ANyaixiòte pUvRvt! AiÉlapat! (äüsUÇm!-3-1-24)Anyädhiñöite pürvavat abhiläpät (Brahmasütram-3-1–24)

Meaning: The descending soul enters into plants animating other (souls),as in the previous cases, on account of scriptural declaration

This particular domain or adhikaranam among 192 Adhikaranas in Brahma sutra has its own special role to play. It is important because it is very much akin to relevant branch in modern times called Para - psychology and psychology. It tells about life after death. Most of the branches of science or discipline are focussed on life before death or how to live. Both pure sciences like mathematics, physics and social sciences like economics, political science, and psychology are more focussed on the human journey before one’s demise / death. We want success and prosperity in our life. For this all these branches of sciences give guidance and help us. But it is also necessary to connect us to life after death. Now after so much research, evidences collected and documentation done, a reality check has been conducted. Life after death also is a proven a fact now. We cannot brand it as myth or something illusion. It cannot be said so. Now much research is going on in this field in many other universities across the world. This particular Adhikarana tells how a traveller / Jeevatma / Individual soul conducts its journey without a big bag that is our gross body / Sthula Shareera. The previous body is burnt into ashes. Now he is with his subtle body and travelling freely with subtle parts of his sensory organs like Pancha Prana, Antahkaraëa Catuñöaya (Manas, Buddhi, Ahamkara, Chitta) and with Karmendriyas, subtle form of

Jnanendriyas. Further, he is moving from one loka to another loka, i.e from Agni loka/Bhu loka to Deva loka, from Deva loka to Vaayu loka, from Vaayu loka to Surya loka and he comes back. He is called as Ishtadhikaari (an eligible aspirant) who does auspicious activities, service activities and welfare activities which are beneficial to all co-travellers around him. He will have the privilege of coming to this Earth with human body which is the real proper instrument for sadhana. The human body is the only body which is addressed to Sun god i.e. solar and lunar cosmic rays are connected to this body. This body has 72000 nadis in structure which acts as antenna to suck the cosmic lunar and solar rays or Soma Surya Rashmis. So while coming back it is very difficult to cross those stages. According to many references in the Chandogya and Kaushitaki Upanishad, this commuter/person of subtle journey comes to aether and from aether to clouds, from clouds to vegetations. Those grains or fruits are eaten by male, so they will be in that body waiting for the last station that is in the female body / Stree / Naari Shareeram. Having stayed for 9 months in mother womb, one comes to conduct his journey with new big bag / Nootana Shareera / Sthula Shareera / Gross body. That is how this whole mechanism of rebirth takes place. Again obstacles take place while crossing from one stage to another, as he is already vulnerable to

both sorrow and happiness. If that traveller stays in the paddy and that paddy is cut, naturally that independent traveller will be hurt. So this Jeeva will be vulnerable for damages i.e. burning or pounding etc. Modern approach may raise the question here. But there is no answer to them.

Again when they are in male body what is their position? For example, in some body, some jeevatma is staying in the jeeva kosha/cell. We know human body is an abode of innumerable cells which come and go. That is how all those cells never stay permanently. That is what our bio-science tells us. In this mechanism, one cell will have an opportunity to enter the female body in her womb, then proceeds “Panchamyam aahutau aapaha purushavat shobhavanti” (In its fifth offering water becomes purusha). This is compared to a sacrifice or homa i.e. prajanana / reproduction homa. This mechanism is so sanctified that male and female must be so responsible because they are accommodating a great traveller who is an independent traveller coming according to his punya and paapa of his previous lives or Praarabdha karma. With this sense of responsibility, if male and female behave even their internal life will be sanctified and they can give a very healthy progeny to the society. With that sense of responsibility if they behave, the reproduction / prajanana will be great. It will be as great as performing soma yaaga or some great mahayajna. That is what is projected here. So this type of sublimated idea about reproduction may make society free from all types of sexual evils which are normal

nowadays. Hence it helps in psychology also. Psychological survey tells us that our teenagers are so much vulnerable to temptations at Kaumara avastha / tender age. Due to over activation of pituitary causes loss of amrita granthi or pineal. So nowadays college going boys and girls without knowing scientific understanding commit all types of blunders in their day to day life, thereby purity of mind is lost.

If we give this healthy food stuff of spiritual insight about male and female body, they can play a role as a divine / great instruments for divine / healthy progeny and preservation for family traditions. All these things pertaining to psychology and parapsychology will help create healthy society.

So we have two houses, one house here and another house there. Those who do auspicious activities here will be very good after death. After death those who smoothly come and take human life will be very healthy and good. That is how whole thing is interconnected, life after death and life before death. Ultimately it results in establishment of healthy society and healthy family traditions and healthy progeny. So here sutras like Yonih Shareeram are deliberately and skilfully composed by Vyasa Maharshi. So, with this much healthy insight about prajanana / reproduction we must guide our new generation to establish a healthy society. Thus, we can say that this is important prajanana yoga.

Arogyadhama Success StoriesSection E - An Improved Case of Spinal Disorders

He was afflicted by diabetes, hypertension, pain in both knee joints, shoulder pain, low back pain and hip joint pain. And all of this combined with weakness, a total lack of energy. That appeared to be more than most patients’ share of their problem at age 52. After battling it out these issues for a decade, Mr. Keshav Raju (name changed), aged 62, came to Arogyadhama in September 2015. In addition, he had bad breath and occasional gastritis. He is on regular medication. The low back pain aggravates when walking and gives relief when resting. The pain in the right shoulder is there since many years.

Diagnosis: Diabetes, hypertension, knee pain, shoulder pain and back pain.

During his week-long stay at Arogyadhama, he underwent various yoga practices based on Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy (IAYT) which comprised a special yoga module designed specifically to relax, strengthen and make the person more flexible at the body and mind level and to achieve total wellbeing. In addition, Pranayama, Cyclic Meditation, Mind Sound Resonance Technique, and relaxation techniques were included in the schedule. Lectures on lifestyle and dietary management information were organised to ensure better lifestyle for overall health. He was taught certain special techniques which are designed to arrest and eventually minimise or altogether eliminate pain and resolve his back and neck problems. He was also trained to perform certain Kriyäs which cleanse the body of toxins.

His schedule used to start at 5:30 am with pranayama and meditation followed by various activities that continued till 7:30 pm. These activities included special techniques (asanas, loosening exercises and relaxation techniques) designed to reduce pain. In order to enhance his relaxation and calmness of mind special meditation techniques were administered (cyclic meditation, trataka and mind sound resonance technique). Among the koshas that proved to be of considerable help to him were Manomaya Kosha and Annamaya Kosha. His parameters were monitored on a daily basis to keep track of his progress.

Condition on Discharge: The participant was relaxed and better after his stay in Prashanti, Arogyadham. There has been a consistent improvement in all his vital and clinical parameters. Improvement in Brahmari time and straight leg raising have been positively recorded. Details of assessments before and after yoga therapy are furnished below:

T2DM with Diabetic Retinopathy (Left eye >Right eye) with left eye Macular Degeneration, Essential Hypertension, Geographic Tongue, Osteo Arthritis of both Hip Joint

Health issues are inescapable while we graduate into old age. But even for an understanding aged person, the number of health issues he could perhaps take in his stride would have a ceiling beyond which he will not be able to endure. One person who came close to this category was perhaps Mr. Sagar (name changed), who at 63, had a rough ride in life so far as his health was concerned. Mr. Sagar suffered from 10 different ailments over the past two decades.

Diabetes struck him 23 years ago when he was just 40. He was a case of diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration which is an eye disorder that slowly destroys sharp, central vision. It is most common in senior citizens. About 15 years later he developed hypertension. Around the same time, he also developed hypothyroidism. He took medicine for this for three years and then stopped. Yet a few years later he was afflicted with oral thrush which is certainly a minor problem if you're healthy. But if you have a weakened immune system, symptoms of oral thrush may be more severe and difficult to control.

In 2010, he was laid low by inflammatory arthritis which is a condition that affects your immune system. This means that your body's defence system starts attacking your own tissues instead of germs, viruses and other foreign substances, which can cause pain, stiffness and joint damage. The same year he underwent a cataract surgery of both eyes. He was also suffering from vertigo. In the past six months, he has been suffering from pain in both hip joints which increases while driving and decreases while walking.

He was diagnosed with T2DM with Diabetic Retinopathy (Left eye >Right eye) with left eye Macular Degeneration, Essential Hypertension, Geographic Tongue, Osteoarthritis of both Hip Joints.

During his stay of 2 weeks at Arogyadhama, he underwent Yoga Practices based on the integrated approach to yoga therapy which is a special yoga module prepared for Diabetes mellitus ailments in our campus based on yoga research.

He was made to practice breathing exercises for his Hypertension, sukshma vyayama for his hip joint pain along with yogasanas like Ardha matsendrasana, vakrasana, trikonasana, parivrittakonasana etc along with kriyas (Yogic external detoxification techniques) like vamana dhouti (cleansing upper gastrointestinal tract) and laghu sanhka prakshalana (intestinal cleansing technique). Abhyantara kriyas like agnisara and nauli kriya were also included in the list of practices he was taught to practise. He was given a diabetic diet which included boiled /raw vegetables as a major portion. In order to give total rest to his body and mind, he was made to practice Cyclic Meditation and MSRT (Mind Sound Resonance Technique). Counselling sessions were held for him to sublimate his suppressed emotions. He was also practicing jatru trataka for his retinopathy 4 times/day. He was taught a sleep technique to overcome his disturbed sleep. Lectures on lifestyle and dietary management were organised. Thus keeping his overall health condition in mind he was put through a planned yoga module most appropriate for him.

Parameters: During his stay of 2 weeks, there was a marked improvement in his blood sugar level. His Inj. Insulin was reduced by 40 units, hip pain improved by 50%. He now gets sound sleep and the feeling of lethargy is gone completely. The vital parameters are as given below:

Introduction

The title could be enigmatic; physiology is hard enough, what is this ‘reverse physiology’? We shall present a definition and some examples of this reversal. Let us look at a know example which is close to this. There are some wonderful examples of reverse psychology: “Reverse psychology is a technique involving the advocacy of a belief or behaviour that is opposite to the one desired, with the expectation that this approach will encourage the subject of the persuasion to do what actually is desired: the opposite of what is suggested. This technique relies on the psychological phenomenon of reactance, in which a person has a negative emotional reaction to being persuaded, and thus chooses the option which is being advocated against. The one being manipulated is usually unaware of what is really going on” [Wikipedia]. All of us who had the questionable privilege of raising children know this only too well: when you want certain behaviour from a child/young adult (sometimes, the old ones too!), you say the opposite of required behaviour. The child reacts opposite to what was said, and that is exactly the behaviour that you wanted!

Reverse physiology takes the same path: you put the body into many twists and turns for which it is not meant, and lo and behold, it reverts back to homeostasis or healthy working! For example, the body and the spine are not built for ardhamatsendrasana: the half twist of Yogi Matsendra. One maintains the position for a short time, perhaps a minute. On ‘untwisting’, the knots in the spine seem to resolve and we feel better. Thus, in reverse physiology, one performs functions that seem contradictory to the problem on hand (or, at the back!); however, the practice lets physiology back to normal. We shall see some examples of such a ‘reverse’ response in what follows.

Yoga Asana Practices

In asana practices, muscles are stretched and the stretch is maintained for a short time (say, one minute). It should be understood clearly that muscles are not meant to be stretched in such a fashion; muscles are built to carry weight. When one is in a gym, this is the focus of activity: muscle building. However, in most Yoga asanas, we stretch the muscles and along with it, the tendons connected to the muscles [figure 1]. Tendons tear easily if stretched too much (an unscientific statement; however, it happens!). So in asana practice, one should be careful not to overstretch since tendon tear takes a long time to heal. Then, why should we stretch tendon and the muscles associated? Well, there is a very good reason for this: by stretching, muscle control improves. Since over-stretching is to be protected, tendons and muscles provide copious feedback to the brain to reduce the stretch! This feedback

and consequent response of the muscle are important components for improving muscle control. Thus, though tendon and muscles are not meant to be stretched, we can bring back proper control to the muscle through stretch – a classical case of reverse physiology!

Two things are important in a healthy muscle: strength and control. One without the other portends problems; in cases of rigidity, tremor or uncoordinated movements of muscles, muscle control is important. These aspects could be achieved through proper stretch, speed of stretch and maintaining the stretch for a short time. These are dealt with in books on Yoga Physiology [1].

Pranayama Practices

Most people are under the impression that during sirsasana (head stand), blood flow to the brain improves; sorry, this is not scientifically validated. Actually, a brief inverted posture does nothing to the blood flow to brain. Blood flow to the brain is well controlled. Only jet fighter aircraft pilots go through profound changes in their brain blood flow while in a deep dive or while ascending at high-speed. During such manoeuvres, at high gravitational forces, the control mechanism of the brain fails to protect the brain and hence, all fighter pilots wear protective gear. In short, under normal conditions of asana practice, no change in brain blood flow is observed during reverse postures

[2]. Further, breathing oxygen-rich air does not improve blood supply to the brain either. Now we can bring in principles of reverse physiology to improve brain blood supply: by inhaling small amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2). This is an interesting phenomenon not measured in a lab till recently [3]. With inhalation of small quantities of CO2, the brain experiences increased CO2 in the blood and immediately it tries to obtain more oxygen by two means; one by increasing the lumen of the blood vessels of the brain and second, by increasing the supply of blood to the brain.

Increased CO2 in blood could easily be achieved by holding breath for around 20 seconds. Since there is no oxygen intake during breath holding and the cells are still releasing CO2, the brain gets into protective mode; the above two activities are initiated. The blood vessel diameter in the brain increases and more blood is received by the brain. When normal breathing is initiated after breath holding, brain is inundated with oxygen. This is an easy, safe and simple way of increasing oxygen to the brain and could be practiced a few times a day. Hold the breath after exhale (bahir kumbaka) for 20 seconds and

Mar 2018 29

lo and behold, brain blood flow increases. This is again a reverse physiology, whereby you inject a small overdose of CO2 to brain to increase oxygen uptake! This could be practiced by anyone, anytime and for people with memory loss, dementia and such other age-related and other trauma problems, this will be of immense help. This is recommended for all interested in brain blood vessel health too.

Meditation

A question might arise: do we need to quieten the mind and meditate? The nature of the mind is to think, execute and enjoy the fruits of action! We are going against the grain of the mind if we sit to meditate; it becomes obvious in a matter of a few minutes when mind seems to wander more than usual! It is said that the quality of mind improves from a daily practice of meditation; you could sit quietly and let the mind wander or simply attend to only one stimulus at a time, for example, just observe the movement of the air as breathing progresses.

Presently, many disorders are termed psychosomatic in nature: mind and our constant thinking keeps our body tense, resulting in many problems from pain to cardiac and immune related problems. A review provides evidence to support neurophysiologic changes during meditation at the cellular level and at global brain activity level [4]. Meditation seems to provide neural plasticity in the brain facilitating experience higher states of consciousness. These statements are not conclusive or precise, since brain is the most complex organ in the body and understanding its role in health and disease will take intense research. Further, states of consciousness and the role of Yoga in attaining these states are still theoretical constructs. However, these are the ultimate stages of human development and the practice of Yoga is vital in this development. Here also, going against of grain of incessant chatter of the mind, through reverse physiology manoeuvring we could get the benefit of psychosomatic health [5].

Conclusion

Nature is much smarter than us! Thus, we see protective mechanisms in the body are more efficient in enhancing an activity (through reversing direct processes) in the body; using these mechanisms effectively we can achieve many interesting results for both disease prevention and for health restoration. Of course, there is a limit to which we can utilize these protective mechanisms; we cannot and should not take bizarre twists and contortions and imagine our body could get better. In this age of social media exchanges, many weird advices float around; we need to be cautious to sift through this information jungle and look for physiologically based and proven ideas to implement any self-help program so that no untoward outcomes affect us beyond repair. Careful analysis, consulting a good medical physiologist and implementing in slow stages are all required for a disorder-free life.

Cancer Control made easyThe prevention and control of cancer can be made easy, if we can know about the causes for cancer. All ailments have their origin in mind as Adhi. All non-communicable diseases are invariably originated in the human psyche. Cancer is one such ailment.

Cancer is at several levels. At the psychic level it is the cancer due to envy and envy is often due to negative comparison. The Next cause for cancer at the social level is corruption. At the physical level, the cancer is very often due to pollution. All causes crystallized into a major ailment at the body level is cancer killing the person slowly.

All the causes can easily be prevented, controlled and regulated. If only the minds are trained to love all, it is easy to avoid envy which is cancerous. Practice of love purifies the mind, ennobles the mind and divinizes it. If everybody and everything in the Universe is wholeheartedly loved, cancerous evils causing the Adhi can be eliminated. If Adhi is avoided, automatically Vyadhi or sickness of the body can also be prevented. Corruption is a cancerous evil killing the society. If only the individuals practice honesty, it is very easy to protect the social body from the cancerous corruption. Honesty is a negative virtue practiced out of fear of losing the good reputation. It is negative

because normally people want to build an image of themselves as good and honest people. Integrity is a positive virtue cultivated out of conviction. People like Mahatma Gandhi practiced it on account of their steadfast faith in the principle of truthfulness. If all individuals lead a transparent life without ever resorting to hypocrisy, the cancerous corruption can be eradicated at the social level.

For the physical comfort, very often we tame the nature and interfere with the functioning of the five elements. Thereby, we cause friction which in turn causes environmental pollution. This pollution adds to the cancerous envy, societal corruption and the friction with the nature. By leading a life in tune with nature, in tune with truth and in tune with love, there will never be any cancerous evil.

Yoga, therefore, prescribes a simple way of life with regular habits, light diet, a few yoga postures and Pranayama. Yoga is a simple way of life. By resorting to it, all can lead a peaceful life without any fear of cancer.
