1995 TREASURER'S REPORT

Pamela Thompson

1995 Income

All national branches submitted payments in 1995, mostly in good time, although a number of supplementary payments for new and reinstated members in 1995 are still expected. Thanks are due to all national branch officers who have made great efforts to bring their membership lists up to date in the past year.

After an initial drop, caused largely by deletions from membership lists,

membership of the Association increased by 40 to 1,962 members by the end of

1995, largely through the efforts of national branches. Membership was donated to institutions in four new countries (Albania, Moldova, Tanzania, and Thailand); our member in Greece re-joined; and we were pleased to welcome members for the first time in Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, and Nigeria, as well as new members in Iceland and Russia.

Miscellaneous income, mainly from the sale of the membership list, was again good, greatly assisted by referrals from members around the world.

Interest from the UK offshore account exceeded all expectations and amounted to a return 17.9% in 1995. It is hoped that further deposits to this account will be made in the near future.

Total income for 1995 was DM 126,300.00 which was DM 5175.00 more than

projected in the budget.

1995 Expenditure

Total expenditure was DM 94,249.00. This was DM 18,451.00 less than antici

pated. Most significant payments for 1995 were made by the end of the year. Those which had not cleared appear as unpresented cheques.

Expenditure on Fontes Artis Musicae was much as expected, although a slight

delay in the production of Volume 42 No. 4 meant that the final bill (approximately $2,500.00) for 1995 arrived in 1996.

Office expenses were again kept to a minimum, although higher expenditure is

inevitable in year when ballots take place. They are otherwise not expected to

increase significantly. The costs of printing a new IAML brochure will not now be incurred until 1996.

Similarly, agreement to delay production of a new membership list, to facilitate

inclusion of telephone, fax and e-mail numbers, resulted in that expenditure being deferred until 1996.

Outreach fund/Fond für Entwicklungshilfe:

Donations to the fund continued to be received slowly but steadily, from both national branches and individuals. A grant was made for the shipment of a large consignment of music and books to Albania. No other applications were received.

DM Funds at 1.1.95 3,381.00 Receipts 1995 1,147.00

Subtotal 4,528.00 Expenditure 1995 2,735.00 Funds at 31.12.95 1,793.00

The General Assembly's agreement to devote 2.5% of the Association's income (except investment income) to outreach work from 1996 may mean that the Council will wish to re-examine the criteria by which the fund operates.

Summary

Income exceeded expenditure by DM 32,081.00, due in large measure to good interest payments, but also to cautious spending. There is no guarantee that similar patterns will emerge in coming years, so the General Assembly's decision to increase dues for institutional members by DM 9.00 (to DM 89.00) from 1997 is welcome and should ensure that the Association's reserves are not significantly depleted in the next few years.
