    Whatis

    K-12

    K-12 means Kindergarten and

    the 12 years of elementary andsecondary education. Kindergartenrefers to the 5-year old cohort whoundergoes a standardized Kinder

    curriculum. Elementary educationrefers to primary schooling thatinvolves 6 or 7 years of educationwhile secondary education refers

    to high school.

    Through the Enhanced K-12 Program,it is envisioned that our graduates will:

    possess sufficient mastery of basiccompetencies (literacy, numeracy,problem solving, etc.).

    be emotionally developed and

    competent to live a meaningful life. be socially aware, pro-active,involved in public and civic affairs.

    be adequately prepared for the worldof work or entrepreneurship or higher

    education. be legally employed.

    be globally competitive.

    To individuals and families An enhanced curriculum willdecongest academic workload, giving

    students more time to mastercompetencies and time for extracurricular activities, thus, allowing for amore holistic development.

    Graduates will posses competenciesand skills relevant to the job market.

    Graduates will be able to earn higherwages and/or better prepared to starttheir own business. Studies in the

    Philippines have shown that anadditional year of schooling increasesearnings by 7.5%

    K-12 will facilitate mutual recognitionof Filipino graduates and professionalsin other countries.A better educated society provides a

    sound foundation for long-term socio-economic development.

    Guiding Principles of K-12

    Enhancement of the basic education

    curriculum is the central focus of K-12.

    The enhancement curriculum willoffer areas of specialization orelectives such as science andtechnology, music and arts, agricultureand fisheries, sports, business andentrepreneurship, etc., and subjects

    for advanced placement.

    Guiding Principles of K-12

    As part of the bigger basic educationreform, the enhanced K-12 educationis undertaken hand in hand with thevigorous efforts to ensure adequacy of

    inputs.

    Change is two-fold: curriculumenhancement and transitionmanagement.

    An open and consultative processwill be adopted in the developmentand implementation of K-12.
