Take an historic journey with us next season! Soundstreams started life by producing the only Canadian celebration of Igor Stravinsky’s 100th birth year in 1982. In 2021, Arvo Pärt turns 86, and Steve Reich joins us for an 85th birthday celebration, with music performed by their greatest interpreters. Pärt’s monumental Stabat Mater is conducted by legendary Estonian Tõnu Kaljuste; and Reich’s iconic Drumming, written 50 years ago, is performed by Nexus celebrating their 50th anniversary. Some members of Nexus have worked with Reich from his very beginnings. Only a year after Soundstreams was founded, another luminary, Québec composer Claude Vivier, was murdered in Paris at the age of 34. Our continuing exploration of his rich legacy includes vintage performances of Love Songs, Shiraz, and Cinq chansons pour percussion. These masterpieces are complemented in the series by compelling new works from Paul Frehner, Robin Dann, Christopher Mayo and others. Storytelling remains the heart and soul of our programming. Ancient Chinese legends inspire world premieres of two staged works: Dragon’s Tale with music by Ka Nin Chan, and Book of Mountains and Seas, composed by Huang Ruo. And Electric Messiah evolves in surprising and delightful ways, exploring universal themes through a contemporary lens. Canadian music is also taking an historic journey when Soundstreams headlines a Vivier Festival at London’s prestigious Southbank Centre. You’re wanted on this season’s voyage of discovery—all you need do is subscribe, and you’ll be coming too!

Claude Debussy once said “Music is the silence between the notes. The music is not in the notes, but in the silence in between.” Songwriter, singer and musician Robin Dann guest curates an evening of music and performance inspired by the quietest sounds in the world around us. Robin's recent trip to the Arctic Circle plays a major role in the show, and only strengthened her certainty that magic lies in quiet. Let the multifaceted power of small sounds wash over you—after all, silence is golden.

Robin Dann

Claude Vivier’s travels to Bali and the Iranian city of Shiraz in the 1970’s was for him an initiation into mysticism and poetry. Upon his return to Canada, he captured his experiences through two brilliant works: Shiraz for solo piano, and the Balinese influenced Cinq chansons pour percussion. These travels led to an intensely personal voyage; Love Songs, for seven singers, runs the gamut from childhood songs and nursery rhymes to the deepest contemplation of our place in the universe. Couple this with an homage to Claude Vivier by Christopher Mayo, and you have an evening of pure magic.
