2003 GEM Workshop 25 June, 2003
CISM: Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling
NSF Science and Technology Center (STC): Funded September 2002
GOAL: Develop a series of ever-improving versions of a comprehensive physics-based numerical model that describes the space environment from the Sun to the Earth.
USES:• Scientific tool for increased understanding of the complex space
environment.• Specification and forecast tool for space weather prediction.• Education tool for teaching about the space environment.
MANDATE: in the National Space Weather Program.

CISM progress in 2002/03
CISM’s first year was largely spent in planning and getting organized.
• Sept 2002: Funding arrives.• Sept 2002: Initial “kick-off” planning meeting.• March 2003: First Advisory Council Meeting.• May 1, 2003: First annual report submitted. • May 29/30, 2003: First annual site visit by NSF.• July 28 – August, 8 2003: CISM Summer School.• Sept 2003: First CISM graduate student retreat.• Sept 2003: Annual CISM all-hands meeting.

CISM Organization• Science Thrusts: Research directed towards constructing
or improving the component models.• Code Coupling Thrust: Defines and/or develops
computational science coupling tools; Couples component models into comprehensive model.
• Validation and Metrics Thrust: Tests and validates the comprehensive models.
• Empirical Model Thrust: Develops comprehensive empirical model.
• Data Assimilation Thrust: Develops plan in 1st year.• Knowledge Transfer: Provides the models to the research
and forecasting communities.• Education: Uses models in education programs.

CISM Summer School 2003
• Material: the space environment (reality), effects of the environment on technical systems (harsh reality), and the use of models (virtual reality).
• Target audience: beginning graduate students; young professionals from NOAA, Air Force, industry.
• Dates: July 28 – August 8.• Oversubscribed: over 40 applications, 30 accepted.• Goal: to provide a national resource for space weather education
that presents the entire sun-earth system as a unified whole
2003 GEM Workshop 25 June, 2003
Structure of School• Morning: Three Active Lectures• Afternoon: Labs with space weather
