Again I commence my report on a sad note with the passing of a beloved member in Loraine Harrison, who passed away in Kyabram Hospital on the 23rd of November aged 84 years, a lovely lady who will be sadly missed. Our thoughts and sincere condolences to Ray and family.

I would also like to offer our sincere condolences to Susan Ivers having her mother pass away in November, to Sue and Kelvin our thoughts are with you both.

I have just been notified also of the passing of long-term member Joy King – our thoughts are with Bob and family.

We have certainly experienced some fun rallies of late – Mystery Rally, Progressive Lunch, Coffee runs. Thank you again to John, Hughie and Robyn – you’re all doing a great job and I know our members do appreciate the effort you all put in.

The executive committee are all set for another year of guiding our club to the best of our abilities, and I would like to welcome back into the fold Julie Tyrrell as committee lady, thank you Julie for committing again. I look forward to working with you and the present executive committee who are all talented, hard working people resulting in in a happy committee. I am so lucky to be involved with such a wonderful group of people.

The club’s next major event for the year, our Christmas party and concours, is 10am to 4pm 15th December. Come along have some fun, bring the grandchildren, Santa will be ready for them !!

Next year, apart from our normal rallies and coffee runs, Swap Meet, etc, there are two major events for November 2020. The Rally of the Valley is to be organised. Currently seven members have come forward to form a sub-committee, thank you one and all. The club’s 50th year celebrations - the Catering Committee have already secured a booking at the Woolshed on 27th November 2020 for a dinner dance etc. Any suggestions are welcome for maybe a rally, badges, etc, so thinking caps on members – it is your club and it’s a hell of a milestone. No doubt there will be plenty of prompting throughout the coming months as it will be a big year of organising and to co-ordinate these events.

Well my friends I do hope you are all well, no doubt a busy month with Christmas and family commitments. I look forward to the New Year with our great club, see you all at the meeting 12th of December then the Christmas party the 15th of December.

Saturday 12th October – “Wheels at the Gum” Car & Bike Show at Merrigum.

19th-20th October – The Mystery Weekend. 24 vehicles with 48 people took part in this excellent event to Maryborough, run by Robyn and Hughie MacFadyen.

Saturday 19th October – Kyabram Show. Wednesday 23rd October – Mid week coffee run to

Mooroopna, another excellent event with 25 cars and 47 people taking part.

Wednesday 23rd October – Numurkah Show. Friday 1st to Tuesday 5th November – “Gateway to

Gippsland Rally” at Warragul.

Coming Events – 16th November – Saturday social Day at the Clubrooms. 16th-17th November – Bendigo Swap at the Prince of

Wales Showgrounds. Sunday 24th November – Progressive Lunch, starting at

Federation: Lloyd Healey reported on the last Federation meeting held at Hobson’s Bay. The Federation recommends that completed log books must be kept for at least 12 months. Members are still needed to attend the AHMF 20/20 rally in Albury next year as numbers of participants are lower than hoped for.

Rally report: Brendan Walsh reported on the annual rally of the Veteran Club at Wangaratta.

Allan Weeks gave a report on The Campervan, Motorhome Club of Australia (with a membership of 68,000) National Rally that was held at the Events Centre at Elmore.

Notes from the November Committee meeting : At the time of the meeting, all members with Club

Permit vehicles have paid their 2020 subs. A bus trip to Yarra Glen is being considered for

February. To be raised at the December meeting. The Federation is supporting the distribution of ex-

hospital towels via Bendigo Bank branches as a fund-raiser for breast cancer sufferers and their families.

Saturday Social Day on December 21 to be from 4:30-9:00pm.

The urn on the kitchen wall is to be checked for a possible malfunction.

The 2020 Rally of the Valley committee is to be Bill Holyman, Alan Lavis, Rob Balfour, Brendan Walsh, Neil Hammond, Liz Capuano and Leigh Johnston.

Oscar Piastri has won the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup with seven wins, three seconds, one third and 320 points in the 20-race season. His team-mate, Aleksandr Smolyar, came third with 255 points.

Oscar’s racing team, R-ace GP, won the teams’ championship with 637 points. Oscar is likely to move up to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020. Last month he took part in

two days of an official three-day F3 test in Valencia, Spain, topping the timesheets in the last session before heading to Abu Dhabi.

**Ladies’ Christmas Lunch, Tatura – Friday 13th December 2019 We have booked our Christmas Lunch at The Gallery in Tatura on Friday 13th

December. They will provide a two-course full Christmas meal at $25 per head. Tea and coffee are free. Drinks are available from the counter.

Bring along a gift for Santa’s Bag up to the value of $15 to share during the meal. It’s always a lovely way to get into the Christmas spirit which will be here before we know

**Christmas Break-up and Concours, Grahamvale P.S. – 10am-4pm 15th December 2019 Yes, it’s that time of year again. Our annual concours and picnic lunch is on

again at Grahamvale School. What “new” vehicles will be there this year? Newer members (and older ones!), this is a great social occasion where you can meet in a relaxed atmosphere and see some of the great cars that we have in the Club.

Please feel free to bring the kids or grandkids – there is plenty of room for the kids to run around and play. And, there is a rumour that the old fat bloke will be there – the one in red, of course. Please remember to leave anything for him to deliver (with a name on it!) with one of the Committee on the day.

Bring your own lunch, sweets bowl and chair – tea/coffee/soft drinks/water/ice cream are provided. Of course, being a school, it is a dry area.

** Mid-Week Coffee Run to Kialla – Wednesday 18th December 2019 With Christmas fast approaching, our December Coffee Run will be to The

Provender & Co, Emerald Bank, Kialla. A chance for those organised to enjoy a little relaxation and for those not fully organised to do a little last-minute shopping in Shepparton.

The Chocolate Apple Factory is now open in the Windmill at Emerald Bank – worth a look and the product certainly worth a taste. The Emerald Bank Nursery is also worth a wander around.

New Year’s Eve Festival, Mooroopna – 31st December 2019 The Rotary Club of Mooroopna always welcomes our support with our vehicles in

the New Year’s Eve street parade and festival. Interested members please meet at Mooroopna War Memorial parking area at 6pm. (Opposite McDonald’s). The parade will start at 6.30pm. A police vehicle will lead the parade followed by Vintage/Classic vehicles, kids on bikes, floats and trucks.

On reaching the reserve, members are requested to form a static display (for a short period) at the end of the parade. Stay for as long as you like – it is a good night!

BYO chairs; food and drink available.

**Twilight in Nathalia – 12th January 2020 This very popular event on the Club calendar is on again in 2020. Keep the evening free – the details

will be in the January Journal.

Australia Day celebrations – 26th January 2020 The Club supports Australia Day celebrations at various locations, the main one being Mooroopna.

Swanpool Motor Festival – 2nd February 2020 The Swanpool Motor Festival is to be held at the Albert Heaney Oval, 2426

Midland Hwy. Entry from 8am by Gold coin, display car entry is $5, prize pool of $2000.

There will be swap and market stalls, catering, live band and live broadcast from Radio Mansfield 99.7FM.

**Red Plate Day, John and Jenny Grieve’s, Kialla – from 9am 16th February 2020 This is a great opportunity to have your car checked for safety by some of the

experienced mechanics in the Club. For those of us that aren’t mechanics, issues can develop which we aren’t aware of, which could bite us (yes; that happens to mechanics too!). This is particularly desirable if you are taking the car on one of the Club touring rallies.

The Club goes to some effort to make this service available to members, so if your special car hasn’t been checked for some time, why not bring it along and put it over the pit?

John and Jenny host us in their delightful garden for a BBQ lunch after the checking is done. Even if you don’t want to have your car checked out, this is a great social event. BYO chair.

Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport – 5th-8th March 2020 Once again these dates fall one week prior to the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park

which makes it truly an exceptional week of Motor Sport in Melbourne with two of Victoria’s major sporting events.

Recognised as one of the world’s largest historic motor racing events on the international calendar by the number of entries and races held over the three days, the Phillip Island Classic is expected to once again draw more than 500 entries with vehicles from around the world.

Delegates’ Meeting and Annual General Meeting, Springvale – 25th November 2019

The November meeting was the annual meeting of the AOMC with the election of office bearers, so the meeting was taken up with mostly housekeeping. The Guest Speaker was Maria Tilling from BP Australia.

The only news was from VicRoads : (1) Changes to road safety regulations which came into effect on the 29th October. (2) The Club Permit Scheme review will be handed down after the May Budget next year. (is it going to cost us more???)

Delegates’ Meeting, Werribee – 19th October 2019 F.I.V.A. – International Federation of Historic Vehicles, have been based in Europe since 1966. The ground work they have done recently on drawing everyone’s attention into the same thought process to align vehicle classification. Categorisation of vehicles: Ancestor 0000 to 1904 Veteran 1905-1918 Vintage 1919-1930, Post Vintage 1931-1945 Post War 1946-1960 Historic 60s 1961-1970, Historic 70s 1971-1980 Historic 80s 1981-1990 Historic 90s 1991-24 years old. Discussions with clubs is encouraged and concerns to be brought back to the next meeting. FIVA have adopted all these changes to the classifications.

Log Books - It was pointed out that it would be wise to keep your old log book for 12 months, if you are not already doing this.

Club Permit Scheme - There have been no updates from VicRoads at all. There was supposed to be meetings coming up to go over the rules but nothing. I do trust that member clubs are keeping an eye on the safety condition of vehicles they have attached to their club and that action is being taken on members who are not doing the right thing. VicRoads do have the authority to withdraw any Club’s privilege of CPS from them and that then means no members’ cars can be used. VicRoads do require clubs to keep up to date the names and signatures for the club’s CPS renewals and confirmation that a member is a financial member plus the Scrutineers’ details as well. There is a specific form for this. The renewals signatories should be President, Secretary, Treasurer as they are really the only ones who would know if a member is financial or not. A club was knocked back recently as they tried to use their Property Officer.

Marlene and Russell’s 1975 LEYLAND Mini Clubman GT

The Story of a Mini Named Susie

I was born 9th September 1975 in Sydney in a factory called Zetland.

I have no memory of my early life until I was found abandoned with another Mini in Undera in a shed. The two of us were trailered home to 19 Rogers Street Kyabram to a family of people who liked small BMC and Leyland cars and vans.

There they started to strip me down to nothing and rebuild me using some parts off my blue Mini friend that they also trailered home.

They undressed me and took off all my red paint back to silver bare metal. I was found to be remarkable condition. I only needed a right-hand A panel and lots of dents removed. Then I was undercoated and locked in a shed while my new owners went on a 3-month holiday.

When they returned home, I was looked at to decide what to do with me.

They painted my body. That felt great after such a long time looking like no one cared about me. Then they renewed my suspension system, added bigger disc brakes on the front and finned aluminium drums on the rear, and adjustable height cones, replaced rear and front sub frames. Then I could roll around the shed and yard.

A bigger engine was found and overhauled and fitted with an overhauled gearbox. The man doing things to me spent a lot of time changing the shape of my cylinder head and ports and fitted larger valves so I could breathe better.

I was fitted with a large bore exhaust system to my cylinder head.

About this time, I was introduced to a friend called Myrtle, a Morrie whom was going to spend a lot of time travelling with together. Myrtle had a heart shaped exhaust tip so I spat my dummy and wanted one, so my new owner Marlene found a twin heart tip. It made my day.

My upholstery was then redone with nice Ford vinyl and cloth trims. My windows were found and fitted then a walnut dash arrived from England and fitted. A right fuel tank was found in a shed and fitted so I could run many kilometres without refueling.

All bumpers were repaired, re-chromed and refitted along with lots of chrome parts as well.

Finally, I was fitted with red rego plates and hit the road for the first time in many years. I have been to SA twice, Tassie once and been over Hotham to Bairnsdale and Warragul.

This year I have been to lots of shows and coffee runs. I have also picked up a few awards for my good looks.

As co-owners of Susie the Leyland, we get great pleasure out of her and she brings back many happy memories of other Minis and Coopers we have owned.

It has been fun restoring her. I would recommend a Mini to anyone. Best small car in the world.

Veteran Car Club Annual Rally, Wangaratta – 8th-10th November 2019 This year’s Annual Rally was to be held in Wangaratta, so I decided to drive

across for the Saturday’s tour and dinner. The start of the rally was on Friday, when the early arrivals took a short drive

out to Boorhaman to visit the Brewery. When I arrived, the cars were assembling on Batchelors Green Public Park, just

near the Gateway Motel where most were staying. There were 37 vehicles entered, including seven Ford Ts, four early Renaults and two motorcycles.

The first leg of the day’s tour was south on the old highway through Glenrowan and Winton. It was originally planned for all vehicles to do a lap of the track but unfortunately there was another event on there. I hitched a ride with the RACV back-up vehicle for this leg, which meant I stopped a few times when other entrants had troubles. Our first stop was the Benalla Aviation Museum for a look at their collection and morning tea.

The next drive was across to the Tatong Tavern for a very nice lunch. I found a spare seat in Euan and Wilga Coutts’ 1911 SCAT tourer , which motored along very nicely.

The trip back to Wangaratta was also interesting as I was a passenger in Greg Smith’s 1913 GWK . This could be described as a mid-engined two-seat roadster, which sounds very sporty, but it’s powered by a 1.1-litre two-cylinder engine and drives through a friction disc, so sporty is probably not the right word! It sat nicely on about 42mph.

The evening meal was in the restaurant at the Gateway Motel, and was very good.

Unfortunately I couldn’t stay for the Sunday run, which was to see the dredge at Eldorado and then to Milawa for lunch and a visit to the Brown Brothers Winery. Apparently everyone enjoyed themselves!

Saturday Social Day, Clubrooms – 16th November 2019We had a great turn out for our Social Get-together on Saturday November 16 and what a

beautiful spring day it was. Perfect weather for a BBQ. Thanks to John for volunteering to cook our lunch.

Many thanks to all who brought salads. So nice to have a great mix of different salads to share and enjoy. Thanks also go out to all that help set up, back up and washing up every time. We really appreciate the team effort.

So nice to see the smiling faces every month. Lots of fun and laughter and plenty of stories told. We had lots of prizes on our raffle table. Thanks to those that donated prizes also.

We had a couple of holiday reports, one from Lorraine who visited Canada and the Rockies to Alaska. There was breakfast with the bears, dog sledding and a gondola ride. Lorraine had a wonderful memorable holiday.

Grace and Les went on the Loveboat from Robinvale to Mildura, a four cabin house-boat. I heard Les witnessed how cold the water was after going for an involuntary swim. They learned that emus can swim. Thanks for sharing your memories guys.

Geelong Revival and Speed Trials – 22nd-24th November 2019We usually head to Geelong for the Revival in late November. You never

know what you might see there! A wide variety of vehicles took part in the trials, which are quarter-mile sprints

along Eastern Beach Rd near the Geelong CBD. They were first held in 1956 and quite a few famous motoring identities have attended.

This year there were very few older cars in the displays, only two veteran and not many more vintage, but there were still huge numbers overall. The Jaguar Club always has a big display and there were feature displays of Mini, Bolwell, Honda, Mad Max vehicles and performance tractors.

This year the Citroen, Renault and Peugeot clubs combined to put on a big French display, and we were keen to get there early to be part of it. Brother-in law Jason’s recent purchase, a 1922 Chenard & Walcker 3-litre, now lives in Callum’s shed so the three of us set off at 7am for the 25km trip in from Bannockburn. It travelled very nicely at about 45mph, but I think it could cruise a bit higher than that once we get used to it. (The same model did win the first Le Mans 24-hour race in 1923.) The French car display had maybe 40 cars, but ours was the oldest and the only one not from the big three – there was a trophy for that!

Progressive Lunch – Sunday 24th November 2019 This again took place after a few years missing from the calendar.

We had a good turnout of 22 cars consisting of 45 people and one young grandchild. It would have been nice to see a few more of our newer members come out to enjoy what was a great day with plenty of socialising. The weather was perfect, the food was excellent and the venues were great.

A very big thank you to the Kyabram Girls for providing soup at the start. A really big thank you to Marie and Tim Harris for allowing us to enjoy their garden and Tim’s great collection. Finally many thanks to Kris and Lloyd for allowing us to finish the day at their place.

Thanks to all the members that attended. Next year we will try and hold it earlier in the cooler weather and perhaps this will make it more comfortable to “dress up”.

On the day, Rita and Charlie did a great job and were awarded the Cam and Joan Peter Memorial Trophy –Congratulations.

The Federation of Veteran, Vintage & Classic Vehicle Clubs Inc is supporting a fund-raising program that helps breast cancer sufferers and their families by selling Little Blue Towels at Bendigo Bank branches across Victoria.

Little Blue Towels, normally discarded after a single use, are cotton towels collected from hospitals in Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT, after they have been used to dry sterilised hands. Instead of going to waste, they are laundered, packaged and recycled by employment enterprises for people with disability in Echuca, Ballarat and Kew. All proceeds raised from the sale of these recycled cotton towels at Bendigo Bank branches across the state will be gifted to The OTIS Foundation. Fast Facts: The recycled towels can be purchased from any Bendigo Bank branch across regional and metropolitan

Victoria during October, with proceeds going to The OTIS Foundation. Packs of five towels are still just $7, with 100 percent of proceeds from the sale of these recycled towels

going to the OTIS Foundation. The towels are lint, dust and grit free, absorbent and perfect for polishing cars and bikes, cleaning,

camping, golfing or fishing. The number of women and men being diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia is increasing.

Australia has one of the best breast cancer survival rates in the world. Increasing survival is due to earlier diagnosis through screening and improved treatments. More than 19,500 Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. On average, 53 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day.
