PART A DO YOU KNOW THE REGION YOU LIVE IN?

1. TULA REGION

Tula Region was founded on September 26 in 1937. It covers 25700 sguare

kilometres. It is one of the central regions in Russia. Ryazan, Lipetsk, Oryol and Kaluga

regions are very close to Tula region. Tula region’s population is about 1 800 000

people.

Our region is famous for plants and factories. But most of all we are proud of the

famous people who were born here.

Everyone knows the name of one of the greatest writers in the world L.N. Tolstoy.

He lived and worked not far from Tula in Yashaya Polyana. Now his house has become

a museum and many people visit it every year.

Another world-wide known person is V. D. Polenov. The talented artist comes

from Tula region too. The poet Zhukovsky, the writer Veresaev, the composer

Dargomizhsky, politicians, sportsmen and even popular singers were born here.

Besides, 250 people from Tula region have been awarded the titles of the heroes of the

Soviet Union.

There are plenty of places to visit here. For example, the state historical museum

“Kulikovo Field”, the museum of L.N. Tolstoy “Yasnaya Polyana”, the museum of the

artist V. D. Polenov, the palace of Count Bobrinsky in Bogoroditsk. If you’re fond of

literature, history, nature you should visit these places.

There are 21 towns in Tula region. They are big and small, old and young, but all

of them are nice and interesting in there own way.

The symbols of Tula Region are the samovar, different kinds of arms, the pryanik

(gingerbread in English).

The battle on Kulikovo Field in 1380 is very important for the history of Russia, as

it was the greatest victory of her people.

I’m very proud of living in Tula Region.

Let’s talk.

1. Ask your friends questions about the size, population and location of Tula region.

2. Where can a visitor of our region go to learn about the history and culture of

Russia?

3. Which symbols of Tula region are unique?

2. KULIKOVO FIELD

N. Konchalovskaya

It happened in September 1380. Russia was in great danger, because the Tartars

had conquered our country.

The Prince Dmitriy decided to give a battle to Mamay. He chose the field near the

settlements of Tula and Kolomna. The famous Russian saint Sergey Radonezhsky

blessed the Prince and his army.

On the eighth of September 1380 the famous battle began. It was the greatest fight

between the Russian and Tartar armies. The Russian soldiers were ready to die but not

to move back. They fought for the independence of their country.

The famous battle of Kulikovo Field was the first Great Victory of the Russian

people.

Now there’s a monument to the soldiers in Kulikovo Field. It is a tall column with

a golden top. The monument was made from guns and arms which the French army left

in Russian fields in the war of 1812. Many people visit the Kulikovo Field every year,

as it has become a famous historical landmark.

Let’s talk.

1. What books about Kulikovo Field do you know? Which of them have you read?

2. What would you tell your soldiers if you were the prince Dmitri?

3. YASNAYA POLYANA

One of the Russian geniuses in literature and philosophy is Lev Tolstoy. We are

proud that he was born in Tula Region. Lev Nikolaevich wrote books which are still

read all over the world, such as “War and Peace”, “Anna Karenina”, “Sevastopol

Stories”, many stories for children.

Lev Nikolaevich worked and lived in Yasnaya Polyana from 1856 to 1910. He

organized a school for the village children there. Tolstoy was impressed by the nature of

Yasnaya Polyana and couldn’t imagine his life without it.

Yasnay Polyana is a state museum of literature now. It is a wonderful place, where

everything tells you about the national culture, the beauty of nature and the amazing

talent of its owner. The writer’s house, the gardens, the parks, the woods are connected

with Tolstoy’s life and work. In the house you can see many old interesting things:

furniture, books, mirrors, pianos, portraits and family relics.

Let’s talk.

1. Have you ever visited this place?

If you have, what did you like most of all there?

5. TULA

Tula is the capital of my region. It’s a year older than Moscow is.

The old Russian chronicles first mentioned Tula in 1146. Like Moscow

and other old Russian towns, it has the Kremlin. There are a lot of

museums such as the Museum of Arms, the Museum of Samovars, the

Museum of Tula Pryaniks in the center of the city.

There are the City Drama Theatre, the City Philarmonia Hall, the Children Theatre,

cinemas, cafes, bars, restaurants where you can spend an evening.

The Central Park of Culture in Tula is one of the best in Russia. The first trees

there were planted in 1895. Now the Central Park is a wonderful place for sports and

rest.

Tula is a city of students, with its famous Polytechnical and Pedagogical

universities. All in all, there are six institutes of higher education and many colleges.

That is why you can choose any school you like.

The population of the main city of Tula region is about 571,8 thousand people, who

work at various plants and factories. One of the oldest is the Plant of Arms “Arsenal”

and it’s not a secret that Tula has been the armory of Russia for centuries. Tula has been

very important for Russia since its foundation and it was part of Moscow Region from

1708 to 1777, when it was made the capital of the region again.

Tula is an important transport centre: it has two railway stations, one bus station,

the system of public transportation - trams, trolleybuses and buses. It even used to have

an airport.

A lot of children and grown-ups from the region have visited Tula circus, where

wonderful performances are staged. Have you ever been there? If you haven’t, you

should do it as soon as possible!

Let’s talk.

1. Why do you think there are Kremlins in old Russian towns?

2. Why is Tula important both for Russia and for our region?

8

6. NOVOMOSKOVSK

We live in Novomoskovsk. It’s the second largest town in the region

after Tula. Novomoskovsk was founded in 1930 and it has changed its

name three times during its history. First it was called Bobriki, then

Stalinogorsk and in 1961 it became Novomoskovsk. Our town was part

of Moscow region from 1942 to 1957.

Now Novomoskovsk is a modern industrial city with the population of about 150

thousand people. It’s easily found on every map, because Novomoskovsk has its own

special location: at the beginning of the great Russian river Don. The town is situated

between the Don and the Shat, another river.

Novomoskovsk is located 230 kilometres south of Moscow and it takes about three

hours to get to the capital by car or by bus.

Novomoskovsk was founded with the construction of new chemical plants during

the years of the first 5-year plans. Now there are three huge plants: “Azot”, “Orgsintez”,

“Bytkhim”. That is why my native town is famous for its different chemical

productions. Besides, in Novomoskovsk and the surrounding area there are 26 big

plants.

Sport takes a very important place in the town life. Adults and kids can attend a

modern swimming pool. We also have a stadium, where football matches of the first

league are held. Our football team “Don” plays there. In winter we can enjoy skating on

different ice-rinks and skiing in the parks. There is even a specialized college of

physical education and a track-and-field school for kids. In addition, we have many

sport clubs and sections, where people can play such games as volleyball, basketball,

football and table tennis, do karate, gymnastics and other sports.

Many children like to spend their free time attending clubs and sections in two

palaces of culture. Sometimes pop singers, famous bards and other musicians visit our

town and we enjoy their performances.

We are glad to have the “Pobeda” cinema and the Drama theatre. All the pupils of

our gymnasium go there to see interesting films and performances.

Novomoskovsk is a young town but we have our own City Museum and Exhibition

Hall. There you can learn a lot about the town’s history and see many beautiful

paintings and works of art.

If you ask me what season is best to visit Novomoskovsk, I won’t be able to tell

you, because it is remarkable in summer and winter, spring and autumn. We’re proud to

have a great number of beautiful flowerbeds with many-colored plants. Many people

like to sit around the city’s three fountains and relax. But it is not only parks and

fountains that make cities beautiful. Once I saw an ad in a street, which said: “It is

people who make our town beautiful”, and I think it’s true.

During New Year and Christmas everyone goes to Soviet Square to watch the

beauty of our magic New Year tree. Many people say that the main heroine of the

holidays is much more beautiful than even New Year trees in Moscow and other main

cities.

Can you add any other information about our home town?

Let’s talk.

1. Do you attend any sports or culture facilities of our town?

2. What is your favourite place in Novomoskovsk?

7. THE PROBLEM OF THE WATER IN THE REGION

Many years ago it was very important for people to live near water. The builders of

our town also took into account the existence of water in the region. People need water

every day, and so do plants. That’s why people made the Shat, Pron and the Lubovka

water reservoirs.

The Aselok, the Belokolodez, the Bobrik, the Kamenka, the Olkhovka, the

Orlovka, the Pron are the rivers flowing in our area. But the most famous is the Don.

Earlier it was called the Tanais. The Don flows into the Azov Sea. The beginning of the

river - its source - is protected by the state now. It looks marvellous, with the monument

nearby and the paved area with benches for people to sit on.

10

Page 12: 1maslova-nv.ucoz.ru/_ld/0/6__Free-Time-colo.doc  · Web viewA READER FOR 5-7 GRADES. Novomoskovsk 2002 Автор благодарит Владимира, Виталия, Максима

We also have a spring in Klin, the

southern part of the town, which many people

call “holy” water. It is really a unique natural

stream.

Finally, we should mention water

reservoirs, made by people - pools in the

children park, where kids and adults enjoy

spending a warm evening.

Let’s talk.

1. When do people of our town go to the Klin stream?

8. DO YOU KNOW THIS LEGEND?

You know that the source of the Don is the main landmark of Novomoskovsk. But

have you heard the legend about Ivan-Lake and the Don and the Shat rivers? It goes like

this.

The old Ivan – Lake had two sons: the Don Ivanovich and the Shat Ivanovich. The

brothers were very different. The oldest, Don, was quiet and tender, restrained

(сдержанный) and obedient (послушный), unlike his hot-tempered (вспыльчивый)

and indomitable (неукротимый) brother Shat.

The father loved both sons. Unfortunately, he fell ill and became blind. The Shat

Ivanovich decided to leave his father and home. But the old Ivan-Lake knew his sons’

arms. The Don’s arm was strong and hairy, but the Shat’s arm was thin and smooth. The

youngest brother cheated: putting a fir-coat on, he asked his blind father if he could go

around the world. The old man couldn’t see but he touched the Shat’s arm and let him

travel. The Shat Ivanovich was very glad and went north. But he wasn’t able to go far

because Ivan – Lake found out the lie, became very angry and directed his son into the

turbid (мутный) waters of the Upa river. That was the end of the Shat.

The Don Ivanovich slowly went south and reached the Azov Sea after his father’s

death.

9. NOVOMOSKOVSK AND THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR

June 22, 1941 became a tragedy for all the citizens of Russia. It was the beginning

of the Great Patriotic War. Men went to fight against the fascist soldiers. Around eight

thousand of our fellowmen (земляки) were killed.

The plants and factories produced the goods for the front. The people worked hard.

They were ready to do everything they could.

On November 25, 1941 fascists captured (захватили) Novomoskovsk in spite of

the selflessness of our town’s defenders. The enemies killed the town’s people, burned

their houses. In December General

Belov and his soldiers set the town free

with the help of the famous Russian

weapon “Katyusha”. One of them sank

in Ivan Lake. On November 25, 1988 it

was found, pulled out, restored and

mounted near the City Museum.

Unfortunately the damage done by

the war was great. Schools, hospitals,

houses and apartment buildings were

destroyed. But the people of the city worked and believed in the victory.

Twenty-eight thousand people left Novomoskovsk to fight at the front. Many of

them were given medals and orders. Twenty-three citizens of our town are the heroes of

the Soviet Union, three have been decorated with the Order of Glory, one person has

become the Hero of Russia.

Let’s talk.

1. Why does one of the streets in our town was named Generala Belova street?

2. Did anybody from your family fight at the Great Patriotic War? Was he or she

given any award?

12

Page 14: 1maslova-nv.ucoz.ru/_ld/0/6__Free-Time-colo.doc  · Web viewA READER FOR 5-7 GRADES. Novomoskovsk 2002 Автор благодарит Владимира, Виталия, Максима

10. THE MONUMENTS OF OUR TOWN

Novomoskovsk is a young town, but it has several monuments. The monuments are

not only the decoration of our streets and parks, they also tell us about the history of the

town and its cultural development.

Some monuments are

connected with the Great

Patriotic War. A lot of people

were killed from 1941 to 1945,

but no one has been forgotten.

That’s why we have the

monument of “Eternal Glory”

(“Вечная Слава”) in

Moskovskaya Street. We are

also proud of the sad beauty of

the “Mass Grave” (“Братская могила”) in Urvanka forest. There’s a famous Russian

weapon “Katyusha” in front of our museum. People put these monuments to pay tribute

to the courageous defenders of Novomoskovsk.

Our town is also decorated with the monuments to outstanding personalities of

Russia: to the great poet A.S. Pushkin, to the Prince Dmitriy Donskoy, who led the

Russians on Kulikovo Field, to the commander of the famous ship “Varyag” V.Ph.

Rudnev.

As the Don starts in our town, there is a sculptural composition, which symbolizes

it, and it is really beautiful.

Let’s talk.

1. What is your favourite monument in Novomoskovsk?

2. Can you describe any monuments of our town?

13

Page 15: 1maslova-nv.ucoz.ru/_ld/0/6__Free-Time-colo.doc  · Web viewA READER FOR 5-7 GRADES. Novomoskovsk 2002 Автор благодарит Владимира, Виталия, Максима

3. EDUCATION IN NOVOMOSKOVSK

Children study in twenty schools of Novomoskovsk. The schools are different:

small and big, old and new, ordinary and specialised, but all of them have high-qualified

teachers, who provide good education. That is why 40% of our school-leavers pass their

exams to institutes and universities. Around 100 graduates out of 1000 finish schools

with honours (gold and silver medals).

Besides, there is an art school, two music schools, a sport school and even a school

devoted to Pushkin’s studies.

The students of technical colleges of our

town become builders, workers, seamstresses

(швеи), electricians, nurses, musicians or

coaches. As you can see, the choice of

occupations is very wide.

If you want to get higher education, you

can study at the chemical university named

after D. I. Mendeleyev or at many branches of

other Russian universities.

The biggest university in our town is the chemical-technological one, as

Novomoskovsk is a modern industrial centre. Now there are nine departments with

4000 students in the university.

Let’s talk.

1. Do you know where your parents studied?

2. What profession are you interested in? Where would you like to go after leaving

school?

№ 9A LETTER ABOUT YOUR TOWN

Read Nastya’s letter about her native town. Compare Nastya’s native town and the

place where you live. What is the same? What is different?

Dear Cathy,Thank you for your letter. You asked me to write more about the

place where I live. I was born in Irkutsk and I love it very much. I l ive in a district

called Academgorodock. This part of Irkutsk is quite small; there is a forest nearby and a lot of scientific institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. During summer cows and sheep walk in front of my house, so I sometimes feel that I l ive in a village.

The rest of Irkutsk looks like a modern city. There’s State University, the Academy of Economics and Medical University. The Angara flows through our town. This is a very wide river, which flows out of Baikal, the largest and the most beautiful lake in Russia. There’re some wonderful places to swim in and sunbathe on the banks of the Angara. My native town is a very beautiful place and it is very important to me. Would you like to come and stay next summer?

Lots of love,Nastya.

№ 6A STORY BY L. N. TOLSTOY

Have you seen any nature miracles in your life?

Diamonds.

If you go for a walk on a sunny summer morning, you can find diamonds on the grass

in the fields. All the diamonds shine in the sun and play yellow, red and blue. Coming

closer you’ll see that it’s just some dewdrops in the triangular leaves.

A leaf of such grass is like velvet, that’s why dewdrops can’t make a plant

wet.

When you take a leaf with a dewdrop carelessly, the droplet disappears very quickly.

I used to pick such “cups” and drink the dewdrops. They were much tastier than any other

drinks.

Make a true/false test on the text.
