Horizontal housing

As standard, the housing is designed and machined universally for all mountingpositions. From size 260, the horizontal housing is standard for mounting position M1.

2.4.8 Gearing and shaftsThe gearing with edge corrections is made of high-quality, tempered and ground casehardened steels. The output shafts are made of tough quenched and tempered steel.

2.4.9 Shaft bearingSelf-aligning, cylindrical and tapered roller bearings from well-known manufacturers areused.

2.4.10 Torque arm/gear unit mountingInstead of foot mounting, gear units can be mounted with torque arm, see page 121 ormounting flange, see page 122 .The basic variants are:• Foot mounting (X.../B)• Flange mounting (X.../F)• Torque arm (X.../T)

2.4.11 LubricationSplash, bath or pressure lubrication is used for gear units depending on the mountingposition, gear unit size and type (page 70 and subsequent pages). An oil expansion tank might be required for bath lubrication. With pressure lubrication, the bearings and gearing are lubricated via an integrated shaft end pump or an attachedmotor pump.An oil dipstick or an oil level glass (standard for splash lubricated gear unit sizes X180to X320 in mounting position M1) is used to visually check the oil level.Instead of the oil drain plug, an oil drain valve can be provided. This ball valve allows fora drain line to be easily attached when changing the gear unit oil.An oil heater might be necessary when ambient temperatures are low. The oil heaterensures that the oil is sufficiently liquid when starting up the gear unit in coldenvironments (see page 116). SEW-EURODRIVE provides the oil heater with a presetthermostat that is attached to the gear unit.

2.5.7 Output shaft as hollow shaft with splining /..VThe output shaft is a splined shaft according to DIN 5480.Included in the scope of delivery:Endplate with screws [1] or 2 retaining rings, protection cover [2]

2.5.8 Gear unit mounting of hollow shaft gear unitsDue to the rigid connection between the machine shaft and the hollow shaft of the gearunit, constraining forces can occur on the output shaft bearing. This is why you have to observe the following points when mounting hollow shaft gearunits:• The gear unit is usually foot or flange-mounted and used as bearing point when the

machine shaft has no individual bearing or merely provides one bearing point. Youhave to provide for an accurate coaxial alignment with the bearing point.

• If the machine shaft has at least two own bearing points, the gear unit should only beconnected to the machine shaft and supported with a torque arm. Avoid foot orflange-mounted gear units to avoid overdimensioning of the bearing.

[2]

INFORMATIONFor detailed information on the geometry of the machine shaft, refer to page 406.

INFORMATIONNon-compliance can lead to damage to the output shaft bearing and encourages theformation of friction corrosion in the connection of the machine shaft and hollow shaftof the gear unit.

2.8.3 Drywell sealing systemVertical gear units with output shaft pointing downwards can be equipped with a Drywellsealing system in addition to the usual sealing. The lower bearing of the output shaft isseparated from the oil chamber by an integrated tube [1]. The bearing is grease-lubricated and has to be relubricated at regular intervals (DIN 3404 A G1/8 flat greasenipple). The oil level is lower than the upper end of the tube to prevent oil [2] from leakingat this point. Each gear unit is equipped with a Drywell sealing system with pressurelubrication (shaft end pump or motor pump) to ensure sufficient lubrication of the upperbearing and the gearing. The following figure shows a Drywell sealing system.

65675AXX

[1]

[2]

INFORMATIONThe Drywell sealing system requires a dust-proof sealing system on the output shaft. For gear units from size 220, the Drywell sealing system is only possible in combi-nation with a standard bearing on the output shaft.

Due to the lowered oil level, the gear unit might have to be equipped with an additionaloil tank. This depends on the following factors:• Gear unit size, gear unit reduction ratio• Input speed, input power• Pump size, pump capacity• Ambient temperature at startupConsult SEW-EURODRIVE for further details.

2.12 Storage and transport conditionsThe gear units can be provided with the following protection and packaging typesdepending on the storage and transport conditions.

2.12.1 Internal corrosion protectionStandard corrosion protection

After the test run, the test oil fill is drained out of the gear unit. The remaining oil filmprotects the gear unit against corrosion for a limited period of time.

Long-term corrosion protectionAfter the test run, the test oil fill is drained out of the gear unit and the interior space isfilled will a vapor phase inhibitor. The breather filter is replaced by a screw plug andenclosed with the gear unit.

2.12.2 Exterior corrosion protectionIn general, the following measures are taken for exterior corrosion protection:• Corrosion protection is applied to bare, non-painted functional surfaces of shafts,

flanges, mounting and foot surfaces on the gear unit. Remove it only using anappropriate solvent which is not harmful to the oil seal.

• Small spare parts and loose pieces, such as bolts, nuts, etc., are packed in corrosionprotection plastic bags (VCI corrosion protection bags).

• Threaded holes and blind holes are covered by plastic plugs.

2.12.3 PackagingStandard packaging

The gear unit is delivered on a pallet without cover.Application: Land transport

Long-term packagingThe gear unit is delivered in a wooden box that is also appropriate for sea transport. Application: Sea transport and/or for long-term storage

INFORMATION• If the gear unit is stored longer than 6 months, you must check the protective

coating of unpainted areas as well as the paint at regular intervals. Areas in whichthe protective coating and/or paint has been damaged may have to be repainted.

2 Storage and transport conditionsProduct Description and Overview of Types

2.12.4 Storage conditions

INFORMATION• During storage up to startup, the gear unit must be stored in a shock-free manner

to prevent damage to the anti-friction bearing races.• The output shaft must be rotated at least one full rotation every six months so that

the position of the roller elements in the bearings of the input and output shaftschanges.

INFORMATIONThe gear units are delivered without an oil fill; different protection systems are requireddepending on the storage period and storage conditions as shown in the table below.
