Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi Gets Bucket List Win at San Antonio Rodeo

By Tanya Randall Two-time World Champion Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi captured her first San Antonio Rodeo Barrel Racing Champion in her 17-year-old professional career. The Lampasas, Texas, barrel racer was able to scratch the rodeo off her bucket list of ones to win when she edged fellow Texan Jill Wilson of Snyder, by $250 for the championship. “I knew it was close,” said Tonozzi. “It was like wow this has finally happened. I’ve come so close so many times on Duke and had something go wrong in the finals. It was just like FINALLY! A bucket list rodeo! I’ve been wanting to win this rodeo for so long!” Ironically, the San Antonio Rodeo, just two hours from her child-hood hometown of Victoria, Texas, along with Rodeo Houston, two hours in the opposite direction, were the rodeos that turned her on to the sport as a child. “Everyone thinks I grew up in a rodeo family and that definitely wasn’t the case,” she laughed. “We scheduled our visits to the ro-deos around the entertainers back then. I knew nothing about barrel racing, didn’t know I wanted to be a barrel racer, but we went to Houston and San Antonio every year.” The San Antonio Rodeo, held February 6-22, was a limited-entry rodeo with 50 contestants vying in a tournament-style rodeo for a total purse of $214,500. Rather than times, contestants advanced on money won with the highest money earner at the conclusion of the finals earning the championship title. Tonozzi had started the rodeo with her home-bred Ima Famous Babe (“Katniss”), who recently won the San Angelo Pro Rodeo. Katniss placed Tonozzi in all three rounds of her bracket—third in the first two and first in the third—to be the money leader out of that pool with $5,000. Before the Semifinals in San Antonio, Katniss, a 7-year-old daughter of Dash Ta Fame, came up sore, so Tonozzi went to her older sister, Babe On The Chase (“Birdie”), by Chasin Firewater. In the first round of their Semifinals, the judges stopped the barrel race of the televised rodeo due to ground issues. Tonozzi was one of the remaining three barrel racers from that performance to run before they stopped. “I think it was amazing,” she said. “I can’t believe it happened at a rodeo of that size. I think it’s a step in the right direction. I commend the judges for worrying not only about the safety of the horses but also the safety of the riders.” The two-time world champion and mom of a toddler, Tinlee, with husband Garrett Tonozzi, was adamant about not forgetting the safety of the rider too. “We’re all worried about the safety of our equine athletes, but we’re on top of them,” she said. “They’re always worried about the roughstock riders, but barrel racing isn’t the safest event either. “Ground safety matters for everyone involved. I couldn’t believe that it happened (stopping the rodeo), but I was thankful that the judges stopped it. I think it’s a hard decision to make because you’ve got committees and stock contractors breathing down your back to make show run smoothly and go fast. A lot of these rodeos are on TV now and we’ve got to be really conscientious about stopping it now because it doesn’t look good for horses to be falling on TV and no one taking notice. “We just want everyone to know that we love our animals and San Antonio Continued on Page 6

We ask these animals for their lives every time we go out there and to ask them to run on something like that just isn’t fair to them.” The judges resched-uled the barrel race for the following morn-ing, and Jill Wilson and Lean Mean Blue Dean turned in the fastest time of the rodeo, a 13.82, on the properly manicured ground. Tonozzi and Birdie missed a check in their first round of the Semifinals, but they made up for it in the rodeo performance (2nd Round of the Semifinals) that with a victorious 13.91. That put them second on money won with $10,000 going into the Finals behind Ryann Pedone and High Point Barrel Horses’ Feel The Sting’s $11,500. In the Finals, Wilson and Tonozzi tied with runs of 14.02 to

each pocket $13,500. However, Tonozzi got the championship with $23,500 in total earnings to Wilson’s $23,250. Ironically, Birdie made her pro rodeo debut at San Antonio as a 4-year-old in 2015. “I had just won the ($100,000) slot race in Kinder on her and I

didn’t really have anything to ride in a building so I cracked her out at San Antonio,” Tonozzi chuckled. Birdie and Katniss are half-sisters out of Streakin Six Babe, a daughter of Streakin Six, who is the sire of Tonozzi’s first WPRA World Champion Sixth Vision and Charmayne James’ World Cham-pion Cruisin On Six. Danyelle Campbell had claimed Streakin Six Babe off the track for James, who later sold her to Tonozzi. Ima Super Fly Guy, now 12, was Tonozzi’s first homebred champion out of the race-winning mare by Streakin Six out of the stakes-placed, race winner Ambassadors Babe, by First Ambassador (TB). Tonozzi said that the two mares are nothing alike. “They have two totally different personalities, two totally differ-ent ways of going,” she said. “They are complete opposites, but they’re both athletic and fast.” Katniss has been the more solid of the two mares. In the past, Birdie has had some trouble on the first barrel, but she’s more than proven her worth in the same arenas, like San Antonio and the Thomas & Mack in Las Vegas.

Tonozzi says a bridle change—to the same one her sire won in—and her husband heading on the mare have made a huge difference. “I think that’s due to Garrett heading on her,” explained Tonozzi. “She wouldn’t take a pull. When he started roping on her that helped a lot…that and the bridle change.” The Monday after winning San Antonio, Tonozzi and Birdie made the progressive round of The American Semifinals Rodeo af-ter placing in the top 40 out of slack. If she continues on to AT&T Stadium for RFD-Tv’s The American, Tonozzi will add that event along with the futurities with her young horses and Rodeo Houston. With her great mare KissKiss BangBang (“Mona”), Tonozzi has another strong shot at scratching yet another rodeo off her bucket list. They finished reserve champions there last year after Mona fell to her hip leaving the third barrels in the Finals. Tonozzi currently leads the WPRA World Standings with $59,888.

By Tanya Randall Four-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier Stevi Hillman and MCM ImaSharpGuy (“Sharpie”) swept the La Fiesta de los Vaque-ros Rodeo, held February 15-23 in Tucson, Arizona. Their winner’s share of the $20,000-added rodeo was $9,737. It was the second Tucson Rodeo Championship for the Weath-erford, Texas, barrel racer and the gray rocket, bred and owned by Matt and Bendi Dunn of Bismarck, Missouri. In 2017, it was their breakout victory at a major rodeo after pairing up just a few weeks prior. Hillman and Sharpie made their first pro rodeo runs since the 2019 National Finals Rodeo at Fort Worth, Texas, where the placed in one round of their bracket. “He was really fresh at Fort Worth and I knew better than to run him,” she explained, “but I really wanted to try him there (in the new Dickies Arena). So, I was on him quite a bit more before we went to Tucson.” Sharpie got a pass on the 13-second course at the San Anto-nio Rodeo, where Hillman took her young horse Twaynas Guy

(“Shiner”) and her steady ace Cuatro Fame (“Truck”). Her plan was to run the 7-year-old Frenchmans Guy, Twaynas Dash gelding and save 13-year-old Truck for backup duty. However, it was Truck that picked up $4,000 and advanced Hillman to the semifinals there. “He’s feeling really good,” she said of Truck, Melissa Mouton’s Dash Ta Fame, Streak Laico Bird gelding who has carried her to all four of her NFR qualifications. “I had no intentions of run-ning him at San Antonio. He was just going as a backup because I was committed to running my young horse Shiner. He kind of got frazzled with the crowd and the run kind of hit him, so I had to step back. I said, ‘Okay, Truck, it’s time to step up and trying to get around these barrels at San Antonio.’ We got around them two out of three runs, so I was pretty happy with that.” On Saturday night after her set at San Antonio, Hillman met up with Ivy Hurst and Kellie Collier to drive to Tucson. She was out in slack on Tuesday morning. While she had really wanted to ride Truck at Tucson, but after he did so well at San Antonio, she opted to take Sharpie, knowing that

he’d won the rodeo in 2017. “He’d been riding really good and I was so excited to take him back to Tucson,” she said of Sharpie, by A Sharp Frenchman out of the great two-time NFR qualifier and leading futurity horse Mulberry Canyon Moon, by Marthas Six Moons. “I really wanted to ride Truck outside, but he did so good at San Antonio that I had to leave him at home. I really didn’t have any other decision to make.” Damper ground conditions for morning slack made for safe, fast track for the fleet footed, paint-peeler. Sharpie clocked the fastest time of the rodeo, a 17.19 on a WPRA Standard, to win the first round. “My first run was probably one of the best runs I’ve ever had on him,” she said. “It was so smooth. It was just a solid run.” Hillman left Sharpie in the care of Jackie and Angela Ganter while she flew home to pickup Truck and head back to San Antonio for their Semifinals run on Thursday and Friday. Then she was back on a plane for the Tucson short go. Rain on Friday night and Saturday made Hillman question the ground conditions for the short go on Sunday, but the wetter foot-ing was just slower, not dangerous.

“The arena got really heavy and cloddy,” she said. “I had a backup plan because I know last year Tucson got flooded and it was so mucky. I wasn’t going to run Sharpie if it was going to be like that. I had a game plan for a different horse if it was going to be that way. We got to the arena early and it was just wet. I know it was going to be slower, but it wasn’t dangerous. It wasn’t standing water, and I was happy to be running Sharpie.” They clocked a 17.78 to win the short go and average. Hillman, who currently sits 12th in the WPRA World Stand-ings with $18,355, wanted to thank Hurst, Collier, the Ganters and Andrea Busby for their help in making the win possible. “It definitely takes a whole team to go down the road,” she added. Next up for Hillman is The Patriot Futurity with DTF Texas Moon, followed by RFD-Tv’s The American. “I’m really torn on The American,” she said. “I’m taking both Sharpie and Truck. We’ll see what the new setup is going to be like with the alley. I’ve always wanted to run Truck at The American but I couldn’t because of the short start and quick stop. We’ll see who gets the call.”

I f you have spent much time in the Bible, I’m sure you’ve run across things that you just don’t agree with. I look back at some of the things I objected to and I get so tickled and

embarrassed. What in the world was I thinking? Arguing with Almighty God who created EVERYTHING, including me, about how things should be! I’d run and hide if you could actually run and hide from God. How ignorant can you be? In my case, pretty ignorant. I have argued with Him about tithing, speaking in tongues, degrees of sin, and submission to my husband, to name a few. Oh, but I loved the Word on healing and prosperity! Truth is, there are blessings attached to every single one of these subjects, even the ‘objected to’ ones.

Since I was raised heathen, I didn’t know the Bible said in Matt. 15:6 that “our traditions have made the Word of God to NO EF-FECT”. I didn’t know that was possible. But it is. If we won’t do what God says, we can’t receive what He offers. Let’s line up with the Word and receive it ALL!
