Optometry Conference 2 017 Evidence-Based

Flinders University City Campus, Victoria Square, Adelaide

PRESENTED BY FLINDERS UNIVERSITY OPTOMETRY 10-11 JULY 2017 43.5

22.5T

I welcome you to the 2017 Evidence-Based Optometry Conference, Flinders University’s fourth annual two-day conference for Optometrists.

Day one is devoted to providing Optometrists with the skills to practise evidence-based optometry. These include morning sessions on the importance and fundamental concepts of Evidence-based Practice (EBP). “The future of floaters – Have we found a cure? Analysing the evidence to answer clinical questions” will follow a step by step case review, demonstration and clinical implications. Then Professor Fiona Stapleton will present the Tony Adams Medal Keynote Lecture, “Can contact lens-related microbial keratitis be eliminated?” followed by a Q&A session.

In the afternoon, Professor Stapleton will deliver a seminar on “Management of keratitis”. It will be followed by an interactive computer workshop designed to empower optometrists to access and use scientific literature.

Day two is devoted to the discussion of 12 clinical issues. In these, the evidence will be presented and discussed so that Optometrists can take this knowledge back to apply in practice. These clinical issues span four Masterclass areas: Ocular therapeutics, Paediatrics and Binocular Vision, Myopia Management and Disease Management.

ZEISS are proud to support the EBO Conference as Presenting Partner.

K ONRAD PESUDOVS - CONFERENCE CHAIR

Professor Konrad Pesudovs graduated in Optometry from the University of Melbourne (1990) and spent two years in private practice before joining Ophthalmology at Flinders University where he ran hospital-based optometry clinics and conducted research. He completed a PhD in 2000. Konrad won an NHMRC Fellowship to undertake post-doctoral training in the UK and the US. In 2004, Konrad returned to Ophthalmology at Flinders University as a NHMRC funded Clinical Research Fellow and was awarded an NHMRC Centre for Clinical Research Excellence grant. His areas of research interest are ophthalmic outcomes research incorporating optical, visual and patient-reported outcome measurement. During his career he has received over $9million in competitive grant funding and published over 200 papers. However, he has been extremely clinically active developing expertise in disease management, low vision and contact lenses. In 2009, Konrad was appointed Foundation Chair of Optometry and Vision Science, where he is responsible for the Optometry Discipline, the double degree program and a multi-million dollar research program. In 2016, he was named a Silver Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and was elected as president of the Australian College of Optometry.

Fiona is a clinical scientist with expertise in epidemiology and clinical research in the fields of corneal infection, dry eye and contact lens related disease.

She holds numerous memberships and executive affiliations with scientific organisations, is a regular reviewer for a range of journals, belongs to the international editorial board of three journals, has over 200 peer-reviewed publications, has contributed 19 chapters to textbooks and published one book. She is an international advisor to the Asia Cornea Society Infectious Keratitis study.

She is vice president of the International Society for Contact Lens Research. In 2011 she received the University of Houston College of Optometry award for Distinguished Research in Cornea & Contact Lenses and in 2012 she received both the American Academy of Optometry Max Shapero and Garland Clay awards and delivered the British Contact Lens Association Pioneers Lecture. In 2015, she received the British Contact Lens Association Medal. She is a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association, Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a Diplomate of the Cornea, Contact Lenses and Refractive Therapies section of the American Academy of Optometry.
