    Corrosion Definition

    Corrosion The destruction or

deterioration of a material becauseof reaction with its environment

Most familiar as rusting andoxidation of metals

Also can include rotting of wood, breakdown of polymers and otherdeterioration processes

    Cost of Corrosion

Fontana* cites a figures of $70 billion for theUnited States in 1975, from a study performedby the National Bureau of Standards andBattelle Memorial Institute.

An updated study was conducted in 1998 andshows a figure of $276 billion, or 3.1% of GDP.NACE CC Study

However you view it, the cost is huge.

There are also major costs in terms of

Health, Safety and Environmental issues. Example

BP's pipeline failure at Prudhoe Bay,Alaska, in 2006 which resulted in theleakage of more than 200,000 gallons ofoil.

The pipeline suffered extensive corrosiondue to lack of maintenance over severalyears.

U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) Chairman CarolynW. Merritt Senate :

"Virtually all of the seven root causes identified for thePrudhoe Bay incidents have strong echoes in TexasCity."

    These included, she said, the

significant role of budget and production pressuresin driving BP's decision-making - and ultimately

harming safety. Conclusion cutting corners and maintenance is

not only dangerous to life and the environment, it isbad business.
