Today,Iwaitedpa5entlybehindafamilyatSam’sClubastheycomparedbu0erprices.Finally,IaskedifIcouldhelpthem,towhichtheyreplied,“No,thankyou,”andthenIaskedwheretheywerefrom.Theyoungermanreplied,“fromBhutan.”IaskediftheywereNepalese.Theireyeslitupastheyan-sweredintheaffirma5ve.AlthoughtheyhavebeeninFargoforthreeyears,IwelcomedthemandtoldthemthatIhavemetothersfromtheircountry.Itwasn’tmuchofanen-counter,soIprayedaswepartedthatmybrieffriendshipgesturemightbeusedbytheHolySpirittocreateasmalldimpleintheirHinduwall.

Ourpartoftheworldisrapidlymovingtowardamul5-cul-turalmixforwhichmostMidwesternAmericanChris5ansareunprepared.Inthis,urbanCanadianChris5ansareabitahead.However,ascanofourSundaymorningcongrega5onswill,withafewexcep5ons,findthosewhoaremostlywhiteandmiddleclass.Forthe200yearsofthemodernmissionarymovement,churcheshavebeensendingmissionariesaroundtheworld.Now,theworldiscomingtousandmostofusdon’tknowwhattodowithit.Duringmyministryyearsandintensifyinginthepasttwelve,myhearthasachedwhenIhaveseenanapparentlackofwillingnesstoadjust,yes,evendras5callychange,ourlifestylesandministriestoreflectthemissionaryheartofGod.

Manitobaisfullofimmigrants.TheNorthCentralAssocia5onisexperiencinganinflowofpeoplefromalloverthecountryandfromaroundtheworld.Wecon5nuetoexperienceunprecedentedwealth,andwhenoilorcommoditypricesdrop,there’stoomuchornotenoughrainorjobsbecomescarce;wepraythatGodwillreversethetrend.ButletusnotreflecttheJames’perspec5ve,“Whenyouask,youdonotreceive,becauseyouaskwithwrongmoGves,thatyoumayspendwhatyougetonyourpleasures.”(James4:3)

Iamsogladthatwearebeinggivenanopportunitytorethinkourartudesandourways.Beginningwithmy2008RuralMinistryRevitaliza5onStudy,bolsteredbyChurchEnrichmentincludingtheNaturalChurchDevelopmentprocessandignitedbycontribu5onsbytheleadershipofCamRoxburgh(NABVPforMissionalIni5a-

Sinceourassocia5onmee5ngsinOctober2014throughtheendofMay,thisyear,Ihavecon5nuedtoservetheNorthernPlainsRegionthroughenrichmentevents,pastoralplacementsupport,coachingpastorsandlayleaders,helpingchurchesconsidermul5plica5on,encouragingpastorsclustersandhelpingconflictedchurchesfindpeace.WhenIhandedtheregionalministrytoDr.GordonStork,fivechurcheswereseekingpastors,severalpreviouslyconflictedchurcheshadreachedaplaceofpeace,nearlyallpastorswereinvolvedinaclusterandtwochurches(MissionBap5stinWin-nipeg–internalmul5plica5on;Riv-erCityChurchinFargo–newcon-grega5onprojectedinFebruary)wereplanningtomul5ply.Fivepas-torsfromfourofourchurcheshavecommi0edtotheETHOSprocesswithCamRoxburghandForge.Concludingcoachingrela5onshipswashardbutgood,knowingthatthosemenwillbewellcaredforbymybrother,GordonStork.Ihavestartedinapart5meministryposi-5onwithRiverCityChurchandamgearingupwithtwoothermentolaunchamedia5onworkthisfall.

Regional Leadership Team 2014/15wasabusyyearfortheTheRegionalLeadershipTeam(RLT).InadditiontobeingthesupportandaccountabilityvehicleforourRegionalMinister(RM),theteamin2014/15wasre-sponsibleconductingthesearchforandhiringofanewRM.

ConsistingoftworepresentativesfromboththeMBA&NCA(NorthCentralAssociation),theteammeetsfivetosixtimesperyear.MeetingsareconductedonlineviaSkype,withtheexcep-tionofanannualfacetofacemeetingoccurringinlateAugustorearlySeptemberofeachyear.In2014/15therewereseveraladditionalfacetofacemeetingstofacilitatethetransitiontoanewRM.

Onthebasisoftheques5onsIhavebeenaskedandmypersonalobserva5onasIvisitedthechurchesoftheMBA,Ihaveno-5cedthatwehavefailedtounder-standtheconceptofbeingmis-sionalatitscoreorweareunwill-ingtomakethechangesnecessarytotrulybecomemissionalinourcommuni5es.Therearemanygoodthingswhichwehavedonewhichwehaveconfusedwithbe-ingmissional:handingoutsomespecialtreatsatsome5meduringtheyear;holdingspecialserviceswhereweinvitetheneighbours;churchesofdif-ferentdenomina5onsjoiningtogethertodoDVBS.These,andothersuchprogramsmayhavehadsuccessbutallmissthecoreofbeingmissional.Rela5onshipisatthecoreofbeingmissional.Rela5onshipwherethemen,woman,youthandchildrenofourMBAchurchesgetinvolvedinthelivesofthepeoplearoundourhomeandchurches,notbyinvi5ngthemtosomethingcenteredaroundthepeopleofthechurchorthechurchbuilding,butbymovingintheirdirec5onanddoingsointheir

Weallunderstandthisbytheory.Itistheprac5calwestrugglewithsomuch.IfleadershipdecidedtocancelservicessomeSundaysothatchurchfamiliescouldgopicnicwithneighboursandfriendsfromoutsidethechurchfamily,theyruntheriskofbeingmis-understood.Some,mayIsaymany,wouldfeelthattheyhadletGoddownandhadfailedtomaintain"church"aswehavecometoknowit.Whyisitacceptabletotakeanotherfamilyfromthechurchtotheco0ageandmissSundayservicesbutnotacceptabletomissservicesiftakingafamilyfromoutsidethechurch?

Bynowyouwillhavebeguntothinkthattobecometrulymissionalyouwillhavebeenpushedoutofyourcomfortzone.Youwillfurtherunder-standthatrela5onshipsoutsideofthechurcharejustasimportantasthoseinsideofthechurch,youwillunder-standthatyouaretakingtheriskoflosingsomewhomaynotbewillingtochange;andyouwillunderstandthatyourchurchwillbedifferentthanyouhaveeverknownit.Ihavenotevensaidanythingabouttheissuesofjus5ce,widowsandfatherlessthatIsaiahspokeaboutinthefirstchapterofthatBook.Icannotbegintoanswerhowthismaylookinindividualchurch

situa5onsbutIchallengeyouandyourcongrega5ontoseriouslythinkthroughtheissuesthatholdyoufromendorsingbeingtrulymissional,andthentakingthestepstobecomeso.WehaveaskedourConferencespeakertofocusontheprac5-calwaysindividualsandchurchesmayimplementthisatthecongrega5onallevel.

IstartedbyspeakingofafloodinOx-ford,NS.Letmespeakofanotherflood.EachyeartheNileRiverwouldfloodtheupperreachesanddeltaoftheRiver.ThiscreatedpersonalhardshiptothepeoplelivingalongtheNileandsotheGovernmentofEgyptbuilttheAssamDam.ItcontrolledtheRiverandthefloodsceased.Lifebecamemorecomfortablebuttherewasanunexpecteddown-side.Nolongerdidthefloodsbringtherichnutrientsthatthefarmersneededtogrowcrops.Injustafewshortyearsthelushfieldsreturnedtodesert.Thelackof

Thereweresomeaddi5onstothefacili5esthisyearwiththeinstalla5onofawalk-incooler.Thistremendouslyimprovedtheworkingsinthekitchenandwasappre-ciatedbythekitchenstaff.WealsopurchasedanAEDdefibrillatortohaveonsite.Weareprayingthatitneverneedstobeused.Severalofthestafftookituponthemselvestocreateabogwalkinthebush.Thisprovedtobeverypopularwiththecampers,andprobablynotsomuchwiththelaundrydepartmentathome.ThankyoutoCampNu5mikforsellingus(atagreatprice)theirwatertrampoline.Thekidsloveditanditwasafavouriteac5vityintheheatthissummer.

5.Wecon5nuetoholdaMemorialserviceeveryothermonthtorememberthosewhohavepassedaway.Thisisagood5meforfamiliestocomebackandshareaswerememberthelivesoftheirlovedones.

6.Thispastyearwewereabletocelebratespecial“Sundays”aswecelebratedsomeofthefollowing:Easter,Christmas,RemembranceDay,Mother’s&Father’sDayandThanksgiving.ThefirstSundayofeachmonthweusuallyholdourCom-munionService;whichmostResidentsandTenantslookforwardto.

7.OneofthespecialprivilegesIhaveistobeabletomeetwithstaffmembers.Icanencourage,prayandshareGod’swordandpromiseswiththem.
