Soroptimist International Sponsor Half a House

Board Chair Message

Thanks to hard work, personal dedication and donations, Habitat Greater Vancouver is on solid ground. A series of fundraising events, Restore profits, individual donations and corporate sponsorships have raised funds to keep pace with a busy building schedule. Everyone at Habitat is excited about the completion of another

four houses and the dedication ceremony scheduled for October 2. This goal was reached through the effort and perseverance of Wayne Stewart and the other volunteers on the Construction Committee. In addition Bill Robinson and his materials team arranged a record value for In-Kind donations. Jeanette Thompson and the Family Partnering Committee continued

their great work and added new partners for current Habitat families. Family Selection Committee volunteers have almost completed the application process for Phase Four. I would also like to thank Ronda Field, Don Jantzen, Tom Kozar, Heather Ross and Clive Sanders who retired from their roles on the Board of Directors. Each made contributions in numerous capacities and the affiliate has truly benefited from their involvement.

ReStore Notes wood and laminate flooring products from their local branch office in Surrey. THANKS TORLYS!

The ReStore also thanks Russell Lighting and Grand & Toy for recent donations and welcomes the newly opened Home Depot in West Vancouver to the weekly schedule for donation pick-ups by the ReStore truck.

These contributions significantly impact the variety and quality of products the ReStore can offer customers.

The ReStore needs volunteer drivers to help collect donations. Please call Tom, at (604) 293-1898.

Habitat ReStore will mark its second anniversary in October 2004.

The ReStore will join in celebrating the dedication and completion of the second set of four houses as a full house sponsor. This house sponsorship recognizes the contribution of volunteer Lynnwood Robb, who passed away in 2004, but was instrumental in starting the ReStore.

Torlys Inc. has joined Habitat for Humanity Canada as a National Gifts-in-Kind Sponsor for flooring materials. In addition to laminate flooring donated toward the houses under construction in Phase two, Torlys is supporting the ReStore with cork,

The Blueprint

Alcan invited the Habitat for Humanity Society of Greater Vancouver to be part of the Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in False Creek, June 18-20. The well-received display centred on a “house of aluminum cans,” constructed by ReStore volunteers. Habitat hosted a contest to guess the winning number of cans

In addition to thanking individual volunteers and those who have regis-tered at recent orienta-tions, special thanks go out to corporate and community groups who have volunteered at Habitat’s Government Street site this year.

Corporate employees who volunteered on site or at the ReStore came from eBay, Deloitte & Touche, Bull, Housser & Tupper, KPMG, Methanex, Reuters News Agency, Sierra Wireless, BLJC, ING Insurance, VEL

Engineering, Electronic Arts, and Richelieu Hardware.

Further thanks go to community groups who have come out to par-ticipate and show sup-port from 10th Avenue Alliance Church, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, New Joy Community Church, VGH surgery staff, Delta Chi Frater-nity, Trinity College Alumni, Leaders of To-morrow, Trinity Western University, Engineers without Borders, Alpha Phi Sorority, and Rotoract.

Thanks again to the CMHC Tournament organizers for choosing Habitat as your recipient charity.

Burnaby Firefighters Lend a Hand

Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society once again sup-ported Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver with a donation of $2,000 towards the completion of Phase 2.

The Burnaby Fire Department has also directed trainee firefighters to help as volunteers at the Government Street site. The trainees learn more about the construc-tion of houses and in turn can give their first aid training to assist Habitat with corporate and community volunteer groups on the building site.

Habitat ReStore Wins Environmental Award The ReStore was awarded the City of Burnaby Environmental Award for Planning and Develop-ment 2004. Nominated by a ReStore customer, Habitat won in this category highlighting exemplary de-velopments that demonstrate innovative envi-ronmental features including conservation of resources through the reuse of materials in the City. In addition to the ReStore’s great success in sponsoring one of the houses in Phase 2, the ReStore has already diverted 207 tons of of re-usable material from landfill. Habitat received a large framed West Coast Native print of the eagle featured in the City of Burnaby’s crest, which will be displayed in the ReStore’s volunteer lounge in appreciation of everyone’s hard work.

Grants News: Habitat Greater Vancouver was successful in receiving a $50,000 grant from Habitat for Humanity Canada and a $10,000 grant from Home Depot for the completion of Phase Two.
