MESSAGE FROM the CHAIRMAN - James a. GIBBS The year 2017 will mark the 100th Anniversary of the AAPG, and the 50th Anniversary of the AAPG Foundation. Thanks to generous contributions from donors such as you and your companies, the Foundation has grown in asset value and significance as it has served students and professionals in the geosciences. At the end of the fiscal year 2016, the Foundation’s asset value was $48.2 million, $45.8 million of which was in the investment portfolio. Disbursements during the year in grants and awards were almost $1.9 million.

This Annual Report provides a snapshot of the array of activities and programs of the Foundation, all to fulfil the mission statement of supporting educational, charitable and scientific objectives that benefit the profession and the general public. Please take time to read it through. As you do, we hope you will feel pride, excitement and perhaps a bit of a challenge as to how to become involved in its activities.

As a part of the work of the Foundation trustees this year, plans are being laid for the next 50 years. We’ll assume that the portfolio can continue to grow, programs can be expanded and new ones added, and more students and professionals can be served. More contributions of time and volunteer service will be required. Please consider how you can help.

One of our goals will be to expand the number of Trustee Associates, the group of loyal and supportive individuals who have been willing to make a financial pledge or contribution to the Foundation, to be paid over a five-year period. Information about becoming a Trustee Associate can be obtained from the Foundation office.

MESSAGE FROM the executive director - DAVID K. CURTISSMilestones are markers in time and space. In the physical world they actually mark one-mile distances along highways and byways. In time they mark major events in our lives — birthdays, weddings, anniversaries — and alert us to stop, take a breath and contemplate the event we’re remembering.

As Chairman Gibbs mentioned, both the AAPG Foundation and the AAPG are celebrating milestones in 2017. Since 1967 the AAPG Foundation has committed to supporting scientific, educational and other charitable endeavors to promote, advance and support the geosciences.

In these pages you’ll read about the many tremendous programs and initiatives that the AAPG Foundation is supporting thanks to your generous financial and volunteer support. The span is far reaching; the impact is significant. But much work remains to be done as the AAPG Foundation celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2017.

It’s a part of being human that each of us wants to leave our own mark on the world. Working together to support AAPG Foundation programs is a significant way to do just that, today and into the future.

5

We appreciate all who have been part of our story for the past fifty years.

Let’s work together to ensure 50 more years of advancement in the science we love!

L. Austin Weeks Memorial MedalWilliam E. Gipson is the ninth recipient of the AAPG Foundation’s highest award, the L. Austin Weeks Memorial Medal, given in recognition for extraordinary philanthropy and service directed to advance the mission of the AAPG Foundation.

Gipson’s philanthropy and service to the Foundation began more than 40 years ago with his first gift to the Foundation. In 1977, Gipson became a Founding Member of the Trustee Associates.

This University of Texas at Austin graduate could not have known at the time how he would demonstrate the purpose of the group through his lifetime of service to the Foundation.

In 1996 Gipson was appointed as a Regular Member of the Members of the Corporation, and in 2006 he was elected as a Trustee, a position he held for 16 years. During his time as Trustee, he provided leadership and guidance as treasurer and as chair to the Foundation Audit Committee.

Gipson’s philanthropic legacy has provided support for a variety of Foundation program over the years. In 2008 Gipson established the William E. Gipson Named Grant as part of the Foundation’s Grants-in-Aid program, establishing a lasting tribute to his character by providing grants to graduate students for years to come.

Chairman’s AwardThe Chairman’s Award is given to recognize persons who have made extraordinary contributions to the AAPG Foundation, while calling attention to the role and value of the Foundation. The 2016 recipient is Donald A. O’Nesky.

O’Nesky has certainly met the qualifications for this award. He joined the AAPG staff in 1978 after retiring from the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel. In 1985 he was appointed as deputy executive director of the AAPG and the Foundation, and in 1997 was appointed executive director of the Foundation, where he served until 1999.

O’Nesky joined the Trustee Associates, taking an active role in the organization by regularly attending the meetings and serving as vice chair in 2009 and chair in 2012. He continued his service to the Foundation as a member of the Members of the Corporation and member of the Fundraising Advisory Committee.

The Foundation turned to O’Nesky for assistance with the development of the Deana and Paul Strunk Military Veterans Scholarship Program. His background provided the beneficial knowledge and leadership skills required to make the program a reality. He served two terms as chair of the Military Veterans Scholarship Committee, which oversees the selection of the scholarship recipients on an annual basis.

Distinguished Lecture ProgramThe Distinguished Lecture program is one of the Foundation’s most prestigious programs, conducted jointly with AAPG. The program offers lectures from respected scientific leaders who voluntarily share their knowledge and promote pertinent geoscience topics to students and geoscience professionals worldwide. In 2016, 11 lecturers gave 87 lectures in six countries, at multiple universities and geological societies.

Funding is provided through the Distinguished Lecture Fund, Allan P. Bennison Distinguished Lecturer Fund, Haas-Pratt Distinguished Lecture Fund, Dean A. McGee Distinguished Lecture Fund, J. Ben Carsey Distinguished Lecture Fund and the Roy M. Huffington Distinguished Lecture Fund.

MICHEL T. Halbouty LecturerTim Dodson, Statoil, Norway, was selected as the Halbouty Lecturer. His presentation, “Bay du Nord: A Bold Chase for Oil in a Harsh Frontier Basin,” was given at the AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition in Calgary, Alta.

The Halbouty Lecture, an annual highlight at ACE, deals with wildcat exploration — especially in parts of the world where areas of major discoveries might contribute significantly to petroleum reserves, or space exploration, where astrological knowledge would further mankind’s ability to develop resources on earth and in our solar system. The lecture is named after its benefactor, Michel T. Halbouty, an American geologist, petroleum engineer and wildcatter.

This project contains interviews with more than 55 of the world's top explorers, research geologists and professors who have pioneered geology and exploration over the past 60 years.

Rock Stars: Pioneering Women in Petroleum GeologyThe AAPG Foundation gives a heartfelt thanks to Robbie Gries who spearheaded and researched this documentary, written and produced by AAPG Administration and Programs Director Vern Stefanic, which chronicles five eras of amazing women who made (and are continuing to make) hugely significant contributions to the science and profession of petroleum geology.

GeoLegendsThese interviews are intended to preserve their contributions to the petroleum industry for posterity and to be used as educational tools for AAPG membership, future geoscientists (high school and university students), the geoscience community and the public.

Visit geolegends.com to view these important videos.

Funding, in part, for this project was provided through the L. Austin Weeks Memorial Fund. It is worth noting that more than a third of the geoscientists interviewed have played an important role in the AAPG Foundation’s fundraising efforts and governance.

Preserving History, Sharing KnowledgeIn celebration of AAPG’s 100th Anniversary the AAPG Foundation provided grants from the L. Austin Weeks Memorial Fund to fund two film projects aimed at preserving history and sharing knowledge.

25

Earth Science WeekSince 1998, Earth Science Week has emerged as the geoscience community’s leading public awareness campaign and 2016 was the most successful year so far, reaching more than 50 million people. More than 14,000 toolkits promoting geoscience awareness were distributed to educational institutions, government agencies and other organizations, including AAPG student chapters and science educators who all view Earth Science Week as a credible source of information and resources.

The AAPG Foundation is proud to be part of this AGI program and provided support to the program through grants from L. Austin Weeks Memorial and General Funds.

GeoFORCE TexasSince 2005, GeoForce Texas, an outreach program of the University of Texas at Austin, has designed to encouraged high school students in rural southwest Texas to take on the challenges of a rigorous a math and science curriculum in pursuit of higher education with the goal of entering the high-tech geoscience workforce.

In the past 10 years, more than 1,500 students have achieved valuable field experience and knowledge of the energy industry through a curriculum that builds upon itself each year.

This four-year program gets students into the field to study rocks beginning with the sedimentary processes, before moving on to studying layered rocks and geologic time. In the final two years, the program focuses on volcanic rocks, structural geology and metamorphic rocks. After graduation, mentoring continues into college. The L. Austin Weeks Memorial Fund provided funding for the grant.

Trustee Associates Service AwardRichard A. Baile was selected as the 2016 Trustee Associates Service Award recipient for his long-term involvement in the Trustee Associates in furtherance of fulfilling the mission of the AAPG Foundation.

Rick Fritz shares, “Dick Baile is one of the most respected businessmen in our industry. He is a unifier and a strong voice and supporter for both the AAPG and SEG foundations. He continues to be a great supporter of the Trustee Associates, and I cannot think of anyone who deserves this service award more than Dick.”

This WWII veteran and graduate of the University of Central Missouri began his support of the AAPG Foundation by joining the Trustee Associates in 1980. Dick’s consistent attendance at meetings provides invaluable support.

He has generously supported the Foundation through contributions in honor and memory of his colleagues and friends. When presented with Foundation fundraising needs, Dick was often one of the first to respond to the requests.

Dick has not only given monetarily to the Foundation, but graciously gave of his time to serve as a Member of the Corporation from 1977-2012.

Since 1978, the Trustee Associates have been the backbone of AAPG Foundation.

This group of distinguished contributors:

• Promotes AAPG Foundation programs and activities.
