A DUTCH DJ is set to have live SNAKE CHARMERS on stage during his set. Sander van Doorn, headlining Colours WinterParty 2010 at Glasgow’s Arches on Boxing Day, is planning to bring two snakes into the venue as part of his Dusk Till Doorn concept show. A Colours spokeswoman said: “This is the first time that any DJ has incorporated live animals as part of a DJ set at the venue. We expect it’s one of the strangest requests Health and Safety have had in a while.” Q Tickets are £25. Visit colours.co.uk. GORDON TAIT SNAKES & SANDERS KIWI quintet The Naked And Famous are planning to conquer the world. The indie outfit have already topped the singles and album charts in New Zealand . . . and they want to repeat their success globally. And they’re off to a blistering start after being named in the recent BBC Sound of 2011 poll, which has previously picked out big names like Adele, 50 Cent, Mika and Ellie Goulding. Singer Alisa Xayalith said: “We’re still getting used to news filtering through, being on the BBC list was pretty crazy. “Our single Young Blood has its own little legs and started walking around, it went viral. “People latched on to it on the other side of the world. It’s been old-fashioned word of mouth but via the internet. “We didn’t have any push or a record label, it did its thing and we just watched it happen, it was crazy. The best thing is that people are genuinely discovering new music. “We look after New Zealand and Australia ourselves. “We’ve always been like that, we paid for the album on our own and produced it. “We did bring out a couple of EPs in 2008 on an indie label but we learnt the ropes and saw it’s not hard to manage yourself. “So we got to the point where we outgrew that label and took it into our own hands.” They recorded Young Blood in a tiny wee studio tucked under a run-down Bollywood cinema in Auckland. But it didn’t turn the band into celebrities and that’s something they’re planning NOT to change — despite being massively hyped up. Alisa, 24, said: “There isn’t much home-grown stuff here. “When we went to No1 every- one was in uproar as we’re an alternative band. It’s usually Rihanna or Katy Perry dominat- ing but everyone was saying how amazing it was to see a band that people believed in up there. “It doesn’t change what we do — it was just a nice surprise.” Another thing that’s stunned the band was that they’ve already got a Scots fan base. Favourite Some hardy punters travelled down to see them at a recent one-off gig in Manchester. And shows here next year are a definite, after album Passive Me, Aggressive You is released in the UK. The band are relocating to Lon- don next year and Alisa said: “I’m itching to see the touring plans for 2011. Our manager is Scottish so there’s no way you guys will not be seeing us. “One of our favourite bands is from Scotland actually, Frightened Rabbit. We’ve been listening to them for the last few years. “Hopefully we can make our mark like they’ve done.” Q See thenakedand famous.com BY CHRIS SWEENEY ONES2WATCH ONES2WATCH The Naked truth NEW MUSIC NEW MUSIC WHEN WILL I BE FAMOUS . . . band are tipped for success WHO: Marko Kelly (lead vocals/ keyboards/guitar), Rosie McClune (bass/keyboards/vocals), Gordon McNeil (drums/vocals/production).
