Next, he served as a coach and instructor at the Indoor Court in East Providence, R.I., which was built in 1913 and is one of the oldestcourts in the United States.

TEAM RECORD: 10-11 Overall {6-1 Fall} (4-10 Spring)The 2004-05 Providence College women’s tennis team concluded the fall season with a 6-1 mark and went on to register four wins and 10 losses in

the spring, finishing the year with an overall record of 10-11.Throughout the fall, the Friars were led by seniors Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine), Nicole Rodger (Newport, R.I.), and Lindsey Christensen

(Northboro, Mass.). Gilbride turned in 12 wins at first through third singles and was undefeated in dual matches. She also collected eight doubles victoriesat No. 1 and 2 with Rodger, who registered nine singles wins at No. 4 and 5. Christensen was undefeated in doubles play (5-0) and captured nine singlesvictories at No. 2, 5, and 6. Together, these three individuals accounted for more than half of the team’s singles wins (30 of 57) and 13 of the squad’s 32doubles victories.

The seniors were not the only Friars to have impressive fall seasons. Junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) was 5-4 at No. 2 singles and turned in a10-2 doubles record playing at No. 1 and 2. Sophomore Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) tallied a 7-4 record in singles play and was 11-4 in doubles. Finally, freshmen Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.), Katherine Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) and Karla Ruggeri (Lincoln, R.I.) combined for nine singles wins and 12doubles victories.

With a 6-1 record, and victories over Hartford (6-1 on 9/22/04), Fairfield (6-1 on 9/25/04), Marist (4-2 on 9/26/04), Rhode Island (6-1 on 10/8/04),Monmouth (7-0 on 10/10/04) and Holy Cross (5-1 on 10/12/04), PC entered the October 16-17 New England Championship having outscored itsopponents 37-10 in dual matches. Providence also saw five different Friars seeded at the top of their respective positions – Bitetti at No. 2 singles, Leeat No. 3 singles, Rodger at No. 4 singles, Bitetti and Christensen at No. 2 doubles, and Lee and Hoffend at No. 3 doubles.

Throughout the weekend, PC finished second at No. 1 doubles (Gilbride and Rodger), No. 2 singles (Bitetti), No. 3 singles (Lee), No. 4 singles(Rodger), and No. 6 singles (Lyons), third at No. 1 singles (Gilbride) and fifth at No. 5 singles (Christensen). The only Friars to finish at the top of theirflight were Bitetti and Christensen at No. 2 doubles and Lee and Hoffend at No. 3 doubles. Despite just two first place finishes, Providence tallied enoughpoints to take home their first New England Championship title in six years.

After their best fall season since 2000, the Friars saw some unexpected changes as winter crept upon them. Sophomore Jennifer Daigle (EastGreenbush, N.Y.) left the team and with her absence came a vacancy at No. 1 singles – a position where she had captured the 2003 New EnglandChampionship title and registered a 14-19-1 mark in her year-and-a-half stint as a Friar. Her departure also left Bitetti without a partner at No. 1 doubles, where the duo had previously knocked out a 6-2 record.

At the start of the spring seaosn, Providence dropped its first match, 5-2, to Rutgers on Feb. 5 but rebounded with back-to-back road victories overAlbany (4-3 on 2/12/05) and St. Bonaventure (6-1 on 2/13/05).

“That weekend was probably the highlight of our year,” Turner added. “Albany was a real battle. We needed Molly and Nicole both to win theirrespective matches, and after more than four hours of intense play, they finally did. We were at the courts well past midnight that night and had to be backearly the next morning to face St. Bonaventure.”

In Davie, Fla. over spring break, Providence fell to two-time National Champion Broward Community College (6-1) on Feb. 28 and was shut out,7-0, by Division II’s 22nd-ranked Nova Southeastern on the first of March. After a 7-0 defeat at Seton Hall on March 19, PC put an end to its three-matchlosing skid by handing St. Peter’s a convincing 7-0 loss the following day.

The Friars (9-5) returned home to host Sacred Heart on March 31. After finishing second to PC at the New England Championship in October, thePioneers were looking for redemption. Providence came out strong and was able to capture the doubles point with victories coming from Bitetti/Gilbrideat No. 1 and Hoffend/Ruggeri at No. 3. However, the Friars didn’t fare as well in singles play. Four-of-six individual losses eventually resulted in a 4-3Sacred Heart victory.

Providence was shut out over its next five matches, facing BIG EAST foes Villanova, Connecticut and St. John’s all within two weeks. The Friarsfell to the Wildcats first, 7-0, on Alumni Weekend (4/2/05) before traveling to Stony Brook on April 9. There, PC surrendered matches to bothBinghamton, 7-0, and the home team Seawolves, 4-0, before returning home for back-to-back losses to Connecticut (7-0 on April 12) and St. John’s (7-0 on April 16).

Despite a tough spring season and just three wins in their last 13 matches, the Friars were able to close out the 2004-05 campaign with a 6-1 victoryover Hartford at home on April 20. For the three seniors, their Providence careers could not have ended in a better way as each won both their singles anddoubles matches.

Gilbride, one of the team’s tri-captains, left Providence with 76 career victories in 168 matches played (.452). This year she led the team with 30 wins(17 singles, 13 doubles). Rodger, another tri-captain, compiled 31 singles and 25 doubles victories over her four years at PC (.437). This year she finishedsecond to Gilbride in singles wins with 12. Christensen entered her senior year with 11 singles wins and nine doubles victories. This year alone, she nearlydoubled her career totals in both categories, turning in 11 wins in singles and seven in doubles. She left Providence with 38 career victories (.330).

Though significant, these successes cannot mask the emergence of five other Friars. Bitetti recorded three wins after being bumped up to the team’sNo. 1 singles player. She also turned in an 11-15 mark at the top doubles spot and was 14-15 overall in doubles play. Lee, who was solid last season atsix singles (6-8), proved to be one of the Friars’ top players this year, earning the majority of her 11 wins at the No. 3 position. In doubles, she led theteam with 16 victories, 11 of which were earned with Hoffend and four with Lyons.

Finally, three rookie Friars were able to leave their mark on this memorable season. Hoffend finished second on the team in doubles wins with 14 andcollected two of her four singles wins at the No. 2 position. Lyons finished just behind Lee with 10 singles victories and paired with three different Friarsto turn in a 5-2 doubles record. Ruggeri went 3-4 in singles and 4-6 in doubles, and saw playing time in 10 of Providence’s 15 spring outings.
