Located in the town of Kom-Ombo, about 28 miles north of Aswan, the

Temple, dating to the Ptolemies, is built on a high dune overlooking the

Nile. The actual temple was started by Ptolemy VI Philometor in the early

second century BC. Ptolemy XIII built the outer and inner hypostyle halls.

The outer enclosure wall and part of the court were built by Augustus

sometime after 30 BC, and are mostly gone. There are also tombs from theOld Kingdom in the vicinity of Kom-Ombo village.

The Temple known as Kom Ombo is actually two temples consisting of a

Temple to Sobek and a Temple of Haroeris. In ancient times, sacred

crocodiles basked in the sun on the river bank near here. The Temple has

scant remains, due first to the changing Nile, then the Copts who onceused it as a church, and finally by builders who used the stones for new

    buildings.

Everything is duplicated along the main axis. There are two entrances, two courts, twocolonades, two hypostyle halls and twosanctuaries. There were probably even two sets

of priests. The left, or northern side is dedicatedto Haroeris (sometimes called Harer, Horus theElder) who was the falcon headed sky god andthe right to Sobek (the crocodile headed god). The two gods are accompanied by their families.

They include Haroeris' wife named Tesentnefert, meaning the good sister and his son, Panebtawy.Sobeck likewise is accompanied by his consort,Hathor and son, Khonsu.

Philae Temple was dismantled and reassembled (on AgilikaIsland about 550 meters from its original home on PhilaeIsland) in the wake of the High Dam. The temple, dedicatedto the goddess Isis, is in a beautiful setting which has beenlandscaped to match its original site. It's various shrines and

sanctuaries, which include The Vestibule of Nectanebos Iwhich is used as the entrance to the island, the Temple of theEmperor Hadrian, a Temple of Hathor, Trajan's Kiosk(Pharaohs Bed), a birth house and two pylons celebrate allthe deities involved in the Isis and Osiris myth. The Victorian

world fell in love with the romance of the Temple. But at

night you can also visit the Sound and Light Show, a magicalexperience as floodlit buildings are silhouetted against thevolcanic rocks and water surrounding them. So today, Philaeis more fun then every before.

Dedicated to Horus, the falcon headed god, it was built during thereigns of six Ptolemies. We have a great deal of information aboutits construction from reliefs on outer areas. It was begun in 237 BCby Ptolemy III Euergetes I and was finished in 57 BC. Most of thework continued throughout this period with a brief interlude of 20

years while there was unrest during the period of Ptolemy IV andPtolemy V Epiphanes.

This is not only the best preserved ancient temple in Egypt, butthe second largest after Karnak. It was believed that the templewas built on the site of the great battle between Horus and Seth.Hence, the current temple was but the last in a long series of

temples build on this location. It is said that the original structurehousing a statue of Horus was a grass hut built in prehistoric times. At any rate, there is an earlier and smaller pylon of Ramesses IIwhich sits in a 90 degree angle to the current building.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Alexandrian Library) inAlexandria is a wonderful reincarnation of the famed ancientlibrary of Alexandria. The original library held the largestcollection of manuscripts in the world and was a greatcenter of learning for 600 years until it burned down in the

3rd century. The dramatic new library, resembling an angleddiscus or a great sundial, was designed by a Norwegianarchitect and cost about $200 million.

The Library of Alexandria is ofreligious significancebecause of its original role as a temple, its historicalassociation with such Christian theologians as Origen of
