Meekness is not weakness but rather

strength under control.

Think About it:

Mercy is the heartbeat of the

New Testament and the Gospel.

Christ begins His sermon dealing with the inward attitudes and qualities that a believer should possess. It is the attitudes of our heart which determines who we are. First He deals with the poor in spirit. This does not mean sad and depressed but poor in the spiritual realm of life. It means you know yourself and your sinful condition. You understand that you are nothing without God. In Christ we have all things and through Him we receive the kingdom. Compare Isaiah 66:2 with Revelation 3:17. Blessed are they that mourn. This is a state of sorrow yet the believer is filled with joy. We should mourn sin, the lost, and the enemies of God. The

effects and consequences of sin in people’s lives. Though we feel sorrow Christ promises comfort that only comes from Him and within our heart. Blessed are the meek. This means patient, not given to anger or resentment. It is not weakness but rather strength

Christ moves from those inward qualities of the heart to the inward desires of the heart. The Pharisees had dealt with obtaining righteousness by following rules and outward appearances. Christ speaks of one hungering and thirsting after righteousness in verse six. This is an inward craving for something to satisfy the root of that craving. You actively pursue to fulfill it. It is all you can think about.

root of the matter. Read Proverbs 4:23. Pure means free from mixture, spot, or moral defilement. It means we stay uncontaminated in a world of sin and evil. A pure heart allows us to see God in our lives. Blessed are the peacemakers. As we are confronted with conflict, we are to act as peacemakers. We are the channels for God’s mercy and peace on this earth. That is what it means to be a child of God. Christ deals lastly with the persecuted. This means one treated in a evil manner unjustly. Christ goes as far as to say be exceeding glad for this. This can be a hard truth to swallow but we must remember that blessed means divine joy despite any outward circumstances. These are all attitudes and actions that we should strive to live out that come from our heart.

Your Thoughts

Verses 7-12 deals with actions that others will see in our lives. As we have received mercy from God, we are to show it to others unconditionally. Even those who show cruelty, injustice, injury, or wrong to you. One person said it best, “He who shows no mercy destroys the bridge over which he himself must pass.” Blessed are the pure in heart. Christ gets to the

under control. The world despises meek. It looks for the those who will fight their way to the top. Christ reverses this thinking putting the cross before the crown. It is the meek who will receive the earth.

Righteousness means holy or without sin. Our heart will dictate where we aim and what we seek. If our heart is right with God, we will seek to be like Him. We will crave a holy life which will be seen in our actions, thoughts, emotions, and reactions. Read Psalm 42:1-2, 63:1, and 84:2. Believers should strive to live righteous which is accomplished through the Holy Spirit that lives in a believer.
