Welcome to our 19th Annual bull sale. Old man winter has certainly refreshed our memory on what winter can be like after spoiling us last year and I’m quite sure everyone is looking forward to spring as we are. As I sit to write this welcome its -45 wind chill, we’ve had 29 calves in past 24 hours and over 100 in last 5 days; we will have 2/3 of the calves born in the first cycle. As you thumb through the catalogue you will find why things like calving ease, vigour at birth, cows with good udders and temperaments (maternal traits) are important to us and every cattleman. Over the next few months, performance, natural thickness and ideal frame to push the scale down at weaning, yet moderate enough to keep our mature cow size on replacement females efficient under ranch conditions . Come fall, things like sound structure and eye appeal will also figure into what your calves will be worth. We have spared no expense or time over the last 40 years to source these kind of genetics to offer the product we do for commercial cattlemen. Although a hectic time of year we always look forward to bull sale time as we reacquaint with old friends and customers and meet many new cattlemen each year in search for genetics to enhance their breeding program. As cattle producers we are at the start of the most exciting and rewarding time in beef cattle history. It is a great time to own cows! SigHt UnSeen PROgRAM We would love to have you join us for our annual Bull Sale at the ranch. If you can not, this program has worked well for many busy cattlemen unable to make it to our sale. With families and a bunch of cows ourselves, we realize that with hockey, 4-H, chores, frozen water bowls, cows calving and everything else it is sometimes hard to be everywhere you want to be on certain days. Each and every year we sell more bulls through this program from clean across the country to next door neighbors. The program is simple. Call us in advance (preferably a week or so) before the sale to discuss your cowherd, breeding objectives and herd bull requirements. From what we gather from talking to you about your program, we can fit you with a herdsire or herd sires with in your price ranges and suited to your needs without you leaving home. The bulls will be personally hand picked by Lee, Dave or Jim. We are a family run operation so the same person helping you pick your bull is the same person who calves, breeds, feeds and lives with these herd bull prospects and their mothers year around. We know our cowherd very well and the genetics strength of each bull on offer. Just the same as you know yours. Almost 40 years in the bull business we have gained a level of trust and integrity with our customers and have had repeat customers buy their bulls here for years and not been to a sale yet. We will get you the best bull for your program as reasonably priced as we can - you have our word on that.

Here are a few details about our operation and why we think an MRL herd sire may work for you.

* Over 40 years in the bull business. Over 40 years we have been committed to and stuck to producing Simmental seed stock which Will work well under your commercial conditions. Easy fleshing, structurally sound beef cattle have always been #1 at MRL.*Customer Care. We will make sure you have a bull to breed your cows to. If you run into trouble, give us a call. We will have several insurance bulls at the ranch at all times and will get you a replacement bull as soon as you need one. We also have post sale delivery on offer. For those busy cattlemen unable to make it sale day, we offer a sight unseen buyers program and pre- selection program, as well as several sale consultants to leave an order with.*Quality Not Quantity. Our operation consists of over 600 working females. The 150 bulls on offer have been selected from 300 bull calves, therefore we can be very strict when selecting our offering. The toughest thing about our bull sale will be making up the sale order. Pens full of uniform 1⁄2 and 3⁄4 brothers.* Bull Development. These bulls have been developed on a high roughage, silage, grain and ground straw/hay ration plus minerals. Our objective is to offer you sound breeding bulls ready to go to work and stay working for years to come. “Stuffing” is for the “Christmas Turkey” not “breeding bulls”. All bulls are semen tested prior to the sale so there are no surprises after you buy your herd bull(s).

Terms - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location un-less satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. We reserve the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should any purchaser fail to settle for his purchase, we reserve full power to resell the animal to the best ad-vantage either publicly or privately without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released.Disputes - Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decisionin such matter is final. Purchaser’s Risk - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. We strongly recommend the purchaser insure their purchase(s) at time of purchase.Announcements - Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements. Certificate of Registry - A registration/recordation certificate issued by the Cana-dian Simmental Association.Canadian Angus Association and duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer of each animal after settlement has been made. It is the responsibility of the buyer to determine the acceptance of this certificate in any other association.

Shipping - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale but no risk is assumed by the Sales Management of Seller. See delivery information in the cata-logue.Breeder’s Guarantee - As per the Canadian Simmental Association/Canadian Angus Association Breeding Guarantee guidelines. In th event of a dispute, the sellers are responsible only to the extent of the purchase price of the said animal. We as-sume no liability, legal or otherwise, to make any further compensation to buyers. All bulls are vet inspected and sell with a breeding guarantee.Health - All bulls are under the total MRL Herd Health Program. His ears are a tick short but the quality of this outcross pedigreed red bull certainly is not. Sired by Bundi and out of our pick of the ET heifer calves at Remington a couple years back. His dam is a beautiful cow out of the OPPs cow (Dynamite Blacks dam). Pretty cool pedigree on this non dilutor red bull. This is one we’ve had our eye on all year long.

A pretty interesting herd bull here to start off the 2013 bull sale catalogue and capture the prestigious Lot 1 placing. The only red bull out of this amazing flush of our model 493U donor cow who raised our high selling red bull last year MRL Destination at $46000 to Nisku Farms. We have several calves on the ground now and they are impressive. This fella combines a total outcross pedigree for most red programs with a flawless phenotype, awesome hair, excellent temperament and a certain presence that all great breeding bulls possess. The black bulls from this flush are also impressive and the heifer calves are flat out awesome. Besides all his noticeable qualities his numbers are second to none ranking in the top end of the breed clean across the board with his calving ease number in the top 10%. An all around elite herd bull prospect we will definitely use in our program. MRL will retain 1/3 semen interest.

Homo Polled. This has been one of our favourites all summer and in the pen all winter long. He just has that presence and eye appeal about him. Moderate framed, a leg under each corner and stout made. His pedigree is also pretty cool. Bundi is almost exclusively a Homozygous black pedigree on the top side and on the bottom a Power Surge daughter out of our most famous red cow ever the 431N donor cow. She of course is the dam to MRL Cyclone $37000, MRL Storm herd bull here at MRL, MRL Heritage $17000 at Come AS U R, MRL Pro Bowl $14500 to Traxinger and M & J in the Dakotas, as well as grandam to our high selling black bull MRL Integrity at $48000to Ashworths, just to mention a few. This fellas mom 763W will carry on the torch as we will flush her this spring. A pretty neat young herd bull prospect here that might get lost in the shuffle with all the credentials to back him up. His dam raised a ¾ brother last year that was one of the feature red bulls going to Hebert Livestock Ventures top commercial operation. This fella by Hammer is very similar with impressive performance numbers. Our 443N donor cow shows up top and bottom in his pedigree as well as the 662J donor cow. Top cow families raise predictable breeding bulls. One of the younger bulls in the pen and one you won’t want to overlook.


Power in the blood! Of all of the top breeding bulls we have sold over the years, these 2 ET brothers may stack up more credentials than any. Their pedigree which would be considered outcross genetics for most programs and yet plenty proven and predictable. Their sire Stubby certainly needs no introduction in Canada. His progeny both male and female have set records through sale rings across the country last fall and spring and his dam would be regarded one of Lewis Farms most elite donor cows. On the bottom side of the pedigree is what will set these individuals apart from the pack. His dam and grandam were the pair we displayed at Agribition a few years back that created quite a stir in the barn from top breeders from coast to coast and as far south as Texas commenting and trying to buy one of the two. Some things are just not for sale at any price. This is a powerful cow family, super nice fronted and abundance of volume and impeccable udder quality. The 477U cow, her dam the 863S cow and a maternal sister 470U are all headline donor cows in our program. 3 of the 4 bulls in pen 1 Last year were out of these cows. 863S raised the $38000 Seismic bull to X-T, 470U the $9000 red bull to Jean Francois Leblond PQ and 477U a Heritage son to Downhill Simmentals at $8000. The bulls themselves are impressive; super stout, dark red, very sound with an abundance of hair and testicle. If you are in the business of raising herd bulls for commercial cattlemen these guys will be worth the drive. Powerful outcross pedigree, balanced numbers and impressive individuals. A pair of bulls we will definitely use in our program. MRL retaining 1/3 semen interest.

A long bodied stout rascal here out of a dandy Red Eye daughter that raised a top Red Force bull last year to Grant Toews. A bull here that will add pounds to a set of calves. Twin.

A dark red son of WFL Indentiy the high selling Redge son for Westways out of the productive 598P cow. Same cow family as Lot 33.

A son of the $20000 high selling red bull from 2011 doing a fantastic job for the progressive herd of Come As U R Simmentals. A powerful red performance bull here that combines our 2 top red cow families top and bottom in his pedigree. On the top our 431N donor cow and the bottom the 632P female a maternal sister to our 863S donor and 470U donor cows that raised the $38000 seismic bull to XT and $9000 red bull to Jean Francois Leblond respectively in last year’s sale. When we purchased Red Western for $25000 this is what we had in mind; low bw bulls that will grow and outstanding maternal values. Just 84lbs and almost 800lbs the end of August. He combines two of the very top Curve bending calving ease bulls in the business today top and bottom in his pedigree. His dam being one of those outstanding Red Force daughters that are ideal mother cows. We get dozens of calls each and every spring from commercial cowboys looking for herd bulls with the credentials and numbers like this. We have certainly been listening to our customers and trying to produce the product that works in the real world. Real good red blaze bull here.

Here’s a red blaze Curve Bender. Moderate bw and top end of the breed for performance numbers. These Western bulls are ideally suited for commercial cowboys. This is a dandy with strong Fleckvieh genetics on the bottom side.

These red blaze bulls are getting harder to find and especially of this quality. This fella combines the breeding prowess of Red Force with one of our premiere full blood cow families. Another powerhouse by Predator and goes back to our super 440N Mr. Beef cow family. His dam the 380T female is one of our most elite young Edition daughters. She raised a top bull for Bob and Brian Wilson her first try and has a Black Bear and Power Surge daughter that are top females in their calving group. A black calving ease prospect here that would probably work well on heifers. He ranks in the top 3% of the breed for calving ease and bw and ranks very high for milk. Here’s one of the top full blood bulls we have raised in a long while. The Justified progeny are impressive and this cow family is super solid. His dam raised a bull for Herb and Gail Berner last year. She has done a bang up job again this year weaning this fella at 900 lbs the end of August. A definite headliner in the strongest group of full blood bulls we have offered. The cow family has been one that has showed up in our top full blood cattle for years at MRL. His dam had a highlight Sargeant heifer in our fall female sale going to Tim Jackson and the grandam has herd bulls working at Ken-Ray Ranch and Wilson Colony. This fella, just like his sire, is so well balanced, a ton of rib shape and muscle and that presence of a herd bull. Full blood bulls with this breeding and quality are certainly hard to find. One of the top Angus herd sire prospects we have offered for sale. His sire Warden has done a terrific job siring sons with eye appeal, stoutness, hair and overall balance and volume. We purchased him in partnership with T-K Ranch as the lead off bull from the well known –El program for $25000 the high selling red Angus bull in Canada in 2010 and he has proved to be worth every cent. On the dams side of the pedigree one of our most prolific cow families. This young prospect is one we have had our eye on all along and continues to develop with age. His dam is a cow we will flush this spring, she has certainly earned her way into our donor pen and one of our most elite Angus cows. She is the dam to MRLA Stroh 73T who sired many of our lead off bulls the past few years and was our high selling bull himself back in 08 going to top operation in North Dakota of Dean Stroh. This fellas full sister was the top Angus heifer calf in the pen last spring for sure. This fella puts it all together and one we considered keeping for our program. Just 88 lbs at birth and ranks in the top 10% of the breed for performance numbers.

This 61X sire group are a heck of a set of calving ease bulls. Here’s a ¾ brother to the Lot 145 bull. This fellas grandam is the dam of that feature bull. A herd bull here that would work in the heifer pen or on a mature group of cows.

We were extremely high on his sire when we sold him as our high seller in 2011 to Windy Hill Livestock and are definitely proud of the awesome set of calves he has sired. Low birth, calving ease bulls with substance, eye appeal and the ability to grow. Add another great cow family on the dams side of this fella for an elite heifer bull. His dam had the powerful black bull in the pen last year that was highly sought after.

Here’s our heifer to represent the 67X sire group. He was our high selling red bull in 2011 doing a whale of a job for Come As U R Simmentals. Boys here’s one you could have a lot of fun with. She would look pretty sharp on the end of a halter next summer and fall and more importantly has the credentials to become a super productive mother cow. Her sire Outlaw was our high selling bull in 2011 to Herter Simmentals at $23500 and the few calves we’ve had are dandys and on the bottom one of those Power Surge daughters. To top it all off a white blaze right down the middle of her face. She won’t be hard to find in the pen.

The Predator progeny have been the talk of the town last spring at bull sale and again this fall with females. His genetics are exclusive to the Predator group and no semen has sold and maybe never will be. His progeny have topped every major sale they have been a part of. Awesome cow family here and I’m not sure how we let this happen but same as Lots 156 & 157 as well. This is a sweetheart and one we will miss.

As you can see by the pedigrees on the bulls in the sale these Black Edition female can raise em. They are fantastic cows. This one will be no different out of very strong maternal lineage. Same cow family here as the awesome black heifer Lot 156 and also Lot 160.

A rare opportunity here and one of the flat out features of the event. We have not parted with many Power Surge females to date and are to the point where we may never again. The ones we have sold have topped every sale and have average about $20000 including the record setting bred at Shades last year at $47000. On the bottom side back to our super productive 19C cow family that has raised several. A full sister to the grandam raised the high selling female at Shades for $10000 to TSN and our high selling bull in ’07. Heifers like this should never leave and will surely be missed but we always dig deep for our heifer lineup in the spring sale as they also represent the bull offering. Here’s a sweetheart. As good as the bulls are in the Western group we think the big strength to his breeding prowess will be in his females. Every top herd bull must have a great mother. The dam is a powerful Red Bravado cow that we acquired through the Shades sale from Downhill Simmentals out of a dandy MRL female he acquired out of this very sale. Awesome pedigree and a super fronted, broody female that will for sure be a front pasture cow

A powerful Storm daughter here that will raise herd bulls. A red baldy lining up our greatest red and full blood sires and cow families in her pedigree.

We have offered three elite Western females for his first year. Grab onto one because we won’t part with many down the road. This one offers outcross genetics on the bottom side. His dam raised a top end Red Force son last year to Dean Wandler in North Dakota.

This is one of my favourites in this powerful group of heifers. Our number base allows us to dig really deep and offer some of our front end females every year. A cherry red Bundi daughter with exceptional depth and style as do all the Bundi progeny. If this wasn’t a share female she would not be for sale. Powerful, nice uddered, dark red cow as her dam that always gets the job done. We have always stacked the lineup in the spring heifer offering but we have went overboard for 2013.

We’ve tried to enter a heifer out of all of our major sires to the bull sale to show the consistency of our herd bull lineup. Here’s a dandy by the First Choice bull we own with Ashworth Farm and Ranch and has done a whale of a job on his first calf crop. Our top cow families top and bottom on her pedigree. Another young female here that will mature into a powerful cow.
