ants Symons and Gibson and Lieutenant and Quartermaster Audus: The staff includes Sergeant-Major Deanes, Quartermaster·Sergeant Wolland, Staff-Sergeant Carnell and Sergeant Lovegrove. The camp itself is comprised of a marquee, a store tent, four officers' tents and four tents for the men. To these must be added twelve hospital (bell) tents, with other hygienic and culinary paraphernalia necessary to a standing camp.

" After having carefully planned and pitched our various sections, it was discovered that a mistake had occurred with regard to our allotment, and accordingly we moved our quarters, gaining extra practice in laying out and erecting the different tents of our establishment in so doing. With the completion of all arrangements calcnlated to meet the exigencies of our inclement clime, let us turn to matters of greater import to ourselves and to the brigade in general, that is to say, the medical and hygiEmic responsibility of a fairly large fighting unit. After an early breakfast commences the general routine of the day. Medical inspection at 8.30 occupies a good part of the morning, the less serious cases, of which there are not a 'few, being seen to at once in the surgery, the more serious being detained for careful observation and possible transference to the permanent hospitals at Aldershot and Longmoor. At present six tents are utilised as medical, wards, one of these being a detention ward, the whole under the care of Lieutenant Symons. The remaining six tents, including a'detention tent, act as surgical wards, in charge of Lieutenant Gibson. The entire medical and surgical establishment is under the supervision of Major F. Smith. Besides this there are men for extension of service to be examined, soldiers under award to be returned as fit or otherwise, scabies and infectious cases to be carefully isolated, eyesight to be tested for various officers'and men proceeding to Bisley, and on Saturday mornings the medical inspection of two entire battalions to be carried out by each of the junior officers. The hygienic arrangements are those usually carried out under' field conditions. In connection with this branch. however, it may be of interest to mention that Mr. Symons bas constructed a simple destructor a short distance from the camp. It consists of a circular wall, two feet high, built out of sods, and lined with disused tins. At one extremity is a splay mouth facing the prevailing wind. Into this contrivance all manner of refuse is emptied, which, on being ignited, smoulders night and day, even as a 'sacred fire,' being fed by its votaries in the many sections of the camp. Apropos of the hygiene of a large camp, one can only appreciate the immensity of the problem to be confronted by actual and personal experience, when the feebleness of text. book dogmas will be fully realised. It is not only our own meagre allotment that must be kept at a standard of perfectiou, but the larger areas, such as the battalion camps -there being four here besides the Army Service Corps-must be supervised and inspected. Beyond these duties there are at present organised classes for instruction in stretcher drill and hygiene, the latter including a class for officers of the brigade.

" In conclusion one must not forget the trials of long and arduous field days and night attacks, which crop up week by week. ,The night work especially strikes one, being both instructive and interesting. One such, carried out on Wednesday, July 11, will serve to illustrate such operations. The brigade marched out at 3.45 p.m. in the direction of Weaver's Down, where they came into touch with an enemy posted along the ridge. The iBfantry accordingly spread out in formation of attack, while the ambulances and hospital procede9, by road to ,a position east of Longmoor. From here' one could observe part of the operations-,the short rushes carried out by lines of khakiclad figures until the crest of the ridge was won. Here, however, the attack was stayed by the strong works beyond, and the troops settled down to dig themselves in and prepare for the next assault at dawn. Throughout the night the weary work went forward. At 11.30 p.m. a message arrived from the General Officer Commanding to the Medical Officer in Charge. The left of the line formed by the Hampshires reported many casualties, and, in accordance with orders, the stretcher divisions went up the hill, up and up, into the dark unknown. till long lines' of silent figures, digging as though for dear life, impeded further advance. Here the wounded were discovered after much trouble and very careful searching, specification tallies showing the nature of the wound in each case. Treatment was ably carried out by the bearers, and the patients helped or carried down to the waggons, which had been despatched to the foot of the bill, and so on to the dressing station. At dawn a volley from the centre of the line gave the signal for the final charge, and once again the stretchers came into requisition. An inspection of all the troops present,by the General Officer Commanding, brought active operations to a close. The work of our Corps on the whole was well carried out. The men displayed the greatest energy and intelligence in bandaging and caring for the wounded, and considering the difficulty of the task, carried out as it was in darkness and on strange ground, midst silent lines of toiling men and flashing signals,

NOTES FROM DEYONPORT DISTRICT.-Captain R J. Blackham, RA.M.C., writes (Oct.ober 29, 1906): ,. Lieutenant-C.ol.onel Caldwell delivered a very interesting. and instructive lecture at the War C.ourse C.ollege, Dev.onp.ort, .on the' Hygiene .of Active Service.' The subject was well treated by the lecturer, and the military and naval .officers wh.o had the privilege .of attending c.ould net have failed t.o have picked up· many useful hints. C.ol.onel Caldwell p.ointed .out, in the first place, that there was ne mystery ab.out the' Hygiene .of Active Service,' it was just the same as the hygiene .of .ordinary life applied t.o the special necessities .of a campaign. He divided his remarks under five headings :-(1) Water; (2) feed; (3) cl.othing; (4) disp.osal.of refuse; (5) preventi.on.of disease. In c.onsidering the subject.of water C.ol.onel Caldwell described the.vari.ous meth.ods .of purificati.on, and p.ointed .out their advantages and defects. He adv.ocated the F.orbes-Waterh.ouse apparatus fer b.oiling. With reference t.o feeds,. C.ol.onel Caldwell invited the attenti.on .of c.ombatant .officers t.o the advantages .of s.oup as an article.of diet in the field, and sh.owed that, in his experience, these advantages had net been appreciated in the past. He adv.ocated the .occasi.onal use .of alc.oh.ol .on service, and p.ointed .out hew a General might .occasi.onally enable his s.oldiers t.o draw an .overdraft .on the bank .of life by the judicieus use .of this pDwerful drug. Cel.onel Caldwell went int.o the subject .of clething very judicieusly, and peinted .out the uses and abuses .of cett.on and we.ol. He made s.ome very practical remarks en the washing .of w.oel articles, which sh.ould be .of great general interest, and suggested the replacement .of khaki drill by light flannel in the Tr.opics. Passing te the questien .of disp.osal .of refuse, the lecturer pointed .out the evils resulting frem the use .of deep trenches, and the dangers .of the se-called dry-earth system. He referred to his well·knewn experiments en the development .of the .ova .of flies in dry earth, and advocated the additien .of fluid to all receptacles fer excreta, as flies do net develop when the soil is kept meist. Under the heading .of preventien .of disease Colenel Caldwell advecated the immediate segregatien .of the sick frem the healthy, and strongly recemmended that the Medical Service sheuld be provided with its .own transpert as the first step t.o' precuring this desideratum. He str.ongly adv.ocated the general ad.optien .of typh.oid ineCl;lati.on, and preduced simple and cenvincing statistics t.o pr.ove the utility .of this meth.od .of preventing disease. Cel.onel Caldwell's lecture was delivered extemp.ore,. and witheut netes, but he never hesitated fer a w.ord.

"Majer·General Sir J.ohn Leach, K.C.B., R.C.V.O., G.O.C., Plym.onth Defences, in pr.oposing a vete .of thanks te the lecturer, peinted .out that a few years age combatant .officers held the epinien that matters .of hygiene were purely medical tDpics, and, as such, .only .of interest te medical .officers, but new all that was changed, and' commanding .officers fully realised that it was little use spending time and meney training their men unless they underst.o.od s.omething .of keeping them fit when they had them trained. He c.ommended C.ol.onel Caldwell's lectures t.o· the careful censiderati.on .of all .officers, and p.ointed .out that sanitary kn.owledge such as C.ol.onel Caldwell had inculcated might be .of infinite importance tD an .officer c.ommanding an .oUtpDSt in war, and far away fr.om mEldical advice and assistance .

. "CDIDnel G. D. Bourke, Administrative Medical Officer, made a short speech amplifying C.oIDnel Caldwell's remarks .on the value .of anti-typheid ineculatien by further statistics and details.

" The usual quarterly meeting .of the Military Medical Officers' Library and Seciety was held .on Octeber 5. Maj.or Wright was able t.o rep.ort a very satisfactory financial p.ositi.on, and, in c.onsequence, it was decided t.o reduce the subscription fer .officers: under field rank fr.om feur shillings te three shillings per mensem. .

" The Officers' Beek Club in cennectien with the Library is a great been t.o all, as it enables us to .obtain the latest medical and scientific boeks menthly in return fer .our .ordinary library subscriptien.

" The H.ospital Tennis Club has been weund up; as we have bec.ome regimental subscribers t.o the St.oke Tennis Club, and .officers are new able to get as much tennis as they can pessibly want .on the excellent ceurts .of this clnb.

"The Plymeuth Medical Society, which, next t.o the Medical S.ociety .of L.ond.on, is the eldest seciety.of the kind in the kingd.om, has cenferred hen.ours .on the Naval and Military Medical Services here by electing C.olenel G. Deputy-Iuspector-General Kellett, R.N., members of the Council. This Society has an ,excellent library, and holds clinical meetings fortnightly.

" Officers serving in the West Country are pleased to know that the Annual Meeting of the British Medical Association is to be at Exeter next year. Colonel Bourke has been appointed Vice-President in the Section of Hygiene, and Lieutenant-Colonel Caldwell has received a similar distinction in the Section of Tropical Medicine.

"The subject appointed for the winter essay of officers under field rank in this diHtrict is 'Protozoa and Disease.' This is a subject of much magnitude, but the reading up of journals which is necessitated, as there is no up-to-date book on the subject, is bound to be very beneficial to the writers of papers."

NOTES FROM WOOLWICH.-Captain T. Matthews, R.A.M.C., writes (October 23, 1906): "We have had a fairly successful cricket season at Woolwich this summer, having played sixteen matches, of which nine have been won, four lost, two drawn, and one abandoned owing to rain. Four Inter-Company matches have been played, two against the Depot, and two against the London Company; of the former we have won one and lost one, while we won both the games against Millbank. LieutenantColonel White, Captains Churton and Barrow, and Private Cook have been most successful with the bat, and Privates .T enkins and Haynes have taken most of the wickets. Captain Wood has not played regularly, but on the occasions cin which he has been available he has bowled with great effect. The return match against a strong side of the 5th Rifle Brigade was quite the best game of the season. It was played on the Academy Ground. Our opponents won the toss, and going in first on a perfect wicket made 207, to which we replied with 158 for seven wickets after playing until a quarter to seven to try and finish the game. The team was seen to least advantage in the return match at Aldershot against the Depot. We had quite a good side as regards batting and bowling, but somehow we went to pieces in both departments of the game and were easily beaten, the form shown being in marked contrast to the first game, when we beat the Depot at Woolwich simply and solely by thorough good fielding. On this occasion seven out of the ten Dep6t wickets fell to catches-not a single chance being missed.

"Since the last communication from Woolwich, there have been several changes in the personnel. Lieutenant-Colonel W. Babtie, V.C., C.M.G., has taken over the duties of Administrative Medical Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel J. S. Davidson' has been appointed Registrar and Secretary, and Lieutenant-Colonel M. O'D .. Braddell has taken over charge of the Auxiliary Hospital.

" The foothall season has now commenced, and as we have a very good team, it is hoped that it may be as successful as the cricket season."

NOTES FROM BLOEMFONTEIN.-Major S. F. Clark, R.A.M.C., writes (October 6, 1906) :-" The South African Medical Congress met here last week, and we all took an active part in its affairs, attending both the discussions and the social functions that occurred. We were' At Home' during a' First Aid' display by our own men and by the St. John Ambulance Brigade of the Colony-the Governor, the General Officer in Command, the Mayor of the town, and many other notabilities being present. The display was a very good one, and reflected great credit on Lieutenant and Quartermaster H. Spackman, Chief Superintendent of the Bloemfontein Corps, who was in charge of the proceedings, and who had taken much trouble to ensure the success that attended the event. Lieutenant-Colonel R. Porter was on the executive committee of the Congress, and worked hard in the interests of the meeting. At the banquet the important toast of 'the Government of the Colony' was entrusted to him. Lieutenant-Colonel Risk contributed a paper on the Treatment of Post· Enteric Thrombosis by Citric Acid, while Major Clark read two papers, presided over the section of Public Health, and served on a committee appointed to consider the question of tuberculosis in South Africa. The Congress was a great success, and steps were taken towards improving the organisation of the profession in this country."

NOTES FROM MALTA.-Major C. E. Pollock, R.A.M.C., writes (November 9, 1906) :-" The cricket season closed last month, and the averages of the Royal Army Medical Corps team ara appended. Our successes hardly reached the level of our expectations. The whole side played up well on most occasions, thougb the fielding at times might have been improved upon. Our failure to get further than the semi-finals in the Governor's cup was a surprise to most people. With the bat LanceCorporal J ohnson, Private Fish and Captain Kennedy were most successful, but Private McCaig's average is not so high as might be expected. We have gained a good bowler in Pegram, and hope that his successes this year will stimulate him to do even better

next season. Captain Kennedy also did good work in most of our matches as a bowler, and Sergeant Lampard, as a change bowler, saved the situation on more than one occasion. Private Darby bowled well all through the season, and his average gives no idea of the value his hard work was to his side. Our cricket in Malta has suffered a great loss with the departure of Oaptain Kennedy: his efforts were invaluable not only as a player but also as a captain and an organiser, and bis place will be bard to fill. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season: President of the Recreation Committee, Captain E. Ryan; Hon. Captain of the football team, Lieutenant P. A. Lloyd.J ones, Hon. Captain of tbe hockey team, Lieutenant F. E. Roberts.

" At the October Royal Army Medical Corps Officers' meeting an interesting discussion followed a paper read by Captain Anderson on 'Para-typhoid.' Tbe general conclusion arrived at was that, up to tbe present, the clinical signs of the two diseases are too much alike to permit of any distinction being drawn between them, while the dangers (bremorrbage, perforation) are identical, and in fact tbe only real difference is in tbe serum reaction, which is of greater interest to tbe pathologist tban to tbe physician.

" The Royal Army Medical Corps in Malta have suffered a considerable loss, from a scient(fic aspect as well as the sporting one, in the depa.rture of Captain J. C. Kennedy, who left this island' tour-expired' last month. Oaptain Kennedy was the oldest Royal Army Medical Corps inhabitant, and a prominent member of the Mediterranean Fever Oommission. He was always ready to give us his help when any doubtful serum reaction worried the clinician, while in pursuit of the fever-infected goat he was untiring-more so, indeed, than the Maltese goat-keeper altogether appreciated. Before his departure Oaptain Kennedy was entertained at dinner by all the officers of the Royal Army Medical Oorps. Oolonel J ennings, our Acting Principal Medical Officer, proposed Oaptain Kennedy'S health and wished him 'Good-bye and Good Luck' in a neat and humorous speech, to which Captain Kennedy replied in a suitable manner, duly expressing his regret at leaving Malta.

" Oolonel MacNeece, our Principal Medical Officer, and Major Fleury have returned from leave. Lieutenant-Uolonel H. M. Sloggett has had another wave of Mediterranean fever, and will not return to us for some time.

"At the November Royal Army Medical Oorps Officers' meeting a proposal was carried to offer the use of the library to our colleagues of the Naval Medical Service for purposes of reference .

.. The hot weather of 1906 has proved to be agreeably healthy and cool. Our scourge, Mediterranean fever, let us off very lightly, for which we are all extremely grateful. No doubt much will be written in explanation of this fact, and will in due course appear in the Journal."

REGISTER FOR INDIAN SERVANTS. FEW officers on going to India have not experienced the difficulty of getting good

servants. The discomforts on arrival and of a long journey up country, unprovided with a bearer, or, what is worse, provided with a hastily selected man, taken haphazard from the crowd of indifferent or bad characters who congregate in Bombay, bave fallen to the lot of most of us, whilst the period of trial and vexatiou until a proper staff of servants is secured is familiar to us all.

In our Oorps, with regular aunual reliefs, it should not be difficult to arrange for an interchange. Officers leaving India would then be able to provide places for the good and tried retainers they are relinquishing, and new arrivals would, by taking on these men, be spared many of the worries and troubles which now befall them. Further, good servants would not be lost to the Oorps, and the prospects of continuous employment could not fail to have attraction for the better class of men.

With these ends in view, officers due home from India are requested to communicate to the Journal particulars of servauts whom they cau recommend, so that officers going out in relief may have an opportunity of securing these men. The particula.rs required are :-

(1) Class of servant. (2) Whether for bachelor or married officer. (3) District or station to which he belongs. (4) Any special recommendations. NOTE.-The da.te the officer leaves India should also be stated, and when and where

the servant will be available. Oaptain K. H. Reed, R.A.M.O., Nowgong, Oentral India, sends particulars of his

late bearer, who is, at present, ont of employment-Jomb Khan_ (1) Bearer and khitmahghar. (2)--(3) Allahabad. (4) Oaptain Reed thoroughly recommends him. Will do both bearer's and khit

mahgar's work. Wages, Rs. 16 p. m. Is a good cook and used to camp work, &c. Age about 28. Oaste, Hiudustani Mussulman.

Address-274, Bukshi Bazaar, Allahabad City, India.

BA.rrCH DINNER_

The members of the July, 1881, batch dined together at the Oafe Monico, on Saturday, October 20. The following officers were present: Oolonel F. J. Lambkin, LieutenantOolonels A. l\L Davies, W. Babtie, V.O., R. I. D. Hackett,O. W. S. Magrath, R. F. O'Bden, G. T. Trewman, E. M. Wilson aud Major S. H. Oreogh.

Letters of regret were read from nearly all the absent members, and it was agreed to continue the dinner, which has now been established some years, annually, as a pleasant way of meeting old friends, and to notify the fact in the JOURNAL in case other batches may wish to follow suit.

It is proposed to meet at the same place on the third Th7trsday in October next. A reminder will be sent to all members in the course of next year.

ROYAL SCHOOL ~OR THE DAUGHTERS OF OFFICERS, BATH.

DECEMBER AND JUNE ELECTIONS, 1906 AND 1907.

Votes are earnestly solicited for Eileen Stella Oassidy, aged 10 years on June 27, 1906, only daughter of the late Surgeon·Oaptain Ohristopher OIemons Oassidy, LM.S., 1st Sikhs, who was treacherously shot, together with Oolonel Bunny and three other officers, on June 10, 1897, at Maizar Tochi Valley, and succumbed from wounds then received on June 22, 1897, aged 32 years, leaving his wife and two children in straitened circumstances.

This case is strongly recommended by Field-Marshal Right Hon. Earl Roberts, V.C., K.G., K.P., &c.; General Sir Alfred Gaselee, G.C.LE., K.O.B.; Surgeon-General Sir Alfred Keogh, K.O.B.; Major-General Sir F. J. Goldsmid, K.O.S.L, O.B.; Sir Philip Hutchins, K.C.S.L (Member of Viceregal Oouncil of India at the time of the occurrence); Oaptain Sir Brook Kay, Bart.; Colonel O. H. Stoddart (Retired Indian Staff).

ARMY MEDICAL OFFICERS' WIDOWS' AND ORPHANS' FUND.

The attention of Medical Officers is invited to the revised rules of the above Society, which are now in force.

The Fund was instituted in the year 1816 to enable Medical Officers in the Army to make some provision for their widows in addition to the small pension which might be awarded to them under the terms of the Royal Warrant. For many years subscription to the Fund was compulsory, and for a long period after subscription became voluntary the large proportion of Medical Officers in the Army belonged. In this way the foundation of a Fund was laid which now amounts to the large total of £125,000, after £250,000 has been paid out in benefits.

Of late years the Fund has fallen into disfavour, and the number of Officers joining has been dwindling. The falling off in the number of subscribers has probably been due to two main causes: (1) A want of knowledge of the existence and working of the Fund, and (2) a lack of appreciation of the benefits derived by subscribers.

To these must be added the general change of views as to the contingencies against which a prudent man should insure, and the increasingly high rate of subscription for new members, which, on the advice of the actuary, had been within recent years imposed. A further deterrent, which increased in force as the number of men' joining on first entering the service diminished, was the large sum of money to be paid down on entrance by members wishing to join later, made up of back subscriptions, marriage fine and disparity of age fine. .

To remedy the increasing disinclination to join the Society, the Oommittee set itself resolutely to revise the conditions governing entrance and subscription. Acting under the advice of a distinguished actuary, highly skilled and experienced in this class of work, the rules have been entirely recast. The annuity, which formerly lapsed on the death of the widow, has been extended to the surviving children until the youngest attains the age of 21 years. This is a most valuable addition to the benefits. The marriage fine and the disparity of age fine have been abolished, thus doing away with the payment of a lump sum down on joining; and a revised table of subscriptions has been adopted, dependent only on the respective ages of the husband and wife at the date of entrance. The rates compare favourably with those of any Insurance Company for the same benefits. The subscriptions of bachelor members are taken into account when %,!sessing their rates on married members.

If all officers of the Oorps, as in olden days, joined the Society, the distressing cases, which now occasionally happen, of widows and orphans of Army Medical Officers being left destitute and dependent on charitable contributions, would cease. It is earnestly hoped that officers will realise the splendid legacy left them as the result of the exertions of their forerunners in the Service, that they will study the rules which are

THE ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS i FUND. THE TWENTy-SEVENTH MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE .

. The Twenty-seventh Meeting of the Committee was held at 68, Victoria Street, S. W., on Friday, November 16, 1906, at 4.30 p.m.

Present. Surgeon. General Sir Alfred Keogh, K.C.B., Director.General, A.M.S. Surgeon. General Sir Charles McD. Cuffe, K.C.B. } Representing Lieutenant·Colonel E. M. Wilson, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O. Retired Lieutentant·Colonel A. B. Cottell Officers. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir James Ulark, Bart. . Colonel A. T. Sloggett, C.M.G. Colonel H. E. R. James. Major H. C. Thurston, C,M.G. Major C. G. Spencer. Captain H. R. Bateman. Captain and Quartermaster A. Bruce.

Minutes. (1) The Minutes of the Twenty-Sixth Meeting were confirmed. . (2) The Committee considered the question of Auditors for the Fund Accounts for

the seven months ending on December 31, 1906. The Honorary Secretary asked that a professional Auditor might be appointed for. these Accounts, as he would be handing them over on completion of the next Audit. The Committee gave authority for the employment of a firm of Accountants to audit the Accounts as above.

(3) The Committee decided that photographs should be taken of the "V.C." pictures, and that each possessor of the "V.C." or his representative might be presented with a copy of the picture proper to himself. The Committee further decided that such Officers as desired to possess copies of the" V.C." pictures should be entitled to purchase them from the Commandant of the Royal Army Medical College, who agreed to make the neccessary arrangements.

(4) With reference to Minute 6 of the last Meeting the Secretary of the Union Jack Club has intimated that the Council of that Club has decided to place brass plates on the door of each room bearing the name of the bed-room, that the Council is now making arrangements for these plates, and that consequently the provision of shields with designation would not be proceeded with ..

(5) The sum of 15 guineas has been paid for another "V.C." picture-Surgeon Landon at Majuba Hill.

(6) The sum of 12s. 6d. has been presented to the General Relief Fund from the Fund for the Memorial of No. 7 General Hospital, South African Field Force.

(7) The following sums have been received for the General Relief Fund:-No. 1 and Depot Companies, R.A.M.C. Regimental Insti-

tute, Aldershot.. .. £52 10 0 No. 16 Company Regimental Institute 4 0 0

(8) Major C. W. Reilly wrote suggesting that in large stations a local secretary might be appointed, "or some officer who would take an especial interest in Corps matters, and who would' round up' other officers and bring such matters to their notice." He considered that neglect through inadvertence to subscribe to the various Funds might by such means be prevented.

Thc Committee desired that Principal Medical Officers should be consulted as to the advisability of taking some such step as that proposed by Major Reilly. The matter had already been discussed at the Twenty.sixth Meeting, when Minutes 4 and 7 were passed. It appeared to the Committee that it was desirable to have in each district some officer who would personally interest himself in the R.A.M.C. Fund, and who would be of especial use in matters connected with the administration of General Relief.

(9) In accordance with the decision contained in Minute 4 of the last meeting, Major Thurston has handed over his imprest account to Major J. Girvin, who will act on behalf of the Principal Medical Officer, London District.

B. SKINNER, Lieutenant-Colonel, November 19, 1906. Hon. Secretary. NOTE.-The sum of £5 contributed by the R.A.M.C. Detachment at Valletta, and

shown in the Accounts for the period ended November 30, 1905, was inadvertently omitted from the list of subscriptions to the General Relief Fund, published on page 119 of the CORPS NEWS for November, 1906.
