Your free guide to what’s happening where and when!

Black History Month was established in the USA by Dr Carter G Woodson, a black American historian who created a month (February) for African American people to have the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge themselves and their achievements. In England, Black History Month was first celebrated in October 1987 (30 years ago), in African Jubilee year, as part of a drive to improve racial harmony in London. It has since grown to encompass the whole country and to recognise and embrace the contributions and traditions of other black communities.

I WelcomeA Magnum Photographic Exhibition in Association with Amnesty InternationalRISC, 35-39 London Street: Tuesday-Thursday, 11am-11pmFriday-Saturday, 11am-1amSunday, 4.40pm-10.30pmReading Central Library:Monday, wednesday, friday and saturday, 10am-5pmtuesday and thursday, 10am-7pm

The thirty evocative panels in the ‘I Welcome’ exhibition tell a big story of the global refugee crisis, spanning 70 years, starting with the aftermath of the Second World War.

At the end of 2015, more than 65 million people had been forced to flee their homes because of armed conflict and persecution. No one wants to take responsibility, but solutions exist and can be found starting with the international community sharing responsibility more equally. Our governments must act, and we can all do something to help.

Reading’s Slave LinksRISC, 35-39 London Street: Tuesday-Thursday, 11am-11pmFriday-Saturday, 11am-1amSunday, 4.40pm-10.30pm

The exhibition uncovers some of Reading’s links with the transatlantic slave trade, the campaign for it’s abolition and it’s long-lived aftermath. Today, large, well-established African and Caribbean communities live here.

As we explore Reading’s involvement and the impact on our town’s development, it’s people and prosperity, we seek not only to commemorate the connections amongst us, but also to raise awareness of modern forms of slavery and injustice.
