Ralph Dorr Mitchell was born September
19, 1887 in Chicago, Illinois. He was one
of five sons of Walter Benjamin Mitchell
and Catharine Willard Gore. He graduated
from Hyde Park High School in 1908 and
attended Chicago University.
Laura Frieda Dorothy Zander was born
February 28, 1888. She was one of six
children of William August Zander and
Caroline "Carrie" Meyer of Peotone,
Illinois. Laura, a pianist, often
accompanied the Philadelphia Symphony
Orchestra during practice sessions while
they were in Chicago. Laura was educated
through the eighth grade and became a
music teacher.
While in their teens, Ralph and Laura met
while spending the summer at Lake
Beulah, Wisconsin.
They were married on April 5, 1913 in the
family home at 2014 Sheffield Avenue in
Chicago,
Illinois. They made their home in Fort
Dodge, Iowa.
Weddings and Engagements
What did I tell you girls?
The wedding of Sister Laura Zander to Brother Ralph Mitchell took place Saturday April 5,
1913, at her home 2014 Sheffield Ave. A reception was held after the ceremony to which Alpha
Chapter were invited and if I may express the feeling of the whole Sorority we never enjoyed a
wedding so much before.
Sister Laura made a beautiful bride. Her gown was of white charmuese trimmed with chantilly
lace and pearl motifs from the wedding gown of her Mother-in-Law Mrs. Mitchell. She carried a
bouquet of white sweet peas and lilies of the valley which Sister Florence King caught,
designating her the next bride.
The happy couple left for Waterloo, Ia., amid a shower of rice and old shoes for a long
Honeymoon. A telegram from the Sorority preceded them and we hope they had a nice reception
on their arrival.
The Sorority wedding gift was a chafing dish complete with fork and spoon. We have not lost a
Sister but gained a Brother and we wish them every success and happiness in the world.

A Semester in Patagonia is about learning and expanding your horizons.
The challenge takes all forms. For you, it might be keeping a smile on your face while
bushwhacking through bamboo in the rain. For some the group dynamic is the most
difficult aspect. Living and sharing yourself with a group of people for 75 days can be
more demanding than the hardest day with a pack on your back or more frustrating than
waiting for a break in the storm that will let you paddle to the next island. This is why the
group depends on the strengths of all the individual members. There is a saying "the
group is only as strong as its weakest member," yet it is also as strong as the sum of all its
parts. It is these challenges that are the basis of learning about the wonder of living in
nature and with others. There are three sections: mountain travel in the rugged Patagonia
Andes, sea kayaking in the fjords and archipelago of the southern region, and a small
group expedition.
•Hiking routes vary between 125 to 175 kilometers during the Mountain
Section.
•Sea Kayaking routes between 150 to 225 kilometers.
•Rocky shoreline and swift currents.
•Frequent off trail travel and bushwhacking.
•Snow and ice mountaineering, glacier travel.
Semester in Patagonia (per http://www.nols.edu/)
Patagonia is a geographical region as far to the south as British
Columbia is to the north. The varied topography of ice caps,
mountains, volcanoes, temperate rain forest, tundra, pampas and
coastal fjords make up the southern-most tip of Latin America,
Patagonia. Patagonia, a mythical land of fire and ice, is closer to
Antarctica that it is to Santiago, the capital of Chile.

After the tempest -- calm,
After the shadow -- light,
And the golden dawn breaks clearly
After the long, long night,
After the rain, the sunshine,
After the tears, the laughter --
And when this life is over,
Life eternal follows after.
