Visual Arts Mr. Ivie Sketchbook Prompts San Fernando Middle School Spring 2017 100 SKETCHBOOK Prompts You must complete 20 of these prompts with your best effort. That’s about 1 drawing per week in class or for homework. Each prompt will be graded on the 4 C’s: *Creativity -Is your artwork unique, imaginative, or well thought out? *Craftsmanship -Is your artwork clean, neat, and presentable? Did you add lots of detail, shading, etc.? *Criteria -Did you follow the directions? Did your drawing fit within the given prompt? *Concentration -Does the drawing look complete? 100 SKETCHBOOK PromptsYou must complete 20 of these prompts with your best effort. That’s about 1 drawing per week in class or for homework. Each prompt will be graded on the 4 C’s:*Creativity -Is your artwork unique, imaginative, or well thought out?

2-SuperheroDesign and name your own superhero (see #3 for extension)

4-Magazine Cut out Choose an image (or more, then one) from a magazine, cut it out nicely and glue to the paper. Use that image to inspire a complete drawing.

5- Skateboard design Draw a blank skateboard (Top and bottom side) and design.

6- Facial Feature Practice Cut out different facial features from a magazine and practice drawing them realistically next to the image.

7-Multiple Views of an objectMake 4 or more boxes on your paper and choose one object to draw front different views with lots of detail.

8- Micrograph Create an image using words (or one word over and over)

9- Surreal Object Draw an object realistically and then draw the same object turned into something “Surreal” or dream-like.

10- Dream DrawingIllustrate a dream that you remember with lots of detail.

11- Hand drawing Position your non-dominant hand in an interesting way and draw it as realistically as possible.

12-Blob challengeHave a friend draw a random shape in your sketchbook. Turn that shape into a complete drawing.

13-Inspired by NatureGo outside and create a detailed drawing inspired by your surroundings

14-Look upLook up…draw what you see with every detail

15-Look downSee #14...but instead look down!

16-Architecture Choose a building that you love and draw it with as much detail as you can.

17-Inspired by MusicListen to a song repeatedly and draw what you think that song would look like as you listen (abstract or realistic)

18-Transportation of the FutureWhat will our transportation look like in the future (car, bus, plane...etc.)

19-WordsCut out a word from a magazine, letter, newspaper...anywhere! Glue it down and design a drawing based on that word.

20-Childhood ToyDraw a favorite toy from your childhood with as much detail as possible.

21-Portrait of an important personAsk a close friend or family member to pose for a portrait.

22-Song LyricsIllustrate your favorite song lyrics

23-PoemWrite or paste down a poem that inspires you and draw an image around it that illustrates the poem.

24-Comic consCut out part of a comic from the newspaper, paste it into your sketchbook, and add boxes to the end or beginning to add to the story.

25-Utensil stencil Trace a utensil or two (fork, knife, spoon) onto your paper and turn them into a drawing of some kind.

26- Happiest MemoryCreate a drawing inspired by your happiest memory

27-Favorite colorCreate a drawing using only your favorite color

28- Through a WindowChoose a window to look out of and draw what you see.

29-Animal Human MashupDraw people with animal bodies…. or animals with people bodies.

30-Fashion Designer Design a line of clothing.

31-Shoe DesignerDesign a brand-new shoe

32-HairDraw hair...a lot of it.

33-Based on a photoTake a picture of someone you love without them noticing and draw from the photo.

34-Musical AnimalDraw an animal playing a musical instrument

35- Close-up InsectFind an image of an insect (something really small) and draw it large with all the detail you can see that you may not have noticed before.

36- Pile of dishesDraw a pile of dishes (may want to look from a photo)

37- Refrigerator Still LifeOpen your refrigerator, take a photo, and draw a still life from the photo.

38-Through the looking glassDraw an object looking through glass (vase, water in a glass, jar…)

39-ShadowDraw something that includes an interesting shadow. You may have to play around with the light (use a desk lamp or candle).

40-Bite out of Still LifeDraw the stages of you eating something like an apple (whole, with a bite out, more…)

41-Mona who?Draw the Mona Lisa in a creative way.

75-Bridged Design the most popular new bridge over the Kaw River in Lawrence. Something worthy of a million selfies.

76-Invisible SkeletonDraw the imaginary skeleton of an object that doesn't have a skeleton (for example; an apple, banana, milk carton, pillow…anything you can think of).

77-Mystaircase Draw a mysterious staircase or doorway.

78-Cartoon MEDraw a cartoon version (caricature) of yourself or of someone you know.

79-New to MeChoose an object that you have never looked closely at before (like a stapler for example). Drawing things help you see them better. Make a few detailed drawings of that object.

80-Forms Practice drawing 3Dimensional forms with realistic shadows. Fill the page with them and then add to the drawing in an interesting way. Here is a resource.

81-FallingCreate a drawing of a person falling. The background can be up to you.

82-Merging Animals Create a new animal that includes parts of two or three different animals.

83-One Liners Create drawings of things using only one continuous line OR create an entire drawing using only one line. Click here for inspiration/lesson

84-Nature StudiesCollect some objects on a walk outside. Place them on white paper with a light shining on them to get interesting shadows. Draw fast and with lots of texture and detail.

85-Watercolor WashesFill a page with washes of watercolor, let dry, and draw on top.

86-Charcoal ExplorationExperiment with different types of charcoal and then create a final drawing

87-Chalk Pastel Explore with chalk pastels (soft pastels). Blend colors together, drawing from observation with them, create a background and seal it to draw on top.

88-Cutouts Use an exacto knife (ask first :) to cut out designs and shapes from the sketchbook paper. Create a drawing on the page underneath or complete a different prompt and see what it looks like with the cutouts on top.

89-Torn Paper CollageUse torn paper (tissue, scrap box, rice paper, newspaper…) to inspire a drawing. Glue paper down and let dry first before drawing on top or around.
