~LITZ There are few solutions in handling a blit~ by the free or strong safety.Natura11y. we can handle 1.t vith our sight adjustments. In addition. we may use a.pecia~ H.oe call to co-mpensate for a 4 lU.BU to one side rush. And naturally.we can get to the use of ex tra bloc~ers (62 --63 protection) or use a 50 check. These are .erely A fev of our thoughts.

S I G E T M>JU S 'D{EN1 'X and ZYou must find the safety to your side on all our 60 (.90 series patterns. If thesafety to your side is on a blitz. ve will sight adjust to a quick slant when thecorner is off and to a fade vs. bump and r'un , we will not sight .adjust any routewhere an inside receiver is on a flat route tc the side of the pattern. Naturally.spe cif ic cal led ro ute s viII dec lare yo ur particular adjustment vs. blitz read.

UN COVE RE D RE CE IVE R~e handle three ways:1.) 50 Audible2.) Hot call by open man with QB visually reading and making the thro~3.) Facemask signal by receiver to QB recognizing open area and making

CROSS -FACE or PERFECT POSITION - When a receiver is involved io onside pattern.a general rule applies:

If a defender crosses the receiver's face, the receiver-should break back across the defender's face.If 'on alignment, for vide receivers, tbe defender is in abump-and-run position and has turned his sboulder and hipsto the outside. The receiver has the choice to run the fade, pressure out, go, or break across defender's face to inside. If while running a vertical route the defender is in per fectposition to defend the deep throw on that course, the receivershould break back across his face to an open area.

    ADDITIONAL nOUGHTS FOR RECEIVERS

PASS R3UT INTRODUCTIONA route is n .a me d t o des cr Ibe tbe receiver' 5 final direction. or depthand dit'ec~1on at the breakpoint .A receiver .ust cballenge a defender with plan.ned m ovement as he runs aroute to ,aln an advantage at this break. You -.ay -.aneuver from yourstart to your break in .ore than one prescribed -.anner. Such. aaneuvervisualized fro~ start to break is called an Approach. When used properly. theseapproaches are the key to our main objective as a receiver - which is to breakan d C031eopeD when the quarterback is ready at the passing spot. A routeapproach is basically founded .OD B three-step weave prinCiple. It is 1ZL8deup of three segments: a release. a weave. and a break.

    BREAXPOINT

    RELEASE

STARtING POI~l AT LOS1. Stance: ~ide Receiver - 2 or 3 point, outside foot back. Analyze and

decide. As you line up on either side, make it alvays the same.2. Split: Some plays require specific splits in attempt to dictate TUn

support or coverage. When not specified, vary your split. Considerthree variables: the route. secondary alignment. and sideline.a. The split will vary according to the route and route approach.ILeave aaneuvering room in relation to sideline on outside routes.

    b. On inside routes vs. zone coverages. viden your .plit or Tourapproach to increase sl%eof zones, and to reduce ins1de coveragebelp. Read the de! ensive IU.n on the run.

    c. Alvays read t he a li gr aen t of Corner. Safety. and L Ber before tbenlAp. Look for a coverage key.

    d. Note bow the defensive back aligns and reacts when you are closeto the sideline. See if be bas a false sense of sideline security.Find tbe opponents' sideline rule.

    e. Al~ays kno~ your relative position to the tideline and end %ooelines. R.espect them but do not let them bother you when catchingtbe ball - tbe catch first.

Study the tendencies of each defensive back a nd s ec on da ry . If theygamble. quess with you. play loose or tight, inside or out. theirspeed. h~ they cover on all down and distance situations. Takepride in kno~ing how to beat them.

During the game talk to the QB and coaches when on the sideline.Tell them what you can do. what's good and bad . your best routeon 2nd and long, and your best deep pattern.

Carry out your assignment at full speed on every play. Don'tloaf because you think the pass is going to someone else. Be alertfor the ball. even though you are Dot the primary receiver. You neverltOC7\o1 when the QB ",illt.hrow to you. You rill catch more passes if youdevelop the ability to find a passing lane for the QB if he gets introuble.

    2. Wide ~ecelvers - Come off the line in one of three angles: Outdde.atralgbt. inside ..Tie t.he r elease together with your weave and break.Vary your release. Consider route. type of coverage and individualtechnique of defender.

WEAVE}. Study approach combinations. Dr~ them ..Walk them .Jog them .Run them ..2. Run every route at full speed but rela: xed and under control. We

cannot get correct timing any other vay.3. Change of direction should be a veaving fluid DOtion. Run up the

field. Dot side to side.4. The importance of the weave is its angle. This veave causes a

difference in the !ateral position between the receiver and thedefender, and thereby causes the defender to react immediately toproper alignment. This alignment with the defensive back on the laststep of the receiver's veave is the key to t~e angle the receivertakes on his break.

    5. Vs. man te chrd que+ fake the man. DOt the area. Make the fake asclose to the defender as possible. Force the man! Force him toreact. Don't let him watch you and then react. If the defenderstays in his back pedal. break off his alignment. If he turnshis body. break across his face.

    6. Push the defender vith your eyes but see his hips and feet as youweave in your approach. Try to force him off balance at the breakpOint by causing him to turn his back or cross his feet over.
