Nordea Group is the largest financial institution of Northern Europe, which was founded through consolidation of the oldest Nordic banks: Merita Bank (Finland), Nordbanken (Sweden), Unibank (Denmark) and Christiania Bank og Kreditkasse (Norway).
Once such consolidation of these companies into single Group was completed, from 2001 onwards it started operating under the brand name of Nordea which stems from the combination of two words, “Nordic” and “Idea” – so a bank of Nordic ideas came into being.
