PGK Annual Meeting & Annual Dinner.

PGK JANUARY MEETINGThe PGK January meeting will be held on WEDNESDAY, January 17, at 17:45 pmand will be preceded by aperitifs from 17:00 pm onwards. The lecture will be held at theKTVI building, Prinsessegracht 23, The Hague. Mrs Sheila Doherty, Formerly of SOEKORwill speak about: "The success ratio of prospects delineated through sequencestratigraphic analysis - a case study of the Bredasdorp Basin, offshore SouthAfrica".

The speaker has provided the following abstract:

In 1988, a study of clastic, post-rift, Cretaceous strata in the BredasdorpBasin was undertaken to develop a sequence-stratigraphic framework that led to thedelineation of hydrocarbon fairways. Hydrocarbon plays are confined to lowstandsystems tracts which have the most favourable stratigraphic trapping and reservoirpotential. The lowstand elements targeted as prospects comprise basin floor fans whichare often deposited in deep-marine channels on type l unconformities, and slope fans andlowstand prograding wedges. No prospects were generaled in the transgressive tractswhich are generally seismically unresolveable or in the highstand tracts which are wel!developed and often sandprone, but lack traps.

During the following four years, boreholes were drilled to evaluate the hydrocarbonpotential of the Valanginian to mid-Albian sequences. Drilling results proved the deep-marine basin floor fans to be the most successful targets. Of the 31 boreholes drilled to

evaluate deepwater fan/channel complexes, 75% intersected the fans as prognosed.Sandstones with good poroperm characteristics were intersected in 75% of these fans, while 6 have commercial hydrocarbon flowrates. Boreholes drilled to test slope fansintersected the fans as predicted, but the sandstones are generally of poorer reservoirquality than the basin floor fans. Drilling results of the lowstand prograding wedges werethe least encouraging. Of the boreholes drilled to test lowstand wedges, only oneintersected shallow-water sediments which consisted mainly of claystone.

The success ratio in the basin floor fan elements of the lowstand system tracts is high andfurther exploration effort is therefore being concentrated on these deep-marinesandstones that can be identified through sequence stratigraphic analysis.
