamed Rotary International).
In 1916, witnessing the growing popularity of the Clubs in various regions worldwide, Rotary set up a District system. The organisation became truly global — transcending national boundaries, race, language, and religion — as Clubs mushroomed throughout Europe, South and Central America, Australia, Africa, and Asia. Rotary was represented on six continents by 1921. To reflect this worldwide presence, the name Rotary International was adopted one year later.
Rotary is a worldwide organisation of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.3 million Rotarians belong to more than 34,000 Rotary Clubs located in 215 countries (more than the UN). Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community’s business and professional men and women. The world’s Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non-political, non-religious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.
The main objective of Rotary is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today’s most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.
7
Objects of RotaryThe Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular:FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
Five Avenues of ServiceWe channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity. On April 28th 2010, New Generations now known as Youth, was approved as the Fifth Avenue of Service. Based on the Object of Rotary, the Avenues of Service are Rotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.Youth Service, previously known as New Generations, recognises the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs.

CLUB AND DISTRICT ROTARY LINEAGEThe Rotary Club of Lilydale grew out of the Rotary Club of Melbourne, the first Rotary Club in Australia.RC Melbourne was chartered on April 21st 1921, and RC Sydney soon after. Initially as Rotary expanded worldwide, it was organised into eight geographic administrative divisions, which evolved into Districts, differentiated by a numerical designation with each District having a similar number of clubs.
In 1928, Australia became District 65. RC Melbourne soon after chartered 16 Clubs, including the Rotary Club of Hawthorn in 1953, which 3 years later in 1956, chartered the Rotary Club of Camberwell. Rotary Clubs, as a part of Rotary’s global restructuring, redistricting and global reallocation of Clubs, found their District Number change.
The Rotary Club of Camberwell, then in District 28, sponsored the Rotary Club of Lilydale in 1965, with the District being renamed in 1957 as District 280. In 1965 the Rotary Club of Lilydale was in District 280, and in 1977, as part of a global reallocation, the District was renamed District 980, and then with other Clubs became District 981. District 981 was in 1991 renamed District 9810.
Our Club and District lineage is as follow:
1921 Rotary Club of Melbourne
1928 Australia named Rotary District 65
1949 District 65 renamed to District 28
1953 Rotary Club of Hawthorn – Rotary District 28
1956 Rotary Club of Camberwell Sponsoring Club – Rotary District 28
1957 District 28 renamed District 280
1965 Rotary Club of Lilydale – Rotary District 280
1976 Rotary Club of Upper Yarra – Rotary District 280
1977 District name change to District 980
1980 Rotary Club of Montrose & District – Rotary District 980
1982 District 980 renamed District 981
1984 Rotary Club of Wandin – Rotary District 981
1991 District 981 renamed District 9810
1994 Rotary Club of Chirnside Park (1994 – 2014) – Rotary District 9810

SERVICE PROJECTS
Blue Light Disco A joint venture with Lilydale Police 1982-1987In partnership with the Lilydale Police, the club was involved in the management and conduct of the Blue Light Disco for teenagers and young adults from the Lilydale and Yarra Valley region. The Disco was conducted monthly in the Jean Eales Pavilion within the Lilydale Showgrounds. It was a very popular event with regular attendance numbers exceeding 1300 during 1984 – 1985.
The Rotary Club of Lilydale in “Serving The Community for 50 Years” has been actively involved in a diverse range of programs and projects. A number are summarised over the next pages.
1988 National Bi-Centennial Event – Penny Farthing bike ride around Australia $100,000+ Raised for PolioPlus ProgramClub member Phil McDonald, along with a Rotary Club of Lilydale Support Team headed by John Henkes, rode his $1,600 Penny Farthing Bicycle around Australia. Phil averaged 130 kilometres per day for over 5 months, covering over 16,000 kilometres. The total sponsorships for Phil and the Support Team’s efforts raised over $100,000 for the Rotary Foundation PolioPlus campaign, plus promoted Rotary Australia wide. Phil’s efforts earned him not only a Guinness Book World Record but also a Paul Harris Fellow. Phil’s explanation of the bike purchase and ride can be viewed on a YouTube clip at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3sPHelNV-k
Not only was this a great project partnering with the Lilydale Police, but also was a great contributor to the expansion development costs of the Lilydale Youth Club Building.

Yarra Valley Life Education 1989 – 1997 – Club Investment $61,000+Life Education was developed as a program to teach children about healthy living and how to make choices, particularly in relation to drugs. The program was delivered by specially trained teachers visiting primary schools in a mobile “magic” classroom.
In 1988/9 club member Don Downie proposed that the club spearhead the formation of Yarra Valley Life Education. Don, assisted by PP Gordon Bail set about raising the considerable funds required.
With the funds raised, a retired passenger bus was purchased and under the supervision of Rotarian Bruce Watts, was transformed into the “magic” mobile classroom. Yarra Valley Life Education was formally launched in June 1989 and a committee of management formed.
The Rotary Club continued its support for the program and by 1992/3 the management committee consisted largely of members of the Rotary Clubs of Wandin and Lilydale and was chaired by club member Patrick Hartley .
Eventually the bus came to the end of its useful life and was replaced by a purpose built Caravan which continued to serve the schools in the Yarra Valley during the mid to late 1990s. The Club’s investment in the bus, the caravan and the program was in excess of $61,000.
Art and Craft Fair 1992 – 2000 Turnover $230,000
The Art and Craft Fair was an initiative inspired by a similar successful project run by the Rotary Club of Deloraine in Tasmania. Lilydale Rotarians Barry McDonald and Owen Cruickshank volunteered to go over and have a chat with the Deloraine People, make an assessment, and report back to the Club.
On the basis of their enthusiastic feedback the Rotary Club of Lilydale adopted the proposal and the first Fair was held in the Lilydale A&H Showgrounds and the Youth Club precinct on the Labour Day Weekend 1991/92.
The fair was of a scale that occupied all the available buildings, that is the Jean Eales and Frank Wilkinson Pavilions, the entire Youth Club building and the CFA Training track and adjacent structures. Much care was given to selecting the forty or fifty participating Artisans and Stallholders in order to ensure that the focus was on genuine craftspeople, who could not only sell their wares, but where practicable demonstrate their skills and techniques to the public. The event was further enhanced by sponsoring school choirs and musicians to perform from time to time.
The Fair in the 1990’s became a primary fund-raiser for the Club, with a turnover exceeding $230,000 and a profit of around $88,000 during its life. In the early stages much of the profit was ploughed into promotion and the acquisition of dismountable partitioning, signage and all the paraphernalia required for such a large event.
The enduring legacy of the Art and Craft Fair is the Bruce Watts Annexe which was constructed principally to house the Fair equipment and was, financed by profits from the Fair, as were many other local community projects. The last fair was held in 2000.

Foundation for Homeless Youth 1995 – The Rotary Club of Lilydale’s involvement started at the District Assembly in May 1995 at the start of Rod Blackburn’s year as President.
A proposal was put to the Board and the club for its backing by the Youth Director – Peter Loosley to provide residential accommodation facilities for homeless youth in the Shire of Lillydale. To enable the project to proceed the Club had to commit to raising $45,000 as our cash contribution plus donations in kind.
We were able to do this but the project did not start until 1997 after much discussion with the Board of the Homeless Youth Foundation concerning the legal problems of our and other clubs’ involvement. Club member Ken Smith, a solicitor, drafted a contract which protected all parties including other Rotary clubs that were involved.
Huge support from the club was provided, with special efforts by Ken Mitchell who organized gifts in kind, David Law excavating and moving many truckloads of earth to start construction, Ian Wheeler undertaking the plumbing, and Robin Johnston undertaking the electrical work plus obtaining an $8000 donation from the Wandin Silvan Field Day. Club working bees finished off the residential property with the digging of paths and laying of concrete.
The house was finally occupied by 3 young girls and a lead tenant. All of the tenants were short to medium stays and a few went on to go to university. All the girls that were eligible came from disruptive or broken homes and had to be kept out of harm’s way. The management of the home was carried out by Yarra Ranges Christian Care which became Anchor Community Care.
With the Foundation for Homeless Youth being wound up in 2015, the residential accommodation facilities will continue under the control of the Department of Justice and its new managers.
This is another example of the Rotary Club of Lilydale “Making a Difference”.

Lilydale Showcase Peter Loosely and Ian Darvell presentation to best stall holder – showcase.
Catering at the Lilydale Show.
Lilydale Show – 1971- 2012 Income Raised $145,000+The Rotary Club of Lilydale has had an affiliation with the Annual Lilydale Show community event, conducted by the Lilydale Agricultural and Horticultural Society (LA&HS) for over 40 years. It has been a great opportunity for the club to be seen working in the local community. In the early days the club prepared and sold show bags, progressing to the manning of the Show Entry Gates plus the operation of a refreshment kitchen selling a range of food and drinks.
During the early 2000’s the Club, through member Ian Darvell, was responsible for the operation of the Lilydale Showcase Pavilion promoting products from local growers and producers. This entailed sourcing and engaging business to display their products. Additionally the Club was involved in providing and setting up (and take-down) the stall sites in the Jean Eales Pavilion for the Art and Craft, as well as the Cookery entrants/displays.
The Club ceased the co-ordination of the Show Entry gates in 2012, when the LA&HS engaged the local Scout Association. Approximately 360 man hours was required to service the Entry Gates over the Saturday/Sunday. Since 2000, the controlling operation was based at our Bruce Watts Pavilion for the Show weekend, and though very intensive, the Show became a great fellowship opportunity for all members (and quite often family and friends).
Total income from the activities associated with the Lilydale Show has raised in excess of $145,000 which has been put back into community projects.

Lillydale Lake InfrastructureThe Club has undertaken many projects at Lillydale Lake, commencing in 1988 with the installation of extensive playground equipment followed by construction of picnic/BBQ shelters, jetties and boardwalks in the wetlands area, planting the Arboretum, installing lake seating and tables, water tank for WC buildings and more recently a gazebo at the adjacent Bellbird Park.
Help for Wildlife 2004 – 2008Help For Wildlife is a 24 hour state wide wildlife conservation and emergency service that operates as a volunteer, community based, not-for-profit non-political organisation. Help for Wildlife attends to after-hours emergency calls for many organisations including the Healesville Sanctuary. It has professional working relationships with DSE, DPI, Parks Vic, Victorian Police, CFA, local Councils, Welfare Agencies and others.
In 2004 The Rotary Club Lilydale, in conjunction with Help for Wildlife prepared a submission to Vic Roads for road signage approval, which contained the Rotary International emblem and display the local Club’s name.
Individual clubs ordered these signs through the Rotary Club of Lilydale and liaise with their local municipal authority and/or local Vic Roads for approval to install the sign in agreed locations. Signs can be seen in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Lilydale Farmers Produce Market 2009 – The Rotary Clubs of Lilydale, Montrose & District, and the former Chirnside Park started this initiative in March 2009. The latter’s role was taken up by the Rotaract Club of Yarra Ranges in July 2014.
The goal of setting up the market was twofold; to help support the regional producers and at the same time raise money for local and international projects. The market and its stalls continue to evolve. The treasurer for the Lilydale Farmers Produce Market has distributed profits of $120,000 to the three clubs for various Rotary projects. The Market is held on the first Sunday of the month, from 8am to 1pm, at Bellbird Park (next to Lillydale Lake), Swansea Road, Lilydale, (Melways Ref 38 G8), with easy access and car parking.

Community Policing Vehicle 2012 – The Rotary Clubs of Healesville, Wandin, Upper Yarra and Lilydale have jointly funded a community policing vehicle which is used throughout the Yarra Valley by our Community Policing Officers. The vehicle and its drivers are out and about in the Community for year 10 driver education programs and road safety, conducting Mental Health First Aid Courses, attending seminars on Elder Abuse, and meeting with Yarra Ranges Council Youth Services Officers. Additionally, the car is used to assist Community Police Officers in visiting the elderly and providing information about safety and security in helping older persons on how to live confidently in the community.

ANZAC CENTENARY COMMEMORATION 2014The ANZAC Centenary Commemoration was celebrated in conjunction with Lilydale RSL. Anthony McAleer of the RSL Lilydale, headed a committee of which Club Secretary Margi Sank and President Helen McDonald were members, to organise two events to celebrate what occurred 100 years ago in Lilydale. Through the club the Committee were successful in obtaining a government grant to install historic storyboards.
On the current site of Lillydale Lake an encampment took place in February 1914 with over 1000 infantrymen under the command of John Monash, who was later to become Sir John Monash. A story board and plaque was unveiled at Lillydale Lake to stand as a reminder of such an historical event.
The other site was at Mount Mary Coldstream where a mock battle took place with Sir John Monash in charge. A story board and plaque were unveiled overlooking the Coldstream site with historical information and to commemorate this important event that occurred 100 years ago.
Our Rotary Club was proud to have been able to help the RSL to organise and be involved in the ceremonies to celebrate such important historical events in our community. Both ceremonies were well attended by community groups. Commerative Sir John Monash Lilydale History Storyboard – Lillydale Lake.

Student Letter of Appreciation – National Youth Science ForumFrom: Laura Driessen Sent: Tuesday, July 14, 2015 7:03 PMTo: [email protected] Subject: Thank you, from an NYSF Alumni
Dear Rotary Lilydale, In 2009, your rotary branch kindly supported my attendance at the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) that ran in the summer of 2010. Thank you very much.
After I finished VCE in 2010, I went on to study a Bachelor of Science (Science Scholars) program at Monash University. I graduated in the middle of last year (2014) with a high distinction average and majors in Astrophysics and Applied Mathematics.
While I was studying at Monash University, I was awarded a scholarship to complete a three month exchange at the University of Warwick in the UK (near Birmingham). While I was on exchange, I was invited to visit Meknes, Morocco, to attend and present at a student forum.
Over the 2013-2014 summer holidays, I completed a studentship at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research. While there I imaged and studied the centre of our Milky Way galaxy using a brand new radio telescope, the Murchison Widefield Array.
The weekend after I finished my final semester (I finished in June 2014) I attended another summer studentship at the The Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) in Dwingeloo, The Netherlands. There I studied the pulsar in the Crab Nebula and found some interesting results.
After the studentship at ASTRON, I started applying for overseas universities to study a master’s degree in astronomy, specifically radio astronomy. Just two weeks ago, I found at that I had received the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship to attend the University of Amsterdam. I will be leaving for the Netherlands on the 16th of August to complete this two-year master’s degree.
Thank you so much for helping me to attend NYSF. Before attending the International Science School for two weeks in 2009 and NYSF in 2010, I didn’t realise that being a scientist was a real job. I loved science so much but everyone was telling me to be a doctor or a physiotherapist. And while those are great careers, they weren’t for me. Now I can’t think of any other career than one in radio astronomy.
Kind regards, Laura Driessen

Schools Bullystoppers ProjectThe Bullystoppers Project, is a multigenerational Peace through Art Project, to address the issue of bullying and Cybersafety. This involved several local primary schools working through art to communicate that bullying would not be tolerated at school or in the community. The teachers encouraged students to engage in various forms of artwork to create the message of no tolerance of bullying in schools. The completed artworks were then displayed in the community rooms in the Station House, Mt Evelyn. This successful program is now being expanded into other schools within and outside the Yarra Ranges.

ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENTS PROGRAM (YEP)The Rotary Youth Exchange Program (YEP) provides secondary school students aged 15 to 17, sponsored by a Rotary Club, with the opportunity to live and study abroad with host families for one academic year, to learn a new language and a new way of living. Exchange students form part of the ambassadorial team of Rotary International promoting international goodwill, peace and understanding. The students also have opportunities for personal development and making international friends and contacts that can have positive benefits for their future lives.
Students stay with host families as arranged by the Host Rotary Club. In most cases there is more than one host family, the usual arrangement being three or four. This enables students to experience life in a
foreign culture with several family units over their 12 month term.
Due to the arrival of many of the southern hemisphere students in January and the northern hemisphere students in July or August, there is a group of students that are half a year behind, or ahead, of that current generation. An Australian “outgoing student” will usually depart either January or February, staying in their host country until the beginning of the next year.
The Rotary Club of Lilydale has been an active and ongoing supporter of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program (YEP) for many years.

Arrivederci from Andrea To the amazing Rotary Club of Lilydale, sadly a year has already past and in just a few hours I will be on my plane that is gonna take me back to Italy, It has been an incredible experience that I will never forget, this country is very different from Italy for this reason I was a bit afraid when I got here but after a bit of time I have started to love Australia.
I must be honest the first/second months have been a very big and hard challenge because I wasn’t used to that live stile but with the help of mine beautiful host parents and amazing friends I have been able to overcome this challenge.
Nothing of this could have been possible without all your help so I’m really thankful for this opportunity that you gave me and I can say how much I enjoyed it, definitively I’ll come back one year and I hope to see you all again.
Arrivederci

Elly Taylor outward exchange student – 2009
I was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lilydale to go on exchange to Austria in 2009. This was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life, largely because I had never been outside of Australia or away from my family for more than a week or so. Suddenly I found myself, at the age of 16, on the other side of the world with a family who spoke very little English! Fortunately, the two families that took me in over the year were extraordinarily generous and treated me like one of their own children.
My year on exchange brought with it many challenges. Some I expected like the
language barrier, starting at a new school, and making new friends. Some challenges surprised me,
such as navigating the public transport system, accidentally ending up in the wrong country on the way home from
school, and trying to communicate effectively in German while suffering from Swine Flu.Needless to say, there were many wonderful experiences too; learning about Austrian holiday traditions and celebrating
Easter and Christmas with a different family, going on a school trip to Rome with my Latin class, and learning the local
dialect by babysitting my host-niece (who spoke exclusively in northern-Austrian slang!). The experiences and opportunities
I had, getting to know day-to-day life in rural Austria, learning the local traditions and history, is something unique to
Rotary Youth Exchange.
Being involved in Rotary Youth Exchange had a huge impact on my life. It made me more confident, independent and understanding of the world around me. It also led me to discover my passion for learning languages, which has played a huge part in my life in the years since. It also gave me a
taste for travel and adventure. In 2011 some friends and I took part in the Mongol Rally, a charity drive from England to Mongolia, which we successfully completed in an ambulance we called Olive. With the help of the Rotary Club of Lilydale we
raised a large amount of money for the Christina Noble Foundation, a charity that supports homeless children in Mongolia. Naturally this trip
included a brief stopover to visit my host families in Austria along the way.
Today, in 2015, I am studying Psychology and Spanish at Monash University and I look for any opportunity to
travel for my studies. In 2014 I completed an internship in Spain and then spent a semester studying in Chile.
Although my German is not quite as good as it once was, I still maintain contact with my host-families
and some friends from my exchange in Austria. Now, several years later, I can appreciate more than ever how incredibly lucky I was to have
my time in Austria and what an impact it had on me.I am so appreciative of the help and support given to me by the Rotary Club of Lilydale
over the years.
Congratulations on turning 50 and best wishes for the future,Elly Taylor

EXCHANGE STUDENTS REFLECTIONS ON THEIR YEAR AND NOW
29
When I first arrived in Australia I was a very insecure boy on a first of many adventures. I had the privilege to meet many people there who helped me grow as a person. I also got the opportunity to see a lot of the country, I made a lot of friends and I got another four families on the other side of the earth. I was a very different person leaving Australia and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity that my parents gave me to go on such an adventure.During my time In Australia I biked from Melbourne to Canberra. I went to Alice Springs and had a blast all the way there and back with all the other exchange students. I bungy jumped twice in Cairns. I went hiking, water skiing and camping and did a lot more during my year. All thanks to the people I met in Australia. As soon as I got back to Sweden I started to plan my next visit to down under and so far I’ve been back twice.Besides going back to Australia I’ve travelled the US for a couple of months. Most of my adventures are happening closer to home though. Alpine touring being one of my biggest hobbies but also hiking in the summertime and camping is close to my heart. I’ve also done a lot of Mountain biking and kayaking. One of the most memorable kayaking trips was between Sweden and Finland with my brother.
I have a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy and one in mechanical engineering. For the last two years I’ve been working as a research engineer in the Sports Research Lab in the University of Umeå.When studying in engineering back in 2010 I met the love of my life, Terese, and our wedding will be in a year.Extra thanks to Marion and Rod, Helen and Peter, Beryl and Phil and Janine and Ray for taking me in to their lives and making me a part of it.
My time in AustraliaI remember coming to Australia and being greeted by most of the club in the middle of the night! That set the course for the rest of my stay – heaps of good friends, adventures and surprises! I have so many fond memories, such as going to Healesville Sanctuary, my 17th birthday, learning to eat sushi at Ian and Helen’s, the bike ride to Tasmania and, of course, the trip to Uluru! I also remember the club meetings – to this day, I know Advance Australia Fair by heart. I am grateful for Lilydale Rotary Club accepting me as an exchange student. I had the time of my life! My life todayThe year in Australia has affected my life choices and dreams, as I found a love of travelling. In high school I went on exchange for two weeks to Finland, and at university, I chose an international degree with many foreign students. I spent my 4th semester in Australia at Swinburne University of Technology. I just had to come back to see my friends! Before arriving, I spent two weeks in Canada, where I visited Juliann, a former exchange student at Box Hill Rotary Club, and attended her wedding. We don’t see each other often, but I still consider Juliann one of my closest friends. We call each other ‘my sister from across the sea’.
I live with my boyfriend Rune and our four cats in an apartment in Randers, Denmark. I spend my time volunteering, and I’m a board member of three organisations. I’ve finished my studies with a master degree in Culture, Communication and Globalisation, and I’m looking for my first job. My dream is to be an international coordinator at a university and help others go abroad.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS:The Club has always had an active interest in assisting in the International arena, especially to help our nearby neighbours. In the early years of the Club members were off to build water tanks in Manus Island and since 2000 East Timor or Timor Leste has been a focus of attention.
Following the Club’s purchase and refurbishment of a second hand truck, club members drove this truck to Darwin wharf for shipping to Dili, Timor Leste, and then drove to Baucau for use by a fledgling company established by three local Victorian Rotary Clubs – East Timor Roofing Company.
Club and family members have consistently visited Timor Leste over the years to provide support, undertake necessary maintenance and equipment upgrade work, delivery of a further motor vehicle along with the development of a number of new projects. A brief summary of these is outlined.
East Timor Roofing Company (2000 – )In 2000, the Rotary Club of Lilydale, along with the Rotary Clubs of Doncaster and Melbourne, established the East Timor Roofing Company. The Company makes corrugated roofing iron, folded sheet metal ridge capping and flashing, pre-fabricated lightweight steel roof trusses, purlins, wall frame stud and track, guttering, water tanks or grain silos.
Currently, East Timor Roofing has assets in excess of $1.8million.
East Timor Roofing Unipessoal Lda, is located in Baucau East Timor and supplies a wide range of roofing products, all manufactured from quality Australian steel. The factory has a comprehensive array of metal fabrication machinery, supported by a full maintenance workshop and administration office. The ETR Manager is Norm Bruce OAM and has control of over 22 Timorese staff. Tim Hewitt is the Rotary Club of Lilydale’s nominee, as a Director on the Company Board. In 2014, David Yates (RC Lilydale) became a Committee member and is actively involved in the financial operations of the East Timor Roofing Company. Information can be found on the company’s website.

Water for Hungry Months“Water for Hungry Months” is an exciting humanitarian project to complement the efforts of our other Rotary projects in Timor Leste. It is a joint initiative of the Rotary Club of Lilydale and the Rotary Club of Doncaster. The commencement of this project has been made possible by the existence of East Timor Roofing Company (ETR) and the funds raised through its commercial operations, plus the Club’s success in acquiring obsolete drilling equipment in rural Victoria. Club members were involved in the transport of the equipment to Timor Leste and the subsequent commissioning of the drilling rig with the successful striking of water at a depth of 34metres. The project provides access to clean drinking water from existing reliable aquifers, during Timor Leste’s dry period (April through October), through a cooperative groundwater drilling program with the local villagers.
Bairo Pite Hospital Timor-Leste (2012 – )This project commenced in 2012 when two nurses, led by Jenny Selway, a club member, visited the Bairo Pite Clinic in Dili, Timor-Leste. During their visit, time was spent investigating needs of the clinic and ways in which ongoing help could be offered. Through continued fundraising and donations of goods, there have been many deliveries of medical and nursing supplies to the clinic. General supplies such as linen, hand wash, toys and clothes, plus an industrialised washing machine have also been sent.
The project also sponsors the employment and education of a full-time staff & a part-time staff member working in the Malnutrition Room at the clinic. These staff attend to unwell children and endeavour to improve the parents knowledge of diet and health matters.
The Bairo Pite Clinic (BPC) is located in the capital city of Dili and provides free healthcare services in its commitment to serve the people of Timor-Leste. Having saved the lives of thousands of men, women and children, the Clinic with 55 inpatient beds established by Dr Dan Murphy in 1999, is one of Timor-Leste’s greatest success stories. In February 2012, the Bairo Pite Clinic merged with the Hospital of Hope to become the Bairo Pite Hospital.

Timor TeddiesAs a flow on from the Bairo Pite Clinic Project, Trauma Teddies, a “Teddies” knitting program was initiated by Lilydale Rotarians Rhonda Kellett and Jenny Selway. These members have co-opted teams of knitting individuals to knit the Teddies. Sponsorship of a knitted Teddy assists in freight costs for the transport of donated medical goods and supplies to the Clinic, as well as a Timorese child receiving the sponsored Teddy. Donations to assist in freight costs are always welcome.
Donation in Kind (DIK) Donation in Kind (DIK) ) is a program supported by Rotary Clubs in Australia which grew out of the compassion and concern of returning overseas volunteers.
The program involves the collection, sorting, packing, dispatch and distribution of donated items to countries in need of these goods.
The club has been very active in this area over the last 15 years, sourcing surplus stationery and office supplies, medical beds/equipment, school chairs, desks and furniture following upgrades along with fabric donated by Dollar Curtains. Club members are regularly making deliveries of fabric and school furniture to the DIK Store in Footscray.
Excess stationery and office supplies have been distributed by DIK throughout the Asia Pacific region and beyond. The donated fabrics are highly sought after and have been turned into sleeping mats, rice bags, clothing etc. by recipients. Currently, the Club has an intensive push to source school chairs & desks for shipment to Timor-Leste.

Wheelchairs for KidsWheelchairs for Kids is a program that enables disabled children overseas to gain mobility, which has been supported by the Club, with one member actively taking on the role to raise funds to cover the container shipping costs.
Polio EradicationIn association with Rotary International, our club contributes to the eradication of Polio. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative has helped immunize more than 2 billion children in 122 countries against polio. Since the PolioPlus program’s inception in 1985, more than two billion children have received oral polio vaccine. Apart from the Club’s Annual contribution, club members have raised additional funds via activities detailed in Rotary Programs below.
Rotary Programs The Club has been a consistent supporter of Rotary Foundation’s Annual Giving Program as well as special Fund Raising efforts via a range of measures. These include:• Bi Centennial Bike Ride on a Penny Farthing
around Australia for PolioPlus – Club member Phil
McDonald with a Club support team rode around Australia raising in excess of $100,000;
• Sale of Rotary Car Badges Charter Member Dr Bill Hardy selling of Rotary
car badges, resulting in PP Dr. Bill Hardy being presented at 1986/1987 Canberra Conference with Rotary Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award – (only second awarded in Australia);
• Dodgey Tours and Chansett Airlines – World Tour Flight & Dining Experience for PolioPlus
In 2002/2003 club members and many friends enjoyed a great evening of “flying” to international airports to dine on international cuisine and have lots of fun with the “local” characters. These efforts raised in excess of $5,000 and with the multiplier effect from The Rotary Foundation and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation the final result was in excess of ten fold.
During the initial 20 years of the Club, it was reported that the Club was a 100% Rotary Foundation Club advancing to a 1200% Rotary Foundation Club in 1980 -1981.
In addition the Club has partnered other Clubs in obtaining Matching Grants from District for local and overseas projects. Recent projects included “Water in China” as well as a RAWCS project at Casa Vide House in East Timor.
The total club funds contributed to Rotary Foundation is well in excess of $200,000.
The Club has been a consistent contributor to Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (A.R.H.R.F) contributing in excess of $30,000.
Other Rotary Programs of Interplast, ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) and RAM (Rotarians Against Malaria), Disaster Aid Boxes and Water boxes have been regularly supported.
The Club achieved the status of a 100% F.A.I.M.# Club in 1981 – 1982.
Community BBQs & Sausage SizzlesRotary wouldn’t be Rotary without the occasional BBQ or raffle to raise funds and have fellowship.
Friendship & Fellowship The Rotary Club of Lilydale is your club, whether you are a member or not.
A hallmark of our Cub is our fellowship activities.
The club is a mix of men and women from a range of backgrounds of all ages who enjoy the friendship Rotary offers whilst giving back to their community and taking part in wider international Rotary programs. Although some of our members may qualify for senior citizen cards, the age of our members ranges from the late 30’s upwards.
We welcome new members. Age, gender, occupation or nationality do not make any difference – what we have in the Rotary Club of Lilydale is a willingness to work so that those less fortunate, whether it be here, in Australia or overseas, can have a healthier and more fulfilling life.
We derive a great deal of pleasure from what we do and have a great deal of fun doing it, whether it be working in the Community, away on dedicated Fellowship weekends or events, as well as at Conference.

ROTARY CONFERENCESClub members and partners have consistently travelled to Conference, no matter whether it was within or outside the State over the past 50 years. They have enjoyed the Conference speakers but more especially the fellowship and friendships that are made at such events. Comments from the District Conference of 1967-68, with accommodation at Palm Lake Motel Melbourne…. “Memories of midnight swims, with Ken Scott wearing strange bathers. Quiet drinkers in the corner. Mod Night…Never to be forgotten”. Club dress up competition was a keen part of the Conference and actively participated by Club members.

District Governor 2000/2001 from within the clubIn 1998, the club successfully nominated PP Patrick Hartley as District Governor for 2000/2001 thus beginning a learning and training process for both Patrick and Renate, which culminated at the International Assembly at Anaheim in January 2000.
To join over 500 other incoming DGs from around the world really emphasised the internationality of Rotary. In addition getting to know and forming friendships with the other Australian incoming Governors was a highlight.
As well as being required to visit every club in the District, the Governor is required to organise, with the help of one or two clubs, the President Elects Training and the District Assembly. Both require a good deal of work. However the major project is organising the District Conference, traditionally with the assistance of the DG’s home club.
Our conference – 2 years in the planning – was held in Adelaide and strongly supported.
Input of the committee under the chairmanship of PP Peter Loosley was vital as was the assistance of all club members and partners. We all returned home with happy memories.
Club visits are also a highlight of the Governor’s year – meeting so many members and forming friendships which last well beyond one year. It also provides a view of the multiplicity of projects – both local and international – being undertaken by clubs in District 9810.
One such highlight of course was the start of the East Timor Roofing project which the Club is still involved with 14 years later.
Once the year is over the now past Governor continues to be active in District affairs. PDG Patrick has chaired the Youth and the International committees, acted as District Trainer and served on the Board of Australian Rotary Health.

2001 Adelaide ConferenceThe Club had the honour of organising and co-ordinating the successful District 9810 Adelaide Conference held in April 2001 to coincide with club member Patrick Hartley’s role as District Governor.
The logistics involved in organising the Conference included:• Visiting Adelaide to co-ordinate venues, accommodation and services;• Locating and booking of Conference speakers;• Co-ordinating the marketing of the Conference• Responding to bookings/enquiries;• Engaging the entertainment for the Conference; plus• Financial Management of the whole process.
The organising which commenced some 2 years out and though very demanding really galvanised the club, and produced a very professional and satisfying result at the Adelaide Showgrounds and the Adelaide Convention Centre.
Club Members and their partners were well represented at this 2001 Adelaide Conference.

Rotary Ride to ConferenceRide to Conference, which achieves a 30 year milestone in March 2016, is a fund raiser for Australian Rotary Health. It is anticipated that the 2016 Ride to Conference will enable total funds raised to exceed $1,000,000.
The Rotary Club of Lilydale has been a consistent supporter of the Ride to Conference, over the past 25+ years. Club members and partners have not only participated on the ride, but have been very regular contributors to supplying support drivers and personnel, critical for the success of the ride.
In the years that the club has had Exchange Students, they have been sponsored and participate in the ride. Members not on the ride regularly sponsor riders, especially the Exchange Students.
