    2. Family; Describing People

    1. Do you come from a

    large or from a small

    family?

    [See also 1 / 3a, 3b, 4.]

    a. I come from a large family. Ive got two brothers and a sister.I also have a half-brother from my fathers previous marriage.

My grandparents on my mothers side are still alive, and since

they live in the same town as us, we often visit them. I also

have numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, but many of them

live far away, so we dont see them very often.b. I come from a small family. In fact, I am an only child.

Unfortunately, only one of my grandparents is still alive, but

since she doesnt live in the same town as us, I meet her only

twice or three times a month. I have only one uncle, but he

lives abroad, and so do his family.

    2. Describe a member of

    your family:

    What does he/she looklike?

What kind of clothesdoes he/she usuallywear?

    What is his/her hairlike?

    What is his/her facelike?

    What are his/herinner qualities?

What kind of lifestyledoes he/she have?

    What is yourrelationship like with

    him/her?

My sister is 26 years old, though she looks much younger. She

is quite short, so she always wears high-heeled shoes. Though she

is trying to keep up with the changing fashion, she usually wears

nice, comfortable clothes. She never wears make-up. She haslong, wavy hair. She usually wears it in a pony-tail. Originally it

was red, but last month she had it dyed dark brown, and shesreally satisfied with this new colour. To tell the truth, it was a bit

strange for me at first, but Ive got used to it by now. As a matter

of fact, this new colour goes well with her brown eyes and

suntanned skin. She has a small nose, but full lips, and she always

smiles. I think this is one of the things why my brother-in-law fell

head over heels in love with her!

As for her inner qualities, she is a bit shy, but friendly. She is

understanding and helpful, so I often discuss my problems withher. She has a good sense of humour. She prefers spending the

evenings at home instead of going out. She got married last

summer, and is expecting her first child now. She lives in a flat

on a housing estate with her husband. Shes a teacher at a local

primary school. Shes fond of cooking, so she prepares delicious

meals whenever I visit her. As she lives near the school I attend, I

often pop in on my way home.

    3. Describe someone you

    dont like. Why?

My neighbour is a seventy-year-old divorced lady, who shares

her flat with her two cats. Shes an old-age pensioner, I think. She

always wears nice, but terribly out-of-fashion dresses. She alwaysspends the evenings at home, watching TV or listening to the

radio. Shes a bit hard of hearing, so she does this quite loudly

even late at night, which annoys us very much. When she sees metaking home my boyfriend, shes always making insulting

remarks. She thinks she knows everything better than the other

tenants in the block, but she never does anything. One more thing

I hate about her is that shes a great gossip, and expects you to

listen patiently whenever she has something interesting to say.
