ST VINCENT DE PAUL HELPLINE: 1800 305 330 Give ém an inch, and theyll take a yard! ”. Translated into metric terms, this would be Give ém a centimetre, and theyll take a metre”. Regardless of the measurements, we know the old saying means there will always be some people, be they children, teenagers or adults, who can be so carried away by new-found freedoms - freedomsfrom sensible restrictions which were the secret of prior success - are thrown aside, with caution thrown to the winds, all too often with disastrous consequences. Schooliescan often be one such example, and end-of-season footy trips another. Previously highly-disciplined students or sportspeople can throw off the shackles which were both a focus and a safeguard, with much that was gained in discipline and self-restraint being lost in the twinkling of an eye. Against this all-too-familiar background, we all need to consider the lifting of some of the restrictions introduced over the past ten weeks in response to the global COVID-19 crisis. As of this week, we can now play golf, go fishing, have a few people together in our homes. And we can also attend Mass. Well, some of us can. Ten at a time, but thats ten more than a week ago. We need to be grateful that this is both possible and permissible, but we also need to make sure we dont blow itby failing to respect those still very definite restrictions which still need to be observed for the good and safety of all. For us, as a parish, that means parishioners wishing to attend a 10.15am Mass will have to book in by email ([email protected]). Those who do not have access to email can phone 0491 176 149 - but email is definitely preferable. You will receive a confirmation of your booking(call it a ticketif you like), and you will need to bring that confirmation to the church in order to be admitted. It means washing hands, and observing the now familiar social distancerules. And it will mean recording names and contact details of everyone attending. And it will mean - for the time being - that only 20 parishioners (10 on Saturday morning, 10 more on Sunday) will be able to attend a weekend Mass, instead of the more than one thousand who came on a weekly basis prior to the COVID-19 shut-down. During that shut-down (as you may be aware), I underwent major abdominal surgery, and spent 15 days in hospital (Mulgrave Private - they were fantastic!). Home now for four weeks, my health is improving, but my strength is limited, so saying multiple Masses (much as Id love to) wont be a realistic option, at least for the time being. Im hoping parishioners will understand. However, Masses on the website (with huge thanks to cinematographer, Peter Evans and our readers) will continue, so parishioners and many others can maintain a prayerful Eucharistic link despite the restrictions which seem likely to be in place for some time. Yes, ten attendees each day isnt many but its a start. And registering etc. will be a pain! But the more responsible, accepting and conscientious we are, then the more quickly those ten will be able to be joined by others. So lets do it well, and as were often told these days: Were all in this together”. Fr. Kevin Dillon

“Give ém an inch, and they’ll take a yard!”. Translated into metric terms, this would be “Give ém a centimetre, and they’ll take a metre”.

Regardless of the measurements, we know the old saying means there will always be some people, be they children, teenagers or adults, who can be so carried away by new-found freedoms - “freedoms” from sensible

restrictions which were the secret of prior success - are thrown aside, with caution thrown to the winds, all too often with disastrous consequences.

“Schoolies” can often be one such example, and end-of-season footy trips another.

Ten at a time, but that’s ten more than a week ago. We need to be grateful that this is both possible and permissible, but we also need to make sure we don’t “blow it” by failing to respect those still very definite restrictions which still need to be observed for the good and safety of all.

For us, as a parish, that means parishioners wishing to attend a 10.15am Mass will have to book in by email ([email protected]). Those who do not have access to email can phone 0491 176 149 - but email is definitely preferable.

You will receive a confirmation of your “booking” (call it a “ticket” if you like), and you will need to bring that confirmation to the church in order to be admitted. It means washing hands, and observing the now familiar “social distance” rules.

Home now for four weeks, my health is improving, but my strength is limited, so saying multiple Masses (much as I’d love to) won’t be a realistic option, at least for the time being. But the more responsible, accepting and conscientious we are, then the more quickly those ten will be able to be joined by others. PARISH NOTICES

LIMITED RESUMPTION OF MASSES IN CHURCH The Step 1 relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions means that St Simon’s can now offer Masses in church again for up to

10 people. A Mass will be held every day at 10:15am from Monday to Sunday, starting on Monday, 18 May. This will complement the Masses available for viewing via the St Simon’s YouTube channel (accessible via the parish website).

Church attendance must be strictly controlled to meet state Government and Archdiocese of Melbourne regulations, so people wanting to attend MUST pre-register.

Please register (1) the full names of all intended attendees, (2) your telephone number, (3) your email address and (4) your preferred Mass day(s), by emailing to: [email protected].

If you don’t have access to email, you can phone 0491 176 149 - but email is preferred if possible.

You will receive a confirmation number in reply which you will need to have with you upon arrival at church. Please note that only those who have received a confirmation number will be allowed entry into the church.

More details/explanation can be found at www.stsimonsparish.com.au under the links near the top right of the home page titled “Link to Video Explaining How to Ask to Attend Mass”.

BIBLE STUDY via ZOOM on MATTHEW’S GOSPEL

COMMENCING 1st TUESDAY IN JUNE The program will run for 6 week nights from 7.30pm to 8.30pm

To Register: Email Loretta at [email protected] or call the Parish Office on 9764 4058.

CINEMA OR MOVIE CLUBS Any parishioner who would like to be involved with a Movie or Cinema Club (this is possible, even within our “Lockdown”

situation) is invited to contact Fr. Kevin (0421 777 360 or [email protected]). We will need six or more people to form a “club” where a book can be read or a movie viewed, with “members” coming together online for a discussion and

social catch-up.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED As you may have seen, the Parish is providing pre-recorded services online through our YouTube channel. This is proving an

important way for parishioners to experience a form of Mass. Now that we have finished the Easter services, we will be trying to do this for weekday services from Monday to Friday and for the Sunday services. We are seeking volunteers who can help with the video editing of the pre-recordings for the weekday Masses to help our Business Manager, Peter

Evans, who has been doing all the editing. (Peter will continue to do the Sunday Masses as this also has to be prepared for rebroadcast on The Light FM radio station.) As Peter is using a Mac running FinalCut Pro, his preference is for someone who

has this platform at home and has skills with it. If you think you can help, please contact Peter on 9764 4058 or [email protected] Thanks!

First reading Acts 8:5-8,14-17

Philip went to a Samaritan town and proclaimed the Christ to them. The people united in welcoming the message Philip preached, either because they had heard of the miracles he worked or because they saw them for themselves. There were, for example, unclean spirits that came shrieking out of many who were possessed, and several paralytics and cripples were cured. As a result, there was great rejoicing in that town.

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, and they went down there, and prayed for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit, for as yet he had not come down on any of them: they had only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 65(66):1-7,16,20 Second reading 1 Peter 3:15-18

Reverence the Lord Christ in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for people who ask you the reason for the hope that you all have. But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander you when you are living a good life in Christ may be proved wrong in the accusations that they bring. And if it is the will of God that you should suffer, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doing wrong.

Why, Christ himself, innocent though he was, had died once for sins, died for the guilty, to lead us to God. In the body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life.

Gospel John 14:15-21

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘If you love me you will keep my commandments. I shall ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you for ever, that Spirit of truth whom the world can never receive since it neither sees nor knows him; but you know him, because he is with you, he is in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come back to you. In a short time, the world will no longer see me; but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will understand that I am in my Father and you in me and I in you. Anybody who receives my commandments and keeps

them will be one who loves me; and anybody who loves me will be loved by my

Father, and I shall love him and show myself to him.’
