Folktale Theater Tell your child that when the earth was new,

Bear had a long, fluffy tail. Then read this play together.

Why Bear Has a Very Short Tail

BEAR: Fox, how do you catch such tasty fish?

FOX: It’s easy, Bear. Dip your tail into a stream. Then pull it up. You’ll catch lots of fish that way!

BEAR: Great idea, Fox! (Fox hides nearby.)

FOX: Oh, I tricked Bear! He’s sitting on a rock in that fast stream. There goes his long, fluffy tail into the water!

BEAR: The longer I sit here, the more fish I’ll catch!

FOX: (still hiding) It’s very cold. The stream will freeze soon. The ice will get thick. Bear’s tail will get stuck!

BEAR: It’s time to go home. I’ll just pull my tail up. . . . Ow, ow! Maybe if I just pull harder . . . ! (Suddenly, Bear pulls his tail right off!)

FOX: Oh, Bear! Now you have only a stump for a tail!

Recycled Words Help your child search newspapers or magazines

to find words with the prefixes re-, un-, or mis-, circle them, and read

Fox and Mole ead the chant with a partner. Use Target Vocabulary words to talk about what you learned about helping others.

I overheard a tale one time

about a fox and mole.

Their friendship was unique I heard.

And so the story goes:

“Help me! Help me!” Fox cried out

“I’m stuck inside this hole.”

“My claws are sharp. My paws are swift.

Let me help!” suggested Mole.

Mole quickly flung the dirt aside

and Fox came tumbling out.

Then Fox and Mole played peacefully,

running all about.

Half-Chicken Selection Summary

Half-Chi ken Long ago, a chick was born. It was not an ordinary

chick. It had only one wing, one eye, one leg, and half

the feathers as other chicks. E eryone called him Half-

Chicken.

One day, Half-Chicken o erheard the other

animals talking about him. They said he was e en more

unique than anyone at the court of the iceroy in

Mexico City. Half-Chicken decided to isit the iceroy.

On his way, he found a stream that was blocked.

He mo ed some branches so the stream could keep

going. Then he found a fire that was about to go out. He

fanned the fire. The fire blazed. Then he found the

wind tangled in some bushes. It blew again because

Half-Chicken untangled it.

At the iceroy’s enormous palace, a cook threw

Half-Chicken into a soup pot. The fire suggested that

the water put him out to sa e Half-Chicken. Then

the wind lifted Half-Chicken up to the roof.

They helped Half-Chicken because he helped

them. That is why we see weathercocks

standing on roofs on their only leg.

The Monarchs

At a special time of year, a group of monarch butterflies flies 12

overhead. The United States winter will be too cold for them. 23

They fly off to find hospitality in a warmer place. 33

Some of the monarchs are only two or three weeks old! They 45

will go on the long journey. The monarchs are flying to Mexico. 57

There the warmer air will welcome them for the winter. 67

Making this trip is quite a feat. Some monarchs travel more 78

than 1,500 miles! As they fly south, others join them on the 90

journey. Millions of monarchs fill the skies in an unending line. 101

It is a beautiful thing to see. The monarchs fly about fifty miles 114

each day. Then they stop to rest on tree branches or flowers. 126

Every day they continue flying. They are unstoppable. 134

Monarch butterflies sip nectar from flowers. It is hard to 144

believe, but they gain weight during their trip! The fat in their 156

bodies gives them energy to fly. The strong winds help them on 168

their way, too. 171

After many weeks, more than 100 million monarch butterflies 180

will arrive in the Mexican mountains. 186
