Multi-stakeholder participation in ISO’s workMulti-stakeholder participation in ISO’s work

Open participation

Participation in ISO is open on a non-discriminatory basis to all countries of the world

All ISO member bodies have equal rights of participation at the policy development level and at every stage of standards development, adoption of standards and dissemination of adopted standards

National delegation and National enquiry

ISO members are committed to organizing participation in ISO's technical work through national delegations that represent a balance of interests reflecting the technological, economic and public interest conditions in the country

A key right and responsibility for each ISO member concerns the organization of national input during the enquiry stage – prior to the approval of ISO’s normative documents

Transparency, impartiality and consensus

The ISO process is based on procedures designed to take account of the views of all parties and to reconcile any conflicting arguments

ISO members are committed to respect the results of ISO's consensus building processes, i.e. that an ISO normative document is approved when there is an absence of sustained opposition by any important part of the concerned interests

ISO relevance for the Energy sectorISO relevance for the Energy sector

International Standards have given and continue to give an important contribution to the Energy sector

helping to enhance the safety of industry operations, assure quality, allow for variety control and interoperability, reduce waste and achieve significant cost savings

helping to improve production, products, processes and networks, and to speed-up market acceptance

ISO has published 670 standards for the Energy sector and, at June 2006, had over 200 active work items

ISO cooperation with IEA (2)ISO cooperation with IEA (2)

ISO and IEA agree that International Standards are a key tool for disseminating new technologies and good practices, developing global markets and supporting the harmonization of government policies on energy efficiency and renewable sources on a global scale

The two organizations are willing to cooperate with a view to:

refining the portfolio analysis of International Standards relevant to these fields

identifying priorities that can be shared by public authorities, the private sector and societal stakeholders

performing a gap analysis and providing recommendations to standards experts on high-priority areas that can be covered by International Standards

Energy Management and Auditing standardsEnergy Management and Auditing standards

The theme of Energy Management standards has been debated informally in ISO but work has not been proposed yet

ISO is well aware of national standards covering the subject and following developments in the field (regional projects, bilateral/multilateral cooperation) – recognizing that most documents are compatible with the ISO management systems “model”

ISO welcomes the UNIDO initiative and looks forward to support in the most suitable way proposals from ISO members and recommendations from international organizations to initiate international standardization activities on the subject
