ForewordThis book was designed for students in Levels 1 and 2 of the Music for Little Mozarts series, who want to play popular music. A delightful story, Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse and the Birthday Surprise tells how the music friends compile a book of popular music for Clara Schuman-Cat’s birthday present. Many students will also want to color the illustrations found throughout the story.
Because students in Levels 1 and 2 have limited skills in note-reading, all pieces are written with pre-reading notation. Many of the pieces are in Middle C Position with the melody divided between the hands. All positions are shown on the page. Students may be unfamiliar with the rhythmic notation of some of the pieces. However, they will usually play the music correctly by memory, or if not, the rhythms can be quickly learned by rote. Each piece has a teacher/parent accompaniment part to create richer sounds and to increase the student’s rhythmic security.
Students will enjoy playing these familiar pieces and will feel like they are in Hollywood when performing them for family and friends.

Hooray for Hollywood
Mozart Mouse was the first one to have any luck. “Look what I found!” he cried. “It’s a piece called Hooray for Hollywood! This will be perfect for the first piece in the book. It’s the song that everyone thinks of when they hear about Hollywood. It’s been used in so many television shows and movies.”

Mickey Mouse March
Mozart Mouse’s whiskers twitched excitedly when he found the next piece. “Mickey Mouse! I think I might be related to him!” Everyone laughed.
“Actually, this piece was the theme song for The Mickey Mouse Club, one of the first TV shows the Walt Disney company ever produced,” Mozart Mouse said. “My parents used to watch it when they were little mice.”

If I Only Had a Brain(from the M-G-M Motion Picture “The Wizard of Oz”)
J. S. Bunny found the next piece and held it up for his friends to see. “This song is from The Wizard of Oz, one of my favorite movies,” he announced. “Judy Garland played Dorothy. Her hand and footprints are in the cement at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, a famous Hollywood landmark. I bet Clara would love to see that,” he sighed.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight
“I know this one,” Elgar E. Elephant said importantly, showing off another piece of music. “After all, my ancestors are from the jungle.” Then he laughed. “But the real reason I know this song is because it’s from my favorite movie, The Lion King.”
“I love that movie, too!” added Mozart Mouse. “Many movies are made in Los Angeles. The Walt Disney Studios are there.”
