PROJECT TITLE, PLACE - DOCUMENT TYPE PAGE 1

Peter Saville, 75Former Grenadier Guard

To us it’s familiar, the blocks and the cricket pitch and the little pavilion - the trees are still there. We had some great times in the Sergeants Mess.

I was born in Essex and joined the Guards when I was 17. I wanted to join the Navy or the RAF but the chap at the recruiting centre said – you’re a nice tall fella, you could be a Grenadier. He showed me pictures of them in bearskin and tunic, and I thought, yes, that’s for me!

Within 3 weeks I got my marching orders to report to a place called Caterham in Surrey – the Guards Depot. So I arrived there, 10 o’clock in the morning and the first thing that hit me was the walls and these big gates. The Grenadiers were in Elizabeth block. There were 34 men and we slept on the top floor. Wooden floors and this great big cast iron fire. After supper it was shining parade. You sat there cleaning your kit, trying to get all this rough brass smooth and shiny. You did 17 weeks training and for the first 6 weeks you were not allowed out of barracks. I’ve seen boys crying their eyes out - those days it really was a hell.

By the time I came back to Caterham in 1961 the Guards Depot had closed down as a training centre and they were putting battalions in there. I got de-mobbed from Caterham Barracks in 1972. I’d done 25 years by then: a silver cigarette box, that’s what they give you.

I missed the comradeship, you know, being able to go to the Sergeant’s Mess in the evening, sit down, have a chin-wag. And every week there was a big dance. Two of my old colleagues live round here, we keep in touch, see them walking past, say hello, how are you getting on.

It’s a shame the barracks has gone but they’ve done a beautiful job in there, really. I think it’s very nice. The houses are beautiful. And I’m pleased they didn’t knock any all of the main blocks down. I just hope that in years to come it doesn’t turn into a place that’s over-lived or full of rowdy children. All they need now is a cinema and a pub - then you’d have the Village finished.

But what they’ve done with the church is upsetting. You used to have all the regimental colours in there - it was gorgeous. Now it’s skateboards. Wicked. I wouldn’t go inside it, not now.

We go up to the barracks virtually every day. We walk around, drive around, use Tesco’s. We go up there shopping, take the dogs. We go to the doctor’s, and we used the vet a lot when we had our dog, Baxter. The Sergeant’s Mess - Malcolm’s place - it’s the vet’s now, where we used to socialise an awful lot.

Skaterham BoysFelix Parker (15), James Frost (18), Miguel Porcel (15)

Felix ParkerI live in Kenley. It’s in the middle of nowhere. But I’m here every day – I just come down and skateboard every day it’s open.

James FrostI grew up skating in the old skatepark in the barracks, as a little kid, and it’s just gone on from there. I used that every day it was open, for years and years. I was 12, 13 when I started and I’ve been skating in this place whenever I’m about. It’s a good park for beginners and learners and intermediates, it’s a good place to get started.

When I’m in the country I come up here all the time. I live in Warlingham but I instruct roller-blading at Camp Woodward in California. I go out to the sports camp every couple of months and help the kids out there. I don’t get paid but I get the right to stay there. It’s like the best action sports camp in the world. I’ve been running a skate shop for the past couple of years, called UKskate.com. That was in Reading but it’s now moved to Manchester, so I’ve just diversified and gone off to do other things that involve rollerblading. My outlet’s roller-blading - I just let roller-blading do the talking.

Miguel PorcelI’ve been a volunteer up here for a few years. Whenever they need a hand, I come here, and they give me free entry for the work I do. I help build ramps, if they’ve got any demos anywhere. Or if they need anything building, so we put an extension on the skate shop the other day.

I went to the old gym once but I wasn’t really into skateboarding then, but these past 2 years I’ve been up here literally every day. It’s good as a local skate park, and it is for me as I live down the road in Caterham-on-the-Hill. I enjoy the big vert ramp because the other place is up in London, so to have it down my road is really quite lucky.

We go to skate spots and they’ve been shut down just because of kids graffitting over the walls and smashing the cameras. This area is pretty bad. All the outsiders who don’t do anything, they just hang around and smoke and drink and try and fight you.

James FrostThey’ll go to a skate park and just trash it. Or start fights up there, and then we all get the blame. Say it’s an outdoor skate park that has got no supervision whatsover. All the outsiders come and trash the place, make fights or whatever. And then all the residents complain. And the council will come and have a go at us. And then they’ll end up shutting the skate park down. So that’s not very good.

Identifying ‘York-ness’ - A Urban Design Study 13

Civic Aesthetic

The Hungate redevelopment area is large enough to create its own unique identity and sense of place within the City centre. The development should

also ref lect the character of surrounding areas and buildings, including the natural environment around the River Foss Nature Reserve.

The river frontage to the west of the site and opposite Rowntree Wharf would be urban in character, with a softening and greening towards the eastern end of the site containing the River Foss Nature Reserve, overlooked by residential development including town houses.

There are a variety of architectural styles in the adjoining areas and, therefore, a range of possible design solutions. In order to ref lect this, a range of architectural styles and design solutions has been considered which could be embodied in a Design Code for the Reserved Matters or Detailed Planning Applications which would follow an Outl ine Consent.

Objective:

To create a variety of spatial experiences and activities from urban to rural along the River Foss

We have analysed the spatial sequence of the new walk along the river Foss. This route will follow the bank of the river, where it varies from natural vegetation and habitats to the east through to the urban environment to the west. Along the route there will be a number of opportunities to permeate into the new Hungate for the pedestrian and cyclist.

The sequences illustrated will provide a rich visual narrative, combining views to:

• landmark buildings• vista stoppers• denied views around curving streets• framed views between buildings towards natural and existing built features• public art• pinch points opening out into public spaces• river views • views of existing features such as Rowntree Wharf or the Minster.

photographyI take pictures like most people. Holidays, parties, special occasions, the regular stuff. I take pictures of everything, things I walk past, stuff I need to remember, even food I’ve made. I see photography as more than just an art or technique but as a valuable documentation tool.
