As your Club Committee, we felt thatas this is a special year we would like todo something which had ifs focus outside the Club, and demonstrated that wecould do something as a group which wasn't totally focussed on ourselves orrunning.

In addition, as a large number of you will know, during 1999,2 of orClub members (Arthur Toomer and Geoff Dawes) were both diagnosed as having a cancerof the prostate. (See later for details of their progress).

Therefore the Club Committee has decided that they would like to support 'TheProstate Cancer Charity ina number of ways throughout the year, and we hopethat we have yoursupport in this venture.

The charity itself, which we have researched and believe to be an organisationworth supporting, works in three ways:

1) It funds a small research team,

2) Provides support to mendiagnosed with cancer of the prostate and theirfamilies via a network of local contacts across the country, and

3) Runs a helpline which anyone can access for information, support etc

It is also in the businessof raising awareness about the disease, making peopleand the government aware of the small amount spent on research/screening.

It is also associated with the campaign that has been running in the Dairy Mail.

Ways in which Club members can help:

1) We would like to invite all those taking part in the London, or any other marathon, to consider whetherthey would raise money for this charity, through their own contacts. Sponsor forms and free T-shirts will bemade available to runners.

2) Support our 10kand 10 mile race organisers to look atways in which we might usethese two events forraising moremoney, eg. by adding £1 to each entry (?).

3) By bringing other ideas to the Committee

4) We will be seeking publicity inthe local press and hope to have material andthe sponsorship forms available fairly shortly.

What about a target of £10000 over the year??!!

Chairman's ChatWelcome to the first Lordshill News of the century, or at leastof the year.Judging by the recent running efforts of a number of our members, everyone musthave fully recovered from anyChristmas excess and the New Year celebrations and arenow getting back to their slim racing shapes. I am writingthis a few hours after seeing a great effort by our scoring men's team in gaining second place in the CC5 at FarleyMount, with Rob Tanner, Mike Bisson, Graham Bungay and Guy Cheeseman all in the first 10 and Jim Shepperd nottoo far behind as the fifth scorer. Well done all of you! SiouxThirtle also did very well for the women's team, finishing in second place, although her fellow team members were a bit further down the field. A bigthank you to all whoturned out to marshal and assiston what was a gloriously sunny morning. There isonly one more CC5 to go, in two weeks timeon 5th March, and we are in with a chance of a good final position, so let's makea big effortto be thereand to showsome of the larger clubs whatwe arecapable of.Although the attendance at CC5s has been good, we had a disappointing season in the Hampshire Cross CountryLeague with a full men's team onlyout on one occasion. I am sure that those who did run enjoyed the variousevents but it would be niceto see a few more Lordshill vests out on the courses; although many people seem to beworried aboutthe high standard of the front runners in particular at the Hampshire races, the courses aregenerallya lot easier to run on than the CC5s and anyone who worries about getting plastered with mud would probably findthe Hampshire series preferable. Anyway, no need to worry about that now, there's the summerand the RRlOs to

iOk forward to!

nne annual Club bash and awards 'do' went very well, as ever, with a good turn out for the new venue. Perhaps theDJ could have been a bit more inspired in hischoice of music and a bit moreconsiderate of ageing ears by turningthe volume down a notch or two, but there was plenty of food, space and seating and even a cheap beer offer forthose going for quantity rather than quality drinking. You shouldall now be awareof the Club's plan to support a charitythis year, unless of course you skip page 1 andturn straightto this column, and I hope as many members as possible will feel able to assist, either by collectingmoney for runners getting sponsored for the London Marathon and any other races, or by being sponsored yourselves. Having members personally affected by prostatecancerdoes give us a dear focus for our efforts so let'smake it a big success. There are already a number of trips to events planned and all members are welcome to join in- just check the detailsin newslettersor on the noticeboard and make contact with either Geoff Dawes or Paul Burnage, or any other Committee member for that matter. The loonies have already sampled the Stonehenge Stomp and the Meon Valley Plodbut there are now the Bramley 10/20, Rhayader 20 and the Grizzly coming up (although the latter was oversubscribed withindays of the entry forms being issued) so there are plenty of chances to wear yourselvesaway.Don't just look at those running shoes, get out there and use them!Derek

<J The Lordshill-MilIr Bash - Saturday 15th January 2000

Maybe we have finally found the ideal venue for ourannual Prize-giving and Social evening. Certainlyeveryone who attended seemed happy...but then maybe that was alcohol induced! Anyway, please letus know yourthoughts onthe choice. If 'AAr Cs' gets universal approval then perhaps we will use itagain in 2001.

Most of the awards presented, for the Bournemouth Ten Club Championships, were mentioned in thelast edition of Lordshill News. However, other awards are presentedonthe night and these arelisted below:

THE BRUSSELS iOK 19/12/99- Helen Kinntcte (on Locution)

You maynot know this, butyoung Helen Kinrade is currentlyonsecondment inBrussels. However, thewonders ofmodern technology means she'sstill in touch via the internet, andI received thisreportfrom herjust before Christmas, when we toohadasprinkling ofsnow. Readon. (Jim Shepperd)"..Just to let you know I completed my first 'foreign race' yesterday - the Brussels I0km...(which) isan annual event held the last weekend before Christmas. It is run through the Royal park verycloseto the Atomium (this isa giant sized atom built in the I950's....need I say more!).This year, my first year, the weather was changeable. I arrived and registered in the sun, avoided ashort shower of rain by hiding in the refreshment/changing rooms tent, went overto the start linein a snow blizzard, ran mostof the race wondering if I could possibly catch a sun tan, and crossedthe finishing line just before the snow really set in.The race itself was basically a two lap affair - with one or two changes between the two laps. Thecourse was a nightmare (or a challenge!) - you wereeither running up or down a hill I'm sure therewas no flat at all - except for the closing 100m. Most of the race was on very wide pavements oron

^bod hard tracks through lush green parkland or peaceful woods...so you don't cross the finish linetoo caked in mud.

Although there were lots of people around the course, it was astrange sensation not to hear clappingora 'well done' from these people, except as you crossed the finish line. The camaraderie betweenthe runners was great. I was encouraged around the last 3k bytwo Dutch blokes who, having finished the course decided to warm down byrunning to their cars via the course and encouraging a fewof us slow ones over the line. At least I think this is what they said - my Dutch isn't that good yet!Despite the hills and no training for the last month I managed aslow 56:36 (believe me I was grateful for coming in under the hour!). I'm not sure what the winning time was, butwith around 800 people entering I'm sure it was quite good. The medal was asimple affair, butthe can of fizzy pop as Ifinished the race was a welcome change to the usual mineral water.

Hope all is well and the training is still going splendidly. Things have been a little too busy to try andfit much running in, but hopefully after this weekend I've got the bug back! As for my next foreign"ace, and as an incentive to keep running, if I am still out here, there is a 20km race in March. I

Wrought I might give that ago.Say 'Hello' to all LordshilliansMerry Christmas and a sooooooper NewYear,Helen"

Club Running over the Festivities

'Oiere was plenty of club activity over the Christmas and New Year period. We first metup atthe John Dukes Race held on Southampton Common on the day afterChristmas Day, see reportabove, and then the annual slow run from the 'Sporting View' at the Sports Centre, Southamptonon the 28th December. Agroup of us gathered bythe putting green and then started offon aslow trot through the Sports Centre, GolfCourse, Hadrians Way and Chilworth Road to "TheClump Inn', which we managed to pass without stopping only because it was not open, and backthrough the woods for the important job of tasting the Sporfs beer. Starting on the drinking wasa little difficult as we had trouble waking up the landlord and getting him to open on time. Butenter the bar we did, if a little late and the important job of holding a draw for the clubs LondonMarathon Numbers took place. Result of which is reported elsewhere. As most people had extra days off this year to celebrate the millennium a number of informalruns took place. These included the Lordshill Ten Mile route on the last day of the century, a circular route from Lyndhurst down to Brockenhurst and back and Fritham to Abbotts Well for ataste of the waters and back to Fritham over the high heath land of the Forest. These informaltraining runs take place on most Sundays throughout the year. If you are interested in joiningin, keep your ears open on training nights. Or better still suggest one yourself. Many feet makelight work.RogerBradley

Sunday January 9th 2000Stubbington 10km.

For most of the entrants this was thefirst race of the new millenniumwhile for some like Mark Thompsonit was the first race of a fifth decade,Mark celebrated his 40th birthday onthe 9th January and ran the 10k in37.27 to show that his legs still hadthe running in them for a 67th place. After a heavy frost overnight the conditionsat the new iO.OO am start were excellent ifstill a bit cold. Bright sunshine with hardly

y breeze, ideal for running a PB which atast one of our members did. Mike Bisson's

93rd position in 38.14, gave him a PB by 17seconds.

This very flat 10k still attracts a lot of run=ners, with 814 finishers - 235 of whom werewomen. Overall winner was Alan Rowe fromGuernsey in 32.09, who also ran well the daybefore by coming second in the HampshireCross Country, at Staunton Country Park,Havant. Incidentally, another runner who didwell at Staunton was our own Paul Phillips,13th in 38.51, who was running for his firstclaim club, Southampton RC.Lordshill results at Stubbington were as follows:

Sunday January 16th 2000.13th Stockbridge XC Fun Event.

Two courses - one ofjust under eight miles and ashorter three miler. The eight mile course wasmainly on grass and muddy tracks with a few bits oftarmac to join the green and brown bits together. The day's events were open to more than just usrunners;joggers, walkers,mountain-bikers and cy-elo-erossers where all welcome at the start line out

side Stockbridge Town Hall. A staggered start withthe runners going off first and the cyclesleaving tenminutes afterwards, presumably with the instructions to knockover as manyrunnersas they couldon the way round. In fact because ofthe two hundred foot climbjustafter the start followed bya verymuddy ruttedstretch of track only the fittest and fastest riderscaught up with any of the runners. These very fitoff-road riders are very polite and give plenty ofwarning as they come up behind a runner so everybody arrived back safely back at the town hall. Aninteresting morning out in the lovely Hampshirecountry side. Give it a go next year. Both RogerBradley and Arthur Toomer tested the eight milecourse on behalfofall ofyou who will want to takepart in future years.Roger Bradley

LONDON MARATHON-and London Rejects!!

We at Lordshill had two London places on offer atthe draw on the 28th December, The first 2 namesout of the hat were Sue Jewsbury, and Mike Newman, who received the coveted places. Third namedrawn was John McGany, who later receiveda placevia our Club's BARR membership. Good luck withthe training....Ifyou're upset about not getting a number for thisyear's London through the ballot, at least some ofourmembers were lucky. Eight members of VictoryRoad Runners (Portsmouth) entered and not one received a number, although, as at Lordshill, the clubhad two numbers to allocate - so two out of the eightwill be running. Whilst on the subject ofMarathons, ifyou have been rejected and have not been allocateda club number why not help make up a large Lordshill entry for the Shakespeare Marathon which istwo weeks after theLondon onApril 30th at 1.00pm.Or ifyou fancy a shorter run there is a half marathon run in conjunction with the Ml distance

Sunday January 16th 2000 H.M.S.Collingwood 10k. Fareham.

A race which Lordshill runners, along with runnersfrom other local clubs, voted a miss was this new10k at Fareham - perhaps because it was staged toosoon after the Stubbington 10k. Won by a Vet.,Vince Stamp ofCity ofPortsmouth A.C., who camethird at Stubbington, mostofthe finishers appearedto have come from a H.M.S. somewhere or other.Knowing the flat courses thatthe Fareham, Gosportarea provide, perhaps this is a raceto try in the future.

Sunday January 22nd 2000Romsey 5 miler.

While a lot of Lorctehjl! runners where spendingthe weekend on long runs In preparation forthe spring Marathons, some of the raster Ladsand Lasses drove out to Romsey for it's verypopular five miler. Was it worth 'Getting yourkit on' Tor?. On a lovely Danuary morning suchas the 22nd, it certainly was. With a fast flatstart and flat finish with a few bumps in-between the courseseems to bring the bestout of most of the entrants. Our own GrahamBungay produceda PB finishing in 32.24. Therace was won by an unattached runner fromPortsmouth, Ronny Adams in 25.05 with ourown Keith Langford not too far behind in

^3.45. Other club results as follows.Robert Tanner 30.46Mike Bisson 30.48Dick Baines 30.57Graham Bungay 32.24Roger Bradley 37.00Adrian Allen 39.35Helen Backshell 40.42ArthurToomer also ran the race only hours before going into hospital for an operation. Having only taken four ofour membership to thispopular run/walk last year, fourteen, made the tripup the A36/A345 to Amesbury this January - notquite the forty-odd that Hardley Runners took, butperhapsnext year we can persuade more of you togive the day a try.Four distances are on offer that starttogetheranddisperse andconverge at various points, all, passingStonehenge at some point or other. No gun to setyou off- startwhen you like between nine and tenam and run, walk or trot the distance you feel thatyou can cope with 10k, 20k, 30k or 40k.It's a fun day with plenty of drink and food stationson the way roundand lovely sceneryto look atwhile you aremunching on a biscuit, Mars baroreven at one checkpoint, a hot dog. But beware. Itwas noticed this year that the two Lordsmll runnerswho stopped for a hot dog last year and sufferedonthe run in to Amesbury Sports Centre passed themby this year. Cooked food mightbe alright for walkers, but us runners can suffer.A good day out which provides, if you do one ofthelongerroutes, a friendly way to put in some milestowards thatspring marathon training.

Sunday Fehmary 13th 2000, Meon Valley Plod, 21 mile Cross Country.

What a lovely day for a run through the English country side; warm and sunny with only aslight breeze on the hill tops instead of the gale force winds of the previous week. I suspectthat not all the runners felt it was a lovely day as they crossed the finishing line after twentyone miles of what in lots of places was very heavy going under foot. Although there are noshowers at Meon Village Hall the organisers had thoughtfully provided a small pool to bathein, and a power hose to rinse down the rest of the mud acquired on the way round. The coursewas the same as previous years, up hill and down again including the famous climb up to thetop of Butser Hill and a few other climbs that may not be as high as Butser but are a lotsteeper. This year, as an added attraction, a farmer had placed two electric fences on theroute which had to be crossed as well as the usual styles. Lordshillwith double the entry thisyear had Keith Langford crossing the line in tenth place, and second vet40 in a time of 2-49.Dick Baines had to drop out after a pre-race jog around the village having activated a recurring leg injury, so second home for Lordshillwas Paul Burnage.

Sunday February 13th 2000 Team Solent 5k Road Race Southampton.

Fine, dry, clear, warm and sunny with blue skies and no wind - excellent conditions for thisfast out and back course in the heart of Southampton. Starting and finishing behind the Harbour Lights Cinema at Ocean Village the race took runners east under the Itchen Toll Bridge towards the old town Gas Works, sight of the new Dell. After a small loop runners followed the

S^ime route back along North Marine Parade, Endle Street and Canute Road to the finish. Oneof the quickest 5k courses in the UK attracting runners from all across the country, amongthem runners from Thames Valley Harriers and Newport. The winner by one second, in 14-34,was Stephen Sharp from Puma Thames Valley Runners way in front of the first local runner,MikeToomey of Southampton RunningClub who finish in 15-37. First women home was NicolaHaines-Jones of Newport Harriers in 17-09. All three Lordshill entrants did well with Mike Bis-son first home in 17-49 (41st), followed by Guy Cheesman 18-23 in (49th place) and GrahamBungay 18-32 (52nd place). Both Guy and Graham ran a Personal Best for the distance. A very good results for Lordshill RR,with approx. 200 finishers.

Cross-Country Series 1999-2000..THE CCS LEAGUE

Race No. 3. Dibden Enclosure

Sunday 16th January 2000Conveniently rearranged for the day after our NewYear Bash (!) we still managed to put in teams for thisCC5 even though most of us looked a little jaded!

The morning was cold and runners were glad to besent on their way, although we soon found a goodportion of mud, water and hills to sort out the hangovers. Our own Robert Tanner, running his first CCStook an early lead, along with Mike Bisson close by.

Unfortunately, due to a missing marshal, less than a^.lile from the finish, the front 3 runners were sent the

wrongway. Bythe timethey rejoined the course theiradvantage had been lost. This meant that some rearrangement of the results was agreed and we had 2 runners finishing in 1st place! This was fortunate forLordshill as Rob Tanner, well in the lead with a mileto go and finally finishing 18th, was restored to hisrightful 1st position. Good results were also recordedby Mike Bisson (6th) and Graham Bungay (7th) withPaul Burnage and Derek Goodchild completing theteam. Overall this gave our men's team a 2nd place onthe day, and are now only one point off 2nd placeEastleigh in the league.

Our women's team again saw a great run from SueThirtle in her consistent 2nd place in these events, with Laura Savill and Susan Shiell both putting in fast

lishes to complete the team. On the day ourSomen's team finished 5th, putting LordshiU's combined team placing in the league as 4th overall.

Race No. 4. Farley Mount

Sunday 20th February 2000This race is OUR event. We host it along with WessexRR, but try to put in teams too.

The route is short at 4.5 miles but quite arduous withvaried hilly terrain and plenty of mud in places!

Rob Tanner again ran well, finishing an impressive2nd after having lead for much of the race. Next Lordshill vest to cross the line was worn by Mike Bisson in5th, followed by Graham Bungay in 6th and GuyCheesman in 10th. Jim Shepperd completed the team.

Yet again Sue Thirtle crossed the line in 2nd, withinsight of the leading woman Sue Sleath of Hardley formuch of the race. After having lost (and retrieved) ashoe in the most muddy stretch of the race, Sue Jews-bury, covered in mud, managed to finish immediatelyin front of Susan Shiell - the two (more) Sue's makingup the Lordshill women's team.

Many thanks to all who turned out to marshal andhelp with this race. We actually had more marshalsthan we had jobs for in the end, and I apologise forthis. More ofyou could have run. Next year it wouldbe worth all marshals interested in running to bring kitfor a 'quick change' should the opportunity arise.

Thanks again.

Jim.

PS LAST RACE IN SERIES AT MANOR FARM

ON SUNDAY 5TH MARCH

Saturday Jan 15th 2000 Hampshire Cross Country 9k. Overton.

A 100% increase in Lordshills turnout for the Overton run - two last year - fourthis...all men. Where are the women on a Saturday afternoon? Lets hope next yearwe can field both a men's and women's team at all the Saturday fixtures.Overton is not an easy run, being three laps with quite a few ups and downs as thecourse winds its way up and down a scenic downland valley which lies to the southof the B3400 between Laverstock and Overton. First home for Lordshill was DerekGoodchild in 188th place followed by Mike Letheran 201st. Other placings were MikeNewman 225th and Roger Bradley 227th out of 234 finishers.Roger Bradley

T#te IZIZrO Series 2000

The dates and venues of the RR10 series have been PROVISIONALLY set for the coming year, and are shown below.

For any new members not familiar with the RR10 series of races, these are all held on Wednesday nights and are open to any member of the participating Clubs, which basically include allSouthampton clubs and several more outside the city limits. The races are all off-road and arebetween 4.5 and 5.5 miles long, mostly on forest tracks, grassland etc. and typically attractaround 200+ club runners. They are free to enter - each club pays its dues by hosting or co-hosting one of the events in which ifs runners cannot compete. As there are 10 races in the series, this means that we all have 9 free mid-week races available to run. Inevitably there is astrong social aspect and there is always a post-race 'watering hole' in the form of an allocatednub to drink to successes or drown your sorrows.

Otyway, here's this year's PROVISIONAL fixture list. Please note the back-to-backWednesdaysend Mav. beginningJune. This is to shorten the series slightly and to give shift-workers a chanceat some of the events.
