Adnan is a devoted amateur photographer. With his camera,(I personally do not care which camera) he has brought us many facesfrom around the globe. As the proverb says - “The one who travelsmost knows the most” so as an avid citizen of the world, Adnan hasseen more than many of us and wants to share with us what he hasseen. This is admirable. As mortal beings, we should not keep ourexperiences to ourselves, we should share them. Some of us are goodat using words to convey personal experiences and some of us are goodat using other means of communication for the same purpose. Butbeware – a photograph may sometimes tell us much more than merewords! This will become clear as you see the photographs thatAdnan has chosen to share with us. I am not only astonished to see how he finds time to pursuephotography, but I also deeply appreciate him for his passion. Add tothat some of the shots he has been able to produce, which I believewould be the envy of some of our friends who can devote all their timeto photography. The album at hand is composed of photos taken by the IFSAK member,Dr. Adnan Büyükdeniz, in the short intervals he was able to save fromhis time as a banker, who has chosen to see the world and show it to usthrough the spiritual eye of the photograph. I only hope that we willcome to see an album of his, composed of photos taken through hisjourneys for the sole purpose of photography in the very near future.fiahin Dirican‹FSAK – Istanbul Amateur Photographers and Cinematographers AssociationChairman
I had the chance to follow "The Colours of the Globe" project ofBüyükdeniz, whom I take great pleasure in knowing, from the scratch.I took part in it starting from choosing the photos until the final print. As a professional photograher, I really have to admire the time given tophotography by a person who has given the time left over from hisnormal proffession. The photographs taken from over forty countries, all of which were visited for business reasons, in the little time periodssqueezed from meetings, show us the colours of different geographies.I wait with impatience his new albums.Mustafa DilaverAdvertisement Photographer
saklamamam›z, onlar› paylaflmam›z gerekiyor.

vakti takdir etmekteyim. K›rk›n üzerinde ülkeye yapt›¤› ifl ziyaretlerinind›fl›nda arta kalan zamanlarda çekilen bu kareler, de¤iflik co¤rafyalara
ait renkleri gözler önüne seriyor. Kendisinin yeni çal›flmalar›n›sab›rs›zl›kla bekliyorum.

yat›yor. Dünyaya ç›plak gözle bak›fl›mla vizörden bak›fl›m aras›ndaister istemez bir de¤ifliklik olufluyor. En az›ndan, tüm gerçeklikler
aras›ndan siz, sadece görmek ve belgelemek istedi¤inizgerçekli¤e bak›fllar›n›z› odakl›yorsunuz.
Yeri geliyor; birçarp›kl›¤a, dengesizli¤e ve normal olmayana çevrilen bak›fllar söz
konusu olabiliyor.
Quoting Emile Zola, “If you ask me, you cannot claim to have seensomething until you have photographed it.”
My interest in photography could be attributed as a manifestation ofmy quest to see.
...The truth expressed by Robert Haas as the big irony ofphotography materializes at this point: When the photographerrecords an image that he sees with his naked eyes, he actuallyrecords what naked eyes would not be able to see. I think that
that inner breath and energy underlines this ironic truth. There isa subtle difference, which I have no control over, between my lookat the world through my bare eyes and through the viewfinder. At
the least, you focus on a portion of the reality of all that existsaround you, one which you want to see and document. And this
look at reality is not always to see the beauty or perfection. Timecomes when your look wanders to a deformity, an imbalance and
to the abnormal.

Yerkürenin RenkleriColours of the Globe
yorumlar›n›za sunman›n mutlulu¤unu yafl›yorum.
emek verip kendini infla etmelidir.”
As a banker who has set his heart on the art of
photography for 15 years, I am pleased to present my
photography album “The Colours of the Globe” for your
valueable comments just 2 years after my first book
which was published in September 2006.
During that time, my photos of the Colours of the Globe
met you at the outstanding exhibition halls like Cemal
Reflit Rey Concert Hall and the historic Haydarpafla Train
Station. During and after my exhibitions, I have been
honoured by the comments and attentions of hundreds of
“views” from a small child who for the first time visits a
photograph exhibition to masters of photography whose
art is followed by admiration. It is just this process when
photography has become a passion rather than a spare
time activity of mine which I carry out in extra times
during the meetings, conferences and seminars at my
business visits. I also started to make special programs
for photography at that time. Thus, photography has
become a way of life for me rather than a part of my life.
I feel more and more in every touch that the milestones I
passed in photography turned to passion without loosing
my amateur spirit. That feeling of progress and bringing
new sense to each frame make me feel delighted
gradually in many new ways . Photographs are getting
more value and beauty as they are shared; giving heart
and effort in photography moves you beyond pushing the
shutter button by a momentary reflex. Quoting Prof. Sabit
Kalfagil, our precious photography artist and master: “
The photographer, who needs to take a picture with a
momentary decision, has to build himself by sufficient
prior effort.”

Yerkürenin Renkleri foto¤raf albümümün ikincisi, farkl›
co¤rafyalardan, kültürlerden ve renklerden insanlar›
vizörde bir araya getirme gayretinden öte, onlar›n kendi
toplumlar› d›fl›ndakilerle karfl›laflmalar›ndan do¤an
duygusal yans›malar› ve ayn› zamanda küresel sistem
içinde yönlerini kaybetme, kimli¤inden olma ve sonuçta

Bu albümümde, benim takt›¤›m gözlüklere yenilerini

My second photography album “The Colours of the Globe”shows the emotional reflections of people arising frommeeting with other ones out of their local communitiesand the concerns of loosing direction in the globalsystem, being deprived of one’s identity and consequentlynot knowing where to belong, rather than an effort tobring them from different locations, cultures and colourstogether in the viewer.
With my warm wishes for you to add new eyeglasses to
those I wear and that each look of yours takes you to new
horizons, worlds, beauties and colours…

The album you hold in your hands is composed of shotstaken during trips I have managed to conjure of time leftover from conferences and meetings I had to attend as abanker and an economist in some 40 or so countries, timeI have availed to photography by neglecting shopping and byplaying the fugitive from sightseeing tours. I tried toexercise photography in all the little time slots I havesecured by sometimes sleeping less, sometimes eatingfaster. I have never been able to organize a singleexpedition within the country nor abroad, solely for thepurposes of photography. Whatever the conditions werewhen the shot was taken, the frames that will pop up as youturn over the pages will do so as the final product of my 15years old enthusiasm in photography. Maybe this is the firststep into a quest triggered by the desire to see and todocument what is seen.
Quoting Emile Zola, “If you ask me, you cannot claim tohave seen something until you have photographed it.”
My interest in photography could be attributed as amanifestation of my quest to see. This quest turns moreconcrete each time a photo frame is bonded by the interplayof light and objects. As I turn back to reflect on my quest inphotography, I see that it cannot be isolated from thetemporal and spatial conditions each photo is encased in.Just as the temporal conditions I have seen through theviewfinder have so shaped and molded the objects, I have notbeen able to shoot a single frame independent of this changenor isolated from time. In the end, there is a time dimensionshaping the objects of focus, untouchable by any technicalfacility. All I could actually do is to document the object at theinstant and conditions that I find it in, given only a few

belgeleyebilmek oluyor.
paylaflman›z… ‹flte, benim foto¤rafç›l›k serüvenimin belkide en güzel tan›m›.
Peki, varolan› belgelemek sanatsal bir haz yaflamayayetiyor mu? Bu sorunun cevab›n›n, asl›nda, hayat›n
neresinde durdu¤unuzla yak›n bir iliflki içinde oldu¤ukanaatindeyim. Profesyonel reklam foto¤rafç›s›yla, aile

capabilities that my camera enhances me with. Sometimesthe qualification as a “documenter” means much more forme than what is usually attributed to the profession of thephotographer: To witness a beauty as it exists, to documentit and to share with the loved ones… This, maybe, is then thebest definition of my quest in photography.
One could ask if it is sufficient to document a being in orderto actually feel an artistic sensation. I believe that theanswer to this question is closely related to where you standin the battle of life. The difference that is obvious betweenwhat you have produced and those of a professionaladvertisement photographer or those shot by a familymember may consist only of your goal when you press theshutter, and the essence that you breathe in to the shot.My adventure to document the places I have visited and seenand to convey my exhilaration during my trips to the essenceof the photographs, has turned into quest to record allbeauty as I see it or would like to see it, augmenting it withthe excitement I feel when I see it.
While this desire to document, as I have above mentioned,is directly related with the temporal and spatial setting, it isalso influenced to some degree by your inner breath andenergy. The truth expressed by Robert Haas as the big ironyof photography materializes at this point: When thephotographer records an image that he sees with his nakedeyes, he actually records what naked eyes would not beable to see. I think that that inner breath and energyunderlines this ironic truth. There is a subtle difference, which I have no control over, between my look at the worldthrough my bare eyes and through the viewfinder. At theleast, you focus on a portion of the reality of all that existsaround you, one which you want to see and document. And this look at reality is not always to see the beauty orperfection. Time comes when your look wanders to adeformity, an imbalance and to the abnormal.

“Foto¤raf nedir? Foto¤raf nas›l çekilir?...” gibi sorulardagenellikle foto¤raf›n nas›l bir teknik süreçten geçti¤i akla
gelir. “Nesnelerden yans›yan ›fl›¤›n ›fl›¤a duyarl› biryüzeyde iz b›rakmas› ve bu izin kimyasal süreçlerden
geçirilmesi” gibi teknik tan›mlar, foto¤raf› tan›mlamaktanziyade, foto¤raf›n nas›l olufltu¤unu anlat›r. Nas›l bir tekniksüreçten geçirilerek meydana geldi¤inden ziyade, o kareye
ne tür anlamlar yüklendi¤i ve söz konusu görüntününmuhtemel yorumlar›n›n ön plana ç›kmas› gerekti¤i
kanaatindeyim.
‹nsan›n hayata bak›fl aç›s›n› belirleyen, yine hayat›n içindeedindi¤i gözlüklerdir. Meslekî kariyeri, aflklar›, hobileri
In a way, then, it is your inner world that determines both theobject of focus and that aspect which makes the difference. The difference you make when a reality or a being, in theprocess of being documented, is molded with what you wouldlike the reality to be without breaking its ties with reality. It isat this point that a photo frame assumes the responsibility tojustify reality in the given time and space that we live in. Eachframe functions as an important tool in the quest of man toreach out to the existence around us, to understand thatexistence and to explain it. But ultimately photo frames areonly reflections of the original, constructed by light and colors. As the copy will never replace the original, the final productwill never help cease the quest of man trying to reach reality;rather it might even stimulate that desire.
Questions like “What is photography? How is can one take agood shot?” usually bring into mind the technical side ofphotography. Technical definitions like “Photography is theprocess where rays of light reflecting from objects fall andleave an imprint on a plane which is sensitive to light and wherethis imprint is further developed,” describe how a photograph isproduced rather than give a definition of photography. I believethat rather than understand how a photo is produced by sometechnical process, the meanings appended to that photo, and thepossible interpretations of that image should be stressed.A production could in no way be isolated from the life, feelingsand the psychological world of the producer. And it is this realitywhich makes us “us” and the product a work of art.
Looking forward from the stance of this reality, we could say thatphotography is “Our attempt to mould light and space with ourfeelings within the time period that we live in.” I am of the mindthat every piece produced by man in which he exhales not only hisbreath, but also a human consciousness, his soul and personality, carries with it a trace of artistic value. What determines a man’sperception of life is the spectacles he has somehow managed toacquire from life itself. His career, his passions, hobbies and even

Belki fark

fears shape those spectacles’ lenses and put him in a position tolook at life from a different perspective. We may not be aware ofit, but each spectacle we acquire enhances the view so that a newworld that we have not seen before now stretches in front of us.This is probably what Ernst Haas had in mind when, speaking ofphotography, he said: “…what we see is who we are.”
It is only after I started photography that I noticed that thedetails are of crucial importance and that difference lies inthose details. Things and events that have passed before myeyes repeatedly before have become more beautiful after myeyes got used to the viewfinder.
We have brought together in this album, photos taken fromdifferent parts of the world, some of which illustrate theharmony in diversity, others which reflect the variety insimilarity. This, to some extent, is closely related to howI perceive the reflection of globalization, a popular theme ofmodern times, on different natural and social geographies.
Globalization…
For some, globalization is the fundamental force of the erathat we now happen to live. A period of change that ought to besupported, promoted or resisted.
For others, it is the enormous myth of modern times.A misconception when defining and analyzing the forcesbehind the scenes that shape our life.
Leaving the dispute around the reality of this conceptualizationto the social scientists, we still have to face the fact thatglobalization trends, especially dominant in the economic andfinancial spheres, have actually brought a new dimension tothe reciprocal interaction among different cultures. Will thisnew dimension in reciprocity wipe out all the different culturesand life styles to bring us all under a single “global culture”?

“Lexus ve zeytin a¤ac›” metaforunu kullanan ThomasFriedman’a göre, “zeytin a¤ac›” insanlara kimlik kazand›ranve dünyadaki konumlar›n› belirleyen her fleyi temsil ediyor;
The debate around the cultural aspects of globalizationpositions this question at the heart of the matter.
I have made the following observation of the societies I have metin different parts of the world in the last 15 – 20 years whenglobalization trends have picked up pace: There is a widespreadbelief and expectation among the people that meeting societiesother than their own, and instituting economical and culturalrelations with them will actually enhance their own societies inmany ways. However they also carry the concern that they mightlose their direction within the global system, that they might endup bereft of their cultural identity and in the end be left aloneattached to nowhere.
According to Thomas Friedman, who uses the metaphor of“Lexus and olive tree,” the olive tree represents everything thathelps people find their identity and orient themselves in theworld. Accordingly, Lexus represents development, welfare andmodernity, tokens of the globalization trend. Friedman stressesthat a healthy globalization requires that people find the rightbalance between the olive trees that they possess and the Lexusthat they strive to possess.
I heed Friedman’s thoughts on the subject and believe, asIsaiah Berlin has put eloquently, a world which could embracedifferent colors under a peaceful umbrella, one which iscomposed of societies that are capable of developing their owncultural identities and approaching others with tolerance is nota utopian dream. A world composed of many cultures living inharmony with each other is not only a richer world, but also apossible and probable one.
I hope that this album would provide more for you to see, feel, think and dream than what these disorderly thoughts could.

During my university years studying economics, weunderstood that human resources in the contemporarysense, merely meant personnel management, that allsorts of corporate communication was referred to asadvertising and that banking was just about collectingdeposits and lending money. In the past 30 years or so,the world has experienced tremendous changes, so too,the way we do business and its related terminology.Communication has diversified into visual and verbalwhile visual communication has moved beyond just printmedia and motion pictures. Each has become a separatediscipline taught by different academia.
Many things have changed. One thing that I believe hasnot changed and perhaps has even strengthened itsstance amid technological advances - is photography, inits most elemental form. Through new media platforms,TV and Internet specifically, the power of photographyhas the potential to reach everyone around the world. It has been instrumental in raising global awareness ofpoverty, disease and political conflict. One cannot ignorethe importance photography has played in bringing anend to the Vietnam War. Those horrible images of thewar –of the crying Vietnamese girl whose clothes andskin had been burned with napalm bombs and the SouthVietnamese officer firing a bullet into the head of acaptured Vietcong soldier– these are still fresh in ourmemories. Sebastiago Salgado, James Nacthway and afew other courageous photographers raised ourawareness of the African massacres and helped put anend to that human tragedy. Unfortunately, human beings

Foto¤rafç›l›¤›n bir sanat m› yoksa bir zanaat m› oldu¤uhâlâ tart›fl›lmaktad›r. Foto¤rafç›l›¤›n pek çok türü var:
kendini ifade etmek amac›yla kullan›l›yorsa bir sanatt›r;gazetecilikte bir araç olarak kullan›ld›¤›nda bir belge;

Baz›lar›m›z

continue to destroy one another and the pictures ofbabies killed by hi-tech weaponry in the latest conflict inthe Middle East will stay in our memories for as long aswe live. It is from this that photography derives its power.I’m sure that future generations will feel the same shockand horror when they see these pictures years from now. These images go beyond what words can express.
The debate continues as to whether photography is anart or a craft. Photography has many forms; it is an art ifit is used as a means of self-expression; it is a documentif it is used as a tool in journalism; it is a message innews reporting and is also a means of entertainmenteven if one only takes family snapshots. Whatever wayyou view photography, it will continue affecting our livesand emotions regardless of what changes technologybrings to the way we photograph.
To me it is meaningless to discuss the differencebetween digital and film. What should matter is the endresult. I have published three photography books so far;experienced photographers never asked what camerasI used to produce those images. If the images evokethought and feeling, then it is a successful piece of work.
Adnan is a devoted amateur photographer. With hiscamera, (I personally do not care which camera) he hasbrought us many faces from around the globe. As theproverb says - “The one who travels most knows themost” so as an avid citizen of the world, Adnan has seenmore than many of us and wants to share with us whathe has seen. This is admirable. As mortal beings, weshould not keep our experiences to ourselves, we shouldshare them. Some of us are good at using words toconvey personal experiences and some of us are good atusing other means of communication for the samepurpose. But beware – a photograph may sometimes tell
gideremezlerse huzursuz olurlar. Foto¤raf makinesionlar›n vücutlar›n›n bir parças›d›r; ellerine yap›flm›fl
gibidir. Henri Cartier Bresson, bunu flu sözleriyle gayet iyibir flekilde ifade etmifl: “Foto¤raf makinesi benim

us much more than mere words! This will become clearas you see the photographs that Adnan has chosen toshare with us.
To photograph is a basic need for a photographer, likeeating or sleeping. If photographers cannot actualize thisneed, they are restless. The camera is a part of theirbody - it seems glued to the hand. Henri Cartier Bressonexpressed it well when he said: “The camera is anextension of my eye.”
Taking his camera on business trips, avoiding touristattractions and often getting less sleep to be able to takephotographs is evidence that Adnan is a seriousphotographer. He carefully chooses to document theworld at large - with its inhabitants, dwellings andnature. Just imagine the value of his work 100 yearsfrom now!
As you flip through the pages of the book, you areactually taking a trip around the world at your ownleisurely pace. There are some pictures that will inviteyou to spend more time, while others will stay in yourmemory forever and perhaps others will fade from yourthoughts in seconds. When you come to the last page, you will be safely back home with a lasting adventure torecall from time to time.
Thank you Adnan, for the courage and hard work youhave exerted to give us this book. After looking at thisbook, it is as if I have really been to some of those placesthat I have always wished to see for myself.

We photographers build on the tradition of the pioneerswho have paved the road to photography by puncturing a“needle hole” on a dark box. The light that passesthrough this needle hole shatters the darkness and thenwe have enlightenment. This is only the beginning. Thereal triumph is to be able to produce photographs, bycontrolling the amount and the quality of the light thatpasses through the hole, that would clarify what we wantexplain and that would help change the world. For that tohappen, we should be able to enlighten our minds andunderstand the world.
We have an institution in our country where minds thatseek to understand the world and enlighten it, blendtogether. It is called IFSAK. The IFSAK blend assemblesminds who come from different professions. One suchvolunteer is Adnan Büyükdeniz, a banker and aneconomist. Dr. Büyükdeniz is an IFSAK member who, inthe quest to control that fire burning inside him forphotography, has participated in the Basic PhotographyCourse of IFSAK and has further pursued photographyevery time he has found a chance. We have a basic rulewhen accepting a new member to IFSAK: The potentialmember should attend the membership meeting nomatter what his or her profession or reputation is. It isbecause of this that many professional photographers, who are all close to IFSAK, could not achievemembership status. I think that the best way to describethe passion of photography and IFSAK in Büyükdeniz, who aside from his other duties and titles is also theGeneral Manager of Albaraka Türk Participation Bank, is
