MCTIMCTIThe Michigan Career & Technical Institute(MCTI) is situated on the shores of Pine Lakein southwestern Barry County, 20 milesnortheast of Kalamazoo. This state-operated,residential postsecondary school offers 12career training programs and a full spectrumof support services for Michigan youths andadults with disabilities. The school canaccommodate up to 400 students during each10-week term, with the length of the trainingprograms varying from one term up to twoyears. The job placement rate for graduatesis 85 percent.
MICHIGAN REHABILITATION SERVICESbelieves that MRS is just part of the
“success equation” in assisting people withdisabilities into the workforce.MRS has a long tradition ofworking with partner agenciesand organizations to achievethe best possible outcomes forpeople with disabilities. This isaccomplished by focusing oncommon goals through mutualproblem solving, commitmentto action, and the sharing ofresources.
Three distinct MRS grant programshelp to augment collaborativerelationships throughout thestate:
Community Rehabilitation Program (CRP)grants are awarded each year to establish,develop, or improve community rehabilita-
tion programs and services. In FY 2003,MRS awarded $1.6 million in CRP grants to42 partner organizations.
Independent Living (IL)/Inde-pendent Living Center (ILC)grants are awarded to helpmaintain a statewide networkof independent living centers,plan and develop new centers,and reimburse individuals forthe personal assistance theyneed to enter and maintainemployment. In FY 2003, MRSawarded a total of 43 IL/ILCgrants totaling $5.1 million.
Innovation &Expansion (I & E)grants are awarded for projectsthat develop or expand innova-
tive approaches to serving persons with disabilities. In FY 2003, MRS awarded 30I & E grants, totaling $1.2 million.

In FY 2003, Michigan Rehabilitation
Services assisted 1,890 recipients of
Social Security disability benefits into
jobs. An annual savings of $22,325,736
in Social Security benefits has been
realized because these individuals are
