2003 DETROIT LIONS PRESS RELEASE

LAST GAME SAN FRANCISCO 21, DETROIT 13 3COM PARK OCTOBER 4, 2001 After jumping out to an early 10-0 lead, the Detroit Lions let the lead slip away in the second half. After the Lions’ offense stalled on their first possession of the game, the defense rallied to put points on the board as CB Robert Bailey’s 74-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Lions an early 7-0 lead. On the Lions’ ensuing drive, the offense moved the ball 52 yards in 12 plays, but came away empty handed as K Jason Hanson’s 43-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right. The Lions’ special teams unit then stepped up to the plate and made a big play to keep the 49ers scoreless as rookie DT Shaun Rogers blocked Jose Cortez’s 49-yard field goal attempt. QB Mike McMahon, who was inserted for a total of two series during the game (one during each half) in place of starting QB Charlie Batch, then orchestrated a nine-play, 39-yard drive to set up Hanson’s 39-yard field goal. The 49ers answered before halftime as QB Jeff Garcia found TE Eric Johnson for a four-yard touchdown pass with less than two minutes to tighten the score to 10-7. The second half was dominated by the play of Garcia and WR Terrell Owens. The quarterback-to-receiver combination connected five times for 58 yards in the second half, including two touchdowns. Hanson’s 45-yard field goal in the third quarter was sandwiched between the two Garcia-to-Owens touchdowns to finish off the scoring for the day. The Lions were given life when Rogers blocked his second field goal of the day with 1:56 remaining in regulation, but the Lions failed to convert the turnover into points. Fine-tuning in the off-season After the hiring of Coach Steve Mariucci, Lions’ management, coaching staff and player personnel department turned directly to free agency and the annual NFL draft to improve the team’s roster this off-season.

Acquired UFA’s Name Pos. Dré Bly (StL) CB Shawn Bryson (Buf) RB Earl Holmes (Cle) LB Shawn Jefferson (Atl) WR Wali Rainer (Jax) LB Dan Wilkinson (Was) DT Olandis Gary (Buf/Den) RB

2003 Lions Draftees (Still With Team) Rd. Name Pos. 1 Charles Rogers WR 2 Boss Bailey LB 3 Cory Redding DL 4 Artose Pinner RB 5a Terrence Holt S 5b James Davis LB

The Lions struck early in free agency when they signed the

league’s most coveted free agent corner, CB Dré Bly, from the St. Louis Rams to shore up their cornerback position. A solid cover corner, Bly started all 16 games for the Rams last season. In his four-year career in St. Louis, he intercepted 14 passes and returned three for touchdowns.

A priority for the Lions during the 2003 off-season was to retool the linebacking corps after Chris Claiborne and Clint Kriewaldt left via free agency. Detroit acquired free agents Earl Holmes from Cleveland and Wali Rainer from Jacksonville and then drafted Boss Bailey out of the University of Georgia. Holmes is coming off his sixth consecutive year as a starter at middle linebacker and has led his team in tackles for the past four seasons (1999-02) including a team-high 150 tackles (88 solo) for the Browns in 2002. Rainer comes to the Lions after racking up a Jacksonville all-time best 188 tackles (87) in 16 games last season. Bailey, taken with the 34th pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, is a starter for the Lions after a successful career at Georgia where he earned first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors after leading the team with a career-high 114 tackles (63 solos) as a senior.

The Lions beefed up what was already the strongest component of their defense by adding DT Dan Wilkinson midway through the preseason. Wilkinson, who was the top overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, has 363 career tackles (267 solos) and 48 sacks. He was traded to Washington following the 1997 season and was released by the Redskins on July 29, 2003.

The Lions continued to build the wide receiver position through the draft and free agency. With the second overall selection in the 2003 NFL Draft, Detroit drafted WR Charles Rogers, who had a standout career at Michigan State and brings immediate speed and playmaking ability. Twelve-year veteran Shawn Jefferson was added to the Lions roster this spring for more experience and depth at the wide receiver position. Jefferson has played for three NFL teams in his career, most recently with the Atlanta Falcons.

Also in the off-season the Lions made an effort to address the depth at the running back position behind starter James Stewart and when Stewart was injured, they had to acquire more help. Detroit signed free agent Shawn Bryson this past spring, who has tremendous speed but was limited due to injuries while he was with the Buffalo Bills. The Lions drafted Artose Pinner in the fourth round out of the University of Kentucky who was an All-SEC first-team selection after 1,414 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns as a senior. On the day the Lions were trimming their roster to 53 they acquired RB Olandis Gary from the Buffalo Bills for an undisclosed future draft pick. Gary played the first four years of his career with the Denver Broncos before signing as a free agent with Buffalo this past off-season. From 1999-02 with Denver, Gary rushed for 1,614 yards and nine touchdowns. He was an all-rookie selection in 1999 after rushing for 1,159 yards and seven touchdowns.

LAST WEEK DENVER 20, DETROIT 16; SEPTEMBER 28, 2003 INVESCO FIELD AT MILE HIGH The Detroit Lions (1-3) held tough on the road against the undefeated Denver Broncos (4-0) at Invesco Field, but fell short at the end, 20-16. The Lions, who rushed for a season-high 144 yards in the game, used the run en route to their first touchdown of the game. RB Shawn Bryson’s 28-yard run on Detroit’s second possession helped set up a 33-yard touchdown play from QB Joey Harrington to rookie WR Charles Rogers to give the Lions a 7-0 lead. The Broncos would counter on their next drive, tying the game at 7-7 after a 29-yard touchdown pass from QB Jake Plummer to WR Ashley Lelie. Denver would take a 14-7 lead when Plummer hit TE Shannon Sharpe for a one-yard score. A 53-yard field goal by K Jason Hanson midway through the second quarter cut the Denver lead to 14-10. The Lions defense made a big play late in the first half when CB Jimmy Wyrick recovered a Plummer fumble while the Broncos were in scoring territory to keep the deficit at four points going into the locker room. Late in the third quarter, K Jason Elam booted a 37-yard field goal to put the Broncos up by a touchdown again, but on the ensuing drive, the Lions would storm 70 yards down the field in seven plays, capping it off with WR Scotty Anderson dancing his way through the Denver defense for a 43-yard touchdown reception from Harrington. However, a bad snap would cost the Lions the extra point and they would remain behind, 17-16. With 3:13 remaining in the game, Elam kicked his second field goal of the game, this time from 41 yards out, to put Denver up 20-16. Detroit had the opportunity to run a two-minute drill, but a fourth-down pass from Harrington to Rogers was broken up and the Broncos were able to take over and run out the clock.

MARIUCCI TURNOVER IMPACT Head Coach Steve Mariucci brings both a mentality and a proven record when it comes to preaching ball security. His “Four Points of Pressure” drills and speeches are important coaching techniques that have helped his teams accumulate the lowest turnover ratio among all NFL teams since the 1970 merger. (Following statistical information courtesy Elias Sports Bureau). • In 100 regular season games, Mariucci’s teams accumulated

the lowest turnover rate since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger with 1.43 giveaways (interceptions and fumbles) per game.

• No Coach since the ’70 merger has produced better numbers. Mariucci is ahead of Tom Coughlin (1.46) and Barry Switzer (1.55).

• The Lions did not allow a turnover in their regular season opening game against the Arizona Cardinals or their last game against the Denver Broncos. Detroit is also one of only four teams (Indianapolis, San Diego and Seattle) to have not lost a fumble so far in 2003

HARRINGTON’S RISE Lions QB Joey Harrington will make his 17th start this weekend at San Francisco. Harrington threw two touchdown passes against the Denver Broncos last week and is currently tied for first in the NFC with six touchdown passes (Kerry Collins, NYG; Matt Hasselbeck, Sea). He had an outstanding performance against the Cardinals (9/7), throwing a career high four-touchdown passes and was selected for NFC Offensive Player of the Week and NFL Fedex Express Player of the Week honors for games played on NFL Kickoff 2003 Weekend (September 4, 7-8). After being the third player selected in the 2002 NFL Draft out of the University of Oregon, Harrington assumed the duties as the Lions’ starting quarterback in Detroit’s 2002 regular season home opener vs. Green Bay (9/22)

QB Joey Harrington continues to show his ability to avoid the rush having only been sacked three times through the first four games of the 2003 season. With 11 sacks in 18 career games, he is currently the NFL’s all-time sacks-per-pass-attempt-percentage leader (11 sacks/589 attempts for 1.87%) ahead of: Steve Walsh (40 sacks/1317 attempts for 3.04%), Dan Marino (270 sacks/8358 attempts for 3.23%), Doug Williams (84 sacks/2507 attempts for 3.35%) and Mark Rypien (97 sacks/2613 attempts for 3.71%). Among league passers in 2002, Harrington had the lowest sack per pass attempt percentage (eight sacks/429 attempts for 1.83%) in the NFL.

Harrington had career-highs in pass attempts (55) and completions (26) against the Green Bay Packers along with 241 yards passing. It was the most attempts and completions for a Lions’ quarterback since QB Ty Detmer had 51 pass attempts and 31 completions for 303 yards vs. the Chicago Bears (12/30/01)

Against Arizona, Harrington tossed a career high four touchdown passes, an all-time record for a Lions quarterback against the Cardinals, in the Lions 42-24 win in the season opener at Ford Field. He was 17-of-30 (56.7%) for 195 yards with no interceptions and no sacks. His 116.0 QB rating was a single-game career high as well. Harrington became the first Lions’ QB to throw four TDs in a game since Scott Mitchell had four vs. Chicago 9/22/96.

Harrington’s six-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to TE Mikhael Ricks at Arizona (12/8/02) marked his 12th touchdown pass of the season, which is the most for a Lions’ rookie quarterback in franchise history. He also moved past former Lions’ rookie quarterbacks Jeff Komlo (2,238, 1979) and Charlie Batch (2,178, 1998) to become the all-time passing-yards leader among Lions’ rookie quarterbacks with 152 yards passing at Arizona.

Family Ties Many members of the Lions are related to other players around the NFL:

Lions’ rookie LB Boss Bailey is the younger brother of Washington Redskins three-time Pro Bowl CB Champ Bailey. Both starred at the University of Georgia.

The younger brother of Lions T Stockar McDougle will be suiting up for the Philadelphia Eagles this season. Jerome McDougle, a defensive end, was selected in the first round by Philadelphia. McDougle’s cousin, Tyrone Carter, is a safety for the Minnesota Vikings.

Lions rookie S Terrence Holt followed older brother Torry’s steps into the NFL. Torry Holt currently stars at wide receiver for the St. Louis Rams.

QB Ty Detmer isn’t the only quarterback in his family playing in the NFL. His brother, Koy Detmer, is entering his seventh season as a quarterback with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Known for his 10 fourth-quarter, come-from-behind heroics at

the University of Oregon, Harrington added to his NFL total vs. Dallas (11/3/02) when he engineered an eight-play, 38-yard drive with under two minutes remaining to set up K Jason Hanson’s 43-yard game-winning field goal. It marked the second fourth-quarter comeback of his NFL career. His first fourth-quarter come-from-behind victory was vs. Chicago (10/20/02). With the Lions trailing 17-20 with 2:21 remaining in the game, Harrington completed five consecutive passes for 73 yards during the drive, which set up Jason Hanson’s 24-yard field goal to push the game into overtime.

CHARLES ROGERS’ ROOKIE SHOW Lions rookie WR Charles Rogers hasn’t wasted anytime justifying his stock for which Detroit invested its second-overall, number-one draft choice in the 2003 NFL Draft. In only his first regular season game, Rogers had two touchdown receptions (four, 13) on his first two career receptions. He currently leads the team with 18 receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

Rogers leads all rookies in scoring with three touchdowns and is tied for the second most touchdown receptions in the NFL behind Randy Moss and Marvin Harrison who both have four.

While playing against undefeated teams in consecutive weeks (Minnesota, 9/21 and Denver, 9/28) Rogers recorded 10 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. He finished with a team-leading four receptions for a career-high 62 yards, including a career-long 33-yard touchdown reception, against the Broncos and hauled in a career-high six receptions for 54 yards vs. the Vikings.

Rogers is the first rookie in Lions history to catch two touchdown passes in his first NFL game. He is the fifth Lions rookie wide receiver to record two touchdown receptions in one game and the first since Willie Green who finished with eight receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns in a playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys (1/5/92).

Rogers also became the first player since Tony Horne (St. Louis) in 2000 to record touchdowns on his first two career receptions (two-game span). He became the first player since Keith Poole (New Orleans) in 1997 to record his first two receptions for touchdowns in the same game, though Poole accomplished this feat in his third career NFL game.

Rogers’ two touchdown grabs tied a Lions record for most touchdown receptions against the Cardinals in the 55-game history of the series.

DEMOLITION MAN FB Cory Schlesinger has blossomed in the Lions’ West Coast offense and continues to prove that he is arguably one of the league’s best all-around fullbacks. On December 19th, 2002, Schlesinger was named an alternate to the 2003 Pro Bowl. His toughness was put on display during the middle of the 2002 season after he continued playing while he had several cracked vertebrae. He is a key component of the Lions' running game as a bruising blocking back and is an important part of the team’s passing attack. He was the 2002 Mike Utley Spirit Award winner.

Schlesinger had three receptions, the first of which was a four-yard touchdown, for 30 yards in the 2003 regular season opener at Ford Field. He also pulled in a key 20-yard pass to put the Lions at the four-yard line helping setup a Lions touchdown to give the Lions a 35-24 lead.

Schlesinger was a major reason RB James Stewart and the Lions’ offensive unit grounded out 192 yards on 39 rushing attempts (4.9 avg.) vs. Chicago (10/20/02). His lead blocks, including several on Pro Bowler Brian Urlacher, allowed Stewart to churn out a career-high 172 yards rushing.

During the inaugural game at Ford Field vs. Green Bay

(9/22/02), Schlesinger's one-yard touchdown run marked the fifth rushing touchdown of his career. It also marked the first rushing touchdown in Ford Field history

In 2001, Schlesinger was the Lions’ second-leading receiver with 60 receptions for 466 yards (both career highs) and ninth among all NFL running backs. He had the highest tally of any fullback in the NFC and was second only to Larry Centers for the most receptions by a fullback in the entire NFL.

DR. DRÉ… AIN’T NUTHIN’ BUT AN “INT” THANG When the Lions acquired CB Dré Bly they were hoping for a big play corner and so far he has not disappointed. Bly comes to Detroit in the prime of his career after playing his first full season (16 games) as a starter for the St. Louis Rams in 2002. He played in two Super Bowls with St. Louis, helping the Rams win Super Bowl XXXIV as a rookie. Bly was selected by the Rams in the second round (41st overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft out of the University of North Carolina. He holds the ACC career record with 20 interceptions and as a freshman was the ACC rookie of the year, setting a conference record with 11 interceptions.

CB Dré Bly led the Detroit defense with 10 tackles (eight solo) against the Denver Broncos (9/28), his highest tackling output since joining the Lions.

With three interceptions Bly is tied for the second most in the NFL (Clements, Buf.; Harper, Ind.; Reed, Bal.; McCleon, KC; Tongue, Sea.).

Bly recorded interceptions in each of his first three games for the Lions, the first of which he returned 48-yards for a touchdown. His second interception came when he intercepted Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre to end a scoring threat with only 39 seconds left in the first half at Green Bay. Against the Vikings, he intercepted a pass early in the third quarter that led to a Lions’ field goal. Bly has intercepted a pass in three consecutive games for the first time in his career.

Bly has 17 interceptions for 299 yards in his career. He has returned four of his 17 interceptions for touchdowns with all four returns coming from 48 yards or more (48, 53, 56, and 93).

One of Bly’s best games as a pro was on Monday Night Football game against the Lions. He had a career-high 11 tackles (seven solo) and returned an intercepted pass from Lions QB Ty Detmer 93 yards for a Rams touchdown (10/8/01).

PORCHER’S PRESSURES DE Robert Porcher is the Lions’ leader in career quarterback sacks with 91.5. He surpassed former Lions DE Al “Bubba” Baker’s previous record of 75.5 career QB takedowns in 2001. Porcher has been named to three of the last seven Pro Bowls (1998, 2000, 2002), and had a solid 2002 season, recording 51 tackles (33 solo), 5.5 sacks, four passes defensed, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles in 15 games played. In his 12th season with the Lions in 2003, his 177 games played rank fourth along with Kevin Glover in team history.

Porcher has 22 career games notching more than one sack and his 640 career tackles are ranked eighth in Lions’ history.

Porcher scored his first career touchdown in the 2002 season finale vs. Minnesota (12/29) on a fumble recovery in the endzone.

Porcher recorded his 600th career tackle in 2002 vs. Chicago (10/20) finishing the game with three solo tackles.

One of his most dominating performances of 2002 came against Dallas (11/3) when he finished with two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery as well as six tackles (five solo).

Porcher’s 74.0 sacks since 1996 are the third most quarterback takedowns recorded by any NFL player in that span. New York Giants’ DE Michael Strahan has garnered 83.5 sacks and Tampa Bay DE Simeon Rice has recorded 81 sacks since ‘96.

587 career stops. He is behind Jimmy Williams, who stands in seventh place with 653.

GETTING A KICK OUT OF HANSON In two-time Pro Bowler Jason Hanson, the Lions are blessed with one of the NFL's top all-around kickers. He is deadly accurate inside the 50-yard line, and in 2002 vs. Minnesota (10/13), he became the Lions’ all-time franchise leader in field goals after nailing the 245th of his career, surpassing former Lions great Eddie Murray. In last season’s Thanksgiving Day match-up against New England (11/28), Hanson became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer after nailing four field goals. Hanson was 23-for-28 on field goal attempts, which tied for the seventh-best field goal accuracy average in the NFL in 2002.

Hanson made his 23rd career field goal from 50-yards or more at Denver (9/28) when he hit a 52-yarder at INVESCO Field at Mile High. In doing so, he became the third player in NFL history to accomplish that feat.

K Jason Hanson ranks first in field goals made for the franchise (267), field goals attempted (334) and points scored (1,167). He is also ranked in second-place on two of the Lions’ major career scoring and kicking records. His career totals of 366 extra points and 372 extra points attempted trail Eddie Murray’s career totals. Murray’s career totals include 244 field goals in 325 attempts, 1,113 points scored and 381 extra points in 386 attempts.

At Denver (9/28) in Hanson played in the 180th game of his career, which ranks him third for the most games played in franchise history. If he plays in all of the 12 remaining games during the 2003 season, he will move into second place behind only Wayne Walker’s 200 career games played for the Lions.

Hanson’s three field goals (42, 44 and 43) vs. Dallas (11/3) helped the Lions defeat the Cowboys 9-7. His 43-yarder with less than two minutes remaining in regulation ended up being the game-winner. The last time Hanson scored all of the Lions’ points was in a 12-15 loss at Tampa Bay on 12/9/01. The last Lions win with Hanson being the lone point-scorer was at Washington (15-10) on 9/10/00.

Hanson’s 49-yard field goal vs. Minnesota (10/13) marked the 245th field goal of his career and made him the franchise’s all-time leader in field goals made.

Hanson's 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter vs. the New Orleans Saints (9/29) was his fourth field goal of the game. It also tied him with former Lions great Eddie Murray for the most field goals kicked in franchise history (244). The Lions are 12-1 when Hanson kicks at least four field goals in a game.

By connecting on a 54-yarder vs. Green Bay (11/22/01), Hanson became the eighth player in NFL history to record at least 20 career 50-yard field goals. The 54-yarder tied (accomplished four other times) for the third longest field goal made in Lions’ history.

On the first extra point Hanson kicked at Arizona (11/18/01) he became the second player in Lions' history to score 1,000 career points. The first player in Lions’ history to reach that mark was Eddie Murray, who scored 1,113 points during his 12-year career (1980-91) in Detroit.

His seven points in the 2000 season finale vs. Chicago put him over the 100-point plateau for the sixth time in his first nine NFL seasons (101 points), and fourth year in a row. Among his 100-point seasons, he holds the top two spots on the team's all-time seasonal scoring list -- a team-record 132 points in 1995 and 130 points in '93.

Detroit is 46-29 (.613) during Hanson's career when he kicks two-or-more field goals in a game. Also, the club is 26-9 (.743) when Hanson kicks three-or-more field goals, and is 12-2 (.857) when he makes at least four field goals in a contest.
