The vision of the School of Biblical Studies - Restenäs is to be an effective catalyst for the growth of God’s Kingdom in Scandinavia and in un-reached areas, that God would be glorifi ed in these places.

The School ofBiblical Studies

It is a valuable thing to study the Bible and know God better through His written Word. However, even study and personal growth is not an end in itself. As followers of Jesus we need to live out the truths we learn (James 1:22-27).

Beginning this autumn, 11 students will be given the rare privilege of spending nine months to study the entire Bible inductively*.

“We want our students to learn how to study the Bible,” says Brian Howell, leader of the SBS here at Restenäs, “and then live it out in their personal lives, teaching others, and giv-ing a Biblical infl uence to their societies and cultures where they are living.”

“Our goal is to see at least one person sent out, for at least six months, to minister in a Swedish or Scandinavian church, and another person sent out to minister in an unreached area where Restenäs already has developed ministry con-tacts.”

Those serving in the Swed-ish or Scandinavian church would be equipped to lead Bible studies, teach Sunday School classes or how to study the Bible, or simply meet other needs of the local congregation. Those going to unreached parts of the world would be able to lead Bible studies, help with discipleship, or train the lead-ers of local congregations, and even fellow missionaries, how to study the Bible.

Please keep the SBS staff in your prayers, as they begin their nine-month journey of equipping world-changers to impact in this world!

What is Inductive Bible Study?

Carefully observing what is in the text by studying cultural and historical background.

Determining what the passage meant to the original reader based on the background evidence and textual observations.

Finding the basic princi-ple the passage is trying to teach.

Applying that principle today.

Helen SjöbergAge: 37

Nationality: Swedish

Job Description: Teacher, in-tercessor

Favourite things to do: Tak-ing walks with the Lord; do-ing things with my kids, such as mushroom hunting or other things they want to do; making up stories and telling them to my kids.

Bible verse: Matthew 22:37-39 “Jesus replied, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind…And… Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

Helen Sjöberg has been a volunteer at Restenäs longer than anyone else currently working here. The day I inter-viewed her, she just happened to be walking past the front door of my home, so I invited her in for some fi ka and to ask her a few questions.

Q: How did you get involved in missions?

Helen: As a child, I was sur-rounded by a Christian fam-ily and by stories about what

God was doing in the world. But God began to speak to me more directly about missions during my Discipleship Train-ing School. In my dorm room was a Scripture that my leaders had written for me, from John 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last…”.

Q: How did you become in-volved in orphanage work in Somalia?

Helen: During my DTS I had

an opportunity to work at a Somalian orphanage, and as a young Christian I only knew that I had to stand up for God and go for the Lord, so I went to that orphanage. Through that decision I was able to help meet the needs of people and share with them who God is.

Q: How are you involved with the orphanage today?

Helen: I am a board member of ATEA (Aid To East Africa), an organisation that assists in meeting the needs of the or-phanage. During a recent visit to the orphanage I was able to establish relationships with a couple of government officials who are influential in further benefiting the orphanage.

Q: How did you come to work at Restenäs?

Helen: After my DTS, there was a deep urge inside of me to return to Restenäs. I believe God told me that my time here was not yet finished.

Q: What is the best thing about being at Restenäs?

Helen: Knowing that God has a purpose for this place. During my times of prayer and worship, as I walk around the cam-pus… (Helen pauses) Do you know how, sometimes it can be difficult to feel God’s presence when you’re in a certain place? It’s not like that at Rest-enäs. To me, Restenäs is like a dwelling place of the Lord. His pres-ence is here.

Helen’s laughter is contagious. Here she is with her three children L-R Kevin, Casandra

and Natasha.

•Our DTS has just begun, with students from Sweden, Denmark, Canada and Aus-tralia. Pray that these young men and women embrace the call God has on their lives.

Praise•Our fi rst monthly email

update was well received. One subscriber wrote: “Just wanted to let you know the newsletter looks fabulous! I enjoyed it very much and have told some of my non-YWAM friends about it. Hopefully this tool will gen-erate interest for [Restenäs]. GREAT JOB!! Keep up the excellent work!”

•43 students so far will be attending our autumn schools, with the possibility of a few extra being added.

Summer MissionsQuestion: Why did our

summer mission teams focus beyond Europe, and into the 10/40 Window this summer?

Answer: To step out of fa-miliar surroundings; to serve in the hard places; to go where Je-sus’ name is not yet known.

The trademark of our summer mission teams is their simple goal to serve. Teams of Swedish youth taught in Cam-bodian churches, prayer walked through Northern India or did street evangelism in Thailand. Some rented hotel rooms and

bamboo huts. Others slept on wooden beds under mosquito nets. Almost all of them ate strange foods and endured ex-treme cultural pressures daily.

Life-changingExperiences

Daniel and Samuel, two young Swedish men with hearts to reach the un-reached, share a life-chang-ing experience from this sum-mer’s mission trip.

Cambodian street kids on their way to scavenge food and other items from the garbage dump.

Extending the Focus

Daniel (Cambodia)Our team became friends with our three young Cambodian translators. One day they showed us photos of some kids who live near a huge gar-bage dump. These children collect food and other things from bags of rubbish. The translators visit them regularly, wash them and teach them

the Bible and good hygiene. I was moved at how these young Cambodian Christians reached out to these kids.

Samuel (Northern India)One hour before departing from Del-hi, I encountered a man with long hair and beard sitting in the lotus position in the middle of the road. He was dressed in only a small loin cloth, the kind Ghandi wore. Rocking back and forth in a mindless daze, he

would pick up hand-fuls of gravel and let it fall from his fi ngertips back to earth. I tried to clean his face, and even offered him some of my water and a little money, but the Indian people on the street told me, “Leave him alone! He is crazy.” I wondered why no one cared for this man, so that he would become like this.

Five years ago, an email address was unnecessary. But today, most of us can hardly

survive without one. Let’s face it, email has become an in-tegral part of our lives.

That’s why Restenäs has decided to cre-

ate a monthly newsletter for all of our family, friends and ac-quaintances who use the Web. Our University of the Nations campus is growing, and we want to direct that growth in the best way possible. By send-ing a monthly email update, we hope to equip you with fuel for thought and action, providing ways to partner together with you in being salt and light here in Sweden, and beyond.

Restenäs successfully launched our fi rst email update on 27 August 2004, reaching 1609 mailboxes. Our updates are easy to download and easy to read on-line. But, if sitting in

front of a computer screen isn’t your cup of tea, you can down-load a printer-friendly version instead.

We invite you to join our growing list of readers to-day. Subscribing to these free

updates is easy. Just send a blank email to [email protected] and follow the instructions on the reply email you’ll receive. You can un-subscribe at any time by clicking on the un-subscribe link located on every update.
