volunteer then!

My hobbyhorse over the

years is lack of Reponses

from members to requests

that are put out. It is diffi-

cult enough trying to keep

the club running at full tilt

but is made harder by the

lack of responses. What I

mean is that I look for

ideas, require feedback on

issues, etc and what do I

get. The answer virtually

nothing. All that I ask is if I

put out a query no matter

what you at least respond,

even if it a simple Yes or No

then at least I know that

you have looked at what-

ever it is. My requests

above will be another inter-

esting example to see how

people respond so please

have a thought for the poor

organisers.

Enjoy this month‘s newslet-

ter.

Bob GM4UYZ

Well folks here we go again

with another month‘s edito-

rial, which has certainly

been a busy month for my-

self with regard to the radio

club activities.

From the club point of view

we have once again had

another successful Junk

Night and I must thank eve-

ryone whom helped, do-

nated refreshments and

any raffle prizes. . A fuller

report can be found later in

the newsletter. Lighthouse

Weekend has just passed

and another great success-

ful one it was. The weather

was very kind to us with no

rain on both events, which

must be an absolute mira-

cle. Like Junk Night a fuller

report can be found further

in the newsletter. On the

Foundation Course front I

still have places available

for some of the courses

that I have planned up to

Christmas so if you know of

anyone who is interested

tell them to get in touch

with me. I am also hoping

between now and Christ-

mas developing the Inter-

mediate Course, which I

hope to run just after the

year. I will only be doing

one course as I am looking

at it about 6 to 7 weeks to

run one and by the time it

ends I will be stopping for a

few months.

This month the planned

activities are another DF

Hunt night at the end of the

month and the annual trip

to the Leicester show.

There are a few club mem-

bers attending the Leices-

ter rally on Friday 19th Sep-

tember at Castle Donning-

ton and if you haven‘t been

before it is definitely a rally

worth attending.

To the future is I have

started to think about the

Christmas Night out and

this year due to popular

request it has been de-

cided to go out for a meal.

From the email responses

the elected place is Karen‘s

at Meadowbank so to that

end I have booked it for

20:00 on Saturday 6th De-

cember. Hopefully I will get

a chance to put the menu

together plus cost so it ap-

pears in this newsletter.

If you want to go and you

haven‘t told me already can

you do so now as I need to

get the numbers in. Thanks

in advance.

I am also starting to think

about next year‘s activities,

any ideas. Does anyone

want to take a project on-

board and get something

going for your club? We can

always hire a room at the

community centre. Don‘t all

rush! Serious I feel I need

help here and I would like

someone to take it on and

run with it fully. Who ever

does it will find it is hard

work to sustain a level of

interest and drive it for-

ward. No I am not being

Page 2: 200309

Another great weekend at

this event with even the

gods shining down on us in

the respect that no rain fell,

it must be a miracle.

This year we headed for

Barns Ness on the Saturday

morning, leaving about

08:00 and set up most of

the station. This year we had

the following set-up:

Station 1 – FT1000MP &

ALPHA Linear fed into a

Cushcraft A3S Yagi up at 30

feet.

Station 2 – FT1000MP &

ALPHA Linear fed into a 40M

Dipole and 80M Dipole

We operated from the club

caravan, with the power

being provided by a genera-

tor kindly donated by Blue

Circle for the event.

On arrival the shack was set-

up and at the same time the

aerials were erected. We

decided on a simpler set-up

this year and again, which

really is now by default, that

all QSO‘s would be computer

logged this from my point of

view being the QSL Manager

certainly helps me tremen-

dously. Getting up and run-

ning proved to be an abso-

lute nightmare with one

technical problem after the

other but the predominate

one was the problem of RF

getting into the 20M station

and doing funny things with

the computer i.e. saying that

we were on 160M when in

fact we were on 20M. Even

dropping out the network

didn‘t make any difference

although late on Saturday I

discovered it was coming via

the CAT cable between the

radio and computer. Once I

disconnected that it was ok.

Although it was 11:30 when

we eventually got up and

fully running, about 1.5

hours later than it

should have been,

the stations were

kept very busy indeed

and many pile-ups

were worked, phew!

Plenty of social

breaks were taken as

well as this is what

the event was all

about. Saturday night

saw the normal barbeque

plus the opportunity to have

a couple of beers, well en-

joyed before we all departed

to bed about 00:30 on the

Sunday morning.

The Sunday morning we

were late in getting going, as

it was 09:30 before we

made our first contact. I

think it was due to too many

beers the night before! For

the rest of Sunday the sta-

tions once again kept very

busy before we pulled the

plug at 14:15. Everything

was dismantled and we left

the site about 16:00.

It was once again a great

social event, certainly en-

joyed by everyone who at-

tended. 575 QSO‘s were

made with the breakdown

as follows: Note: the count

doesn‘t show any Dupe‘s

that were made.

Many thanks to everyone

who came and took part and

contributed without this the

event could never take

place. Next year then 00:00

UTC Saturday to 23:59 UTC

Sunday 21st & 22nd August

2004.

Quite a busy month ahead

with a few events to keep

you out of mischief! Several

club members are making

the trip to the Leicester Rally

again this year and have

already booked hotel accom-

modation. If you are inter-

ested please contact Bob

and he can tell you where

everyone is staying. The

other main club event is the

144MHz DF Hunt. This is

usually great fun and I can

thoroughly recommend it to

you all! Otherwise the

GMDX Group AGM and

Transmission 2003 could be

something to do if you feel

the need. I hope you have a

good month and that you all

enjoyed your summer holi-

day.

See you next month

This years Christmas Night

out is on Saturday 6th De-

cember 2003. I have

booked Karen‘s Canton-

ese at Meadowbank for

20:00 with the decision

that we will have the Ban-

quet. As you will see from

the menu below the meal

is £16.80 per person plus

Coffee at £1.70. So to that

end to help me then I am

making it a total of

£18.50 per person.

I need to pay a deposit per

person by our club night in

November (7th) so to that

end, again to help me, can

I have the full money by

then. I really don‘t want to

be messing about on the

actual night collecting

money I am sure you will

understand as I want to

enjoy the evening myself.

Regarding any drinks on

the evening that will be up

to the individuals to pay

their own bills.

All that is left to say if you

have not already re-

sponded to the original

email and want to go can

you let me know ASAP so I

can book definitive num-

bers. Thanks.

This year the weather for our

Junk Night was absolutely glori-

ous, we couldn‘t have asked for

more. The worry before this sort

of event is will people turn up,

glad to say I wasn‘t disap-

pointed. The numbers that

came via the door this year

were up on the 2002 numbers

from 152 to 176.

For those of you interested in

statistics then numbers that

have come through the door on

each junk night are as follows:

For a Friday night event we cer-

tainly cannot complain, so long

may it continue.

Looking around the hall this

year it the number of people

there looked very constant until

about 20:00 when it does seem

to thin out and those left ea-

gerly await the raffle being

drawn, any way tremendous to

see everyone. This year again I

received a few compliments

about our Junk Night and a

sample are ―Great Venue‖,

―Tremendous Friendly Atmos-

phere‖, ―This is what Rallies

used to be like, great‖ and

―Well run night congratulations

to you all, keep it up‖. Person-

ally on hearing these it makes

all the hard work really worth-

while.

Once again Bill & Betty of Jay-

cee continued to give us their

support on the evening. Rose &

Norrie of Tennamast this year at

the very last moment due to

family commitments were un-

able to attend but they still send

along a donation as their sup-

port for the event of which I am

most grateful to them. The

Thorntree Inn also kindly do-

nated a raffle prize for the sup-

port that we give them over the

year, so thanks to them and to

every one else for their dona-

tions to our Raffle.

This year just before the official

proceedings the Lothian‘s Radio

Society had asked me if I would

kindly announce the sad news

of the death of Dave Stobey

GM3HLQ. Dave certainly was an

avid supporter off our event and

even just over a week ago was

heard saying that he was really

looking forward to it. To allow

everyone to pay his or her re-

spects we held

a minute‘s si-

lence in his

memory. I must

thank everyone

for honouring

this it was ap-

preciated.

Before the raffle

w a s d r a w n

Heather Gregory

of the British

Heart Founda-

tion did the

honours of presenting the PW

Tennamast Trophy (awarded to

the winner of the Scottish Sec-

tion in the PW QRP 144MHz

Contest) to the Forth Valley

Contest Group who are all mem-

bers of the radio club.

The draw for the Lucky Door

Ticket was made, won by Vic

Mason GM4GGF. The raffle

then took place, drawn by

Heather and just before the last

ticket was announced she then

spoke a few words explaining

what the British Heart Founda-

tion is all about plus

thanking us for our con-

tinuing support for

them. The actual figure

that we raised on the

night was £667.30. This

added to what we had

raised before Junk Night

gives us a grand total of

£1165.34, which has

now been donated to

the British Heart Foundation.

Thanks goes to everyone for all

the effort put in to raise the

money as it really is going to a

tremendous cause.

For your information since we

started we have now raised a

grand total of £9436.51, not

bad for a ―wee‖ radio club.

Lastly I would like to say a per-

sonal thanks to everyone who

helped put the Junk Night to-

gether. To Sylvia 2M1FMX, thou

shall not pass for doing the door

and raffle tickets plus Ron

GM4IKU‘s XYL Aileen for giving

Sylvia a hand. To Yvonne and

Liz who worked hard behind the

refreshments counter and lastly

to everyone who handed Food

or raffle prizes in. Without this

sort of help this type of event

would never happen. So again

thanks.

WELL DONE EVERYONE FOR A

VERY SUCCESSFUL JUNK NIGHT

AND FUND RAISING YEAR.

With effect from Saturday

This years‘ trip to Tiree for

IOTA was a little different,

some of the team decided to

travel over to the island a

week early to have a bit of a

holiday and set up the sta-

tions for the contest. Cam-

bel l MM0DXC, Br ian

M0RNR, Iain MM3IDM,

Steve MM3SRU and Isa

MM3ISA all went over on the

Monday with the tower and

a van load of equipment.

They also took a special

event callsign GB2IOT to use

for the week while they

tested the stations and

warmed the bands up for

the weekend.

Those of us who received

garbled phone calls late at

night can testify that they

were having a good time…

The rest of the team, John

MM0JXI, Bob, GM4UYZ,

Landels GM4XZZ, Ron

GM4IKU and Innes GM4VJV

joined the advance party on

the Friday after having

driven to Oban overnight. It

was a little strange not hav-

ing to get straight down to

building the station, the only

work required was to repair

one of the Cushcraft A3S‘s

which had been damaged

when a stray cow dislodged

a guy rope and a mast fell

down.

Once again we were staying

with our good friend Elaine

Williams who turns her

house over to us for a mad

weekend

[the feeders coming in the

window]

The work on the ‗shack‘ (ie

the new extension) had pro-

gressed from last year, the

roof was properly tiled and

waterproof and the toilet

was a now permanent fix-

ture.

This year we were able to

put our new purchases to

good use, a Yaesu

FT1000MP, an Alpha 91b

amplifier and a Dunestar

600 bandpass

filter had all

b e e n p u r -

chased by the

contest group

in the run up to

Tiree.

The remaining

equipment for

the second station was

Cambell‘s FT1000MP and

Alpha 87a Amplifier, every-

thing was tied together with

a network of PC‘s running

the NA logging program

which provides logging, rig

control, band pass and an-

tenna switch control and a

DX cluster feed throughout

the contest. The cluster feed

came via the internet and

was fed int the network us-

ing K1TTT‘s Wintelnetx pro-

gram.

As usual with our trips to

Tiree, the consumption of

beer is almost mandatory so

we all set out on Friday night

to the pub. Returning in the

early hours of the morning

we all staggered into bed

before rising bleary eyed on

Saturday morning. Elaine

once again did us proud by

providing three square

meals a day, not a mean

feat when there were ten

hungry mouths to feed.

The contest went pretty

much to plan, we have

learned to keep the RF out

of the shack as much as

possible as this means the

network and PC‘s will run

unmolested, there were only

two problems, one crash

and one loss of sync while

editing a QSO far back in the

log.

Our demon operating team

of Cambell and Brian kicked

things off for us at full speed

and from then on the con-

test was a blur of operating,

eating and trying to get

some sleep, I think everyone

had a great time, a lot of

operating was done, there

were pile up‘s to work and

DX to hunt down.

One of the strangest things

was the appearance of B

class license holders on HF

as the morse requirement

for access to the HF bands

was removed in time for the

start of the contest, we

worked several calls never

before heard on HF.

The band conditions were

not great which is reflected

in our score but we are sure

we gave it our best shot and

we just have to wait to see

how we did compared to

other teams.

Of the many hilarious things

that happened over the

weekend, one of the funni-

est had to be when we were

returning from the pub on

Sunday afternoon, the con-

test was over and the sta-

tions all packed away, we

had been told the barbeque

was ready so we were walk-

ing back down the road

when we spotted Aaron,

Elaine‘s young son coming

the other way pushing what

turned out to be an old

wheelchair. ‗Taxi for

Brown‘ he called and

invited Ron to sit on the

wheelchair and get a

ride back to the house.

This was going fine until

MM0DXC and MM0JXI

sneaked up behind and

took over pushing—at a flat

out run along the road with

Ron hanging on for dear life,

we eventually had to stop

pushing because we were

laughing so much, the

wheelchair then headed for

the grass verge before Ron

could bring it to a halt.

Over the last few years we

have tried to give something

back to the island commu-

nity which makes us all so

welcome, this year

Brian volunteered to

have his chest

waxed in aid of

funds for ‗An Talla‘

the new village hall.

After a few beers

Brian was ready and

Isa, having failed to find any

wax on the island impro-

vised by using gaffer tape to

rip the hairs from Brian‘s

chest.

As always, we had a great

time, we have to thank

Elaine Williams for her hos-

pitality and all her hard work

looking after us. She sent us

a text message as we left

saying hat she was sure

she‘d get the smell out of

the house eventually and

that she‘d order a bigger

septic tank for next year!

As many of you will

know, we have started

doing two DF Hunts a

year. The second hunt of

2003 takes place on

Friday 26th September.

We meet at 18:30 in the

Old Ship Inn car park

ready for a 19:00 start.

Because this event is

later in the year a new

variable is added to the

equation—darkness!

The usual rules apply, £1

per person entry fee

which goes to the British

Heart Foundation.

Transmissions will be on

145.275MHz for 30 sec-

onds every 5 minutes

from 19:00 until 20:45.

The fox will be hidden in

a location which is ac-

cessible by normal cars

and will be located

somewhere on a portion

of OS Landranger map

66. A map will be given

to all teams prior to the

start.

No transmissions should

be made by any of the

entrants on the hunt

frequency during the

event.

Only one set of DF equip-

ment is to be used per

team at any one time.

Once the fox has been

found, please vacate the

area and do not transmit

on any frequency while

near the fox.

During the hunt please

be considerate to other

road users and keep to

the speed limits, anyone

found speeding or break-

ing any of the other rules

will be disqualified.

The main contesting week-

end in September is almost

upon us. This weekend

(6th/7th Sep) sees HF SSB

Field day and also the

144MHz Trophy Contest

taking place. I gather that

MM0CCC and possibly a few

others will be QRV for the

144MHz event from the

usual site at Mainslaughter

Law so why not give them a

shout if you are on the band.

Unusually I don't think that

there will be an SSB Field

Day entry at all this year for

various reasons. If you are

QRV over the weekend you

could always give away

some points though, as this

is often a fun event to dab-

ble in for a few minutes or

hours.

There are also a few

smaller, mainly 80m CW,

events to amuse you at

other times.

73 and good luck in the

contest!

The Cockenzie & Port Seton Amateur Radio Club was

formed in 1984 by Bob Glasgow GM4UYZ, to help the

local amateurs get to know each other.

Numbers have increased steadily over the years and

now average about 33.

Far from being just a local club we have members com-

ing from the Borders, Dumfries, Strathclyde and Fife.

The Club meets on the first Friday of every month

(Second Friday of January) in the lounge of the Thorn-

tree Inn on the old Cockenzie High Street from 7pm till

late.

The Club is run in a very informal way, there are no

fees, no real committee structure, just a group of like

minded people doing something they enjoy!

This does not mean that we don‘t do anything, we en-

ter (and win!) contests, train newcomers, run talks and

video nights and hold an annual Junk Sale.

The Club supports the British Heart Foundation in

memory of a member who died from heart disease by

donating the profits from many of the events we hold,

we have raised over £9,436 since 1994.

The Club is affiliated to the Radio Society of Great Brit-

ain and holds the callsigns MM0CPS and GM2T which

are used for our contest entries. We also have our own

internet domain name www.cpsarc.com and club mem-

bers can get their own [email protected] email ad-

dresses.
