    Two of Utah's na ti ve pla nts have been o f f i c i a l l y placed on t h eEndangered g-& Threatened L i s t by the Federal Government. They are Phaceliaa rg il la c ea Atwood, and Astra galus pe ria nu s Barneby. Following i s a shor t ,i l lu s t ra te d repor t on these unique plants .

    Astragalus perianus: THREATENEDT his b e au t i fu l l i t t l e high alti-tude plant i s known from only 2 loca-t i on s above 10,000 i n th e Sevier-Pansaugunt Plateau and Tushar M t .

    areas. Possibly a survivor of anancient f l o r a which occupied Utah i nthe distant past , the Rydberg milk-vetch c l i ng s t o t h e rocky s o i l o fi t s very re s t r i c t ed habi ta t . Lowgrowing with purplish mottledin fl at ed pods, wh it ish f lowers andfolded hair covered leaves, it wasf i r s t d iscovered by Per Axel Rydbergin 1905 but he assumed it was A.serpen s. I n 1964 Rupert Barneby re-cognized it a s a new species andnamed it after Per Axel Rydberg.

    Phacel ia argi l lacea: ENDANGEREDThis su rpri sing ly love ly annual wasf i r s t d iscovered by M. E. Jones in1883 but he fa i l ed t o designate itas a new species. D r . Atwood wasworking on Phacelia when he found itagain in 1971 and named it the c layphacelia because it i s narrowlyadapted t o th e c lay s o i l on s lopesof th e Green ~ i v e r hale or mat ion.A single population i s a l l t h a tremains of th i s endemic pl an t.
