The purpose of this letter is to informyou of the. extraordinary ,care our sonreceived from the Freeport Fire Depart-ment on Thursday, June 14. Let usexplain.

At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Thurs-day, June 14, our son, Charles R. Yeates, had a car accident on Merrick Road inFreeport. He was extracted from the vehi-cle and transported to South Nassau Com-munities Hospital via the Freeport FireDepartment. Seems routine, however, unbeknownst to the Fire Department per-sonnel at the accident, Charles sustained a

broken neck, specifically a fractured C-i/c-2, , :

The careful .extraction and handling ofCharles' fragile condition by the rescue, workers of the Freeport Fire Department 'prevented Charles from becoming para-lyzed. Our many thanks to these rescueworkers, the Freeport Fire Departmenttraining procedures, and the Village ofFreeport.

Presently, Charles is recovering from-the required surgeiy with a positive prog-nosis. .

Someone to careThe call comes in, and word goes out among the

staff in the emergency room. "Incoming, cardiacarrest. Middle-aged male." At once, a team is alertand waiting. But as the minutes tick by, they lose, ifnot their readiness, their hope.

Then, suddenly, the ambulance arrives, and every-one springs to action. You arrive, lungs heaving, sur-rounded by technicians working on you. "Push. Wait.

'Push. Wait."You speed by other patients whose beds line the

darkened hallway and into a brightly lighted room, ful l of machinery and other staff. There is muchrushing in and out.

But then they all leave, their eyes filled with shockand sadness. A patient whispers, "Is he going to beall right?" to a passing nurse, who shakes her headsilently and goes back to her desk and her paper-work.

The doctor calls out the time to a clerk. The police-man highest in rank makes a report. One person triesto lighten the mood, but no one responds. They haveseen this so. many times, but it still affects them.

Someone goes to the waiting room to tell yourwife. She screams and faints. When she comes to,she vomits, and someone has to hold her, and some-one has to clean up the mess. Someone else has torestrain your children from coming to see you.

Meanwhile, "housekeeping" is busily-scrubbing tomake the room sterile again. A white sheet is drapedover your body, pulled down to show your face.Someone wheels your wife in a wheelchair to viewyour body from the doorway. She sinks down intofhe chair and sobs silently.

Outside in the muggy evening, your children leanagainst a railing and stare at nothing, in shock.Someone is talking to them, but can they listen?

Almost every week the same scene plays out. Andevery day the same unsung heroes are there to try todefeat death, and if not, to take away its sting.

Oil spill no cause for concernAt about 2 a.m. Monday, August 27,

fishing vessel Terry Lee began to takein water through its hull. In an effort tode-water the boat to keep it from sink-ing, explains Coast Guardsman EarlLingerfeld, oil was released into thewater. The owner of Terry Lee wasgiven a warning because the releasedoil was estimated to be less than tengallons, says Guardsman Lingerfeld. The fire department responded toreports from neighbors who noticed the

smell of oil coming from the canal.A concerned resident suggested that

the oil leak came from the sunken boatFlo, which lies on village property atthe bottom of Woodcleft Canal. Thisrumor is untrue, as the Coast Guardhas received no reports of leakagefrom Flo since about a year ago, ,saysLt. Kevin Carroll. Flo is not a hazardto navigation and is therefore notunder Coast Guard jurisdiction, notesLt. Carroll

To the Editor,Thank you for a l lowing me the

opportunity to publicly thank all of themany people and businesses that helpedstart the new Rowing Division of theFreeport Police Athletic League.

Our first season has been an over-whelming success due to the generosityof so many. Thanks and recognition tothe Freeport Recreation Center forallowing us the use of their pool and

their lifeguard, Meagan, when ascer-ta in ing the swimming abi l i ty of ourfuture rowers.

Much of our success is due to thegenerosity and genius of-Frank Hunter,of Frank Hunter Marine on WoodcleftAvenue. He gave ideas and equipmentequally, and both were of great impor-tance.

Thanks to Dominick and' Fred ChallMarine on Atlantic Avenue for theirgenerous donation of paddles and lifejackets. Rowing and paddling would be

impossible without both.'Our h e a r t f e l t t hanks to Je r ry

Tedeschi. who made time to contribute, organize and solicit help-for this newdivision.

Many thanks to B. A. Schoen and theBaldwin Bay Colony Rowers for theuse of their whaleboat and their mostseasoned coxswain. The kids lovedboth.

I would especially like' to thank theFreeport Police Athlet ic League andmost importantly Jack Lundergan. To

be able to introduce k ids to a - w a t e rsport that 1 love so much, and to gel somuch joy from the i r en joymen t , j u s tmade my summer (and then some).

The sport and comradeship of rowingbuilds strong bodies and bonds, h cre-ates character and teaches the benefitsof pull ing together as a team. We couldnol have put th is endeavor togetheranywhere else but in the Vi l l age ofFreeport.

Both candidates have plans to restorethe county to its former pre-eminence ifelected.

Mr. DiNapoli would:•Reform the assessment process, which

he terms "ineffective and inefficient," tosave up to $ 132 million.

'Develop a long-term debt managementplan to reduce the county's debt by up to$700 million.

•Reduce duplicative services betweenthe county and the towns, villages andcities.

•Expand the NIFA-mandaled reportingrequirements to allow for a more compre-hensive assessment of the state of thecounty.

"Create economic empowerment zonesto stimulate economic development andfamily-sustaining jobs.

•Preserve natural resources by creating acounty Office of Environmental Protec-tion.

Mr. Suozzi would:"Save taxpayers $100 million by reduc-

ing the workforce and increasing produc-tivity, eliminating the "Patronage Tax,"disqualify political party chairmen fromserving in any county position, hire 100professionals to eliminate outside contractsand institute an Employee Evaluation andSpecific Performance Report system.

"Establish an advisory board to recom-mend consolidation of county-ownedproperty.

"Streamline the police budget to save$40 million while enhancing police andpublic safety.

"Call for a referendum to preserve Nas-sau's remaining open space and protect itsdrinking water. He would curtail the scopeof development of unused land at SUNYWestbury.

As Mayor in Glen Cove, he has put inplace plans to rejuvenate the waterfront;made plans to prevent erosion; closed theGlen Cove incinerator at no cost to the tax-payers and established a commuter ferryfrom Glen Cove to Wall Street in Manhat-tan, taking an estimated 300 cars off theroad..

He obtained millionsof dollars for the Long Island Bus systemafter the county cut money for critical pub-lic transportation services. He is a strong:proponent of gun control.

"No kid ever grows up saying to him-self, 'When I grow up I want to be theNassau County Executive, '" MayorSuozzi said when he announced his candi-dacy. "I certainly didn't. I never thoughtabout it when I was in college, or when Iwas in law school, or when I worked as aCPA or as an attorney. I never even gave ita thought during my first six years asmayor.

"But now," he continued, "after wit-nessing first hand years of fiscal misman-agement on a scale so larue that it has

nearly ruined our county, I've come torealize that virtually everything I've donein my professional life has prepared me forthis job. I am ready to put my skills andmy vision to work."

Mr. DiNapoli has written to Nassau res-idents: "As a third generation LongIslander and lifelong Nassau resident. Iknow too well the failures of our lacklustercounty government.

"At the age of 18." he continued. "I waselected to the Mineola school board. I ranbecause I wanted to make a difference forpeople and give back to the community.Fifteen years ago. I ran for the New YorkSlate Assembly to get results for all of

.Nassau County. Working with Democratsand Republicans, we've accomplished alot."
